IMPACT OF URBANIZATION ON BIODIVERSITY
EBIO -2013 – ANDHRA UNIVERSITY3-4 March 2014
The Growth of human population, improving living standards and modern developments are destroying the Environment which is a Global challenge.
Increased human activities on the nature not only damages the environment and also depleting the natural resources as well
Awareness on conservation of biodiversity is dire need for the present.
INTRODUCTION
Population explosion Changes in the agricultural patterns Migration of Human population to Urban area for
employment Laying of roads, establishment of parks,
construction of buildings, movement of vehicles, use of water resources, dumping of solid waste and municipal wastes, sewage disposal, noise pollution, air pollution, soil pollution and other developments
CAUSES FOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT
Developments in the Industrial and allied sectors
Real estate business Increased Sand mining Rock quarrying for construction activities Brick manufacturing in agricultural lands Excess use of water resources Migration of animal and plant species
CONVERSION OF AGRICULTURAL LANDS
Handling and disposal of solid wastes Composting and Open Burning Disposal of Plastic bags Air Pollution due to burning of wastes Leaching of waste decay into water bodies Soil contamination Garbage dumping
IMPROPER HANDLING OF WASTES
Loss of biodiversity Loss of many plant species Vehicular pollution Industrial pollution Increase in global warming gases Heavy increase in temperature during
summer Heavy cold during winter Heavy Rain, Flooding, Water Logging
CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECTS
Lack of conservation activity on water resources
Dumping of waste into water bodies leads to water pollution and loss of animals and plants.
Heavy sedimentation Unauthorized conversion of water bodies Encroachments
POLLUTION OF WATER BODIES
Deforestation Depletion of grazing lands Water scarcity Increased human activity Noise pollution Conversion of forest adjacent areas into
agricultural lands Cell phone towers
ANIMAL AND HUMAN CONFLICT
Damages to the biodiversity reflects in climate changes
Establishing biodiversity parks, hot spots and protected areas in the vicinity of urban areas
Ban of cell phone towers nearby parks and protected areas
Public awareness on conservation of biodiversity Strict legal regulations and planning
CONCLUSION
