About Dell Display Manager

Ourdual-displayconfigurationusedDellDisplayManager,aMicrosoft® Windows® application supported by select Dell models. According to the Dell Display Manager User’sGuide,2 it allows users to manually adjust the displayed image, assign automatic settings, manage energy usage, organize windows, rotate images, and more. The “Easy Arrange”featureletsusersefficientlypositionallopenwindowsinapredefinedorcustom layout.

Selecting a display that addresses multiple business needsImagine the IT purchasing department for an organization with thousands of employees, many of whom spend all or part of their work lives in front of computer screens. When employees start complaining about their aging displays, the buyers investigate new alternatives. For all purchases, they must consider evergreen concerns, such as improving productivity and reducing unnecessary costs, and emerging organizational initiatives such as employee wellness.

Noteverypurchasewillsatisfyallthesegoals,buthowcoolwoulditbetofindadisplaythatcheckedeverybox?Weconducted a series of tests and learned the following:

1. Twonewdisplaysarebetterthanoneolddisplay.Themedianparticipantinapaneloffiveuserscompletedacomplexofficetaskin6.1secondslesstime,orasavingsof21percent,onadual-displayconfigurationofthenewDell24Monitor-P2419HwithDellDisplayManagerversustheoldermodelinasingle-displayconfiguration.

2. Workstationsetuptook72percentlesstimeontheDell24USB-CMonitor-P2419HC.Weconnectedamouse,keyboard,andtwoUSBdrivestotheUSB-C-enableddisplayinsteadofthelaptop.WethenusedasingleUSB-CcableasthemainconnectioninsteadofdealingwithanHDMIcable,USBdatacable,twoUSBdrives,andapower adapter every time we connected and disconnected the laptop to and from the older display.

3. ThebaseofthenewDell24Monitor-P2419His15percentsmallerthanthatoftheoldermodel.Movingtothesingle-displayconfigurationofthisdisplaywouldgivetheorganizationtheoptionofselectingdeskswithsmaller work surfaces and/or allowing workers to place the display closer to the wall, increasing their chances of obtainingtherecommendedviewingpositionofbetween50and100cmandfreeingupvaluabledeskspaceforother purposes.3

4. ThenewDell24Monitor-P2419Hinasingle-displayconfigurationconsumed22percentlesselectricitythantheolder display, which translates to cost savings.

DellP-Seriesdisplaysofferanarrayofadjustmentoptions that make it easier for users to position the display for a comfortable viewing experience. For productivity, two is better than oneCertaintasksrequireofficeworkerstomovebackandforthbetweenmultipleapplicationsordocuments.Manyofficeworkersusemultipleapplications.Withonedisplay,thiscanmeanchoosingbetweentwomediocrealternatives:(1)jumpingbackandforthbetweenwindowsor(2)shrinkingwindowstoanannoyinglysmallsizetopositionthemsidebyside.Wouldequippingthesefolkswithdual-displaysetupsallowthemtoworkmoreefficiently?

WehadfiveuserscompleteareportbycopyingandpastingmaterialfromdifferentsourcedocumentsinMicrosoftOfficeapplications.Eachparticipantperformedthesametasktwice:onceusingDell24Monitor-P2419HP-Seriesdisplaysindual-displayconfigurationwiththeDellDisplayManagerEasyArrangefeatureandonceusinganolderDell24Monitor-P2414Hinsingle-displayconfiguration.

As the chart below shows, every participant completed the task in less time using the dual-display setup than using asingledisplay.Somecompletedthetaskfasteronbothconfigurations,whileothersrequiredmoretime,basedonpersonalability.Themediantimetocompletethetaskswas23.7minutesontheDell24Monitor-P2419Hdual-displayconfigurationand29.8minutesontheDell24Monitor-P2414Hsingle-displayconfiguration.So,Participant2,ourmedianuser,completedthetaskin21percentlesstimeonthedual-displayconfiguration.

How the productivity savings could add upWhilefourorfiveminutes—theaveragetimeourtesterssaved—mightnotsoundlikemuch,thetimeaddsup.Someemployeesspendmostoftheirworkdaysmovingbetweenapplications,whileothersdosolessoften.Forexample,sayaworkercompletesatasksuchastheonewetestedonceperworkday.Inatypicalfive-dayworkweek,thatemployeewouldsave23minuteswiththenewDelldisplay—that’sover2.4workdayseachyear.4 Across2,000employees,thattimesavingswouldequal4,792daysperyear.BasedontheU.S.Departmentof Labor average compensation costs for professional employees, that productivity translates to a gain of$2,314,183.5

No such thing as an “average worker”

We based potential savings on an hourly total compensationcostof$60.37(includingwagesandbenefits),theU.S.DepartmentofLaboraverageforcivilian workers across the country in the “Management, professional,andrelated”occupationalgroup.Thatfigurevaries greatly depending on factors such as location, industry, and occupational group. Depending on these and other factors, companies may realize greater or lesser savingsthanthosewequote.

How USB-C connectivity saves timeIn this scenario, we measured the time differences between connecting and disconnecting a laptop and accessories toandfromthenewDell24USB-CMonitor-P2419HC,avariantofthestandardmodelthatincludesUSB-Cconnectivity,comparedtotheolderDell24Monitor-P2414H.Thisisimportantbecausemanyusersconnecttheirlaptops not only to displays, but also to peripheral accessories such as keyboards, mice, and external storage. For those who unplug their laptops to attend face-to-face meetings, connecting and disconnecting cables repeatedly during the workday can be a hassle.

SettingupaworkstationontheolderDell24Monitor-P2414HrequiredconnectinganHDMIcable,aUSBdatacable,twoUSBdrives,andapoweradaptertothelaptop.WiththenewDell24USB-CMonitor-P2419HC,weconnectedthemouse,keyboard,andtwoUSBdrivestothedisplayinsteadofthelaptop,usingasingleUSB-Ccable as the main connection. This meant we had only one cable to deal with every time we connected and disconnectedthelaptopinsteadofmultiplecablesandaccessories.USB-Cconnectivity,whichcandelivernotjust video and audio signals but also data and power to charge your notebook, makes this arrangement possible.

Footprints—important to office workers as well as detectivesThe long hours that many employees spend at their computers each day can threaten their physical well-being. AccordingtoTheVisionCouncil,anindependentauthorityintheopticalindustry,32.6percentofAmericansreporteye strain from their digital devices. Americans also report the following experiences:7

• eyestrain(reportedby32.6percent)

• dryeyes(reportedby22.7percent)

• headache(reportedby21.4percent)

• blurredvision(reportedby22.0percent)

• neckandshoulderpain(reportedby30.8percent)

Positioningdisplayscorrectlycanhelpmakeworkstationsmoreergonomicandpreventdigitaleyestrain.TheU.S.OccupationalSafetyandHealthAdministration(OSHA)statesthatthepreferredviewingdistanceisbetween20and40inches(50and100cm).8Since2010,theamountofofficespaceperU.S.employeehasbeendecliningsteadily.9 Asofficesshrinkanddesksfollowsuit,asmallerdisplayfootprintbecomesincreasinglyimportanttohelpworkersachieve this optimal distance.10

Power savingsWhen we tested the overall energy consumption of the two display models—outofthebox,withdefaultsettings,andwithnoaccessoriesattached—thenewDell24Monitor-P2419Hused18.25wattsperhour—22percentlesspowerthanthe23.34wattsperhourtheolderDell24Monitor-P2414Hused.

ConclusionAllbuyershavechoiceswhenselectingthedisplaysthattheemployeesacrosstheirorganizationwilluse.Aswe’veseen,selectingaDellP-SeriesdisplayoffersmanyadvantagesovertheolderDellmodelwetested.

• Whenweaskeduserstoperformacomplextaskinvolvingmultipleapplications,thenewDell24Monitor-P2419H,indual-displayconfiguration,allowedthemedianusertogetthejobdonein21percentlesstimecomparedtotheoldermodelinasingle-displayconfiguration.Across2,000employees,thistimesavingswould add up to substantial productivity gains.

• TheUSB-C-enabledDell24USB-CMonitor-P2419HCmodelstreamlinedthechoreofconnectinganddisconnecting multiple cables every time employees take their laptops somewhere else, letting users spend an averageof72percentlesstimefussingwithcablescomparedtotheolderDell24Monitor-P2414H.Across2,000employees,theproductivitygainswouldadduptothousandsofdollarsannually.

• WealsofoundthebaseofthenewDell24Monitor-P2419His15percentsmallerthantheoldermodel,whichmeansitfitsmorecomfortablyonasmallerdesktopandgivesusersextraflexibilitywhenpositioningtheir screen.

• Thenewdisplayalsoused22percentlesspower,contributingtocompany-widesavings.

These numbers give IT buyers a great deal to think about as they shop for displays.
