Pastor: Rev. Randall L. Weinkauf Worship Services at 8:30AM & 11:00AM

5th-Sundays: 9:30AM service only, no Sun. School Sunday School & Bible Classes (all ages) at 9:45AM

Our Mission: To share God’s love in Jesus Christ by word and deed.

We Warmly Welcome You to Our Worship Services: We welcome all visitors and pray that our worship will provide an opportunity for you to experience God’s love. We invite you to return and share in our mission and ministry for our Savior.

Attendance Registration Books: Please fill out the attendance registration book found in the hymnal holders on the backs of the pews and chairs. Print neatly using complete name and address. Pass it down your row; after everyone has filled it out, return it to the center isle to be collected by the ushers.

Holy Communion: We proclaim that the body and blood of Christ are present with the bread and wine in the Sacra-ment for the forgiveness of sins and recommitment of our lives. Those able to examine themselves, accept Jesus as their Savior, confess their sins, and acknowledge his true presence in the Sacrament are welcome to partake. Holy Communion is offered with both common and individual cups (8:30 AM). If you desire the common cup, wait for the server to bring it. The common cup is filled with wine. The individual cups also have wine, except for the inner ring of cups in the serving tray, which hold white grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you have questions, please speak to the Pastor. If you would like assistance to the altar during communion, speak to an usher.

Nursery and Infant Care Rooms: Nursery care is available for children under four years of age from 8:15am – 12:15pm on first floor; take south elevator from narthex to first floor. The Infant Care Room with a changing table and rocker is locat-ed in Classroom 13 on the sanctuary level (second floor). Additional changing tables are available on the sanctuary level in the family and men’s restrooms, in the women’s restroom located across the hall from the Nursery in the lower level, and women’s restroom on the same floor as the Activity Center.

Sunday School: Visitors: If you are visiting today and your child would like to attend Sunday school, please bring the child to Rooms 14 and 15, east of the sanctuary where they will be directed to the appropriate classroom.

Fellowship Between Services: Please join us for refreshments and socializing in the Activity Center. Thank you!

Special Needs: Visual: Large print service folders are available. Hearing: Hand held amplification receivers with ear pieces are available at the usher's table. Deaf and Hard of Hearing attendees of the early service are encouraged to follow the American Sign Language (ASL) translation of the liturgy as provided by volunteers of the parish's Deaf Ministry. Mobility: Spaces in the center aisle next to the short pews in the sanctuary are reserved for wheelchairs, scooters and seated walkers. In addition, two wheelchairs are available for use in the building. One is located on first floor of the west accessible entrance near the elevator; the second is located in the coat rack of the narthex near the sanctuary.

Please ask an usher to assist you if needed.

INTRODUCTION In today’s first reading God invites all who are hungry or thirsty to receive food and drink without cost. Jesus feeds the hungry multitude and reveals the abundance of God. At the eucharistic table we remember all who are hungry or poor in our world today. As we share the bread of life, we are sent forth to give ourselves away as bread for the hungry. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC CHILDREN’S MESSAGE GATHERING HYMN Hymn 848 “Lord, Whose Love through Humble Service”

P: The Lord watches over all who love him, C: but all the wicked he will destroy.

P: My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, C: and all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.

P: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; C: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. CONFESSION P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. P: Most merciful God, C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. THANKSGIVING [Tune: Nun danket alle Gott, LSB 895]

All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given, the Son, and Spirit blest, who reign in highest heaven, the one eternal God, whom earth and heav’n adore; for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

SUPPLICATION P: Let us pray. Glorious God, your generosity waters the world with goodness, and you cover creation with abundance. Awaken in us a hunger for the food that satisfies both body and spirit, and with this food fill all the starving world; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen.

WORD FIRST READING—Isaiah 55:1-5 (Please see the back page of this worship folder.) God invites Israel to a great feast at which both food and drink are free. God also promises to make an everlasting covenant with all the people, with promises that previously had been limited to the line of kings. As David was a witness to the nations, these nations shall now acknowledge the ways in which God has glorified Israel.

After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING—Romans 9:1-5 (Please see the back page of this worship folder.) This begins a new section in Paul’s letter in which he will deal with the place of Israel in God’s saving plan. He opens by highlighting how Israel’s heritage and legacy include being God’s children, having God’s covenants, being given God’s law, participating in worship of God, and receiving divine promises.

After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Stand, as you are able.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION P: Alleluia. One does not live by bread alone, C: but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Alleluia. (Matthew 4:4) GOSPEL—Matthew 14:13-21 (Please see the back page of this worship folder.) After John the Baptist is murdered, Jesus desires a time of solitude. Still, his compassion for others will not allow him to dismiss those who need him, and he is moved to perform one of his greatest miracles.

Before the reading: P: The holy gospel according to Matthew. C: Glory to you, O Lord. After the reading: P: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sit

HYMN OF THE DAY “All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly” [Tune: Hymn to Joy, LSB 803] 1 All who hunger, gather gladly; holy manna is our bread. Come from wilderness and wand’ring. Here in truth we will be fed. You that yearn for days of fullness, all around us is our food. Taste and see the grace eternal. Taste and see that God is good.

3 All who hunger, sing together, Jesus Christ is living bread. Come from loneliness and longing. Here in peace we have been fed. Blest are those who from this table live their days in gratitude. Taste and see the grace eternal. Taste and see that God is good.

Words: Sylvia G. Dunstan, 1955-1993, © 1991 GIA Publications, Inc. All rights reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A-717236. Stand, as you are able. APOSTLES’ CREED P: God has made us God’s people through our baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith. C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

2 All who hunger, never strangers; seeker, be a welcome guest. Come from restlessness and roaming. Here in joy we keep the feast. We that once were lost and scattered in communion’s love have stood. Taste and see the grace eternal.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life ☩ everlasting. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Generous, compassionate God, we gather before you to pray for the church, the world, and all in need. After each petition:

P: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude:

P: Into your hands we place all our prayers, spoken and unspoken, trusting in the mercy of Christ Jesus. C: Amen.

MEAL PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION P: Come to the banquet, for all is now ready. LAMB OF GOD

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK August 8—Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), died 1221 Dominic was a Spanish priest who preached against the Albigensi-ans, a heretical sect that held gnostic and dualistic beliefs. Dominic believed that a stumbling block to restoring heretics to the church was the wealth of clergy, so he formed an itinerant religious order, the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), who lived in poverty, studied philosophy and theology, and preached against heresy. The method of this order was to use kindness and gentle argument, rather than harsh judgment, to bring unorthodox Christians back to the fold. Dominic was opposed to burning Christians at the stake. Three times Dominic was offered the office of bishop, which he refused so that he could continue in his work of preaching.

August 10—Lawrence, deacon, martyr, died 258 Lawrence was one of seven deacons of the congregation at Rome and, like the deacons appointed in Acts, was responsible for financial matters in the church and for the care of the poor. Lawrence lived during a time of persecution under the emperor Valerian. The emperor demanded that Lawrence surrender the treasures of the church. Lawrence gathered lepers, orphans, the blind and lame. He brought them to the emperor and said, “Here is the treasure of the church.” This act enraged the emperor, and Lawrence was sen-tenced to death. Lawrence’s martyrdom was one of the first to be observed by the church.

August 11—Clare, Abbess of San Damiano, died 1253 At age eighteen, Clare of Assisi heard Francis preach a sermon in a church in town. From that time, she determined to follow in his example of Christian living. With Francis’s help (and against the wishes of her father) she and a growing number of companions established a women’s Franciscan community, called the Order of Poor Ladies, or Poor Clares. She became a confidante and advisor to Francis, and in standing up against the wishes of popes for the sake of maintaining complete poverty, she helped inspire other women to pursue spiritual goals.

IN THE CHURCH ENTRYWAY, you will notice a big plastic storage tote. We are using it to collect items for students attending Haskell, many who arrive in Lawrence quite needy. If you could help with his or her toiletries, new twin sheet sets, new twin bedding, pillows, college school supplies, Lawrence transit bus passes, non-perishable snack food, coffee pots, microwaves, etc., even movie theater tickets or restaurant gift certificates, it would be most appreciated. These items will be given to Deacon Bob Prue at Haskell LIGHT House for distribution to the students.

On Sunday, August 20, from 3:00-7:00 p.m., Haskell LIGHT House will be holding its “Welcome Back Student Bash.” Immanuel-University members are welcome to attend. The welcome back will feature free bbq, a dj, trivia, door prizes, dunk tank, slip-n-slide, volleyball, horseshoes, and water balloon fights.

L.I.N.K. (LAWRENCE INTERDENOMINATIONAL NUTRITION KITCHEN) will be served by Immanuel volunteers on Tuesday, August 8. Have you signed up to prepare food or serve? Signup sheets are in the volunteer notebook on the table in the narthex.

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” Matt 25:40

JO LUTZ’S 90TH BIRTHDAY is August 13. Her family encourages her friends to send a birthday card to her home at 1501 Inverness Dr, Apt #325, Lawrence, KS 66047 or you can put one in her mailbox in the narthex.

PROPERTY AND GROUNDS will be hosting an ALICE Active shooter 2 day instructor certification class Nov. 1-2, 2017, a non-weapon training event. The purpose of advanced ALICE training is to educate local and school-based law enforcement, as well as church, hospital, and workplace administrators and safety professionals about our researched-based, proactive response approach to Violent Intruder events. The ALICE training program is designed to supplement current “Lock -down” or “Secure-in-Place” procedures used frequently in our public schools and institutions. Tragic historic events have dictated the need of enhanced response options to increase chances of surviving a horrific event. If you have any interest in becoming an instructor of ALICE for our church, please contact Nancy Weinkauf. [email protected] or 393-6746.

MOST ENCOURAGING! Because of Grocery Buck sales and a refund from Dillons on purchases by members of Immanuel the congregation was able to make an additional payment of $597 in July on the Activity Center mortgage. The total of additional payments in 2017 is $3,282. Your support in this effort is greatly appreciated. Grocery Bucks may be purchased after Sunday services in the treasurer’s office for purchases at Hy-Vee and Checkers. Dillons refunds a percent of the purchases by members of Immanuel who have designated that Immanuel should receive the refund. Once you register at the Dillons service desk each receipt you receive will have “Immanuel” at the bottom. Again, thank you for your consideration.

DEAF MINISTRY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED, junior high through adult, individuals or groups, to sign one prayer each during the 8:30 worship service on Sundays. Will train. Contact Ralph Planthold, 785-312-0521 or [email protected].

Please contact Crystal Moe by text at 913-563-9133 or email at [email protected] if you know of any high school/college kids/grandparents/others who love kiddos and would be interested in making a little extra money. Sunday school attendance. In the meantime please be patient as the nursery may not be available on a regular basis until we find a replacement nursery attendant. Please also prayerfully consider volunteering in the nursery on occasion. This will help keep the nursery available to families with young children when a regular nursery attendant is unavailable.

SIGN LANGUAGE MINI-LESSONS, lasting only 10 minutes each Sunday, will be held in the Library (room along the west wall of the Sanctuary) from 9:35-9:45 AM, so as not to interfere with Adult Bible Study or iROCC. Those who would like to understand better what is being signed at the 8:30 service, from junior-high age through adult, are welcome and encouraged to attend as they are able .

DEAF MINISTRY: The first two rows of movable chairs on the left side of the Sanctuary are reserved at the first service each Sunday for Deaf Ministry committee members and all who wish to follow the liturgy in American Sign Language. You can view the most updated version of Immanuel’s Directory of Members on our website: immanuellawrence.org. After logging in, go to Members Only (bar at top of page). Go to the Resources pull-down tab and select Documents. You will see a link there to Immanuel Lutheran Church Directory of Members. Call the church office if you have any questions. . Thank you.

LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WITH WHOM TO SHARE SUNDAY LUNCH? Tired of eating alone? Want to get to know Immanuel’s family better? What better way than over food! If you desire to share your Sunday lunch plans with others, please meet in the Activity Center at 12:15 PM each Sunday. Contact Eleanor Woodyard for more information, 842-3092.

FUNERAL PLANNING: In the days following a death, it can often be overwhelming for family members to put together the details of a funeral. Whether it is following a long illness or a surprising accident, your loved ones may wonder what your wishes really were. Have you identified your wishes, written them down, and shared them with your family? To help you with this decision-making, ILCUSC’s Health and Wellness Committee has printed a “Funeral Planning Worksheet” for your use. GENEROSITY THOUGHT “They replied, ‘We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.’ And he said, ‘Bring them here to me’” (Matthew 14:17-18). When the disciples held on to the five loaves and two fish—that’s exactly what they had. But when they handed them over to the Lord, the multitudes are fed. Apart from Jesus, all we do and all we have is nothing. However, in Jesus all we do and have is blessed to be used by the Lord for his gracious work.

SUMMERTIME STRESS SLOWING YOU DOWN? We like to think of summer as being a relaxing, enjoyable time. But hurts, struggles, crises, and problems don’t take a vacation. Many times our difficulties seem even worse during the summer because everyone else seems to be enjoying life while you are feeling down. If you are experiencing a difficult time—emotionally, spiritually, or relationally—you don’t have to suffer alone. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers, ready to listen, care for and encourage you, pray with and for you, and provide one-to-one Christian care to help you through whatever it is that you are facing. Men are matched with male Stephen Ministers and women are matched with female Stephen Ministers. It’s free. It’s confidential. And it will make a difference in your life!

To find out more about Stephen Ministry for you or someone you know, talk with Immanuel-University’s Stephen Ministry Leader, Pastor Randy.

NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST - Matt. 14:13–21

“Our sows (i.e. false Christians) ... have this precious bread (i.e. God’s Word) in abundance and many basketfulls of fragments (Matt. 14:20), are sated with it and do not even care to smell it. Indeed, they thrust it about with their snouts, root around in it, trample it with their feet, and run over it. Thus the saying is true: When something is in common use, it is not appreciated, but is despised, however precious it may really be. Unfortunately such a saying is proved especially true in the case of our dear Word.” LW 12:151

Quotation from Luther’s Works, American Edition (56 vols.; St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House and Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1955–1986).
