From Student Services
It is wonderful to see our students embracing the use of our stairs.
In the rare case where a student is injured or has a medical condition that precludes them from using the stairs, please bring a note from either a parent or your treating medical professional to Student Services, detailing how long the use of the lift will be required.
Elaine, our student Services Officer, will arrange to have the Student ID card coded to enable the student to use the lift.

Global Perspectives- Jean Rogers Global Perspectives Coordinator
Year 8 students have been very busy with their “Me in a Box” learning experience. This involved students creating a 20 centimetre cube and presenting it in an innovative way with information relating to them on the box.
The learning intentions for this experience were firstly for teachers to get to know our students and for students to get to know their teachers (each teacher created a box as an exemplar and presented it to each group). Another focus of this assignment is to develop skills in oracy. Students presented their box by way of an oral presentation that was filmed. Many used QR codes for this purpose. Following on from “Me in a Box” students completed a personal recount based on a photograph that they included in their box.
There has been an emphasis on English in the first couple of weeks and we are now moving onto a Project Based Learning Unit on Homelessness. This unit combines History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship as well as English. Students will develop rich inquiry questions and conduct research on the topic of homelessness comparing Adelaide to another city in the world. Students will present their findings in the form of a Museum Display. We will have a look at displays in the Museum, Migration Museum and the MOD so they are able to get ideas for their own displays. On completion of their inquiry, students will work collaboratively in small teams to plan a community action on the issue of homelessness in Adelaide.
Year 9 students began the year with an introduction to what Global Perspectives is and then completed a CSI (colour, symbol, image) on themselves. Again the purpose of this was for teachers to get to know the students and for the students to get to know their teachers. Each teacher presented their own CSI to the group as an exemplar. This was followed by some work on bullying using the short story Herbie by Archie Weller. Year 9 students are now focusing on History beginning with the depth study Movements of People and they are about to start work on their graphic novel.
Exciting times for our year 9 French students who will be involved in WOMAD this year, assisting to build the Ephemeral City. They will be working in collaboration with the French artists and they will be encouraged to communicate in French.
Meet our Global Perspectives team
We plan the learning together and work as a team to support our students.

Sports SA Secondary Schools Swimming Championship- Kylie Trenorden Lifestyle Choices Coordinator
On Monday, 25 February, 11 students travelled to the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre at Marion to compete in the Secondary Schools Swimming Championships. Given that it was our first time entered in this championship and we had quite a small team, the students were exceptionally proud to finish 6th overall in their division on the day. Individually we had some wonderful performances with Pol Altimiras Sala and Ethan Santoro both placing first in their divisions for Backstroke and Freestyle, and Bardia Shafeei and Isabella Smith placing first in their divisions for Breaststroke. However the highlight of the day was the relays with our Under 14 Boys winning their event and our Under 14 Girls finishing second.
All eleven students were fantastic ambassadors for our school and showed excellent organisation, participation and sportsmanship. I have no doubt that in the future, Adelaide Botanic High School will be a force to be reckoned with in the pool!

The Arts - Trish Larkin The Arts and Community Coordinator
The first five weeks of the school year in the Arts has been a wonderful time to get to know our students. We have begun to understand what their creative passions are, whether it be as a creative visual artist or designer, a performer or an appreciator or critic of the Arts. We have worked hard to plan a program for both year 8 and 9 students that provides an opportunity to taste and experience the many wonderful areas of expertise we are able to offer them.
Year 8 “BE BOTANIC” Program
This program consists of four different Arts based workshops that provide disciplinary learning in visual and performing arts. These are Botanic Beats, Botanic Upclose, Botanic Character and Botanic Connect. Each workshop is 320 minutes long providing the opportunity for all students to move through in a rotated program to taste all four experiences. Students will learn many skills including photographing with microscope phone cameras; creating expressive watercolours; creating original sound recordings and sound loops; character analysis, design and performance. The learning outcomes of these experiences will culminate in a connected product of visual and digital media.
Year 9 “BE BOTANIC” Program
Year 9 students have had the opportunity to explore and re-ignite their passions in the creative aspects of the world we live in. The purpose of this program is to enable our year 9 students to taste and explore their interests while developing skills that can be transferred in other aspects of their learning at Adelaide Botanic High School. The workshops consist of Uniquely Botanic, Botanic Hot 10, Botanic Form and Botanic Character. We are quickly moving forward to support them to develop a more elected pathway in the Arts when we move from Be Botanic into our Adelaide Festivals program. Their success in the elements of the Be Botanic program will enable us to inform and support their choice in the next stage of their learning in the Arts.

The Red Carpet is Rolled Out for Year 9 Students- Trish Larkin The Arts and Community Coordinator
On Thursday, 28 February at 4pm the school day was done
and there was a rumble of excitement and anticipation
amongst almost 50 of our year 9 students as they prepared
for an evening at the Opera. Once dressed to impress, our
students had red carpet photographs, dinner on the Botanic
Terrace and a rather warm walk along the river to the
Festival Theatre. As our first appearance representing the
school at a public event we were beaming with pride, their
presentation and behaviour was simply outstanding. What
an event to kickstart our next program where we explore the
Adelaide Festival. Mozart’s, The Magic Flute is an
entertaining spectacle as much as a music masterpiece,
and a performance we selected to observe due to the nature
of it’s connection to many aspects of the Arts. Barrie Kosky,
Suzanne Andrade and Paul Barritt have delivered a well
crafted performance that includes animation, interactive
projection and live action presenting the beautiful music in
an engaging way for all ages.
See a video of the Magic Flute here
A truly special evening and the first of many Arts
experiences for our students at Adelaide Botanic High
School. Thanks to Tom for his wonderful food at a very
reasonable price provided through our own school Café B.
