SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
It’s hard to believe that we are already at the fourth of July holiday weekend. There’s a lot to look forward to this time each year: corn being knee-high, fireworks, cookouts…a new preacher. I’m not going to be so bold as to suggest my preaching is better than Aunt Wilma’s six-layer dip or Uncle Wilbur’s pulled pork. I do want to be up front and tell you that I understand. I understand the priority for family and friends and sometimes those priorities take you away from church. In a perfect world we would have enough time for everything, but we don’t and we have to choose. So as you are setting your summer schedule, as your new preacher, new pastor, I wanted to share some of the sermons that are headed to Acton beginning Sunday July 5th. I have purposely constructed more “teaching” style for the summer because they are easier to get up to speed if you miss a Sunday.
July 5th: The Road to Acton, Luke 24:13-35
July 12th: August 2nd: Codebreaker: The Book of Revelation
August 9th: September 6th: Hebrews: A Journey Through the Letter
I look forward to meeting you all and walking together with Christ. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to find a pulled pork sandwich.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY MEETING – JULY 8th Sheri Lathrop is our new Children’s Ministry Leader and would like everyone currently involved in Children’s Minsitry or anyone who would like to be involved join her on July 8th at 6:30pm for a meeting to discuss ideas on taking this ministry to the next level. She is asking all Sunday School teachers, Children’s Church teachers, and other currently involved to be there.
GARAGE SALE - JULY 25th The 2014 Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, July 25th from 7:00am-3:00pm. Donations are now being accepted and can be dropped off at the church during the week from 9:00am-1:00pm and most evenings from 7-9:00pm. If items need to be picked up, please call the church office to make arrangements. A dinner will be served each evening, July 20th-24th, at 6:00pm for the workers so come work, fellowship, and share a meal…it’s a great way to get to know your church family!
KARL HINKLE – JULY 26th Come join us on July 26th as Karl Hinkle leads us in worship. This is a great close out to a busy Garage Sale event. Everyone is welcome so invite your neighbors and friends.
½ PRICE SALE – AUGUST 1st Clothing, housewares and antiques will be kept after the Garage Sale and we will reopen on Saturday, August 1st from 8:00am-12:00pm for our annual ½ Price Sale! All proceeds go to the AUMC Preschool.
LIFE CHANGES – AUGUST 2nd The Life Changes group will be meeting next on August 2nd at Southeastway Park at 6:00pm. They will have a pitch-in dinner with fried chicken, drinks and table service provided. They will be meeting and doing some comfortable walking together. For more information see Margie Townsend or Anne Meyer.
FELLOWSHIP DINNER – AUGUST 19th There will be no Fellowship Dinner in July due to the preparations for our annual Garage Sale. Please stop by and help sort and price all the wonderful donations we have been receiving. The week before the sale, July 20th-July 24th, there will be dinner served for the workers each
evening at 6:00pm. The next Wednesday night Fellowship Dinner will be August 19th.
WOMEN’S READING CIRCLE – AUGUST 23rd The Women’s Reading Circle will meet at 6:00pm on Monday, August 23rd, at The Wesley House (beside Peg Marshall’s home) to discuss The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. We will hold a pitch-in supper before the discussion. All women of the church are cordially invited to join the Women’s Reading Circle. If you haven’t read the book, it is an opportunity to learn more about the Reading Circle. This will be an opportunity for us to enjoy our new Wesley House which was built in 1926 at the site of the original Acton Methodist log church. Wesley House was a brick family home built the same year. The Language of Flowers is available from the library and bookstores. For more information please contact Peg Marshall or Anne Meyer.
Did you see Jesus one Sunday morning? God was
there too!

Joyce and I would like to thank you for the wonderful Retirement Celebration! It was a terrific day filled with great worship, music, food, and laughter. We could not have imagined
a more perfect celebration. Our thanks to all of the cooks, those who set up the room and decorated it, the creative cakes, the kind words from so many, the wonderful cards, the jackets and great gift from the church we’ll use toward a trip we are planning, a staff that is the best, the Staff Parish Committee for coordinating the event, Cliff as emcee, and the “Happy Trails” song. It has been a real joy to serve you for these past three years. You are such a special congregation, and we love you for the people of generosity and hope that you are. Grace and peace, Pastor Mac and Joyce

Hats off to Sam Warner and the many volunteers who donated their time and efforts to ensure that Bible School was a fun and meaningful event for the children. You all are such a blessing to our children and church.
THANKS FOR THE GERANIUMS Emily Smith’s Girl Scout Troop, Troop 1827, was kind enough to plant geraniums in our Bible Garden in June. Thank you girls for helping to make our garden even more hospitable.
If you have a prayer request please call the office or fill out a prayer request card during Sunday worship so that we may pray for you and your loved ones. A request for prayer can also be sent out to other members on Agapenet or added to the prayer list but we know that details of prayer requests can be private so information and updates will only be shared if requested.

KING RANCH CHICKEN (PASTOR MAC’S FAVORITE)
Cover up to 5lbs. of boneless, skinless chicken with water and add salt, pepper, cumin, onion, and Italian seasonings. Cook about 45 minutes. Remove chicken to cool and slice and save broth for sauce. Using a 9x12 casserole, layer just enough chicken to cover the pan. Layer the items in the order listed over the chicken - one cup or more each of pinto or garbanzo beans, chopped onions, Red Gold diced tomatoes drained, and cheddar cheese. Sprinkle about a tablespoon of cumin over the first layer. Mix one can of cream of mushroom and one can of cream of chicken and equal parts of chicken broth and 3 cups salsa. Blend well and pour over first layer to barely cover items. Top with broken chips. Repeat second layer as the first. You may have some chicken and sauce left over as I don’t know how to cut this down any smaller. Bake for about 45 minutes till just heated though. Serve with more chips and salsa. Good eats.

GOOD TO KNOW
TIDBITS OF AUMC NEWS SCRIPTURE FOR JULY
Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God - that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.
1 Corinthians 1:26-2:5 Guiding Questions: Are there “strength” areas in churches that are in reality to God foolishness?
What are the areas of weakness, things despised, the lowly that God has determined as important and where we, as a church, should place our vision and focus?
Be in prayer for your pastor, leaders in the church, and for each person who calls Acton UMC home, that we all might focus on the things of importance to God.
GARAGE SALE NEWS GET THE WORD OUT: Help us get the word out about our annual Garage Sale. There will be signs to put in your yard, flyers to put up at work and around town and postcards to give to friends and neighbors. Pick them up this month and help us spread the word about this community event. See Brad Repass with questions.
CAMPERS NEEDED: Volunteers are needed to stay
overnight in the church lot in a camper or tents to
deter nosy nellies and thieves from stealing things out
of the Big Tent! Please see Stephanie if you can help.
DONATIONS BEING ACCEPTED
Donations can be dropped off during the week from 9:00am-1:00pm or most evenings in July from 6-9:00pm.
Large items such as furniture, electronics, toys, and sporting goods go outside in the container.
Clothing, knick-knacks, books, and linens may be dropped off in Fellowship Hall.
Stations will be marked around Fellowship Hall, for sorting. If you can help by sorting your items it would be appreciated. If you are not able to sort them, we can do it for you.
CHILDREN’S MINISTRY UPDATE
Please pick up your children from
Children’s Church directly after worship,
or if they are staying for Sunday School, at 11:15 from
their class. Thanks!

COTTAGE MEETINGS Pastor Matthew’s ministry is traditional, creative and innovative with a Biblical foundation and a commitment to share the love and teaching of Jesus Christ.
Over the next weeks we will be organizing a series of cottage meetings in the homes of some of our members with groups of 10 to 12 to get to know Pator Matthew and Heather and share hopes, dreams and visions for the growth of our faith community at Acton United Methodist. Watch for news on the Agapenet and signup sheets.
