ARTIST BIOGRAPHY & STATEMENT
This is a fortuitous month for you! As members of this chapter you will have the great fortune of writing your art biography and artist statement. Our board members, Vicky DeLong and Blade, will be talking about the difference between an Art Biog-
raphy and Artist Statement. These are important pieces of infor-mation for you to have and create as part of your portfolio.
We would like everyone to have the desire to show in at least one colored pencil show. Perhaps you are not interested in showing or selling your work. No worries, you can come along for the ride. All members are featured in the newsletter under the “Getting to Know You” section on page 3. We do this to share
information and build community. You can use your bio here too.
Our chapter also has “Chapter Albums”. Inside you will find Art Biographies and Artist Statements from our current members.
We are here to help and working together we will create beauti-ful bios and artist statements that you can be proud of. Best of all you will be prepared for anything your future brings. Welcome to our chapter, join in, contribute. You are important to us! We will provide paper, pen and examples. PLEASE BRING your
colored pencils and supplies needed for name tag.

“San Diego County Fair and Colored Pencils”
I have had a long history with the San Diego County Fair. My family arrived in Solana Beach, in 1959, and I have been to the Fair every year since. But
there has been one constant, even at 16, I wanted to be an artist. Finally, at
about age 45, I started drawing, and soon discovered the Colored Pencil.
So not soon after, I told my husband I planned on submitting my work, my first
medium sized piece of art ever completed. It was very scary, well-known local
artists were standing in line with me. I was stunned when I was told my piece
was accepted, and it received an Honorable Mention! Over the ensuing
years, as our chapter grew, I urged fellow members to participate, and
through my persistence, we finally had a special 2-D, Drawing-Color Class-
020. I hope to see your art hanging for nearly one month, in one of the largest
Juried, Fine Art Exhibitions on the West Coast.

Virgil Pedro
Virgil Pedro was born and raised in north-ern Arizona but has spent a lot of his adult life living in both northern and southern California. In 2016 he discovered that San Diego had a Colored Pencil Society chap-ter and started attending their meetings. He is now a member of both the national Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) and the local CPSA chapter in San Diego. Virgil first became interested in art when he saw his oldest daughter working on art projects when she was an art student at a university. He started drawing in graphite and enrolled in a mail order art course. It was at this point that he discovered col-ored pencils. He just happened across a colored pencil instruc-tion booklet. Drawing in colored pencil struck a chord for Virgil. He completed all the projects in the booklet and moved on to buying other books on colored pencil techniques. In 2004, Virgil took a drawing course at a community college that was taught by a master colored pencil artist. Students in this class were encour-aged to use colored pencil for all assigned art projects. Later in 2004, Virgil attended one of Ann Kulberg's colored pencil portrait workshops. Both of these art workshops proved to be important milestones in Virgil's continued development as a colored pencil artist. Since Virgil began drawing, he has had a strong interest in sci-fi and fantasy art. In developing this interest he has taken figure drawing classes and painting classes at community colleges and studios/ateliers. He has also taken art classes on drawing and painting animals and winged creatures as well as classes in art composition. Virgil also has an interest in still life. His overall goal is to be able to work in both sci-fi fantasy art and fine art. Most recently Virgil has acquired a heated drawing board and is learn-ing how to use it with colored pencils. Virgil and his wife, Dorothy, moved to one of San Diego's beach communities several years ago. San Diego has been very positive for both of them. He has found the San Diego CPSA to be welcoming and inclusive. He has also discovered that the local art community holds many opportuni-ties for furthering his growth as an artist. Virgil and Dorothy's adult children, who live out of state, visit frequently to spend time with their parents, as well as spending time at the beach.

ARTIST BIO
Once upon a time, many years past (whew) when I entered my first show in San Diego at The Art Institute, I was asked for my art biography. If by chance a piece of my art work was sold, they would like to give my art biography to the buyer along with the piece. So my journey began. I set out to discover what was needed for this document. I looked at many other artist’s biographies. I thought about what I would want to know about an artist who's work I bought. I con-sulted other artists. I thought this is an important piece of paper. This could determine my future. I made an appointment with a resume specialist and paid for a consultation. I had a friend who was a published writer and asked for her help. The day arrived... I actually paid someone to edit and type up my most important document. Now it was official, I had an artist bi-ography about me! I read that thing over and over. I tried to re-late to it. Who was that woman? Well it was kind of me. Hon-estly, it felt cold. Did it give a true window into my life, where I came from, and how I got to art? No!! Being the very imperfect perfectionist that I am, I began again. This time I listened to myself and my heart. Most of all, I trusted myself to talk about myself on paper. I told the true story of the unique human being that I am. I did however, take advantage of all I learned on my previous bio journey. I had learned about how not to make this document more than a page long. Knowing how to simplify and not go into too much detail was important in keeping your reader engaged. Touching upon highlights of my life or turning points, was also key. My art biography may be different from everyone else and that is okay! Honestly, that is good because, I am different than anyone else and I want to share the story of me. Go ahead and look at other artist’s bios. See what you like and what resonates with you. Borrow from them, but make it your own. References are always good. By all means be sure they look smart and are well punctuated. Feel free to update and change as you grow as an artist. Finally, I did sell 2 pieces of my art at that first show, where my journey started. I have had students that said they never wanted to be in a show. As they progressed in their emergence of ex-pressing art and got more confident, guess what? They changed their mind entered a show, with no expectations and they were very happy they created an artist biography. You will be too! Be happy, Blade♥
