stay at home all winter? Most birds that migrate do so not because they dislike cold weather but because food is harder to find in cold weather. Seeds are available year-round, but many insects hibernate during winter. One American bird, the darcissel of the Midwest, a member of the finch family, is an eater of grasshoppers and locusts. It winters in Central and South America. In contrast, the house sparrow, another member of the finch family, is a seedeater with a short, sturdy bill that is ideally suited to cracking seeds.
