Each year, Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services impacts the lives of thousands of children and families

by providing a comprehensive continuum of care through intensive, evidence-based mental health services. In our aim to always put people first, we work to meet the evolving needs of communities as well as to advance state and national behavioral health care.

The stories in this year’s Outcomes Report share some of the ways our services are impacting the lives of children, families, and communities throughout Los Angeles County. Each story describes remarkable transformation, such as a young boy learning to cope after losing his brother, a young adult’s flight from homelessness, creating greater access to special education services for struggling students, providing a family with tools to manage their daughter’s Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and a family’s journey of adopting three children abandoned by their parents. We are proud to showcase our quality services in this year’s report by sharing personal stories of healing, resilience, and hope.

Arturo and his family struggled to cope with the loss of

his brother, especially when Arturo began to blame himself for his brother’s death. The family realized their desperate need for help when Arturo lost in-terest in school, became aggressive towards family members, and started hurting himself. In Hathaway-Sycamores’ Outpatient program, Arturo’s family was supported through individual and family therapy, as well as parenting classes.

“Starting services was one of the best things we did to help save our family from falling apart.”

In therapy, Arturo was encouraged to talk about his loss and learned to accept that he was not at fault for his brother’s death. He developed coping skills to stay calm and share his feelings with his family. Arturo’s family improved their communication by learning to listen and respect each other’s differences. Arturo is now more motivated to do well in school and is less disruptive in the classroom. At home, he is patient and loving with his siblings, and even helps with household chores. Arturo’s father feels confident his family can handle any conflicts or difficulties life throws their way.

Disconnected from his family, David left home at age 19. Without sup-

port and guidance he found himself homeless and living on the streets of Hollywood. He heard about Hathaway-Sycamores from others and reached out for help. David instantly bonded with the Transitional Living Program staff and felt hopeful when staff told him everything would work out if he committed to his treatment. David started receiving multiple services to meet his many needs, including therapy, housing support, food and clothing, and peer support.

To foster stability, the program encouraged him to participate in the Vocational Internship Program to help him save money for his future. Since David expressed an interest in building and working with his hands, his team connected him to paid work experience as a construction apprentice. Today, David is proud of his ability to survive and make it in the world. He has found work in construc-tion and is confident in his skills to support himself. He has even re-connected with his family and has a support system he can rely on.

“When you’re homeless like I was, you don’t have much to begin with, so to have people look out for you – that’s a blessing.”

fact:California had over 13,000 homeless young adults on a given night in 2013, the highest in the nation.

Failure to help children in crisis often leads to poor academic performance and greater insta-

bility in their lives. Hathaway-Sycamores has part-nered with the Alhambra Unified School District (AUSD) for nearly nine years to offer mental health services on their school campuses. Dr. Bear, Assistant Superintendent of Student/Employee Welfare at AUSD, shared, “the School Based Services (SBS) program fosters communication between students, families, and school staff by addressing the needs of students at-risk or in crisis, and helping them reinte-grate into the school system.”

As Dr. Bear points out, “the team-centered approach aids school staff in understanding how students’ men-tal health needs interact with academic needs.” In an

effort to make a wider impact on the community, we have collaborated with AUSD throughout the years to launch programs, such as the Fresh Start transition program, to help students at-risk for being expelled or dropping out. Dr. Bear shared that the impact of these services is felt in the community, as the student test scores have improved, and students and families feel supported. She added that the relationships established by SBS staff have improved the school climate and fostered students’ safety and well-being. Dr. Bear shared, “Hathaway-Sycamores’ SBS is a model program we want replicated because it is effective in meeting our students’ mental health and academic needs.”

Anna’s Story Anna’s frequent tantrums, fights with her brother, and calls from school left her

mother, Portia, at a loss of how to help her 5-year-old daughter. The family was referred to Hathaway-Sycamores’ Family Resource Center (FRC) by Anna’s preschool. The staff recognized the need to strengthen the relationship between Anna and her mother, and implemented the evidence-based clinical interven-tion, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy. Portia learned better techniques to manage Anna’s behaviors, and began to understand that Anna’s disruptive behaviors and attention problems were part of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Portia focused on staying calm, providing structure, and enforcing consequences at home. Staff encour-aged Portia to help Anna’s teachers apply these skills at school; as a result, Portia reports that Anna is able to sit longer at school, listen to her teacher, and cooperate with her classmates. At home, she listens more to her mother and fights less with her brothers. Portia shared,

“I am more confident as a mother, and I’ve started to share my lessons and experience with my support group of mothers at Anna’s school.” She is proud of how she has impacted her community by sharing the skills she has learned with other fami-lies, and educating them about ADHD.

Youth and Families We Reached in Wraparound

Marissa’s Story Abandoned at a young age by their parents, Marissa

and her siblings were afraid of losing each other as they were placed in foster care. Fortunately, they were connected with loving foster parents who understood the importance for the children to stay together and adopted them in hopes of offering them much needed love and stability. Each child struggled to cope with feeling unwanted and had several mental health needs. Their adoptive parents recognized they needed help and turned to Hathaway-Sycamores’ Wraparound program. The Wraparound team met the whole scope of Marissa’s mental health needs in an effective and compassionate way. The treatment team helped create a stable and safe environment for the children and ensured that Marissa felt supported at school by advo-cating her need for an alternative school.

As Marissa’s adoptive mother expressed, “The love, patience, and compassion that staff showed our family was unbelievable. They taught us how to build positive relationships that ensured each of our child’s mental health needs were addressed and met.” The parents felt that the Wraparound team made a lasting impact on the family because their children learned that although they are adopted, this family is forever.

“We thank Hathaway-Sycamores for always being in our corner, helping our community raise awareness about mental health needs, and advocating for our children’s rights.”
