Whether it’s a project file coming in from a sub-contractor or customer it’s not uncommon to get an error similar to this “A Version 6.2 XER cannot be Imported”. Of course this refers to the particular version number 6.2, it could be any Oracle Primavera P6 version. The common solution to this problem is to ask for the file to be in a format suitable for your version of Primavera P6. Another suggestion, particularly favored by Oracle, is to upgrade to the most recent version of Primavera P6. One quick tip that works more often than not, is to simply open the XER file in a text editor like Windows Notepad. At the very top on the right hand side, you will see the version number, for example, “6.2.x”. Simply change this to “6.0, save the file and you will then be able to import it. We have found that this works reliably between all the versions that we’ve had to work with on site. There are some additional fields in the later Primavera P6 versions that, understandably, get dropped when importing like this. Of course, you should carefully check your data and make sure everything is OK and that there aren’t any anomalies.

Importing XER Files From Newer Versions Of Primavera P6 03/07/11 by Ten Six Consulting

There are times when clients are trying to import XER files from newer versions of Primavera P6 and encounter difficulties.

Simply change this to “6.0″, save the file and you will then be able to import it.

We have found that this works reliably between all the versions that we’ve had to work with on site. There are some additional fields in the later Primavera P6 versions that, understandably, get dropped when importing like this. Of course, you should carefully check your data and make sure everything is OK and that there aren’t any anomalies.
