In its first edition, the International Conference on Internet of Things and Machine Learning (IML 2017) is held between the 17th and the 18th of October 2017 in the city of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. This conference is intended to be an exciting, stimulating, and essential forum for the exchange and advancement of ideas in Internet of Things and Machine Learning. The establishment of this conference has brought about an ever widening scope of cross-disciplinary participation, bringing Internet of Things developers and Machine Learning researchers, from all fields, into a common research area. IML 2017 is organised by CentraleSupélec, Université Paris-Saclay and sponsored by Liverpool John Moores University in collaboration with a number of national and international partners. All accepted papers (regular, short, and poster) will be published by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) – International Conference Proceedings Series (ICPS) and will be available in the ACM Digital Library with the ISBN: 978-1-4503-5243-7. Through its technical program, the IML 2017 conference is established as a forum for the development, analysis, and future guidance on the burgeoning number of Internet of Things and Machine Learning projects and applications.

IML 2017 is furthering the ideas of Internet of Things and Machine Learning development. Currently, there is a great interest in the fields of Internet of Things and Machine Learning, resulting in a wide array of research being conducted in order to transfer services and facilities into state-of-the-art electronic and information technologies. This first year’s conference presents a multitude of topics aimed at addressing current research issues and trends in the design, engineering, and adoption of Internet of Things and Machine Learning. The IML 2017 conference outlines many research tracks, which are: Internet of things, Data analysis and Machine learning, Smart cities, Sensors, and Information security, Signal and Image processing, Statistical methods and Big data, SVM, Neural and Fuzzy approaches.

We also welcome two keynote speakers, covering a range of relevant, innovative topics that promise to be exciting and thoroughly engaging.

The standard and breadth of this first year’s accepted papers is exceptional, validating the importance of the continual availability of the IML Conference as a major event and forum for the promotion and discussion of the Internet of Things and Machine Learning development. Presentations will be delivered by delegates from a vast number of universities and countries. We would like to thank the speakers and session chairs for their time and effort, and the authors for their contribution to an excellent programme. We hope that you enjoy IML 2017 and have a great time in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

Finally, we would like to thank the Local Organising Committee and the Technical Programme Committee for all their hard work in helping to make this event a success.

Smart Cities Need Smart Citizens: An Internet of Things Approach to Support Cyberphysical Learning of Digital Smart

Citizens

Dr. Yacine Atif

Associate Professor

University of Skövde, Sweden

Yacine Atif is an Associate Professor at Skövde University in Sweden since January 2016. He received a PhD degree in Computer Science from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 1996. After graduation, he worked at Purdue University in USA as a Post-Doc and then joined a faculty position at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. Since 1999 he was affiliated with UAE University as a faculty, then Program Chair of Enterprise Systems at the College of Information Technology. Over the last decade, he led several initiatives that are designed to create a rich learning environment to help promote the transformation of education through the innovative use of Web technologies. He introduced the concept of “learning patterns”, bringing together ideas of educational design and architectural abstractions used in software engineering. Lately, his focus shifted towards the evolution of smart cities induced by the emergence of Internet of Things technologies. This evolution calls for new “cyberphysical learning” models in urban informatics environments, which instill new competences for the development of future digital smart citizens.

Abstract: The concept of Smart Cities is an emerging social and technology innovation, attracting large public and private investments at a global scale, arguing for the effective exploitation of digital technologies to drive sustainable innovation and well-being for citizens. However, these investments in infrastructure have yet to be systematically complemented with efforts to prepare the human capital of such cities in terms of core competences needed for driving financial and societal sustainability. Therefore, currently, there is limited understanding on which approaches to use for cultivating such Digital Smart Citizenship competences, that are essential to holistically introduce Smart Cities in the fabric of society. In this context, this keynote introduces

Cyberphysical learning as a generic overarching model to cultivate Digital Smart Citizenship competences, capitalizing and extending on an overview of existing case studies and approaches for developing such competences. The proposed approach exploits the potential of Internet of Things technologies and induced data streams to create authentic education experiences, where learning meets daily life in smart cities context. Proof-of-concept case studies of the proposed cyberphysical learning approach will be presented, to illustrate the transformation of energy management brought by IoT in the context of connected-households. Finally, the keynote reports on the findings of user surveys for eliciting their attitudes to engage with cyberphysical learning environments as a lever to enhance their digital smart citizenship competences.

Information Retrieval: Analysing Models and Experiments

Bich-Liên Doan Associate Professor, Deputy Dean of Research

CentraleSupélec, Université Paris-Saclay, France

Dr. Bich-Liên DOAN received her PhD in Computer Science in 2000. Since 2001, she has been a teacher and researcher in Computer Science at CentraleSupélec, in Gif-sur-Yvette, France. Since 2008, she is Deputy Dean of Research at CentraleSupélec. Her main interest domain is information retrieval, particularly the structural and link analysis. Her current research is related to contextual and more particularly personalized information retrieval. She is interested in new models from semiotics and quantum mechanics that can help in representing information. She co-organized in 2005 and 2007 the context-based information retrieval workshop held in conjunction with the international “Context” conference. She co-organized in 2008, 2009, and 2010 the Contextual Information Access, Seeking and Retrieval Evaluation (CIRSE) Workshop in conjunction with the European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR). She has authored forty papers.

Abstract: The long history of Information Retrieval started in the late 1950s and is growing continuously with the increase in processor speed and storage capacity. Online news websites are becoming one of the most popular and influential social media platforms allowing people to easily access information about daily life topics, share their opinions on different issues, and give feedback on published content. Published news requires effective recommendation techniques that help users to find interesting news articles that match with their interests. We investigated a diversification model in order to exploit the user-generated-content and extract valuable information about the domains of interest of users, their political orientation, and their preferences. We are exploring new theoretical models using non classical vector spaces, such as quantum models, in order to capture the uncertain and probabilistic features behind the intention and the non-explicit semantics of text.
