Dramatic monologue

Soliloquy

The language in this poem contributes to the meaning of the poem, because the author uses rhyme and alliteration to enhance the meaning of the poem and gives detailed imagery. The use of these tools in the poem entrances the reader and makes them think.

The poem is organized in rhyme for example in the first stanza the first, second, and fourth ending words rhyme. The author also uses alliteration when he writes, “Whose woods…His house…dark and deep.”

The sound pattern of this poem create an effect of softness that adds to the imagery of the snow but it also has this undertone of darkness.

This situation seems to take place in a isolated setting, the speaker is obviously alone, with the exception of his horse, and is contemplating his surroundings and his life. This poem takes place around the winter time due to the fact that the speaker says “To watch his woods fill up with snow…Between the woods and frozen lake.”

The theme that this poem is trying to convey is that life comes and goes and you don’t have to sit and wait your turn you can continue on your way and make the most out of your life.

The speaker seems to be an older gentleman who happens to be riding by some woods late in the evening, and he stops to observe them.

The speaker seems to be talking to himself and thinking.

In this poem the speaker is riding his horse when he stops by the woods late in the evening. He sits and observes the scenery, when his horse starts to make noises that seem to be asking the speaker a question. The speaker then considers the things he has to do and continues on his way.

My initial response to this poem was that it was simple and short and was talking about a guy looking at the woods. As I began to reread it over and over I got a better understanding of it. It seems to me that the speaker is not talking about the woods but could be talking about death and how he has watched so many die but it is not yet his turn to die and he has so much to do before then.

Look around and what do I seeAll these people are falling down around me I want to just sit here and wait my turn But I hear the people in the background yelling out for mePleading for me to carry onI look into their eyes and realize I must go on I can’t stop now,For there are things I have not accomplished and places I have not yet seenSo now I know it is not my time to go.
