Imperfe¢tThe imperfect implies a continual action, while the preterite implies something that happened at a specific time.

Compare:“I ate a hamburger.” --PRETERITE“I was eating a hamburger.” --

IMPERFECT

When I was a kid, I played (used to play, would play) soccer every Saturday.

Siempre íbamos a la biblioteca.
