In an atmosphere of dignity and respect, Inspiration Corporation helps people who are affected by homelessness and poverty to improve their lives and increase self-sufficiency through the provision of social services, employment training and placement, and housing.

A SPECIAL NOTE ON PHOTOGRAPHY

The photographs in this report come from a three-month documentary project by photographer Elizabeth Porporato, who accompanied participants of our workforce development programs on their journey from enrollment to graduation in the late spring and early summer of 2015. Her goal was to depict the resiliency and dedication of our participants as they struggle to overcome obstacles and create a better future for themselves and their families.

The project can be viewed in its entirety on Elizabeth’s website: www.documenting-life.com.

Dear Friends,

Two-thousand fourteen was a year of contrasts at Inspiration Corporation. We began our last fiscal year with the hard news that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development had eliminated funding for projects providing supportive services (as opposed to housing) in response to the federal sequester. Inspiration Corporation lost funding for its three supportive services only projects (Foodservice Training at Inspiration Kitchens - Uptown, Employment Services and Supportive Services), totaling $506,000 or 10% of our operating budget.

The cuts impacted our ability to provide services to individuals seeking a pathway out of homelessness and poverty, as we were forced to make reductions to staff and programming.

In spite of these reductions, Inspiration Corporation remains energized by the vitality and continued increase in restaurant and catering sales at our Inspiration Kitchens – Garfield Park social enterprise restaurant. We aim to capitalize on this energy and, with the generous support of a core group of supporters, hired a catering sales manager in December 2014 to focus on increasing catering revenue. This increase will allow us to restore the number of enrollments in our Foodservice Training program over time, providing more opportunities to jobless Chicagoans to gain the skills and experience they need to succeed.

Later in the year we were approached by Beacon Therapeutic, a sister agency looking for a subcontractor to provide employment preparation training to individuals living in public housing in ten communities on the far south and southwest sides. During our fiscal year 2015 Inspiration Corporation brought our Employment Services program to 400 of these underserved individuals and families to help them move up a career ladder toward self-sufficient wages and economic independence.

While we face many of the same pressures on public funding confronting so many of our peer agencies in the human services sector, we continue to be inspired by the resilience and strength of the people that we serve and remain committed to helping them build a brighter, better future.

Thank you,

A MESSAGE FROM INSPIRATION CORPORATION
