Fete and Clearing Sale With our Fete and Clearing Sale only a few days away, preparations are certainly ramping up. We look forward to hosting one of the biggest days for the Avenel community and the weather forecast certainly looks favourable at this point in time. A huge thank you to the extensive band of parents, teachers and students who are combining to make this day a huge success for our school. In addition to being our major financial fundraiser for the year, the Fete and Clearing sale provides us with an opportunity to welcome the wider community back to our school and we look forward to seeing a large crowd on the day. Staging the Fete and Clearing Sale requires a community effort and as many of our helpers will attest from previous years, there is a great spirit of camaraderie and fun during the event. We would greatly appreciate your help (even for an hour or two) and there is a job list in this week’s newsletter to give you an overview of the roles which we need filled. If you are interested in helping out, please complete the reply slip and return to the office. Thanks in advance for your help. Student Absence Reporting Reminder Under new procedures introduced by the Department of Education earlier this year, schools are required to make “same day contact” when a child is absent without explanation. Rather than reporting a student absence to your child’s teacher, I would like to ask parents to report all absences to our office via Compass, email or telephone call. Community Watch: As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, our school had recently been on the receiving end of criminal damage inflicted by vandals. Unfortunately, our local kindergarten has also experienced similar anti-social behaviour resulting in property damage. I kindly ask all community members to keep a watchful eye on our community education sites and report any suspicious behaviour. Remembrance Day Commemorations – Monday’s Assembly At next Monday’s assembly, we will be commemorating the one hundredth anniversary of Armistice Day. Our School Captains will run a special commemoration ceremony as part of our usual assembly. Avenel Primary School will also be represented at our local ceremony on Sunday and we will be laying a wreath in commemoration of the sacrifice of our servicemen and servicewomen. Energy Breakthrough Team Our Energy Breakthrough team are currently in the final phases of their preparation for the Energy Breakthrough event which will take place in Maryborough from November 22nd to 24th. Over the course of two and a half days, our Grade 5/6 teams will deliver a formal presentation and ride their vehicles for approximately 16 hours. The Energy Breakthrough program provides a fabulous challenge for our students and I would like to acknowledge the extra hours of work that our teachers and parent helpers, Victor Nash and Leigh Eeles, put in to running this great program. All the best, Neil
