Spirituality of bread making to be presented at Chiara CenterChiara Center is pleased to welcome Father Dominic Garramone, OSB, who will discuss the spirituality of bread making on Friday, March 11. The event begins at 6 p.m. with dinner and the cost is $20 per person and $35 per couple. Reservations are required by calling 217-523-0901 or emailing at [email protected].

According to Sister Rosie Miller, OSF, Chiara Center Program Director, “The process of making bread, baking bread, and eating bread is a spiritual experience that we often take for granted and Father Dominic’s insight into this experience is both notable and informative.”

Father Dominic is a Benedictine monk who resides at Saint Bede Abbey in Peru, IL. He is the head of the religion department at Saint Bede Academy, teaches sacraments and comparative religions, serves as the drama director, and has published two plays. He was the host of the PBS cooking show “Breaking Bread with Father Dominic” from 1999 to 2001. He has written seven cookbooks along with Brother Jerome and the Angels in the Bakery, an award-winning children’s book. Breadhead Breakfast Treats will be published in October 2016 by Reedy Press.

Father Dominic says he got his culinary education “between my mother’s kitchen, PBS and the public library” and when not baking or teaching he can usually be found in the Abbey herb garden. For more information on Father Dominic, please visit www.breadmonk.com.

St. Anthony’s free Community Diabetes Program expands to Newton and AltamontIn July 2015, we began partnering with Catholic Charities to offer a free community program for people with diabetes. Clients can meet with a Registered Dietitian that will assist them in obtaining the necessary resources and education to manage their disease. Since that time, we also began offering the program at Family Care Associates in Effingham.

In another exciting expansion, St. Anthony’s recently began a partnership with the Jasper County Health Department, as well as the Lutheran Care Center in Altamont and Altamont Medical Center, to offer the Community Diabetes Program in their communities.

Through this free program, people can get help with healthy food options and recipes, medication costs, diabetic supplies, behavioral goal setting and laboratory exams. Clients partner with the Registered Dietitian and work towards goals to improve their health.

In all of these locations, a Registered Dietitian meets with clients on a regular basis:

• Catholic Charities – Weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays

• Family Care Associates – Weekly on Thursdays

• Jasper County Health Department – 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, starting March 22

• Lutheran Care Center in Altamont – 2nd and 4th Thursdays, starting for March 24

If you know if someone in these communities who needs assistance in managing their diabetes, please let them know about St. Anthony’s Community Diabetes Program. There are no income guidelines associated with the program. For more information, contact the Community Diabetes Program at 217-994-2737.

Healing Garden Commemorative Paver ProgramThe HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital Foundation dedicated The Healing Garden in May 2009. Located between the Prairie Heart Institute at St. Anthony’s and the Chapel, The Healing Garden offers a place of peace and comfort for patients, visitors and hospital colleagues. Please feel free to visit The Healing Garden anytime you are looking for a place of serenity and solitude.

Part of the appeal of the Healing Garden are the touching commemorative pavers placed throughout the garden, recognizing contributions given to support the healing of body, mind, and spirit of St. Anthony’s patients and families. As the hospital continues to expand and grow The Healing Garden, the Foundation is offering an opportunity to honor a loved one, or simply to support this area of sanctuary and solace for all who wish to visit it, whether they are a patient at St. Anthony’s or a community member who needs a quiet place for contemplation. Pavers are now being placed in the walkway/landscaping area across from the entrance to the Prairie Heart Institute.

For making a contribution at certain levels for the Healing Garden, the Foundation offers the following commemorative opportunities:• $100 – 4 x 8 inch paver• $250 – 8 x 8 inch paver• $500 – 12 x 12 inch paver• $2,500 – 12 x 12 inch paver (can include graphic)• $3,000 – Garden Bench

Consider making a contribution to commemorate a birth, “in memory of…”, your family or business name, an anniversary or a special celebration. The next paver order will be placed on March 22.

Visit the hospital’s web site at stanthonyshospital.org, and click “Giving” for more information and to download a paver form or contact Michael Wall, Director of Philanthropy, at 217-347-1854 or [email protected].

Our Core Values in ActionHere is a recent example of our Core Values being lived out at St. Anthony’s, where we are creating “moments that make lasting memories!” This was shared by a patient’s family member who had an exceptional experience with our ER and ICU staff. Thank you all for living out your “Promise!”

“Just wanted to send a big “THANK YOU” to the staff of St. Anthony’s Hospital ER and ICU departments… Everyone was very compassionate and professional and we truly appreciate it. Our mother… was treated with respect and kindness and we are grateful. Special shout outs to Aaron Walker (ER), Katelyn Hebron (ICU) and Drs. Kowalski and McAllaster. You made a very stressful situation bearable.”

We are St. Anthony’s and each of us makes a difference!

Did you receive a notification during the recent blizzard?Update your contact information for “Send Word Now”

On Wednesday, February 24, Mother Nature gave us an opportunity to test our new “Send Word Now” (SWN) Alerting Service and Weather Blast, to help us communicate with you during emergency and severe weather conditions about accommodations being made at the hospital for colleagues during the blizzard..

Through SWN, we can contact you, in mass during times of crisis, via your home, work, and mobile phone numbers as well as your home and work email addresses.

To ensure that you receive important communication such as this, we are asking all colleagues and physicians to review and update their contact information.• Colleagues can do so by completing the following steps:

» Log in to PeopleSoft through SAMNet. » Click Personal Information under Self Service in the Main Menu. » Click the individual categories to review, edit, and update your information. Please make sure that your mobile, home and main phone numbers are accurate, as well as your business and other email addresses.

• Physicians can update their contact information with Medkinetics by contacting our Medical Staff Office at 347-1294.

We understand the privilege we have with SWN system and have processes in place to ensure that privilege is not abused. You should only receive notifications during true, emergency situations, such as the recent weather crisis.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we strive to be better prepared to serve our communities during times of need.
