    Training on Off-Season Tomato Production

The BPSU AbucayCampus is still in activeprovision of trainings for

Off-season tomato produc-tion (Kamlong Technology)to farmers in the province. The training was held inSamal, Bataan and trainedsixty (60) farmers on theuse and implementation ofkamlong technology. Heldon September 7 and 14,2012, the training pro-

vided advanced trainingon the growing and pro-duction of kamlong. It is

known that tomatoes aredifficult to grow during thehot, wet season. Flooding, water logged soils diseas-es and high temperaturescan significantly reduceyield. Kamlong technol-ogy implements graftingtomatoes onto selectedrootstocks of eggplant to

minimize problems causedby flooding and soil bornediseases. Most eggplant

lines will graft success-fully with tomato lines. Thekey is to identify eggplantrootstock that will maintainhigh yields and fruit quali-ty. The lines should also beresistant to bacterial wilt(Ralstonia solanacearum)and other soil borne dis-eases.

    Comprehensive Health Programs

Conducted in Various Areas of BataanProviding health ed-

ucation is one of the major

    thrusts of the Lakbay-Ka-

    linga sa Kalusugan Program

    of the University. Being one

    of the rst universities in

    Central Luzon that offered

    health courses such as nurs-

    ing and midwifery, the insti-

tution has then set its thrust

    on disseminating health

    programs in the entire prov-

    ince.

Sitio Bani in Cat-aning, Balanga City is one

    of the major recipients of

    health programs of the Of-

    ce of Extension services

    Balanga Campus. Being

    an adopted barangay of the

    university, the said barangay

is a primary recipient of ex-

    tension programs sponsored

    by the university. Last July

    3, 2012, a seminar on breast-self examination was con-

    ducted among women in the

    the said barangay in attend-

    ance.

    The said series of

    programs were conducted

to provide a holistic or com-

    plete health awareness pro-

    gram among the residents

    of Bani, Cataning, Balanga

    City. It is important that

health programs are givenin full with emphasis on the

    identied needs of the peo-

    ple in the area.

    According to Mrs.

    Susan C. Laggui, Associ-

    ate Director for Extension
