WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA? the means of interactions among people in

which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks

Geocities, created in 1994, was one of the first social media sites. The concept was for users to create their own websites, characterized by one of six "cities" that were known for certain characteristics

The popularity of the social networking sites increased rapidly in the last decade

SOCIAL MEDIA… POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE… Most people associate social media with

positive outcomes yet this is not always the case

Social media may expose children to images of alcohol, tobacco, and sexual behaviors

Excess use of social websites can also lead to:

i. Low gradesii. Time wastageiii. Effects on healthiv. Reduces learning and research capabilities

HYPOTHESIS We think that social media has got more

negative effects than positive on our society

Overuse of these social networking websites can be very bad for students

The negative effects of these social networking sites overweigh the positive ones

Students become victims of social networks more often than anyone else

The excessive use of these sites affect the mental as well as physical health

It is more of a waste of time than social interaction with friends and family
