MATT PACHA

Chair, Regina Board of EducationClass of ‘78

Regina is an exciting and vibrant Catholic PreK-12 education center devoted to the teachings of the Roman Catholic faith as exemplified by our four supporting Catholic parishes and ancillary assistance from the Newman Center and Sts. Mary and Joseph Cluster in Hills, Lone Tree, and Nichols. We invite you to spend time reviewing this Impact Report as we take “Pride in Our Past” while “Building Our Future.”

Enclosed you will find a review of last year’s curriculum and technology updates, financial information, and a listing of our many supporters who are so very vital to the mere existence of the school on an on-going basis. You will also read exciting news about a capital campaign to build our future and move the school forward.

We have so much to be proud of in this past year. Regina is the first school in the area to offer one-to-one computing. Our science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum continues to expand, setting our students up to be more successful, contributing members of our community. And Regina continues to be blessed with dedicated and caring teachers devoted to bringing out the best in our students.

Any review must recognize the importance, financially and spiritually, the four parishes have in making our parochial school vibrant in the Iowa City-Coralville-North Liberty area. Thank you parishioners and pastors.

We take this opportunity as well to thank April Rouner for her 16+ years of service as executive director of the Regina Foundation. April left her position to become the development director for Newman Catholic Student Center at the University of Iowa. A new Regina Foundation executive director will soon be announced.

Our future is bright. To each reader of this Impact Report, we say thank you! Whether you have made gifts of treasure, time, or prayer, all are important to our success.

Join us as we review the 2015-2016 school year and look forward to Regina’s future.

PAM SCHOWALTER

Director of Admissions

I am often asked on tours about what makes Regina different from the public schools. There are many differences. However, the first one that always comes to mind is our faith. We are the parish school for St. Thomas More, St. Patrick, St. Wenceslaus and St. Mary. Regina is rich in tradition, academic rigor, extra curricular activities and the anchoring of our Roman Catholic faith.

New and current families choose Regina because of our safe environment, high priority on academic success, sense of community, 100% graduation rate and extremely high college enrollment percentages and because they feel that this is the best place for their child.

Regina’s size is instrumental in giving our students leadership opportunities at school, in our community and through a variety of service projects. New families are encouraged to become involved in our Regina community. Regina Parent Ambassadors are paired with a new family to share upcoming school, fine arts and athletic events. Regina’s Student Ambassadors assist at beginning-of-the-year Open Houses, Crownie Nights, Parent-Teacher Conferences and more. Some of these

Ambassadors also are part of our Student Involvement Team and meet monthly with our administrative team, pastoral representative, school board members and teachers. Regina students have a voice at their school. They are our leaders of tomorrow.

Regina is a special place. We are unique here in the Corridor. Diversity, culture, and our faith element are embraced and welcomed. An unwritten goal of our staff and student body is to make everyone feel that they belong when they enter our doors. As Regina continues to grow in its enrollment, the respect and sense of faith and community continues to grow.

Regina is a vibrant campus that provides a secure and engaging environment for children to become responsible and confident young adults. Parents of all prospective students are welcome to contact me at (319) 499-9006 or send me an email at [email protected] to arrange a tour and share the Regina experience.

STUDENT AMBASSADORS

“The Regina Student Ambassador Program exemplifies what it means to be a part of the Regina Family. Not only are these students dedicated to their academics, but they also take the time out of their own lives to promote the Regina brand, improve communication within the school and help in the developement of our Regina community through its students, parents, staff, alumni, and business partners.”

-Patrick Moeller, Teacher

“For my son, Alex, the Student Ambassador Program has been an incredible way for him to build leadership skills and enhance his communication skills. As a parent, I love that he can network with Regina parents at special events, encourage other students to explore new initiatives at our school, and to work closely with administration at extra curricular activities. Student Ambassadors play a vital role in communicating with prospective students at Regina. These ambassadors, along with staff and students make Regina a great place to be.”

-Tracy Blomme, Parent of a Student Ambassador

TESTIMONIALS“My experience at Regina has been amazing! I came from a public school and the faith, friendships, and academics that I have gained being at Regina are incredible. It’s been a terrific fit for me.”

-Alex, 9th Grade

“My experience at Regina has affected me in a positive way. My three older siblings are Regina alumni. They can definitely agree that Regina’s academics, athletics, and art programs really benefited them in the college experience and beyond. As a Student Ambassador, I enjoy representing my school, and telling everyone about my experiences here!”

-Bree, 10th Grade

FAITH AT REGINA

PAGE | 9

• Students embody the spirit of religious figures on special days throughout the year such as All Saints Day, Advent season, Good Friday, etc.

• A prayer basket is located in the elementary main hallway just outside the principal’s office. Please feel free to place your prayers in the basket at any time. Prayer intentions are prayed for as a school each morning.

• The Rosary is prayed each Wednesday morning at 7:30 am in the Chapel. All are welcome.

• Regina also serves as the site for the Tri-Parish Religious Education program for Iowa City area public school students. In the 2015-2016 school year, 172 K-8 students were enrolled in religious education at Regina.

• Junior and senior high students attend Mass each Wednesday at 2:10 p.m. in the high school gym. Elementary students have Mass

at least once a month and prayer services throughout the year.

NEW RELIGIOUS EDUCATION STANDARDSTo ensure adequate time to cover the components of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops framework and to place the same emphasis on learning about our faith as other subject areas, 9th-12th grade students now have religion class every day. 7th and 8th grade students already have daily religion class through the VIA program.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER

At Regina we offer pre-k, preschool, and an option for childcare. Our philosophy and objective is to assist each child in his/her unique development by focusing on the following developmental areas:

• Inspiring a love of learning that will carry over into the child’s elementary years.

• Encouraging self-worth and positive emotions about themselves and those with whom interact.

• Developing a sense of respect for the rights of others.

• Enriching their appreciation of their love of God and God’s love for them.

• Providing a safe and stimulating environment on a private campus where children can learn through a variety of structured and staff supervised/child-initiated, creative activities.

Regina Early Childhood Center underscores our center’s mission to strive to be the leading faith-based pre-k educational center in the Midwest. Our educational days are designed to allow children increased time for kindergarten readiness activities, structured social interaction, number/letter recognition, creative art projects, Spanish language enrichment, and investigation of our physical world within our Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom.

All three Early Childhood Center classrooms now have SMARTboards and iPads.

NEW AT REGINABIOMEDICALThe challenging new four-course Project Lead the Way biomedical science curriculum allows students to investigate the roles of biomedical professionals as they study the concepts of human medicine, physiology, genetics, microbiology, and public health. Biology and anatomy teacher, Chris Murdock, states, “Classes like this can open the door for any student to fall in love with science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.”

1:1 CHROMEBOOKSTo better prepare students to be digital learners/citizens of the 21st century, Regina Jr./Sr. High School is the only school in the area to offer one-to-one computing for its students this school year. All 7th-12th grade Regina students have been outfitted with new personal Chromebooks, which are inexpensive web-based laptops.

ART DEPARTMENTThrough the help of PISA, a grant from Theisen’s and funding from Regina, the Elementary Art Department purchased a new automatic kiln for the art room. This purchase helps facilitate student learning through many types of ceramic projects.

TEXTBOOKS

Textbooks are replaced on a rotating basis. This year, the elementary math and reading textbooks were updated as well as social studies and religion textbooks for the high school.

RENOVATED GYMThe high school gym was renovated this past summer in order to allow for non-overlapping court practices and youth tournaments. Hoops were moved to the side walls to create two full-size courts and the floor was sanded, painted, and sealed.

IPADSOur two carts of iPads in elementary, plus the individual iPads per homeroom, allow students to explore current curriculum in a different format. Teachers choose specific apps that can supplement learning and differentiate according to needs.

Regina and the greater Catholic community provide opportunities to ensure Regina can be affordable for most families. We are appreciative of the significant funding (tuition assistance) from our four local Parishes. Additional support is also received from the Newman Center and Sts. Mary and Joseph Cluster Parishes. The School Tuition Organization (STO) in our area and the Regina Foundation provide significant cash resources in their assistance of students’ tuition needs. In 2015-16, one out of four Regina students received tuition assistance from one of these sources or from Regina itself.

The cost of educating a child at Regina exceeds the tuition and parish assessments received annually. The remaining 16% of Regina’s operating budget is the “gap” in that cost to educate...that gap is primarily funded by fundraising efforts. In fiscal year 2015-2016, $913,030 was raised throughfundraising efforts of the Regina Foundation, SpecialEvents Office, and parent-led organizations.

Goal: $450,000

The Regina Foundation Annual Appeal helps fund the costs associated with Regina’s daily operations throughout the year. The 2016-2017 Annual Appeal has significant funds earmarked to assist Regina with teachers’ compensation. $100,000 is targeted to assist with teachers’ salaries in the short term and $60,000 for the Regina Teacher Endowment for the long term. Other Appeal funding will benefit technology, textbooks, professional development, curriculum and

program enhancements, and facility maintenance.

To give online or enroll in the Monthly Giving Program, go to icreginafoundation.com or send your gift/pledge in the enclosed envelope. Gifts of stock, which relieve donors of capital gains, are also welcomed. Here is how your annual/monthly gift can make an IMPACT on Regina Catholic education:

With the identification of our most immediate needs, school leadership realized the Regina community is at a true crossroads. We worked diligently to design a bold vision to enhance the “Regina experience” for all students and build upon our historically strong foundation. This plan will help further distinguish Regina as the premier Catholic, pre-K through 12th grade school in the area and make it as accessible as possible to all families who seek a faith-based education.

Regina leadership is proud to announce the Pride in Our Past, Building Our Future Capital Campaign. Through this major, three-year fundraising effort, we will take a large step toward realizing the vision for the future and will address as many of the following needs as possible. We will focus on our most urgent facility improvements.

ADDITIONAL ENTRANCE AND EXIT OFF FIRST AVENUE ($250,000)

PHYSICAL UPDATES ($305,000) • Upgrade boys and girls locker rooms and bathrooms• Repair gym roof• Install security upgrades

RESURFACE AND EXPAND FRONT PARKING LOT ($375,000)

BUILD EDUCATIONAL WING ($4,680,000)A primary focus of growing our enrollment will be to expand our Early Childhood Center into existing classroom space. Historical data tell us that we have an 80 percent rate of retaining students at Regina once they attend our Early Childhood Center. By increasing the size of our early-childhood program, we will ensure Regina continues to thrive for years to come. We will need to build seven new classrooms to replace the space repurposed for our early-childhood students. In addition, we will build a new science lab, which will accommodate more students and provide a better learning environment for them. We also will be adding flex space, collaborative teaching space and a new, secure entrance to the back of our school.

CAMPAIGN EXPENSES • $385,000

PHASE ONE TOTAL COSTS • $5,995,000

The elements of phase one represent the most pressing needs and will be addressed within the three-year Pride in Our Past campaign. Beyond that, strategic planning from our Board of Education and feedback from the planning study clearly point to the need for the following projects – renovated auditorium, new gymnasium and athletic facilities – which will be phase two of our long-term strategic vision. (Formal cost estimates of the phase two components have yet to be finalized, as our focus is on accomplishing phase one.)

IntroducingPRIDEin Our Past

FUTUREOurBuilding

Capital Campaign

The Annual Appeal helps fund the costs associated with our daily operations throughout the year. Because we will continue to incur these expenses, the Appeal will continue to run during the capital campaign. The Pride in Our Past Campaign is an extraordinary effort beyond the Appeal that will impact Regina for decades to come. Not only will campaign funds allow us to address mounting structural issues and limitations, it also facilitates our strategy to grow enrollment and further distinguish Regina as the premier choice for faith-based education in the area.

Yes. We are asking donors to consider a sacrificial pledge over three years to the campaign alongside a one-time gift to the 2016-2017 Annual Appeal. Supporters like you have indicated a preference for being approached for both appeals simultaneously. We will honor this preference and, in the process, save everyone time and reduce costs.

Growing enrollment is a key strategy for making sustainable pay increases to our educators. That is why the expansion of our Early Childhood Center is a major focus of the campaign. Additionally it is important for us to create a fresh and welcoming environment that will support the academic needs of our next generation of students. Expanding and sustaining our enrollment will allow us to positively impact our teachers' salaries. However, we are not relying upon long-term strategies to show our teachers we are serious about their futures. Teacher salaries are top of mind for our leadership teams. They continue their dedication to strategically planning in order to make meaningful sustainable progress. To assure our teachers we are committed to them, we initiated a first-ever mid-year salary increase last year and increased their salary again for the current school year.

How is the Pride in Our Past, Building Our Future Capital

Campaign different from the Annual Appeal?

Will I be asked to support both?

How will the campaign address teachers’ salaries?

LIVING THE PROMISEREGINA FOUNDATION The Living the Promise Society was established to recognize donors

who included the Regina Foundation in their estate and deferred‐giving plans and to encourage others to do likewise. Such long‐term objectives ensure the continued strength and growth of educational programs at the Regina Catholic Education Center for future generations.

Bequests are one of the simplest, yet most effective, ways of giving to Regina. They have helped shape Regina physically,

by supporting the construction and maintenance of our

buildings/campus, and established scholarships and endowed

funds to enhance the academics and other special programs

central to Regina’s mission.

Through your estate, life insurance or retirement plan, you can

provide general support to Regina, or fund a program, project

or area of study that is important to you. When meeting with

your attorney, consider the ways you can make a bequest:

• A specific bequest directs a dollar amount or particular

assets, such as securities, real estate or tangible personal

property.

• A residuary bequest directs all or a percentage of

the remainder of your estate to Regina, after specific amounts bequeathed to other beneficiaries are distributed and estate

‐related expenses are paid.

The following language can be used by your attorney to

create a bequest to Regina through your will:

I give and bequeath to Regina Foundation, an Iowa non‐profit corporation of Iowa City, IA the sum of _________ dollars (or______ percent of the residue of my estate) to be used for the purposes of Regina Catholic Education

Center at the discretion of the Foundation’s Board of

Directors; or for any other specified purpose hereby stated.

All gifts of any amount make a difference at Regina. Explore how your bequest can assure your own legacy.

You may also designate Regina as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, life insurance policy, or TOD/POD account.

Are you aware that your beneficiaries may pay more than 40% income tax on retirement assets they inherit?

Because Regina is a tax exempt institution, retirement

assets, such as IRAs, 401 (k)s, etc., can pass to Regina

Foundation without tax. Contact your plan administrator

for a change of beneficiary form and be sure to use our legal name, Regina Foundation, and tax ID 51‐0158837.
