Africa’s great potentialwill only be realized by intensifying training and investment in our people. This is how to provide the competent and purposeful leadership so desperately needed to transform African economies from predominately resource dependent to knowledge- based, prosperous21st century economies. World-class education is the starting point.

SecuringAfrica’s future through world-class education

as a natural progression in their

commitment to Education and

giving back. It is clear that this is an

idea whose time has come. This is

why the Nigerian University of

Technology and Management

(NUTM) was born.

It is this community of sponsors and

partners that have come together to

become the driving force propelling

NUTM forward. Together, we are

combining our resources to build a

world-class institution that will unlock

the potential of Nigeria’s teeming

youth and transform the landscape

of opportunities available to our

future generations. Our challenge

will be to sustain this momentum,

institute proper governance, attract

world-class faculty, build robust

infrastructure, secure funding to

ensure sustainability and produce

top-tier graduates. It is a challenge

that we have accepted, and we look

forward to partnering with you on

this journey.

Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah

Over ten years ago, I was part of an

Aspen Fellowship with a group of

Nigerian business leaders where we

were challenged to conceive one

project that would be

transformative for Nigeria, and

Africa more broadly. One of the

most compelling ideas that came

out of that Fellowship was to build

an educational institution that

would have the kind of impact that

the Indian Institutes of Technology

(IIT) have had on India.

At the time, we did not think we

were ready to champion such an

ambitious project given our various

commitments. About two years ago,

a video went viral on the success of

IIT: its track record of producing

world-class Engineers; global

credibility; its standing that rivals

the most competitive Ivy League

schools; and its impact on India and

the world – producing graduates

who have gone on to lead global

Fortune 500 companies, and

transforming the global landscape.

This video revived the idea of

building a school similar to IIT for

Nigeria, as a number of us asked

ourselves “why not us” and “why

not now”? We aspire to build a

world-class university in Nigeria that

will provide such academic excellence

and rigour, that it will compete with

leading universities around the

world, and produce a pipeline of

leaders that will be equipped to

transform Nigeria. We envision that

this institution will play a central

role in repositioning Nigeria and

Africa for competitiveness in the

21st century. It will provide top-tier

education for our children and

unlock the many benefits that the

ecosystem of a world-class school

will produce. This University will

specialize in Science, Technology,

Engineering, Mathematics and

Management and is positioned to

be a landmark Center of Excellence

that will serve not only Nigeria, but

also Africa and beyond.

As we engaged key stakeholders

and potential partners - individual

and corporate, domestic and

international - on this exciting

project, the responses we have

received have been overwhelmingly

positive. Many see this initiative

The need for higher education

A rising young population and a drive to progress present a unique opportunity to build a world-class university in Africa, for Africa.

Africa’s economic outlook is bright.

The continent is home to five of the

world’s fastest growing economies,

with increased FDI, slowed inflation

and remittances at record levels.

Will this growth be sustained, and if

so, what impact will it have on

African societies? A major challenge

for the region is creating enough

jobs for its growing population. A

recent World Bank report estimates

that as many as 11 million young

people in Sub-Saharan Africa will be

joining the job market every year for

the next decade, and the risks

associated with growing numbers of

urban youth without meaningful

occupation are high.

There is now renewed

acknowledgement of the key role

that universities can play in

economic and social development.

Yet, despite the rapid expansion of

higher education enrolments, there

are serious concerns about the

ability of Africa’s universities to

produce the kinds of graduates who

can lead the region towards a

promising future.

Only 740 universities serving about 660 million of Africa’s1 billion people. In comparison, countries like the United States, have close to 5,300 universities and colleges serving a population of over 323 million.

The best performing university in Africa is the University of Cape Town (UCT) followed by Witwatersrand. Yet UCT is ranked 148 globally in the Times ranking, while Wits is ranked 182.Source: Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board

A growing need in NigeriaCurrently, Nigeria has over 300 combined public and private

institutions of higher education, including universities, polytechnics,

specialized technology colleges, and colleges of education. While

this seems like a sizeable number of institutions, the capacity falls far

short of demand from the education-seeking population. According

to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) statistics,

about 1.8 million students took the university entrance examination

in 2018 (and 1.6 million in 2017), but only less than 50% of students

were admitted into these institutions.

The current situation not only puts

the legacy of higher education in

Africa at risk, but also the future of

millions of graduates, who can drive

the continent towards a promising

future. It was with this recognition

that we put into motion the plan of

building a world-class institution –

the Nigerian University of

Technology and Management

(NUTM).

The growing youth of the region

deserve a future-ready institution like

NUTM that bolsters their aspirations

and equips them to become the

leaders that Africa needs. Therefore,

this is not just an endeavor in higher

education but a call to action for

transforming the region’s future.

Creating a legacy for Africa

Africa is better known for its rich natural resources than for its unique knowledge economies and thought leadership. It’s high time we changed this perception

Unique African identity – imbibe and inculcate the region’s cultural context, values, and learning, with an emphasis on solving challenges unique to Africa

A sustainable approach for success

Building a world-class institution requires continued focus on several areas

that impact the way the University is perceived by academicians, students,

industry and the society. NUTM has been envisioned as a top-ranked

institution that will deliver a lasting impact on Africa and the world.
