The result has been more families being broken and more individuals, especially the young, leaving their faith and inevitably our churches. The typical fight-or-flight psychological reactions can readily be seen. Some churches and individuals who sense that their values and beliefs are under attack have embraced the flight response by isolating themselves from the community. Other churches and indi- viduals have chosen the fight response using Scripture and reason to point a loud, glaring finger at the failings and fallacies of culture and loved ones. The goal of this conference—recognizing and rejoicing in the love of God for the world and the inspired truths of His Word—is to propose and examine a third response reflecting the Apostle Paul s method of engaging the culture (and our rela- tives) by speaking the truth in love. This also reflects Jesusapproach to sinners. Our prayer—and the goal of this conference—is that we all develop the capacity to engage the culture as we also seek to retain our young people (children and grandchildren) through healthy interactions under the bless- ing of our Lord. “We The People”...Politics Bible Study

Page 4

February 5, 12 & 19 6:00-7:30pm Multi Purpose Room Class Leader: Rev. Kevin Jones “We the People” Politics Bible Study (3 Sessions) Politics and politicians—- there’s seemingly no way to escape them. Though government and those who gov-ern are often criticized by press and citizen alike, it is through government that God works His designs in this world. Join host Dr. Dale Meyer as he surveys government in history, the character of the Unites States as a nation, and the Christian’s role as a citizen of any country. In We the People: Citizens of Two Kingdoms, Concordia Seminary President Meyer surveys the emergence of the United States’ governmental system by considering the religious and philosophic thinking that shaped its early development. Along the way concepts like “ceremonial deism,” “theocracy,” “republic,” Martin Lu-ther’s “Two Kingdom’s” and more will be explored. Throughout this video and the accompanying discussion guide, tough questions are raised that help the user understand the demanding balance between Church and State. Politics and religion often separate people in sharp and defining ways, dividing a country along shifting lines. Yet, no matter what one ’s perspective is, for the Christian his or her citizenship is an opportunity to serve in both the affairs of earthly government and the mission of the Christian Church on earth—- Martin Luther’s “Two Kingdom’s.” This three-session video Bible study contains an extensive contribution from Dr. Joel Biermann, associate professor of Systematic Theology at Concordia Seminary. He examines the oft-made claim that the United States is a Christian nation by examining what that statement means. He also looks at what being a Christian means in society. The DVD contains supplemental video which include extended interviews that add to the discussion. Each video session is approximately 10-15 minutes which can be followed by 30-45 minutes of discussion.

Every year the Lion's Club runs a Peace Poster Contest. Immanuel's students design posters representing peace. Three winners were chosen. First place was Amelia Gohs (8th grade), Second Place was Ariana Morse (6th grade), and Third Place was John Thomas Breen (7th grade). Congratulations to these three students. Later in March they will be invited to a luncheon sponsored by the Lion's Club.

Bay City Elks Club has an essay contest. Last year we had one winner. Students had to write an essay on the topic: "What Does Freedom of Speech Mean to Me? There can only be three winners in each divi-sion. All three winners for Division II are from Immanuel. Congratulations to 1st Place: Kylin Ardahl - 8th grade, 2nd Place: John Thomas Breen - 7th grade, and 3rd Place: Alliyah Morse - 8th grade. These stu-dents will be honored during the first week of May with a dinner sponsored by the Elks Club.

Immanuel Church and School is planning a Chili and Soup Cook-Off on Saturday, March 7th following the 5:00PM worship service. We are looking for individuals that have a favorite recipe for chili or another soup that would like to enter the contest. Cost will be $5 to enter your chili or soups. There is also going to be a children's section. Children can enter a dessert for $1. Gift cards will be given to the owner of the chili that gets the most votes, the soup that gets the most votes, and the child's dessert that gets the most votes. So, we need everyone to get thinking about making a soup, chili or something else, and children can be plan-ning on making their favorite dessert. Make enough for lots of people. We need lots of taste testers. After the 5:00PM service, we will meet in the multi-purpose room of the church and have a great time. Mark your calendar for March 7th and watch the church bulletin and March's newsletter for more information. We want to see YOU there!

Immanuel Lutheran School's Special Person's Day - scheduled for Wednesday, February 12th. Coffee and donuts will be served in the cafeteria from 7:40 until 8:00AM. Students will meet their special person in the cafeteria at 8AM to go to church for worship. After worship, special persons can return to the classroom until 10AM. At 10AM we will dismiss the special people and return to our normal class. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us in the morning of February 12th for special person day.

Wednesday, March 4th, the Bay-Midland Lutheran Schools will be meeting at Valley Lutheran High School for a joint worship service. Service will be 9-9:45AM. At 10AM there will be presentation to the students by Jerry Jacoby, Jerry is a nationally known performer that will make the students laugh but with every laugh he has an important message lesson that they will not forget. Students will return to school by 11:30AM. We look forward to spending time with our other Lutheran Schools.

STEM Night - Thursday, Feb. 20th, Immanuel Lutheran School will be hosting a STEM Night. SVSU stu-dents will be assisting the staff of Immanuel. There will be hands on activities for children of preschool age through 8th grade. We are asking parents to be with their children. A light dinner will be served at 5:15PM in the dining room and at 6PM the gym doors will open until 7:30PM allowing families to participate in this fun and exciting evening. Plan to joy us and experience different STEM activities! We look forward to see-ing you.
