    Technology and ranspor have evolved considerablyin he 65 years since we were ounded. Bu he world is

    sill a very large place, and millions o people remain cu

    o by geography, conics or inadequae ransporaion

    inrasrucure. This is MAFs erriory, our place o

    mission. Our planes and our people are caalyic in

    enabling essenial spiriual and physical care o reach

    hese, he mos isolaed communiies on earh.

    So MAF began. In 1950, we esablished our regularaviaion services in Sudan, aking people and

    supplies o he oherwise inaccessible swamp

    regions o he souh. Over he nex wo decades,

    services were also launched in Kenya, Chad and Tanzania.

    Today, MAF is an exensive proessional inernaional

    organisaion operaing more han 135 ligh aircra in

    over 30 counries.

    The year had hardly begun when an earhquake

    devasaed Haii. Wih he hurricane season jus around

    he corner and he consan hrea o cholera oubreaks,

    he MAF eam worked irelessly o suppor parner

    organisaions in helping o rescue, rea and rehabiliae

    survivors. Generous donaions oalling 200,000

    ensured ha, or he rs hree criical monhs aer he

    disaser, we were able o y round he clock wih ourpilos working on roaion, ying help o where i was

    criically needed.

    Flucuaing exchange raes and rapidly rising uel coss

    led us o make a urher appeal o your generosiy. We

    were overwhelmed by your response, which brough in

    840,000 enough o cover our addiional expenses and

    help keep our ee o planes airborne or he remainder o

    he year.

    This included our PC12 in Kenya, resored o service

    aer breakdown. Is capaciy or long ighs and

    carrying ragile cargos had been grealy missed, and

    almos immediaely i was used o y vial medicaion

    ino Souh Sudan o aver an oubreak o he deadly

    parasiic inecion kala-azar. As a resul, hundreds,

    perhaps housands o lives were saved.And his really ypies wha MAF is able o achieve,

    wih your suppor. A one level, we provide dedicaed

    and dependable aviaion services which enable over

    1,400 parner organisaions o reach more han 2,500

    oherwise inaccessible communiies. Bu he ulimae

    oucome o hose parnerships is lives saved; healh,

    sigh and mobiliy resored; communiies empowered;

    churches srenghened; peace and reconciliaion

    promoed; and people nurured. When our pilos urn

    o make a landing, and villagers hear he approaching

    plane, hey know ha hope is coming.

    Rugged mounains, dense rainores, swamps, a

    widely dispersed populaion o over six million,

    The physical condiions in Papua New Guinea daun

    In 2010, we made over 15,000 ighs,

    Dr Alain Nazair Mbongo-Zindamoyen o Chrisian

    Blind Mission agrees. Wihou your services,

    access o he people in he remoe areas is no

    In Bangladesh, we serve 168 parner organisaions.

    Our regular shutle service rom Dhaka o souhern

    Bangladesh has opened up new opporuniies or hem.

    For example, Helen Keller Inernaional serves over

    20,000 people in souhern Bangladesh; heir projecs

    include helping women o grow heir own ood or

    beter nuriion and income generaion. HEED (Healh,

    Educaion and Economic Developmen) also uses MAF

    regularly; ollowing cyclone Sidrhey aciliaed he

    building o en large cyclone shelers, one shelering over

    6,000 people. They also run an exensive microcredi

    scheme o help vulnerable women se up heir own

    businesses.

    Our parner organisaions rely on us o ge hem o

    housands o communiies ha would oherwise remain

    unreached and unhelped.

    Geting aid o hem is a challenge: Souh Sudan

    is mosly swamp. The war le no working rail

    inrasrucure. The inernaional airpor, such as i is,

    has ew aciliies, equipmen or rained sa. So more

    han 100 aid and mission organisaions rely on MAF or

    ranspor. The saisics speak or hemselves. In 2010, we

    carried over 7,500 passengers and more han 389 onnes

    o aid and equipmen o, rom and around Sudan, ying

    mainly rom our bases in Uganda and Kenya.

    Over wo million people die o an AIDS-relaed

    illness. Millions o people across he globe

    Villagers in Madundas in souh-wesern Tanzania

    up o 300 people in one visi. MAF operaes ying saaris

    like his across he counry, enabling medical eams

    o reach housands who may oherwise no be able o

    access essenial reamen.

    In remoe easern Kenya on he border wih Somalia

    sands Dadaab, home o 300,000 reugees and he larges

    such camp in he world. MAF ies in visiing medical

    eams rom Kikuyu Eye Hospial near Nairobi. During

    one visi in 2010, hey resored he sigh and ulimaely

    he lives o around 200 people.

    In souh-wesern Kenya, World Gospel Mission

    operaes a mobile medical and denal clinic in and around

    Lake Vicoria in places only easily reachable by plane.

    Furher round he Lake, over he border in Uganda, we

    y he Ugandan Medical and Denal Mission o Burkasa

    Island. The alernaive roue involves an exhausing

    eigh-hour journey by small boa across a srech o waer

    as wide as he English Channel. Bu aer heir 20-minue

    igh, he eam arrives rereshed and ready or hard work,

    and able o rea 500 people during heir one- day visi.

    In he developing world where he welare sae is an

    unknown concep, resoring healh means nohing less

    han he resoraion o a lie.

    World Gospel Mission Team leader Pasor Kevin repors,

    We held ree healhcare and denal clinics a

    5 villages across he region, saw 1,665 paiens

    and perormed dozens o caarac surgeries.

    In addiion, we were able o educae

    Over 300,000 died, a similar number were

    injured, and over one million were le

    homeless. Wih he counrys inrasrucure

    all bu desroyed, MAF planes and crews

    became a vial means o reaching and helping he

    survivors rapidly.

    MAF has been based in Haii since 1986, so our

    geographical and pracical knowledge o he counry

    helped us o serve aid and mission parner organisaions

    as hey se ou o rescue and rebuild. For hose wihou

    a base o heir own in he counry, our aciliies a he

    airpor served as a logisical and operaional cenre.

    For 3 monhs, our planes covered 35,000 miles, own

    almos coninuously by a eam o pilos on roaion.

    During his ime, we carried 1,801 passengers including

    injured survivors, medical personnel and aid eams, andranspored 158 onnes o arpaulins, ood, hygiene kis

    and waer puricaion sysems o help survivors. For

    Operaion Blessing alone, we dropped 1,500 ood boxes.

    The work coninued hroughou he year, nanced in

    par by our UK Supporers who, along wih he Scotish

    governmen, generously donaed over 200,000 owards

    he relie eor.

    Nomadic Muslims occupy Chads norhern deser,

    while subsisence armers, mosly Chrisian, inhabi

    Arican pasors and local leaders in leadership skills,

    and promoe orgiveness and reconciliaion wihin heir

    communiies.

    In he norh-eas o he counry, Chrisian Veerinary

    Mission (CVM) eaches pracical veerinary skills and

    animal husbandry o local people. This provides a

    channel hrough which o promoe peace beween

    opposing peoples, which is a paricular passion o

    ounder Dr Val Shean. MAF suppors CVMs mission

    by ying eams across Uganda o where heir skills are

    needed. Dr Shean says,

    minisries.

    Given he naure o he work, our requiremens

    are exacing and he righ people, paricularly

    pilos and engineers, are rare.

    Pilos mus be highly qualied. Engineers,

    i no ully qualied, may have o sign up o hree years

    o raining. They mus be maure Chrisians, able o

    deal reecively wih sebacks. Exensive psychomeric

    ess ensure ha hey will be able o cope wih he

    demands o he job. They will be living as par o he

    local communiy in condiions ha are challenging,

    even harsh. Addiionally, heir work may involve long

    days and irregular hours, ying in conic zones and

    adaping quickly when plans change. Pilo Andrew

    Parker, saioned in Tanzania, says, jus when you

    hink ha you know where youll be or henex ew days, somehing is bound o urn up

    o change i all.Many MAF pilos and engineers need o adap rom

    maerial wealh and independence o a small salary.

    They say in he counry o which hey are posed or

    several years, and mus adap quickly o a very dieren

    culure and challenging environmen and dependence

    on sponsors. They need o raise 100,000 in jus 100 d ays

    o cover heir coss or heir 4-year erm. MAF provide,

    exensive raining and suppor o help hem succeed, bu

    is sill a major challenge.

    Our local ground eams show similar dedicaion: Kenyan

    Gladys Kauku is an MAF engineer in Tanzania. She was he

    only woman in her class o 2003 o graduae wih a degree

    in aeronauical engineering. On-he-job raining wih MAF

    helped her o gain licences in new skills. Even now, aer a

    long days work, he evening is spen sudying or sill more

    qualicaions. Her ulimae ambiion?

    and valued.

    In Ocober, over 500 churches ook par in our Day o

    Prayer. The heme was Friend o he Poor and cenred

    on he journey aken by a young moher o ge medical

    help or her sick child. And our youh programme Above

    and Beyond ook anoher sep orward wih he

    producion o a Youh Worker Resource pack.
