Muskingum IMPACT: Shaping Our Future

Welcome to Muskingum IMPACT!

Through this new annual publication, we are excited to share results of the University’s strategic action plan, IMPACT 2025, and to thank and recognize Muskingum alumni and friends for their generous support.

IMPACT 2025 provides powerful strategic directions to shape our future.

There is great energy on campus to take action now, so that Muskingum will thrive well into the future with:

• A distinctive educational program, focused on student engagement and success through high-impact learning.

• A dynamic campus environment, with excellent facilities to serve the whole learner.• An atmosphere which actively engages alumni, friends, and strategic partners.• A commitment to reaching expanded audiences and developing new programs to

meet workforce needs.

When I greet new students, I promise them that at Muskingum:“You will be known.”“You will be challenged.”“You will be prepared for the future.”

With your support, we are able to fulfill these promises to the Muskies of today and tomorrow.

Thank you for making a resounding IMPACT in the lives of our students and in Muskingum University’s future!

The David and Karin Kratoville Entrepreneurship Fellows Program

The David & Karin Kratoville Entrepreneurship Fellows Program will help students explore their entrepreneurship interests and extend the culture of innovation throughout the Muskingum community.

“My professors had a very significant impact on me,” David recalls. “Their influence shaped my thought processes, particularly around innovation and creativity. I began my career in banking and later became part of a private-equity backed start-up company which grew into a Fortune 500 corporation. Currently, I’m involved in an angel funding group in central Ohio.”

“We have always felt it was important to support the University, because it made such a difference in our lives,” Karin notes, “We want to make a difference

for Muskingum now and we have a strong interest in helping young business people who want to become entrepreneurs. We’re excited by the innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit we see at Muskingum today.”

David observed that spirit first-hand when he participated in the Living Library program: “I met a great group of smart and energetic students who were either already involved in or working on developing an entrepreneurial business. We feel very good about being able to help students explore these interests. We know how much it means to them and that our support is appreciated.”

David Kratoville ’81 majored in Business and Karin Collins Kratoville ’82 majored in Business and Psychology. Karin’s Muskingum family legacy includes her two grandmothers and an uncle.

Fellows Programs allow students to become part of a cohort group with shared special interests and access to unique opportunities through:

• Engaging with practitioners in the field

• Participating in regional/national conferences, workshops, and competitions

• Completing a personalized internship supported by a stipend

• Connecting with Muskingum alumni and friends in a network of experts

• Leading campus activities and peer education programs to enrich the campus community

! Civic Engagement, Leadership, and Service are integral to Muskingum’s Signature Program.

In the current academic year:

• 79 student-led organizations are active on campus

• 330 students attended Muskie Leader Institute sessions to hone their skills

• 56 students attended the Muskie Leader Retreat for in-depth skill development

• 787 students participated in community service projects

• 5 student groups completed the 1837 Challenge, dedicating 1,837 hours to community service

• 8,937 community service hours were contributed by Muskingum’s Greek Life organizations

The John and Annie Glenn Public Service Fellows Program honors the powerful example of leadership set by John ’43 and Annie Castor ’42 Glenn. This distinctive opportunity for students to explore public service is made possible by a gift from Tom and Ilona Fox.

“We were blessed by what Muskingum did for us,” Tom remembers. “Both Ilona and I were well-prepared by our education and that allowed us to have fulfilling careers.”

Ilona recalls how “Muskingum opened my eyes to learning and to the arts, culture, and history. We are both lifelong learners and enjoy the arts and traveling thanks to the education we had at Muskingum.”

“Supporting this particular program is very significant to us,” Tom explains. “Ilona and I see it as a way to help move Muskingum to a new level of distinction and provide a competitive advantage in recruiting talented students. We believe that graduates who experience the Fellows program will be exceptionally well-prepared, giving them a head start in entering their professional field and making their public service impact.”

Thomas C. Fox ’63 majored in Political Science and minored in Speech. He is a graduate of George Washington University Law School and has practiced law in the Washington, D.C. area for more than 40 years.

Ilona Moore Fox ’64 majored in French, and taught French and English for 20 years in the Arlington public school system. Ilona’s Muskie legacy includes her great-grandfather John Knox Montgomery and two great uncles, J. Knox Montgomery Jr. and Robert N. Montgomery, who each served Muskingum as president.

Supporting Transformative GrowthHub and Mary Marg Marquis firmly believe that Muskingum transforms lives. “We treasure the memories of our time as students,” Hub explains. “Beyond what we learned in the classroom, we learned to give back, to be involved with the community, and to help others.” Mary Marg adds that “Muskingum is very important to both of us, because It is where our life together began.”

“From the first time we met President Hasseler, we were impressed with her vision for the University,” Hub recalls. “Under her leadership, the new action plan sets energizing directions for Muskingum’s future.”

“We are especially excited about the emphasis on health, wellness, and athletics, and are eager to do our part to help Muskingum move forward in those areas,” Hub continues. “We think these are vital parts of a well-rounded experience for Muskingum’s students. We enjoy visiting the campus often for sporting events, and we see first-hand the positive impact they have on student life and community spirit.”

Hub and Mary Marg both began their careers serving on the faculty of West Muskingum High School. Hub later became President and Chairman of the Board of Wallover Oil Company, and he served for 15 years on the Medina City School Board, including two terms as President. Hub and Mary Marg are both actively involved in many community activities, as they continue to live by the lessons they learned at Muskingum.

“Now is a great time to support Muskingum,” Hub says. “We encourage everyone to come back and see the terrific things happening now on campus and feel the excitement and energy of today’s students.”

George “Hub” Marquis ’68 majored in Psychology and Mary Marg Wallover Marquis ’69 majored in English. Married during Mary Marg’s senior year, they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of four children: Susan, Carol, Kevin, and Timothy ’05, who extended their Muskingum family legacy. Since 2011, Jim Gray has served Muskingum as Alumni Council President and member of the University Board of Trustees.

“It’s been a privilege for me to help alumni connect with each other, with the University, and with today’s students,” Jim reflects.

Known to fellow classmates as “The Banker” for his summer job at a bank, Jim’s Muskingum education fueled his lifelong love of music and the arts.

“My love of music began with childhood organ lessons. It more fully developed as a result of the many arts experiences I had at Muskingum, especially performing in the student ensembles. After graduation, as I pursued a career in banking, I was also fortunate enough to serve for 20 years as a church organist.”

Jim’s long-standing generosity to Muskingum has supported Walter Hall and the Smith Library. His most recent gift to the University is for the restoration of the Brown Chapel Organ.

“I’m happy to help start the funding for the organ restoration project so that future students can continue to enjoy the unique experience it brings to musical performances and worship in Brown Chapel.”

Jim Gray ’74 earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Speech Communication. He retired from his career in banking as a Systems Officer for Chase Manhattan Corporation. For two decades, he served as the organist for the First Presbyterian Church in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

Alumni Leadership: Engaging Our Muskie Community

“I’m especially excited about the new initiatives that are providing more opportunities for alumni to come to campus and meet current students. It is very meaningful for students and alumni alike to learn about each other’s experiences and interests, and to create new links within the Muskie community.”

!Muskingum Trustee Patricia Fridley has established a planned gift to benefit Muskingum in the form of a bequest in her estate plan. Planned gifts, including charitable bequests, charitable trusts, and similar gift options, provide for Muskingum in the future.

“I was one of the first in my family to graduate from college. When I graduated from high school, college was not on my mind. I was a bored student, and I could not wait to enter the workforce. Within a few years, however, I lost a promotion because I did not have a degree.”

“I began to take a few courses though Muskingum’s extension classes in Coshocton. The professors were engaging, and I found that I enjoyed learning. I quit my job, enrolled at Muskingum, and completed my degree in two and a half years, including summers.”

Juan Dunlap graduated from Muskingum in May 2018. Shortly thereafter, he made his first gift to the University, becoming a Charter Member of The Muskingum Society.

“I started out at Muskingum as a commuter student. The more time I spent there, the more sure I became that it was exactly where I needed to be. I moved onto campus in my sophomore year and that was really when I fell in love with Muskingum.”

“There’s something magical about Muskingum. There’s a niche for every student to pursue their own interests, and it all takes place within a very welcoming atmosphere that broadens your horizons and allows you to develop friendships that will last a lifetime.”

“My professors completely changed how I thought and felt about education – in every class I took, they made their topics meaningful to me. I was hired for my first job after college because Professor Thompson made sure that his students got out into the professional community, so that we could thrive in the work world.”

“Muskingum helped me exceed my expectations of what was even possible. Earning my degree at Muskingum not only changed my life, it changed the trajectory of my family’s lives. Now I can give back to Muskingum, both during my lifetime and with planned giving.”

“Planned giving allows me to leave a legacy for Muskingum’s future. I know that I am making a difference in the lives of students for many

“I had fantastic experiences taking part in theatre productions and being involved in my fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. It is such a joy for me to be part of Muskingum that I still come back to campus often to serve as my fraternity’s Alumni Relations Officer.”

“It was very important to me to become a member of The Muskingum Society, because Muskingum is so important in my life. My family feels the same way – my younger brother is making his college choice soon and we hope he will become a Muskie too!”

Juan Dunlap ’18 majored in Computer Science and English and minored in Theatre and History. Now an associate with the marketing and communications firm Williams Lea Tag, Juan continues to pursue his passion for theatre with Oglebay Institute’s Towngate Theatre.

Heritage Society membership recognizes living alumni and friends who have provided for the University with a planned gift.

Planned gifts can be made through a bequest to the University in an estate plan or through establishing a gift plan which pays a lifetime income to the donor and then leaves the remaining assets to Muskingum. Other opportunities to support Muskingum include gifts of stock or mutual fund shares, real estate, insurance policies, and retirement assets such as IRA charitable rollovers.

For more information, visit muskingumplannedgiving.org.
