One of the key challenges for our information workers and people throughout our organization has to do with the wealth of information available to them with which theyre now expected to use to make the right decision, in time, to have an impact on the organization.

This information hits us throughout the day and impacts how we make decisions, steers our individual goals, our work across our teams, even impacting the overall results our company is able to achieve.

Whereas a few years back the challenge was that we didnt have the capability to get to the informationthe tools were rudimentary, there were not enough data connections, the bandwidth was not there, etc., todays challenge is that its everywhere you look, we have too much access, its in too many places, and now its hard to corral it all in time to help us in our jobs.

The challenge for organizations, teams, and individuals today is to find a way to harness the power of this information to make it work to our advantage. And thats where BI comes into play. When you use BI you get better results throughout our organization.6

The Need For Better Insight and Visibility Exists Throughout The Organization

I need to have the right demographic information so I can better target my opportunity prospecting.Sales rep

Customer support repI need better access to information to make better decisions on cross-sell and up-sell opportunities.

I need to know that the people in my organization have the right goals in place to understand and execute on the strategic initiatives of the company.I need better visibility into our pipeline performance so I can focus on deals that help me grow business with my most profitable customers.I need better visibility into my cost of operations so I can target specific cost reduction opportunities that wont have a negative impact.I need to improve our analytics capabilities so we can understand our current business performance and do a better job of planning for the future.Source: Creating the Office of Strategy Management by Robert Kaplan and David P. Norton, Harvard Business School, April 2005

Delivering business intelligence starts with our people at the center of the equation. At the end of the day, its all about how our people need to use information to make better business decisions.

Before today BI technology was developed and the people are told to adapt to the technology, our view is that the technology needs to adapt to our people. It needs to be flexible to account for the many different use cases, departments, and needs of the information in our organization.

And these needs differ all around our company. Our finance team may need information in one way and format and based on their own timelines, while sales and operations have completely different needseach team may want to see the data differently, have it refreshed at a different rate, and access different data sources from which they make their decisions.

This is a fundamental tenet for our view on how we help our customers. People Ready Business is not just a slogan for Microsoft company, its a guiding principle on how thay look at the BI technology, and how they deliver solutions that address customers most important business issues.

Microsoft makes no warranties, express or implied, in this summary.1212A successful business process management (BPM) solution enforces the necessary elements of closed-loop performance management processes that enable control, continuous feedback, and decision support, as well as information transparency strategies that standardize and increase the quality of corporate information.

A BPM strategy supported by technology moves organizations from a historically focused, manually driven reporting process to on-demand analysis and dynamic decision support.

IDC: http://mslibrary/research/MktResearch/IDC/Intranet/35063.htm

Office SharePoint helps you manage BPM through integrated monitoring, analyzing, and planning.

Office SharePoint offers reporting, scorecarding, and dashboarding to bring rapid visibility to performance against plan metrics to all users, providing a solid view of what is happening in the business.

Integrating those capabilities with analytics, lets users analyze the performance of their KPIs in context, pulling up highly relevant analytic views that help them understand performance.

Finally, integration with planning capabilities, allows organizations to drive performance across departments or across the entire organization. Hopefully reaching much more than the finance department and doing much more than year end budgeting and planning but involving other departments such as operations, manufacturing, and sales. Hopefully by integrating all these processes we can also drive out corporate alignment so that the entire organization is driving toward common objectives and able to measure efficiently how they are doing against those objectives.

Delivery through SharePoint Server:Provides an integrated application for managing performanceIs affordable to buy and deployIs flexible enough to handle complexityIs scalable enough to handle the enterprise demandsOffers access via easy-to-use Office environment, including Excel.Helps you drive business performance

MonitoringWhat is happening? What happened?Key performance indicators measure business performance at all levels of the organizationScorecards and KPIs are cascaded throughout the business to align, monitor, and drive performance

Analysis Why?Business users can easily analyze key business measures (for example, sales or profitability) by product, customer, channel, segment, or other filtersBusiness users can have the information their wayin exactly the view they need and without reliance on IT

PlanningWhat do I want to happen? What will happen?Planning based on analytical models for each business area with accurate measures of resources and resultsAssumptions and business drivers are part of the system, not offlineModel what if outcomes to determine best course, alternatives, and opportunities

Emerge Stronger!Strategic Value

How does an organization derive the most value from their business intelligence investments? Over the last decade businesses have invested in multiple applications to help drive their business operations. Over time, allowing users to get a sense of overall business health became difficult and extremely challenging. Data was stored in different applications with different structures and elements like product and customer have been defined differently in different systems.

Thats when tools that helped businesses connect to those various applications and data sources were incredibly useful. These tools allowed users to build sound data. Data that was consistent, well defined as the users understood it, and integrated to help provide a broader access to business operational data.

In addition to those data integration tools it was imperative that businesses had the ability to collect and store this cleaned information for historical analysis purposes and increasingly regulatory reason, be able to manage it effectively. As data size grew, it became important to provide subset views of the data to the users that they cared about. Integrating a couple of the operational aspects of the business and presenting it to the user so that they can slice and dice the information became increasingly critical.

Together, integrating data from multiple sources, storing and managing this data and making it available in a way users can query the data is referred to the act of building sound data.

The issue is that so many businesses focused their efforts on building Sound Data, which is complex just by its nature, they did not focus on how the users will actually use this data. Will the users be able to get to this data using tools they feel most comfortable with, anytime and anywhere? Will they be able to share the insight they derived out of this data with their immediate team or with the entire organization at large? Because if the users cant derive personal insight and have the ability to share that insight with a broader team, then the value of Sound Data is very limited.

Finally, in today's world leveraging business insight to advance in front of competition and even use business insight to generate new revenue is a desired state by many businesses. Being able to plan business outcomes, monitor and analyze events as they happen and changing the plan with agility if desired outcomes are not materializing is one way of staying ahead of competition. Empowering users to align to a plan and providing them with the ability to drive actions with full knowledge of the planned outcomes, enables the best out of employees. Leveraging collective insights and driving an aligned organization provides the most strategic value to the investments that businesses make in BI technology.13

Application Platform InfrastructureAdvance the business with IT solutions that maximize business opportunity

16The catalyst for business growth therefore, is the right application infrastructure and capabilities to manage risk, efficiencies and change while driving better levels of customer experience. We see that there are five essential functional areas or capabilities that organizations must focus on to provide the application environment that will move IT from simply an enabler to contributor of business innovation:Data management: We are seeing more and more industry demand for data management that spans beyond the data center to encompass a broad set of data types as well as the secure capture of the high volume anonymous data that sits outside the data center. The ability to access, integrate and manage disparate data sources in mixed IT environments drives greater operational efficiency. Further scalable and high transactional support provides for always on reliable business operations.

Business intelligence: Customers want a more complete view of the business to inform decision making. Our is goal help people and their organizations by providing actionable business insights to all employees so that they are able to better identify and seize opportunity while mitigating potential risk

SOA and business process: We also understand the inherent complexities of connecting systems in heterogeneous environments and aligning core business activities. Our commitment is to provide a flexible service oriented approach to help customers manage change, streamline, connect and automate business processes and interoperate with existing IT investments

Development: Delivering software initiatives that drive business value on time and at desired quality requires aligning the right roles and teams across business and IT. Our commitment is to ensure individual and team productivity by offering the right level of visibility, collaboration and control within the software development process. Real-time data capture (BI on software initiatives) and customizable lightweight process and reporting are vital for compliance, project estimation, impact analysis and repeatable success

User experience: Business growth through customer expansion and retention through to individual and organizational productivity is rooted in the experience that people have with a companys applications and services. We are committed to making it easier for IT to deliver customizable and superior user experiences that offer greater competitive differentiationAs IT competencies, these are represented through our application platform strategy spanning our underlying platform architecture .NET and WinFX run time components through to core products such as SQL Server; Biztalk Server and Visual Studio combined with Office System and Windows Server System. Our goal is to ensure a trusted adaptable foundation for modern applications.

A trusted platform is critical for a business intelligence solution to work today. If were going to achieve the promise of BI, we need to have the confidence and trust in the data, we need to know where it came from, and that it is both timely and reliable for us to use to make a decision. Thats where the power of an integrated BI platform like SQL Server comes into play.

Once you have the data ready to use, the middle tier comes into play, where business users actually interact with the data and turn it into something that is useful to them to make the right decision. The numbers that we pull from other systems are just thatwe need applications and content to turn them into actionable itemsand thats where the middle tier comes into play.

Finally, we need the right tools and applications to ensure that we can use that data in the way we want to in order to make our decisions. Applications and tools that range from personal, to team, to organizational and corporate tools, all with a familiar look and feel, all integrated and working with my operating system, email, Internet search function. And this is what the power of integration through Microsoft Office brings you. From the Office productivity tools like Excel, through to the team and collaboration tools of SharePoint. By integrating BI seamlessly into a broader business productivity suite that includes search, collaboration, unified communications, and content management, we offer the end user a much richer experience.

Point of the slide: Show that from Office Excel, to Office SharePoint we need the right tool to fit the needs of every BI user in the organization, focused on the key differentiating themes of personal, team, and corporate BI needs in the organization.

Flow of the slide: People use BI for many different tasks within their organizations. So, you need a flexible solution that delivers information to people when they need it, and in the format they need, in order for it to be used. That extends to delivering agile solutions focused on personal BI and personal productivity, as found in the Office Enterprise 2007 solutions like Excel, Visio, and other tools. But we dont only work as individualswe work in groups and teams to get our projects done. That requires a different kind of BIone that is focused on accountability throughout the team, to ensure the team is able to work in an environment that promotes collaboration and rapid sharing of information to drive to a common decision. And, Office SharePoint 2007 is being used in organizations everywhere to accomplish this task. Lastly, the work we do is ultimately aligned to the overall company goals and objectives. This is BI that everyone can get behind. The company goals and metrics, and our team and personal tasks should be aligned and integrated. You need BI that lets everyone have access to organizational goals and metrics, ensuring organizational alignment. And, with Office SharePoint Server 2007, you have an easy to use and powerful corporate BI tool that allows you to do just that.

Who? Effective Performance Management Requires Ownership Beyond IT

Effective performance management is driven by strategy, a top-down approach. An organization needs to articulate where it wants to go and how it is going to get there. From this are derived a set of key objectives and associated metrics that should be driven down the organization, establishing alignment and understanding at all levels of the business.

At the same time, information about the current and past state of the business needs to be bubbled up from the underlying operational business systems. This information is used to populate the defined metrics, allowing insight and action on the key objectives associated with the organizations strategy.

This is where performance management and BI meet. Performance management defines the structure and context, BI provides the data and tools to make this work.
