We are total converts and you will not see us going without them any time soon. The P-2 English class have begun using all of the writing, speaking and reading charts and we have also set individual goals around what we can do next. The professional development I attended in Rockhampton, was completely focused on the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines and the implementation of Kindergarten as part of our school. It was a really good opportunity to talk to other small schools to see what their implementation journeys have looked like, and to track a course for us, at Isisford State School. It was also a rare opportunity to have so much expertise in one room which we could ask questions of and clarify thinking in a, then and there way. Linda Vella was particularly helpful in sorting out our grants and sharing her knowledge. The PnC had a meeting the week before last. Mother’s Day or Mothers’ Day (as you prefer)

How amazing is our community? What a lovely way to spend Mother’s Day with everyone out and walking and smiling. So many laughs and cheeky antics and so much enjoyment.

What I Like About my Mum By Aggie (Year 1)

I like my mum because she helps me with my

homework and getting stuff. I help her with really hard questions as well because I love her.

All About My Mum By Memphis (Year 1)

My mum took me to the pool. My mum went to Longreach with my dad, my brothers and I. Mum went to see my Nan and Pop. We went to the skate park. We went shopping. We went to see Santa and he gave me a drone. I like it when my mum sets up the X-Box and lets me ride my motorbike. I like it when she takes me to the park and when she puts on a movie at night. I like it lots when my mum gives me big hugs.

Mother’s Day by Clem (Year 3)

I love you mum because you give the best hugs and kisses and you are a really good cook. I love that! You are always there for me when I need you. You are the best mum ever and you do any and everything great. I love how you take us places and my favourite thing I have done with you is go to Sea World. I love you mum and will for the rest of my life.

I LOVE MY MUM!!!!!!!!!!!

Mother’s Day By Jaimee (Year 4)

Mum you are the best! I like it when you give me kisses and hugs. I like you so much, I could hug you all day. I hope you have a great day and I will always love you with all my heart. I will never forget you. I like it when you held me when I was a baby and you made me giggle and laugh. I will love you for the rest of my life. I will never ever say I don’t love you because I love you that much you will cry.

I love mummy xoxoxo

Things I absolutely love about my mum by Ms Argus (Acting-Principal)

I love how my mum started to buy me an angel each year for Christmas, just like my Nan used to before she died. I put it next to my bed for the year as a reminder of both my mum and my Nan. It feels very special every Christmas to open that gift from my mum. I also love that my mum does little jobs for me, like making curtains and helping me move.

Maths

Showing a number in four different ways

We also made graphs of our hands and feet last week. The Year 3 and 4 students turned the data

into a table and worked out the difference between different student’s feet size.

Our graphs that we created.

We discussed who had the longest hands and feet. We also learnt that you must be very specific about things when you are measuring so that everyone measures in the same way. Sometimes our Prep students had longer hands and feet than our Grade 2’s. We also worked on telling maths stories to match number sentences. This was hard, but Agatha surprised us all and got the hang of it really quickly.

HASS By Jaimee, Hayden and Rangi (Year 4)

In HASS we have been learning about the gold rush. There were people that arrived at

Sydney Cove. The Blue Mountains were too high to get across but they met an aboriginal person who knew the country well and got the men across. It took 27 weeks to make a road across the blue mountains and 21 days to cross it. In 1851 Edward Hammond found the first piece of gold and lots and lots of people came from different countries. Some people had to sell their houses to get to Australia that Edward Hammond found gold in.

IMPACT Comprehend It! by Clementine (Year 3)

On Wednesday in week two I did my final test for Comprehend It! over IMPACT. It was a little tricky but at the same time interesting. The test was answering 15 questions about a text. Some were short answers and others were long. I enjoyed it. A few days later, I received a certificate in the mail that said that I am good at comprehending and that I did well at attending the lessons. I am really, sad that my 12 weeks have finished and unless I

get signed up to another one. I do not get to do it again. Luckily, Ms Argus signed me up for Digital Technology in Semester 2 so I will have another go.

IMPACT – Digital Technologies By Hayden (Year 4)

When Rangi, Jaimee and I do impact we have a teacher named Miss Katie. She helps us though out Impact. There are also other schools who join us in the middle of the lesson or sometimes, we are the last ones to be there. When we do Impact or technology we do coding. We code with a turtle named Tina the Turtle. We also play a game and make our own Scratch games. It doesn’t take long, because the server is already made and I just needed to do the coding. You can see how it turns out by pressing run, then the turtle is there making a pattern or shape, well what ever pattern was put in there.

L.O.T.E. (Language Other Than English)

by Hayden and Rangi (Year 4) and Clementine (Year3)

In the last lesson of L.O.T.E. we started our speaking test. We did not get far into it before we had to stop. Why we had to stop is because it was the end of our lesson. We practised a bit before we started our test so that is why we did not get far into the test. We have this game where we have to guess what Sensei is saying in Japanese. Sensei means teacher in Japanese. We also say numbers from 1 to 10 in Japanese. Our lesson goes for about 45 minutes and our topic is about what is in our bedroom. We all enjoy our lessons with each other.

Science by Rangi (Year 4)

In science, Kindergarten to Year 4 planted seeds to grow for our science assessment. In science I think we are learning how things grow. When we were in Japanese, the Kindergarten to Year Two students decorated their plant pots. When Agatha decorated her cup she put a smiley face on it and made her lips up to the eyes. Kohi made red and

blue eyes and eyebrows and a brown nose. Some of us would like to decorate ours as well. I wonder if we will. The K-2 Class have had someone delivering notes in bottles at the school over the last couple of weeks. Inside the bottles are tasks for them to do and when they’ve done them, they return their answers back in a bottle. There was so much excitement when they found the first one.

Goal Setting This week as part of our drive for continual improvement we worked on goal setting with the students. The students set two goals one in maths and one in english. These goals have been set by the students personally, now that they have knowledge of what they need to know, and what they need to do this term. The goals are written as, ‘I want to be able to …’ statements and some have been placed on their desks as reminders of their commitment to growing in this area.

Kindergarten Focus Our kindergarten QKLG (Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines) uses a continua approach. The learning and development areas describe the knowledge, skills and dispositions that children explore during the kindergarten year. The learning and development areas include: identity, connectedness, wellbeing, active learning and communication. Our focus for staff development for this week is on identity, but we thought we’d take you all along for the ride. Identity Children build a strong sense of identity through connections with their families, peers, teachers and communities. Identity is not static – it changes over time and is influenced by an individual’s cultural identity and relationships. Through these relationships, children develop a sense of belonging, confidence in others and in themselves, and an awareness of their own culture. They gain confidence in their abilities, a

sense of agency in their decision-making and develop their independence.

Key Focus: Building a sense of security and trust Teachers use intentional teaching practices such as: - Collaborating with children and their families

to make them feel welcome and valued

- Modelling how children can seek help and

comfort

- Proving learning opportunities for children to

learn and engage with new experiences

- Providing choices about environments, and

spaces for children to feel calm and

comforted

Students/children are then placed on the continua. They have multiple opportunities to engage with each learning and development area, just as our P-4 students have multiple opportunities to engage with each aspect of their curriculum throughout the year. The purpose is to identify the strengths of each child/student.

New Resources We used many of our new resources this week. We used long and short vowel dominoes, our 100 board and one of our new big books with the hand puppet sets, The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We made a bridge out of a cardboard box for the goats to walk over and the troll to hide under.

Aggie (Year 1) with our new 100 board

The 100 board has different plates which can be put on. Lacey is putting on the number words. We also have an

expanded notation set.

Art and Craft Fun With the Sheep and Wool Show coming up, I thought I would begin some art/craft afternoons on Tuesdays and Thursdays straight after school from 3-4pm, for anyone interested in attending. This is a community event, so everyone is welcome. I will teach chalk pastels this Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. On Thursday you can let your inner-Picasso out, and practice using the

techniques by creating an artwork of your own. Feel free to work from a photo, if that is your preference. Please don’t expect anything too professional, but I will lead you through the techniques of using a different type of material and will help problem-solve to the best of my ability the tricky bits. We will be doing this in the kitchen at school as it is the easiest place to clean up. Chalk pastels are great for all kinds of drawings, but we will be focusing on landscape as it is the most foolproof – everyone will succeed. I hope to see you there.

Our Prep students are Writing!! It’s so exciting that our Prep students are beginning to put together their letter and sound knowledge to begin writing sentences. A benefit of a multi-age setting is that they want to be just like the big kids!
