Mélange

K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research (SIMSR) has always pioneered encouraging its stu-

dents to devote themselves towards the betterment of society in a way that adds value to their corporate as well as

individual life. In lines with this, Melange’14, the annual intercollegiate event of SIMSR, was set around the theme

of ‘a better tomorrow’. In other words - a small step towards creating a beautiful future.

As every year Melange gets bigger and better, this year was no exception. Melange’14 was one memorable event

filled with fun, enthusiasm and lots of learning. The event held for three days from 14th to 16th of February created a

huge buzz among B-schools across the country and participants turned up in numbers from institutes like S P Jain

(Mumbai),IIM Indore, SIBM Pune NITIE(Mumbai),IMT Ghaziabad,

SJMSOM(IIT Bombay) and many more.

As a part of pre-Melange’14 activity a blood donation drive in associa-

tion with Lion’s Club for Samarpan Blood Camp was organized on 11th

of February. About 150 people including students from SIMSR, faculty

and staff registered for blood donation, out of which, 100 candidates

were able to donate blood as the donors went through a series of medi-

cal check-ups before donating blood.

The various management events spread across three days touched upon

all aspects of management. With the ever changing corporate world,

these competitions added value to the students learning.

Following are some highlights of these competitions -

Alpha Manger was a real test of talent for all budding mangers including all facets of management from HR to PR.

The winners truly proved to be real alphas willing to take on the corporate world ahead.

Stratinnova the event for strategizing, tested the acumen of the students on how will they apply their knowledge in

an actual real world scenario. The event enriched the students with new ideas and innovation.

Commercio undoubtedly offered a platform to the participants to formulate country entry strategies for a particular

sector, based on the in depth analysis of the country with respect to various parameters like political, legal, economic

and social; strategies for MNEs to enter into that country using Porter diamond theory and Porter’s five forces

model.

Jigayasa was a case study competition which was built on a hot topic of retail management serving as a platform to

enhance the real marketer in students.

Kurukshetra Battle Contest (KBC) tested the students on the divine and sacred knowledge of Ramayana, Mahabha-

rata and the Bhagvad Gita. The event encouraged the students to acquire knowledge from our rich culture and be-

come future managers with ethics and values.

Green Trade this competition was the need of the hour as it focused on the environmental issues that the world is

facing today. It helped Melange achieve its aim for a better tomorrow.

Finstruct was a hard core finance competition which enabled the future Raghuram Rajans and Amartya Sens to dis-

play their finance expertise in a case study to restructure a sick company.

All this and many more competitions made Melange’14 a fest that enriched the management skills of students and

reach a level closer to the corporate world. However, it’s not only about the learning, it’s also about the fun, play and

excitement. The cultural of Melange’14 were the best among all these years.

Day 1 : The opening bash with Bollywood touch

The event was inaugurated by our Director, Dr. (Prof.) Satish Ailawadi and Faculty Coordintor, Dr. (Prof)

Ramkishen Y and it kick started with culturals ‘Burn the Dance Floor’ the ultimate dance competion. And first time

in SIMSR, bollywood stars made their presence felt. Amit Sadh (Kai Po Che actor male) and Tapsee (the Chashm-e-

Badoor actor female) interacted with students and made the evening memorable.

Day 2 : The musical day

The head banging, cheering, singing, and enjoying the music was something that the War of Bands was meant to sig-

nify. The Country's most musically gifted teams showcased their talent in this competition. There were truly some

unforgettable moments like the adrenaline rushing roadies, the mesmerizing Razzmatazz (salsa workshop) and the

thrilling stunt show. Well Roadies was a test of patience and endeavour for young SIMSRites, Razzmatazz was a two

day workshop on the Latin American inspired dance art form – Salsa, and the bike stunt was a surprise to SIMSR

from Melange team, a display of nerves and control with fearlessness.

Day 3 : The most awaited and coveted day of melange

Very few institutes in this country offer a huge landscape and ‘Mad over Booty’ made sure SIMSRites explore it in a

mindboggling treasure hunt. The climax of such a great event had to be grand and pompous. And yes it was indeed.

First time in the history of Somaiya, ‘Sunburn campus’, an idea of Percept Company was held, an event that rocked

every brick and sole in this institution.

With new experiences, memories, and learning the students bid Melange’14 farewell but not without the zeal to take

on excited planning, ideas and hopes for many more such events in years to come.

Alumniscence

SIMSR has a long and enviable list of alumni who have ascended and proved their mettle across the spectrum of

business world. Our institution remains a nurturing ground for the new generation of aspiring managers and continu-

ous learning comes naturally.

Alumni committee, in its endeavour to foster sharing of knowledge and perspectives, invited Mr Sanjay Shah to the

campus to deliver a talk to the current students, which he kindly agreed to.

Mr Shah is an alumnus of the batch of 1992 and has had an illustrious professional journey so far. He currently

serves in the capacity of Managing Director at Morgan Stanley. He has extensive experience in capital markets and

is known for his deep insights regarding the same.

Speaking to the attendees who included students and faculty members, he spoke at length about the current macro-

economic scenario and how he perceives the sentiment in the markets. He discussed the opportunities and looming

threats to Indian economy and how policy decisions (or lack of them) affect the financial ecosystem. He mentioned

how his career progressed over years and how one has to be constantly learning. He happily answered the questions

posed to him by the curious crowd and offered his take on things. Students found Mr. Shah very humble and the talk

extremely enriching. He signed off saying that in addition to all the hard work and knowledge it is very important for

a manager to be confident in order to make a pitch.

Concluding the session, Professor Manish Gupta thanked him for his valuable time and audiences for their

enthusiasm.

Call it Vasant Panchami or Sree Panchami or Saras-

wati Puja, the greatest festival of spring for Indians

was celebrated with pomp and grandeur this year

as well at SIMSR. Keeping up with the traditions till

date, we SIMSRites, on the auspicious morning of

4th February, 2014, gathered together to worship

the Goddess of Learning in our very own institute

campus. It was mainly organized by the Bengali As-

sociation of Students of SIMSR with unconditional

support from the entire student fraternity and fac-

ulty. Preparation for the puja had begun a week

before; wherein stationeries were bought, decora-

tions were done, and the idol was finally brought to

adore our campus. The goddess was worshipped in

many modes such as floral offerings, Prasad, new

notebooks, and pens. With girls clad in yellow saris

and boys in kurtas the entire campus wore a happy

look on this sacred occasion.

After early morning prayers or “Pushpanjali”, the

delicious “bhog” was distributed to all the students

A pinch of Bengal in the heart of Mumbai

and faculties, who turned up in large numbers. The

idol was worshipped the next morning as per rituals

and delicious dessert named “Dodhi Karma” was

served to all the visitors at that time. In the evening

we finally bid adieu to Ma Saraswati for this year as

the idol was immersed in the waters with a stronger

belief in our hearts -“ Asche bochor abar hobe” (In

Bengali it means - Next year we will again welcome

the Goddess to our campus.)

There goes a famous belief that it is always nerve

wracking to hold shows on Saturdays as it can either

make you swim or sink. Well, one such lazy evening

at SIMSR campus on the 22nd of February 2014, did

turn the mentorship initiative by the alumni com-

mittee into a true story of success when we wel-

comed our highly esteemed and adorable Alumna

Ms. Shweta Vora to our campus to enlighten our stu-

dents on Credit Ratings.

Ms. Shweta Vora has been working as a Credit ana-

lyst at CRISIL since last 3 years and thus had invalua-

ble insights into the different work domains of CRI-

SIL. She graduated from SIMSR in the year 2010 and

has been working with CRISIL ever since then. Her

area of expertise includes Credit analysis, Corporate

Finance, Financial Modeling, Equity Research, Credit

Risk etc.

The session began with a brief introduction on Ms.

Shweta herself and then she took over the discussion

to explain how CRISIL in reality rates companies. As

she mentioned, CRISIL ratings are of 3 different

types, namely Corporate rating, Financial Product

rating, & FIIs Rating. These ratings are mainly arrived

at by a team working through rigorous set of rating

processes at CRISIL. The lucidity with which Ms. Vora

explained the complicated know-hows of Credit

Ratings kept each and every participant engrossed in

her lecture. She stressed on the fact that there is

much more than only number crunching jobs in fi-

nance but and thus encouraged students to pursue a

career in Finance. After the classroom session, she

also told us about her College days, how they used to

have fun and how much she misses the institute till

date. As she left the campus, she also promised to

come back to SIMSR whenever time would permit

her and be a part of a number of events organized

by the Alumni committee in order to strengthen re-

lationships with the college and people around it.

Lighting the bonfire in Lohri, symbolizes

offering prayers to Lord Agni (god of fire)

to shower blessings on the land with abun-

dance of crops and prosperity.

Amidst the cold weather on 13th Jan 2014,

members of the Students Activity Forum

(SAF) at SIMSR celebrated the long-

awaited bonfire festival Lohri in the insti-

tute campus. A bonfire was lit and was

encircled by students and few staff mem-

bers as well.

The celebration witnessed students gath-

ering for the bonfire, dressed in ethnic

who danced to the tunes and beats of the

traditional dhol and sang Lohri songs. Stu-

dents also offered peanuts, popcorn and

sweets made of ‘til’ and ‘revri’ to the ho-

ly Lohri fire.

Students celebrated the spirit of brother-

hood and oneness, while thanking the Al-

mighty for a bountiful life on earth. It was

a fun-filled evening that helped students

rejuvenate and rejoice.

“One man practicing sportsmanship is far better

than 50 preaching it.” – Knut Rockne.

Very rightly quoted by Rockne, amidst all the hus-

tle-bustle of ever-hectic MBA life, sports opens the

door for reviving the spirit of winning. With this

idea in mind, SIMSR Sports, the official sports

committee of K J Somaiya organised Yudh (the

famous Inter B-school Sports festival) from 7th to

10th February.

More than 12 premium B-Schools including

JBIMS, SJSOM, NITIE, SIMSREE, S P Jain,

NMIMS participated in the festival making it a

huge success. But that’s not it, before this event the

active members of the committee conducted Sports

quiz, Counter-strike, Need for speed and Box-

cricket which was enthusiastically accepted by

players.

From athletics to indoor games like chess, badmin-

ton, table-tennis and squash to outdoor games like

Cricket, football, tennis, throw ball, and volley-ball

was organised. The first day was mainly a get-

together and elimination day, as in many games the

format was knock-out. All the players were ex-

pected to register before-hand and the fixtures were

mailed. With the help of specific arbiters and refer-

ees, all the games were conducted in parallel. Final

rounds of most of the games were conducted on the

second day itself and only few games such as foot-

ball and cricket had final rounds on the third day.

Gradually the competition became fiercer and only

the fittest survived.

Each of the participants, winners and runner-ups

were given a certificate of participation and medals

of honour respectively. While the out-side players

were pleasantly surprised looking at the sports fa-

cilities in SIMSR, the main attraction was the open

chess board, squash stadium, and the race track.

Recently in another event the famous athlete P. T.

Usha ran in the same race-course.

In athletics, more than 18 players participated in

which the winner was SIMSR and the runner-up

was SJMSOM, IIT Bombay. Badminton was quite

engaging in boys, in which final winners were NI-

TIE and the runners up SIMSR. In ‘Battle of

Minds’, NMIMS made it to the top, while next was

IIT Bombay.

In Squash, NMIMS team easily out-played other

teams and won both first and second position.

Players of TISS displayed excellence in basketball

acquiring first rank while in volley-ball they stood

second. SIMSR emerged as winner in football,

throw ball, lawn tennis, table tennis and athletics

and naturally as the over-all winner of the event

with maximum points.

Just to note, SIMSR Sports, guided by Prof. Man-

ish gupta and managed by Saumil Maheshwari,

Anshul, Nivedita Prakasham and team, recently

emerged as an over-all winner in Josh (a similar

sports tournament), conducted by NITIE.

In addition to Yudh, the flag-ship event of SIMSR

Sports, the committee also organises Elan-e-Yudh

and Kurukshetra as an inter-class sports competi-

tion. To conclude, Sport has a unique power to

attract, mobilize and inspire. By its very nature,

sport is about participation and this is exactly what

this committee spreads, encourages and achieves.

spoke about K J SIMSR quite fondly. Taking us up

the staircase of his professional journey, he shared

with us how he began his fruitful career with Vilco

Labs and then progressed with companies such as U

S Vitamins (India) and Cynamid before he initiated his

successful association with Wyeth Limited. He also

very graciously offered to be a part of the ongoing ac-

tivities conducted by ALCOM whenever possible.

When requested for tips for young professionals, he

suggested that developing a healthy relationship with

the company helps in the long run and though reaching

out for better opportunities is a welcome idea but one

must give each career stage sufficient time to grow to

get the best results.

Mr. Chinmay S Gheewala, Group Head —

Marketing Wockhardt

In the month of February, we had the opportunity to

meet Mr Chinmay .S. Gheewala who is currently

acting as the Group Head, Marketing, Wockhardt

Hospitals. Based out of Mumbai, Mr. Gheewala has

had a career of love and passion with Wockhardt

Hospitals which was his maiden organization after

he graduated from Our Institute. As the conversation

went on, on one hand, Mr. Gheewala shared with us

his love for his company and his role in the organiza-

tion; on the other he enquired about different activi-

ties going on in the campus and activities undertaken

by The Alumni Committee.

A true marketer at heart, Mr. Gheewala admitted,

though it is difficult to sell products in the Hospitali-

ty Business, the key to success is only to focus on

building relationships with the customers beyond the

business arena. He also shared his views on various

latest happenings in the marketing world, especially

in the field of digital marketing, which he feels

would be booming in the coming decade. As a de-

parting message, Mr. Gheewala left us with an en-

couraging thought that if only one pursues one’s

dreams and follows one’s heart, one will be happy.
