Your Turn

Personal Reflection 1. Have you ever been involved in a

project that was unsuccessful? 2. Why was it unsuccessful? 3. What might have made the difference

between success and failure? 4. Talk at your tables and be prepared to

share for the good of the group

The Science of Implementation

• Students cannot benefit from interventions they do not experience

• Training by itself does not work • Policy change by itself does not work • Financial incentives alone do not

work

Page 8: Implementation of the Common Core: Building Knowledge and ......Kalamazoo RESA • One of 56 ISD/RESAs in MI • Serving 9 Local Districts ... Vocabulary & Comprehension - Explicit

Your Turn

At your tables form groups of four members Silently read the Implementation Brief and highlight three or four items that have particular meaning In turn, members share one of their items Repeat so that each member has a turn in each cycle

Presentation Notes
It takes an estimated average of 17 years for only 14% of new scientific discoveries to enter day-to-day clinical practice (Balas & Boren, 2000) Balas EA, Boren SA. Yearbook of Medical Informatics: Managing Clinical Knowledge for Health Care Improvement. Stuttgart, Germany: Schattauer Verlagsgesellschaft mbH; 2000. With the use of competent Implementation Teams, over 80% of the implementation sites were sustained for 6 years or more (up from 30%) and the time for them to achieve Certification was reduced to 3.6 years. Fixsen, D. L., Blase, K. A., Timbers, G. D., & Wolf, M. M. (2001). In search of program implementation: 792 replications of the Teaching-Family Model. In G. A. Bernfeld, D. P. Farrington & A. W. Leschied (Eds.), Offender rehabilitation in practice: Implementing and evaluating effective programs (pp. 149-166). London: Wiley.

The Charge of the District Leadership Team:

• To make sure we develop the capacity of all staff members to perform the responsibilities demanded by our improvement plan

• To create the organizational structures to support continuous improvement

• Use data to drive the work and planning of implementation

Braiding means

Consider the core features of an initiative, what other current initiatives share these features and may be combined to

– Share resources

– Share activities (e.g., Professional Development)

– Share information (e.g., data collection)

13

Page 14: Implementation of the Common Core: Building Knowledge and ......Kalamazoo RESA • One of 56 ISD/RESAs in MI • Serving 9 Local Districts ... Vocabulary & Comprehension - Explicit

Consideration of non-negotiables when braiding

• Funding requirements

– Features that must be in place to receive funding

• Mandatory program requirements

– Features that are mandated for implementation of the program

• Critical features that define practice

– Features that are critical to fidelity of implementation

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Funding requirements- Are there features that must be in place in order to receive funds.  An example would be a grant that requires an independent evaluator to be involved in the project.Mandatory program requirements (may be linked to funding or may be required without funding)- Are there features that are required for proper implementation of the program.  For example, all schools in Michigan are required to have school improvement plan other states it is only low performing schoolsCritical features that define the practice-Are there features of the practice that are critical to fidelity- if you are missing these components then you are not implementing the practice.  For example, In schoolwide positive behavior supports, you need to collect discipline data and act upon the data, if you leave off this component, then you are not doing Positive Behavior Support.

Stages of Implementation

• Implementation of CCSS (or any initiative is not an event)

• A mission-oriented process involving multiple decisions, actions, and corrections

• All new initiatives must be considered in the context of current efforts

Page 17: Implementation of the Common Core: Building Knowledge and ......Kalamazoo RESA • One of 56 ISD/RESAs in MI • Serving 9 Local Districts ... Vocabulary & Comprehension - Explicit

Stages of Implementation Focus Stage Description

Exploration/Adoption

Decision regarding commitment to adopting the program/practices and supporting successful implementation.

Installation Set up infrastructure so that successful implementation can take place and be supported. Establish team and data systems, conduct audit, develop plan.

Initial Implementation

Try out the practices, work out details, learn and improve before expanding to other contexts.

Elaboration Expand the program/practices to other locations, individuals, times- adjust from learning in initial implementation.

Continuous Improvement/Regeneration

Make it easier, more efficient. Embed within current practices.

Work to do it right!

Work to do it better!

Should we do it?

Implementation Drivers Implementation Drivers 20

Presenter
Presentation Notes
There are three categories of Implementation Drivers: Leadership, Capacity and Competency. When these core components are in place they provide the support to a successful implementation that will be sustained. Competency Drivers are mechanisms that help to develop, improve, and sustain one’s ability to implement an intervention to benefit students. Competency Drivers include: Selection, Training, Coaching, and Performance Assessment Organization Drivers are mechanisms to create and sustain hospitable organizational and systems environments for effective educational services. Organization Drivers include: Decision Support Data System, Facilitative Administration, and Systems Intervention

Driven By Data: Process and Outcome

Data Review KCIC

District Level priorities What do teams, principals need? How will they support next steps? What resources are needed? How will we know if we are successful

Data Review Principals

What are building level priorities? What do teachers need support with? How will you know the right instruction is happening at the right time?

Lessons Learned • Exploration and building consensus takes time! • Braiding must be very intentional • Leadership along the way and at every step of

the way-different than delegating • Initial implementation is easy! Sustained and

full implementation is a different story! • Communication! Communication!

Communication! • We need to stop chasing the shiny objects!
