Objective: Improve traffic safety and save lives through improving street design and urban mobility in Accra

•  Some Public transport vehicles are very old and not road worthy

•  Some drivers are also not qualified to drive the vehicles they use

•  Passenger transport services are unscheduled and drivers wait for their vehicles to fill up before moving.

•  Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) - AAYALOLO Bus system

•  Attempts to provide reliable, affordable, fast, comfortable and high quality bus service

•  A total of 245 state-of-the-art Scania diesel buses, including 85 that will be operated along the three routes on the Amasaman – Tudu corridor which is about 21 kilometres in length.

•  Site assessment report by the BIGRS team

NACTO supported with the Global Street Design Guide for distribution to key agencies

iRAP and WRI have together trained 90 urban planners, road designers and road safety advocates on the use of iRAP road safety assessment software VIDA, and on the theme: Cities Safer by Design.

Selected participants received the Cities Safer by Design Guide to support road and infrastructural development in the city of Accra

Using Crowdsourcing for Improving Crash Data and Road Safety Awareness in Accra

Implementation of Speed and red light enforcement in Ghana, as a tool to reduce accidents and deaths.

Collaboration with Sub Committees

Collaboration with Private Sectors

Formal senior management discussions and agreements between the AMA and Road Agencies are required for the AMA-BIGRS project to achieve direct and tangible outcomes

Active budget line from the AMA to make a positive headway in road safety awareness and behavioral change to support road safety campaigns

….it is a huge task, but we shall get there…. •  Enhanced mobility,

not to be at the expense of precious human lives

•  One life lost is too many to be lost
