Introduction

English is known as global language. It is important for us to use in our life no

matter it is in communication, business, self-confident improvement or education.

Different language used in different nations and we are not using the same language

across the world such as in china, people communicate in Chinese and Malaysia’s

mother language is Malay. Therefore, it must be a specific language for us to

communicate and understand what we want to express and that is English. We not said

that other languages are not important but compare to English, English is the widely

spoken language in the world and it is the only language that truly links the whole world

together.

Hasman contends that English has been established as the language of science and

technology. He further states that, at the beginning of the 21st century, 90 per cent of

information in electronic retrieval systems was stored in English, which was generally

recognized as the language of the internet. This trend has since weakened, according to

Coleman (2010, quoting Crystal 2006), but compared to other languages English still has

a dominant role.

In this report, we studied on how important of English nowadays. This report was

to highlight a few of the main findings of different categories which are Chief Executive

Officer (CEO) of different companies, workers with working experiences, lecturer of

college and international student. We seek for their opinion and views about how

importance of English through interview and survey. Result of interview and survey had

analysis and grouping into different categorizations. The reason we choose them as our

interviewee because we think their information and comments may give us better idea

and able to support our topic.

Literature Review

We are doing research on how importance of English in this world. Undoubtedly,

English is representing a ‘lingua franca,’ or as some scholars call it, ‘English as an

International Language’. English language is one of the simplest and easiest natural

languages in the world. It is widely accepted that English has become the language of

choice for many international countries. In the modern world, English has become the

language of not only science but also aviation, computing, diplomacy, and tourism.

Today, English is recognized as undoubtedly the most important language to learn for the

increasingly mobile international community. This is a fact that seems to be irreversible.

English has become the official language of the business and scientific world. (Bilal

Genç. (2010))

English is the most widely spoken native language in the world, and in terms of

sheer number of speakers, it is the most spoken official language in the world. It is the

main language used in international affairs. The English language has official status even

in nations where it is not the primary spoken language. The language of latest version

applications and programs and new freeware, shareware, peer-to-peer, social media

networks and websites is always English. Unquestionably, English is the primary

language of global trade and commerce. In many countries, most tourism authorities and

other officials in contact with the public speak English to interact and engage with

tourists and immigrants. (Smita Menon. (2011))

As we know, importance of English in communication is become very important

day by day. English is vital for communicating with others in school and in the wider

world, and is fundamental to learning in all curriculum subjects. Pupils learn to express

themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others confidently and

effectively. Literature in English is rich and influential. Pupils learn to become

enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry and drama as well as non-fiction and

media texts, gaining access to the pleasure and world of knowledge that reading offers.

Looking at the patterns, structures, origins and conventions of English, pupils can choose

2

Page 3: Importance of English

and adapt what they say and write in different situations, as well as appreciate and

interpret the choices made by other writers and speakers. (Rouhollah. (2010))

English can be at least understood almost everywhere among scholars and

educated people, as it is the world media language, and the language of cinema, TV, pop

music and the computer world. All over the planet people know many English words,

their pronunciation and meaning. It is the means for perception. English is a means not

only for international commerce; it has become increasingly essential for inter-state

commerce and communication. Keeping this in mind, English has a special role to play in

the countries and the Parliament has also recognized English as an official language.

As the second language, we could never ask for questions why even the kids are

already learning with the English language. Since elementary to college, most of the

universities worldwide includes English as one of their major subject clearly shows the

importance of English language literature. Some of the countries are witnessing popular

increase in public demand for teaching of English language from the primary classes.

Besides, in universities and colleges in Great Britain, the Unites States, Canada,

Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, which attract the most number of international

students, the primary language of instruction is English. Most of the top business schools,

medical centers and advanced study institutes are located in North America and Great

Britain, and English is the language used in every activity at these institutions of higher

learning. In most of the peer-to-peer journals and technical periodicals that give

international acclaim to scientists, engineers, technologists, and technocrats, the language

used is English. (Bilal Genç. (2010))

The great demand for admission in English medium schools throughout the

country is a testimony to the attraction of English to the people. Many of the leaders, who

denounce English, send their own children to English medium schools. Many of the

schools in the country have English as the sole or additional medium of instruction.

English is the language of the latest business management in the world and

English has brought laurels to many business managers. Even some of the elite

3

Page 4: Importance of English

personalities chose to learn an English language because some of them planning to

venture businesses in other countries, and the English language could be their gear as

well as tool when flocking abroad for the business purposes. The realization of

importance of English highlights the necessity of every country to have its people

become better equipped with English performance. English may enable a person to obtain

job opportunities, promotions or career advancement. The importance of English has also

sparked a growing interest in using English for teaching. Knowing English opens up the

widest possible job and employment opportunities in many countries and markets.

(Carlos Carrion Torres. (2010))

English is a great trigger for increasing the self-esteem of a person. A person who

speaks English fluently is usually more confident as compared to the person who speaks

it improperly. Therefore, English is very powerful that it has been used when negotiating

with very prominent personalities.

Research Methodology

We are doing our report by collecting primary data. There are few methods to

collect primary data and we have chosen oral interview method and questionnaire

method. In a sense, the oral interview method is also a survey, but the word survey has

become most frequently associated with questionnaires, so that when someone says ‘I’m

carrying out a survey’, it is generally assumed that there is a questionnaire involved. A

survey can be administered in a couple of different ways. In one method known as a oral

interview, the researcher asks each participant the questions. In the other method known

as a questionnaire, the participant fills out the survey on his or her own.

An interview is a conversation between two or more people where questions are

asked by the interviewer to elicit facts or statements from the interviewee. Interviews are

one of the most important methods used to collect information, and present views to

readers, listeners or viewers. By asking opened question such as “ why do you think

English is important?”, we get an almost endless number of feedback from the

interviewee. This gave us a very good idea and it not only enable the interviewee to think

and talk for longer but also show their feelings and views more fully. But it is very

difficult for us to quantify these results because we done interview in different categories.

We need to read all the comments through and to categorise them after the interview and

pick out particular comments which fit to our topic. Therefore, to get the accurate opinion

and feedback from the interviewee, we recorded down the whole interview session and

then only we transfer it into transcript.

As we mentioned before, we have done interview in different categories and it

classified into three parts which are interview on lecturer of college, workers and

companies’s CEO. The reason we choose them as our interviewee because we think their

information and comments may give us better idea and able to support our topic.

Everyone has different opinions and views. For example, accounting lecturer may think

that English is actually not the big deal for the lesson that they are lecturing because

accounting are more focus on calculation. But for marketing lecturer, they think that

English is very important because theories are the things that mainly teach in the courses

5

Page 6: Importance of English

and theories are all in English. So it is important for us to seeking different people’s

opinion since everyone had different thoughts and feedback.

Our second method is set up a set of questionnaire for international students.

International students are being target for our questionnaires since they are come from

different countries from all over the world. A questionnaire is a research instrument

consisting of a series of questions and other points for the purpose of gathering

information from respondents. Usually, a questionnaire consists of a number of questions

that the respondent has to answer in a set format. A difference is made between open-

ended and closed-ended questions. An open-ended question asks the respondent to

formulate his own answer. For example, “how do you feel about.” Whereas a closed-

ended question has the respondent pick an answer from a given number of options such

as true/false or yes/no. We have set up both opened-ended question and closed-ended

question for our questionnaire which is in paper-and-pencil questionnaire administration,

where the items are presented on paper.

Besides that, the reason that we choose to use this method is because

questionnaire is the most commonly used method of gathering information because it is

less costly way to reach more people, including people at some distance. Depending upon

the method of distribution, it can be swiftly done and data analysis can begin right away.

The questionnaire keeps away from interviewer bias, guiding and cues that can impact

the legality and reliability of the data collection. Lastly, we analyze the data we

concluded from the questionnaire into pie chart because it is the most easily understood

format to help us conclude the opinions and views from respondents.

Findings

Based on our interview and survey question, we found out that English is very

important in various aspects. Overall, from the point of view of lecturers, most of them

saying English are important because English is the most widely spoken language in

business. Secondly, if talk in term of academic, it is mainly we find that most of the

subjects taught in universities is English. Besides that, English is very important because

with English, we can gain a lot of knowledge. It can bring us far if a person able to speak

good English and having a high English standard.

There are 2 out of 3 lecturers agree that it would be very difficult for the students

if they don’t understand or cannot speak English well, it would be very hard for them to

express themselves especially during presentation. The Lecturer feel that the students

may be also unable to catch up the syllabus, they may be drop out because not be able to

follow what taught in the class. If they are very poor in writing, it would be difficult for

them and for the examination, the students might face difficult that might not be able to

understand what the content are. The students might be have ideas in mind but with the

poor articulation in English, the message might not be send or comes out in a good way

so hence it would be a handicap to the students. However, there is one of the lecturer says

that poor English standard is not a barrier for them to catch up the syllabus. He feel like

skills is more important since many students who are weak in English but they still can

do well in their exam. Therefore, it should not be an obstacle for their studies.

When come to the questions “Why must a college use English as their medium of

studies?” Miss Eliza feel that the college in a way had is responsible to equip or prepare

student to the outside world, and for outside world, most of them will using English as

their medium since English is the language of business. “If you want to communicate

with people from oversea, and you don’t have any good command in English, I don’t

think that they will be selected in term of employment and it will be their problem to be

employed”.Said Ms.Elizza. According to Mr.Kumar, most of the books available in

market are English version, for that reason, English must be the medium of instructions.

For example course like business and marketing, all the books are in English. “It is

7

Page 8: Importance of English

important that all college should teach in English. If it is not teach in English, the students

will leave behind and it is what we happening now in Malaysia. Students are being left

behind, we are actually moving backwards when the government are not giving equal

emphasis on language.” Said Mr.Kumar. He thinks that English should be given equal

important in Malaysia.

In order to help student achieve a higher English standard, for Ms Eliza, she will

go down to the student’s level of English and make things easier for them to simplify.

Therefore, she will use simple English if she wants to get the message across.

Nevertheless, if the students have no such problem in English so Miss Elizza will just use

normal English to deliver the message during class. While for Mr. Chandran, he says that

due to the entire syllabus is in English, so as a lecturer he will find ways to improving the

student’s proficient in English. So for example he won’t allow them to speak any other

language other than English in classroom, and then students had to finish their work like

assignments in English. Last for Mr.Kumar, he thinks that the standard of English is high

nowadays in the world, therefore it become important for him and other lecturer to

enhance the level of English in the teaching of the subject. So this is actually will help the

students to achieve the better academic and grades and so on. And also to help the

students speak or write better English, He will encourage students communicate in

English especially in class. “Sometimes, I will let them form a forum, debate or talk show

to let them express themselves and also improve their English in other way.” Said

Mr.Kumar.

Based on our results, English is also a play a vital role among workers. Most of

the company is using English as the communication tool. Therefore, they can

communicate well with the foreign customers by using fluent English and for sure they

can get higher salary with a high English standard. However, two of the workers feel that

qualification and experience is more important than English standard because they may

not carry out their works even though they can speak well in English. In Ms.

Philominah’s views, she thinks it‘s all depends on how people handle the interview

sessions. ‘If you can show that you are a capable person, then the management might

8

Page 9: Importance of English

employed you and send you for the training to improve the English proficiency if they

think your English is poor.” Said Ms.Philomenah

In addition, even though two of workers feel that the working experience is more

important than language, but they will still improve their English in order to achieve the

higher position in their career. Nowadays we look at industry; English is widely used

because if we go outstation, we need to communicate in English. For example, in

marketing, telecommunication and customer service department, they should improve in

order to gain the knowledge in a long term career. For the one in higher position, they

need to how to control the other staffs and have to conduct the meeting. So they should

know how to speak because they need to speak to different position of workers and the

only language they using is English. Besides that, In Ms. Nadia’s opinion, she thinks that

if a person don’t improve themselves in that industry, he or she is actually moving

backwards or face the risk like replaced by the one who are better. “The economic

nowadays are going down day by day, if you don’t get ready to improve yourself, you

will soon be eliminated because the competition now is strong. You would find yourself

being replaced.” said Ms.Nadia

Last but not least, there are two out of three managers; Ms.Samantha and

Mr.Gopal will employed the one with lower English standard because they think that

English is just a tool of communication. Working experience will be more important than

the language and they need people with more experiences. Mr.Gopal thinks that he can

send him or her for the training to improve their English standard if the people are poor in

English, so it is not really a barrier or problems for them. And also Ms.Samantha said that

it depends on what kind of job that the person is applied. “I was thinking like in term of

accounting jobs, your experience and technical knowledge will more important than the

language. But of course with different kinds of jobs, let’s say people working in sales or

marketing, probably you need good communication skills then the English will be

important.” Said Ms.Samantha. But for the instructor of Kumon Centre, Ms Lew will

employ the one with higher English standard because if the applicant no working

experience, we can teach them and because of their higher English standard, it is quite

easy for them to understand what the company really want and how’s the company runs.

9

Page 10: Importance of English

If they are hardworking and intelligent, she thinks the working experience will count.

However, if the staff they have no high English standard, it would be very difficult for

them, maybe there might have problems like miscommunication, do not know what the

company actually want.

Even for CEO, they also need to improve their English standard. Three of them

agree that they need to catch up proficiency in English. They might be not always

satisfied with their current English level because English is using in every way. 70

percent of the companies are using English. Ms. Samantha said that if she want to expand

her business in oversea, and to understand their culture or communicate with them in a

better way, she had to improve her English. While for Mr.Gopal, he said that websites

about the stock exchange or money exchange or whatever business online all is available

in English, then he will definitely improve his English in order to get a better knowledge.

In term of improving English skills, Ms Lew think that she would read a lot of self-

improvement book and of course she had like to keep on writing the points that she think

is important and practice the writing skills, thinks of thought.

Conclusion

Most of the universities worldwide include English as one of their major subject.

Hence, we are forced to meet global standards. English is the first and foremost criteria

whether you are applying for a job or you are seeking admission in a reputed college or

university or institution. Companies welcome those candidates who are fluent English

and have the relevant qualification and skill set.

Frankly speaking, it is highly essential to know the language for communication.

In general, the most popular language is English that anyone can understand. So today, it

has become as an ideal language for expressing our feelings. Language so far as we

know, is something specific to humans, that is to say it is the basic capacity that

distinguishes humans from all other lying begins. Language therefore remains potentially

a communication medium capable of expressing ideas and concepts as well as moods,

feelings and attitudes.

Therefore, if English helps students to progress academically, this will lead to

good jobs or even at the local level and improved standards of living. If it leads them to

international jobs the impact is even greater. Those who can use English to acquire more

knowledge and information and to relate with others all over the world become

personally and socially empowered. However, Coleman (2010) cautions that the

importance of English to development should not be exaggerated, especially for those

who have little access to it. Evidently, English is by no means the only route to

development but it definitely plays a significant role.

From the economic point of view, the 21st century is characterized by

globalization of economies and high job mobility. Millions of non-native speakers of

English work in foreign countries where the use of English in the workplace is a

necessity. Even in newly industrialized nations like China, Japan and India, English is

becoming more and more necessary at work. As Warschauer (2000) observes, many non-

native speakers of English need to use English daily in workplaces for presentations,

negotiations and international collaboration. Besides, migrant working is a common

15

Page 16: Importance of English

phenomenon of this age and English plays a central role because it acts as a shared or link

language among migrant workers from other countries (Coleman 2010).

English have some advantage which is allows to communicate us with many

persons from other countries and to travel to other places of the world without the

communication transforms in a limitation. In addition it gives us many more labor

opportunities and allows us to extend our area of work. Another advantage is that we can

read great quantity of texts in English without need to appeal translators who often

disarrange the information; this is one of the advantages that nowadays more favor us as

students since great quantity of books and papers that we must read for tests or seminars

are in English.

On the other hand, the disadvantages are minimal; rather they are efforts that we

must do to learn English. The learning of this language needs time and dedication,

especially for people who cannot learn it easy, like in my case and therefore this might

play against a person with the just time and great academic load. I can conclude that

learns English has more advantages that disadvantages, and though it us turns out to be

often a difficult subject, we must dedicate the time necessary to be able to learn it and

obtain the academic benefits and in the labor future that this language will bring us as

veterinary doctors.

Based on the report we can conclude that English language and learning English

is very important for each one of us as it is extensively used in many international

organizations and is the official language of 53 countries. Knowledge of the language has

become a requirement in many fields like education, occupation and profession. Billions

of people across the world communicate in English to at least a basic level. It is vital in

every area of life and learning. From the report, SEGi College’s lecturers think that if a

student they cannot understand English well, it will be very difficult for their studies and

examination. Besides that, lecturer comments that they will try to use simple English to

speak with student. It enables them easier to understand. For international student from

SEGi College, they think that is not a barrier for learning or speaking English in

Malaysia, because they use English in their daily life and agree that English is

16

Page 17: Importance of English

international language, the only language for them to communicate and their studies is

English. In addition, the workers they will improve their English standard because it can

get high salary and easy to find a high pay job. Moreover, the view from CEO, they will

hire a worker with rich working experience, because the companies have different

working process, so the English language can consider at lastly.

However, although English is very important for all of us but it is depending on

different industries. For example, English is more important than their skills within

services industry such as sales manager, public relation of a company and marketing

researcher. Those positions need to communicate with customers but not selling their

skills. They need to explain the details of products or as a representative to a company by

managing the spread of information between an individual or an organization and the

public.

In contrast, finance industry is not really required English as service industry.

They are emphasizing to skills and qualification that apply on the work. For example,

accountant, business account clerk and auditor, they are just need to apply their account

knowledge on the work. In this industry, skills are much more important than usage of

language because English is just a tool for communication. Therefore, the jobs within this

industry are focusing on the working of calculation and experience.

Lastly, recommend that teach academic English should in the earliest grades.

Instruction focused on academic English should not wait until student is able to read and

write in English. Before English learners are reading, the development of age-appropriate

academic English which is morphology, syntax, vocabulary it can be accelerated orally

through planned and deliberate daily instruction. Focused instruction in academic English

can also build on student’ work with text. For example, when English learners read

expository text that includes academic language, teachers should discuss the text and the

language in structured ways. Instruction should also focus on teaching English learners to

use specific features of academic language related to tense agreement, plurals and proper

use of adjectives and adverbs.

1) Do you think English is important? Why?

Mr. Chandran: “Yes, English is the international languages, so it is good for you to

learn so that you can communicate anyway you go, so English is very important compare

to another.”

Mr. Kumar: “Yes it is very important. It is depends on what content you are talking. But

if you talk in term of business, English is important because English is the most widely

spoken language in business. Secondly, if you talk in term of academic, it is mainly you

find that most of the subjects taught in universities is English. Therefore, English is very

important.”

Ms. Eliza: “English is very important because with English you can gain a lot of

knowledge and be able to speak good English and having a high English standard can

bring you far.”

2.) Do you think a student can catch up with college syllabus if the student’s English

is poor?

Mr. Chandan: “It depends. Not necessary they can’t catch up. There are a lot of students

who even they are weak; they can still do well in their exam. So it is not a barrier, it

shouldn’t be a barrier for your studies.”

Mr. Kumar: “The students definitely will feel difficultly in following the class. Because

most the subjects was taught in English. If your English language is weak, your

understanding is weak, the ability you speak in English is not there, the chances are the

18

student will find difficulty to catch up the .the students may have to actually go for

additional English classes to improve. There are also chances where students may drop

out because not be able to follow what taught in the class.”

Ms.Eliza: “I don’t think so. I think it would be very difficult for the students if they don’t

understand or cannot speak English well, I mean it would be very hard for them to

3.) Why does must a college must use English to lecturing as medium of

instructions?

Mr.Chandran: “Very simple. It is because all the books in market most are them are

English version, for that reason, English must be the medium of instructions. For example

like business course, all the books are in English.”

Mr.Kumar: “Why you say because if you take in the Malaysia context, our two major

languages is Bahasa Malaysia and English. If you said earlier, the widely spoken

language in business are English. Therefore it is important that all college should teach in

English. If it is not taught in English, you will be left behind and it is what we happening

now in Malaysia. Students are being left behind; we are actually moving backwards when

the governments are not giving equal emphasis on language. We not telling that the

Bahasa Malaysia will be forgot or take back stage. What we telling is that we want to

emphasis that English should be given equal important.”

Ms.Eliza: “Is important because the college in a way had is responsible to equip or

prepare student to the outside world, and for outside world, most of them will using

English as their medium because as you can see English is the language of business, if

you want to communicate with people from oversea, and you don’t have any good

command in English, I don’t think that they will be selected in term of employment and it

will be their problem to be employed.”

4.) As a Lecturer, what you will do in order to help your students to achieve a higher

English standard?

Mr.Chandran: “Yes it is. You seen all the syllabus is in English, so as a lecturer I will

find ways to improving the student’s proficient in English. So in many ways, like I

shouldn’t allow them to speak any other language other than English in classroom, and

then students had to finish their work like assignments in English.”

Mr.Kumar: “You see the things is once the standard of English is high nowadays in the

world , therefore it become important for me and other lecturer to enhance the level of

English in the teaching of the subject. So this is actually will help the students to achieve

the better academic and grades and so on. And also to help the students speak or write

Ms.Eliza: “Yes for sure I will improve my English. I would say that majority or the

student is poor in English; I will go down to their level of English and make things easier

for them to simplify. So I will use simple English if I want to get the message across. But

if the students have no such problem in English so I will just use my normal English to

-Miss Samantha-Manager of Metro Holiday Tours

-Mr.Gopal- Administrator of Seng Yiap Enterprise

1) Who would you employed if there are two applicants with different English

standard?

20

Page 21: Importance of English

-A with higher English standard but no working experience.

-B with lower English standard but rich working experience.

Ms. Lew: “I think I will go for the higher English standard. First of all, no working

experience we can teach them because they have higher English standard, so it quite easy

for them to understand what the company really want, how’s the company runs and if

they are hardworking and intelligent, I think the working experience will count. But if the

staff they have no high English standard, it would be very difficult for them, maybe there

might have problems like miscommunication, don’t know what the company want.”

Ms. Samantha: “For me, I will go for B. why I say so? For me, English is just a tool of

communication. So working experience will be more important than the language. And

also here it depends on what kind of job that you are applied. You have to be specified

because for me, I was thinking like in term of accounting jobs, your experience and

technical knowledge will way more important than the language. But of course with

different kinds of jobs, let’s say people working in sales or marketing, probably you need

good communication skills then the English will be important.”

Mr.Gopal: “I prefer the second choices, which is B. Because English is just a metro of

learning and I need people with experience. If people with low English standard, I can

send him or her for the training to improve their English standard. So when comes to

people with experiences, and I train him with English, then he will be a perfect person. .

Let’s say if you asked me any of the company’s CEO they say that higher standard of the

English is important means maybe their company is based on telecommunication or

maybe they are doing customer’s services, marketing or sales department. Yes that is

very important. They will employ the one with higher standard of English but without

working experience. They can train them later how to communicate in phone if they are

good in English already. But one more thing if let’s say the person cant able to speak but

they have working experience, definitely I will employ them.”

2) As a CEO of a company, would you ever think to improve your English skills?

21

Page 22: Importance of English

Ms.Lew: “Definitely, I think we must not always satisfied with our current level like

English skills because English is using in every way so in term of improving my English

skills, I would read a lot of self-improvement book and of course we had like to keep on

writing the points we think is important and practice the writing skills, thinks of our

thought.”

Ms. Samanthan: “Definitely I would like to improve the English standards for better

communication with the clients or senior people in company.” Let’s say for my company

I am going to expand my business in oversea and I can tell you that 70 percent of the

company are using English. Therefore, to understand their culture or communicate with

them in a better way I need to improve my English.”

Mr.Gopal: “Definitely, I need to catch up later with mine proficiency in English also. So

if there have a chance for me to improve my English, definitely I would improve myself.

Other than that, why is very important to improve English is to do trading among the

company. As you can see, for example you go to stock exchange in Kuala Lumpur, the

report is in English. Any websites about the stock exchange or money exchange or

whatever business online all is available in English. So, definitely I have to improve my

English skills as a CEO.”

-Mr.Adil- Coordinator of Diploma In Accouting Subang Jaya

-Ms. Nadia- Coordinator of Diploma In Accouting Subang Jaya

-Ms. Philominah- Coordinator of Diploma In Marketing Subang Jaya

1) Do you think a person with higher English standard will get a high pay job?

Mr. Adil: “For me, English is very important and every company is using English as the

medium of studies. So with good English we can communicate well together with the

foreigner and for sure we will get higher pay with a high English level.”

22

Page 23: Importance of English

Ms. Philominah: “Not really, it depends on qualification and experience that you have

to secure a higher pay job. When comes to pay, I believe that employer will paid

according to your working experience and qualification instead of English standard. It‘s

all depends on how you handle the interview sessions. If you can show that you are a

capable person, then the management might employed you and send you for the training

to improve the English proficiency if they think your English is poor.”

Ms. Nadia: “If you say about having a higher English standard they should be able to get

a higher pay job. In order to get a high pay job I think you need to have other things to

back a person up like example, he or she must be responsible, be passionate and so on. I

think that is a thing that is important too because not just be able speak well in English

for example like some people they are good in English, they can communicate well but

they can’t do the work or achieve the things that a company want.”

2) Would you improve your English in order to achieve a higher position in your

career?

Mr.Adil: “Yes for sure I will improve my English for achieve a higher or better position

in my career. Nowadays we look at industry, English is widely used and then for

maintain a good position so I think English improvement play an importance roles. If we

go outstation we will also communicate in English. To helping a company in success and

generate a higher profit, English plays a virtual rules too.”

Ms. Philominah: “Yes, I will improve my English in order to achieve the higher position

in the career because let’s say, in my career like in marketing, telecommunication and

customer service department, I should improve in order to gain the knowledge in a long

term career. To stay in my career, I have to improve my language. For example, higher

position means how to control the other staffs and have to conduct the meeting. So I

should know how to speak. The different position of workers, how I going to conduct? I

need to speak to them. So only the language we using is English.

Ms. Nadia: “Definitely I will improve my English skills as you can see now English is

very important. If you don’t improve yourself in that industry, you will find out that you

actually are moving backwards or face the risk like replaced by the one who are better

23

than you. The economic nowadays are going down day by day, if you don’t get ready to

improve yourself, you will soon be eliminated because the competition now is strong.

You would find yourself being replaced.”
