Background: Walter Lara’s Story• College student Walter Lara’s tweet in 2008 “I’m being deported.”

• Maria Lacayo, a childhood friend, created the “Keep Walter’s Dream Alive” Facebook page when he was two weeks from being deported and received 400 emails the next day suggesting action and giving support

• Obtained a letter from Senator Bill Nelson to Department of Homeland Security asking to defer action on deportation

• Supporters crashed the lines at the Department of Homeland Security on two consecutive days

• Twitter was created and had 300+ followers in a couple of hours

• Three days before he was scheduled to depart, Lara received a yearlong deferment that has been renewed

• Dreamers now see Lara’s success as a flagship case to use social media to prevent deportations of civil undocumented immigrants
