Learning Object Discovery & Exchange (IMS LODE)
• Aims at facilitating the discovery and retrieval of learning content stored in repositories by establishing practices for combining existing specifications into complete solutions that address the needs of the learning domain
LODE Main Components
• Profiles of specifications for learning object discovery:– Open Archives Initiative – Protocol for
Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH)– Simple Query Interface (SQI)– LOM context set (for CQL and PLQL)– Registry Data Model (based on ISO-2146)
• Information for Learning Object eXchange (ILOX)
Adopting Standards and Specifications for Educational Content
• 30-month Best Practice Network (Sept 08-Feb 11)
• European Commission eContentplus program• Aims at
– Developing best practice approaches to implementing standards for educational content discovery and use
– Improving the adoption of learning technology standards and specifications
– Impacting on pre-standardization activities
IMS / ASPECTMemorandum of Understanding
1. Cooperation on the dissemination and best practice in implementing Common Cartridge
2. Cooperation in developing region-specific application profiles of IMS specifications and developing conformance tests
3. Collaboration on IMS LODE
ASPECT and LODE ILOX
LRE Metadata Application Profile v4.0
• http://fire.eun.org/LREMAPv4p0.pdf• Based on IMS LODE ILOX + IEEE LOM• Enables
– Exchange of resources in multiple formats (web formats, IMS CC, SCORM)
– Support for new distribution models– Handling LO descriptions split into several
metadata instances (harvesting back of enrichments)
http://portal.aspect-project.org
LODE Registry Data Model
• Aims at simplifying the management of federation of learning object repositories
• Allows for:– Searching for learning object repositories on
the basis of their• Metadata collections• Content collections• Supported protocols
– Automatically connect to these repositories
ASPECT aims at implementing
an OpenSource LODE Registry
LODE Registry XML Binding
• Is currently tested by ASPECT (EUN + KUL) to describe the LRE and ARIADNE repositories
• Results to be reported this week to IMS LODE during the Redwood meeting
ASPECT Service Center
1. LOR Registry
2. Vocabulary Bank
3. Application Profile Registry
4. Automatic metadata language translation
5. Automatic metadata format transformation
6. Automatic content format transcoding
7. Compliance testing
8. Identifier service – handle
9. Access to known interoperability issues
http://aspect.vocman.com/
Automatic Translation
• All the LRE metadata have been translated
• Translation are limited to LRE metadata (due to SYSTRAN license limitation)
• Translations can be harvested using the OAI-PMH target of the LRE
Transformer Service
• LREv3.0 -> LREv4.0• LREv4.0 -> LOM• LREv4.0 -> sCMR
Compliance Testing
• LRE Metadata v4.0– Core– Recommended
Identity Service
Handle System
• “Persistent” identifier for Learning Objects• Stamp (quality label) trusted between LRE
members• Can be resolved
– Content providers– LRE version of the metadata– Signature verification
LRE Service Center
• All the services of the LRE service center provided by ASPECT will be publicly available soon at http://servicecenter.aspect-project.org
