ContentsTABLE OF

Megan Rowland is an abstract expressionist painter born in Buffalo, NY in 1975.

A childhood visit to the Albright Knox Museum in Buffalo first ignited Megan’s love of art. Exhilarated and awed by Lucas Samaras’ Mirror Room installation (1966) and the abstract paintings of Clyfford Still, Megan immediately realized that art has no boundaries or definitions, just pure and uninhibited freedom.

After receiving her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1998, Megan began work in the costume department at the Baltimore Opera Company where her immersion into the world of live performance art further nurtured her love for painting. Over the subsequent years, Megan’s work began to incorporate many fabrics, patterns, and stitching, not unlike those of costume making in it’s most basic form.

Megan’s most recent works combine mixed medium materials with overlaying colors which create new landscapes of shape, movement, and emotion. Her work has been shown nationally in group exhibitions such as Gallery 464 “City of the Night” Festival 2014 in Buffalo NY, the Gasparilla Art Festival 2012 in Tampa FL (selected as Emerging Artist), Altered Esthetics Gallery “Art Reincarnated” 2007 in Minneapolis MN, and the American Juried Art Salon Fall Show 2006.

Megan currently lives and works in Tampa, Florida.

The Beaux Arts BallThe Beaux Arts Ball was instituted in 1953 as a major fund-raising event, and holds the distinction of being the oldest costume ball in South Florida. Themes vary widely, from “Noah’s Ark”, to “James Bond”, to “Oceans Away” and the creativity of costumes makes each year a unique experience.

Children’s PavilionBuilt in 1953 with support from Beaux Arts, the Children’s Pavilion at the Lowe is the site of children’s art classes and camps, held primarily during school breaks in the winter, spring, and summer. It is designed to encourage children, ages 5-12, to explore their own creativity. Beaux Arts continues to expand the year-round class offerings, the proceeds of which benefit the Lowe.

DonateD WoRks of aRtIn April of 1965, Beaux Arts launched the Virgil Baker American Art Collection for the Lowe Art Museum with a $5,000 contribution. The funds were used to purchase three paintings that marked the beginning of the first major collection of American Art in the Southeastern United States. Since that time, Beaux Arts has purchased and donated over 50 pieces of art to the Lowe Art Museum adding to the Lowe’s collections. These works include a bronze sculpture, “A Study of New Horizons” by Zorach in 1970, a 17th Century Flemish oil painting entitled “Portrait of a Lady With Her Three Children” by Thomas Willeboirts in 1985, a rare Seminole beaded shoulder bag in 1988, the Mimbre’s Bowls in 1990, and a 4-part costume ensemble by Beau Dick to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Beaux Arts in 2002.

the Whole PictuReToday, the 125 Beaux Arts volunteers and 300+ Beaux Arts Associate members work together throughout the year to execute events and to make a difference in the community through many special programs.

During the past 67 years, Beaux Arts has raised over $6 million dollars, which places the organization in the highest donor category for the University of Miami, The Gables Society. In recognition of Beaux Arts’ $250,000 pledge to the Lowe 2000 Capital Campaign, the Beaux Arts Gallery was dedicated to coincide with the opening of the newly renovated Lowe Art Museum in December of 1996. In 2011, Beaux Arts was honored by the University of Miami Alumni Association with the White Award. This award recognizes an affiliate group that has made significant contributions to the University. Beaux Arts gave $182,000 over 5 years to contribute to the Momentum II Campaign.

In 2014, Beaux Arts made a donation in the amount of $1.5 million to the University of Miami. This gift allowed for the creation of the endowed position Beaux Arts’ Director of the Lowe Art Museum. The endowment, which was the result of hard work from members, past and present, lives in perpetuity and will support increased programming, community outreach, facility upgrades and other projects at the Lowe.

hoW it all staRteDBeaux Arts was started in 1952 by fifty founding members under the direction of Anne Atkinson, then Assistant Director of the newly built Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery. The purpose of the group was to provide improvements, equipment and financial assistance to the Lowe Gallery, renamed Lowe Art Museum in 1968.

ouR funDRaiseRs anD PRogRaMs The Festival of Art

In 1952, the first Beaux Arts Festival of Art, originally called the “Clothesline Sale,” was held. This festival gave young artists a chance to meet the buying public. The Festival of Art became an annual project and is now a juried show with over 200 participating artists in 10 different mediums on the grounds of the University of Miami. It is recognized as one of the leading art shows in the country and attracts acclaimed artists from all over the world.

Student Artist ShowcaseIn 2002 Beaux Arts added the Student Artist Showcase (SAS) to the Festival of Art event weekend. Middle school and high school aged students from both public and private schools enter their works of art to a juried art contest. Over 350 art pieces are judged. The finalists’ and winners’ works of art are exhibited at the Lowe Art Museum during the Festival of Art weekend and a reception is held in their honor. Cash prizes are awarded to winners in five art categories. One student is honored with the prestigious Best in Show award.

HandsOn! – A Children’s Celebration in ArtIn 1987, Beaux Arts introduced a new outreach project, “HandsOn! – A Children’s Celebration in Art.” Today the program brings underserved kids from all over Miami-Dade County to the museum for a day of fun and learning. The program enables students from Title 1 elementary schools to visit the museum free of charge and with paid transportation, learn about specific exhibits and participate in art projects. In 2013, Beaux Arts doubled the size of this program and hosted over 700 elementary school children. In 2014, Beaux Arts reached outside of the museum setting and brought this art appreciation program to children residing at the Chapman Partnership Homeless Shelter.

COMMITTEE

WelcoMe to the 67th annual festival of aRt! Over the last 67 years, we have had the privilege of hosting the Festival of Art on the University of Miami campus. This year we have the opportunity to highlight yet another beautiful part of the campus in an area that holds special significance to Beaux Arts. The Foote Green is named after longstanding President Edward “Tad” Foote, II. Our associate member Carrie Causey Foote is the daughter in law of President Foote and married to his son Thad Foote, who is well known to Beaux Arts from his many years of delighting festival patrons with his acoustic performances under the festival entertainment tent. In a sense, it feels like the festival has come full circle and found its “home.” We look forward to the 67th festival and the significance of its location.

The Beaux Art Festival of Art is considered one of the premier volunteer organized and operated art festivals in the United States. The countless volunteer hours that the members of Beaux Arts dedicate to this event is extraordinary. This year’s fantastic co-chairs Elizabeth Green & Cecilia Slesnick, have worked hand and hand with more than 60 women who make up the Festival of Art committee. Additionally the entire membership of Beaux Arts including many Associate members work countless hours before, during and after this weekend to ensure the Festival of Art runs smoothly for all.

The funds raised this weekend benefit the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami, under the direction of Dr. Jill Deupi. The proceeds of this weekend also fund important Beaux Arts projects such as HandsOn!, our flagship program which brings over 1000 underserved children from schools in Miami Dade-County to the Lowe Art Museum for a day of touring, lunch and an art project they can create and take home. This year HandsOn! is chaired by Heidi Gruber & Amy Hays. The proceeds of this weekend also fund our year round Children’s Pavilion activities and camp. Thank you ladies for your dedication to youth in arts in South Florida this 2017-2018 season.

Beaux Arts would like to thank the countless sponsors who heavily support the Student Artist Showcase prizes and Festival awards including our very own Beaux Arts members and associates - over 300 strong!

Enjoy the weekend, buy some fabulous new art, enjoy the food and entertainment, stop by the Lowe Art Museum to see the Student Artist Showcase!

Welcome to the 67th annual beaux arts festival of art! We are pleased and honored that you have joined us on the grounds of the University of Miami this weekend for what we believe will be our best festival yet. This has been a year of change for the campus, and in turn we have carefully deliberated over related changes to the Festival. It has truly been a labor of love for all of us, as we have worked hard to improve upon the old, while bringing in new elements to make the Festival the best that it can be.

The first Beaux Arts Festival of Art, originally called the Clothesline Sale, was held in the spring of 1952. Since its inception, and through the sustained efforts of Beaux Arts volunteers, the Festival has evolved into an annual juried event that showcases the work of over 200 artists in the categories of 3D sculpture, ceramics, glass, graphics and drawing, jewelry, mixed media, oil and acrylic, photography, watercolor and wood. The Festival is organized and operated by volunteer members of the Beaux Arts Committee, which provides support to the Lowe Art Museum by contributing to the museum’s ongoing operations and by enhancing its educational programming and outreach.

The Lowe Art Museum not only houses an impressive permanent collection, but also is the site of the 17th Annual Student Artist Showcase. Initially added as a Festival of Art event in 2002, the Showcase features art from local middle and high school students and is a testament to the quality of the work created by young artists and Beaux Arts commitment to the arts within our community. We urge you to visit this special exhibition so that we all can support these young and emerging artists. We would also encourage you to become a member of the Lowe. It is imperative that we support this institution beyond the Festival and throughout the year.

Whether you are a seasoned attendee or a first year visitor to the Festival of Art, we hope you enjoy the food, entertainment, activities, and above all, the ART! If you see something that you love, we hope that you buy it! Your support of the artists through an art purchase helps them continue their work and have a successful festival weekend. A successful festival ensures that we will draw the artists back year after year and remain a competitive and attractive festival within the fine arts community.

It has been a privilege to co-chair this signature event. We would like thank our distinguished Ruby Sponsor, Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables and Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay, and the Dr. Brandt

Foundation. We would also like to thank the artists, vendors and entertainers whose participation makes this event possible, all the Beaux Arts volunteers who donated their time, talents and

generously underwrote the prizes for the Festival of Art and Student Artist Showcase, to high school volunteers, program advertisers, sponsors, community partners, and especially

you, the public, whose presence allows us to see our efforts come to life. We would not be here without all of you.

RaineR lageMannBorn in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1959, Rainer Lagemann began his career as an artist in the fall of 2005, when an exploratory foray into welding quickly became an obsession and he set out to portray the human body as a modern interpretation of the classic art of sculpture. His sculptures capture the human body in motion, in a freeze frame of classic, timeless gestures and emotions and the recycled stainless steel squares used to sculpt the figures, coupled with the hollow framework of the forms, represent the intellectual ability, emotional range, physical strength and spiritual dimension of each individual.

Rainer has worked closely with private collectors, curators and public institutions on commissioned work spurred by the belief that art adds value to spaces and allows him to contribute to the individuals, cities and institutions that support arts and culture. His sculptures have been exhibited globally at prestigious galleries, art fairs, institutions, museums, hotels and even churches. www.rainerlagemann.com

sofia lacayo ReMyBorn in New York, Sofia spent her early childhood in Nicaragua before moving with her family to Miami when she was six. In 1995, she graduated from Duke University with a degree in Art History. Later that year, Sofia moved to New York and joined Mary-Anne Martin/Fine Art, the pre-eminent gallery in the field of Latin American Art. For 6 years, she directed the gallery where she ran the day to day operations including the coordination of art exhibitions and art fairs. Additionally, she focused on consulting with new collectors building important Latin American collections as well assisting established clientele with selling works and receiving consignments.

In 2001, Sofia returned to Miami, Florida to become their regional associate. With Mary-Anne Martin/Fine Art, she continues to work with collectors of Latin American art and to develop new business in the South Florida area. Additionally, her arrival in Miami coincided with the inception of Art Basel Miami Beach. Because of her experience with art fairs and her knowledge of Latin American art and its clientele, she was hired by Art Basel Miami Beach as a VIP relations consultant and remained as part of the Miami based team for over 10 years.

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year and welcome to the 67th Beaux Arts Festival of Art!

I spend a great deal of time thinking about the role of art museums in our world today, including their function and purpose. Increasingly, I am convinced that institutions like the Lowe have never been more important in terms of what we “bring to the table.” Beyond serving a plurality of audiences as an invaluable resource for education, engagement, enrichment, and enjoyment through art and culture, we are the new town square; a place for civic engagement and civil dialogue. We provide people with the tools for exploring and understanding cultures different from their own and, by extension, foster dialogue and mutual respect. We equally steward a multitude memories, both individual and collective, reminding contemporary visitors that art is one of the most intimate forms of expression and, ultimately, what makes us human.

It is against that backdrop that I would like to recognize Beaux Arts, which has been our steadfast partner for more than six decades. Together we have ensured that the Lowe not only remains an irreplaceable community asset but also maximizes art’s potential to touch--and sometimes even change--lives. Beaux Arts has also supported our efforts to move beyond the bricks and mortar of the museum itself so as to broaden our reach in effecting positive change in our region. The Festival of Art is precisely such an initiative. Since 1952, the Festival has been bringing people together through the arts by promoting engagement and entertainment; families, friends, and fun; living and learning. This edition is no exception: with more than 230 juried art professionals displaying their works, the 2018 Festival offers something for everyone!

Each year, the panel of judges chooses a student to receive the award for Best in Show. This prestigious award honors the student artwork that the judges feel is the most outstanding from those pieces submitted. The Linda Pallot Award is named in memory of Linda Pallot, a favorite Beaux Arts artist and friend. Linda worked with oils and a palette knife; and her paintings were Impressionistic in nature. Linda painted beach scenes and portraits. Her art always reflected the light within her personality, as well as the hues of nature she captured. The Linda Pallot Award celebrates the special light and talent of one deserving student artist each year.

The Student Artist Showcase, originally established in 2002, provides middle and high school students in grades 6th through 12th from across Miami-Dade County a chance to participate in a juried art competition and to present their work to the community in a museum setting. Finalists receive a certificate of participation as well as have an opportunity to win cash prizes in the categories of Painting, Graphics, Digital Art, Mixed Media and Photography. The main goal of this special event is to encourage young artists and support educational development in the community.

Jurying for the 17th Annual Student Artist Showcase took place on December 5th, 2017 where six judges had the difficult task of reviewing over 350 digital submissions of artwork. The judges reconvened on December 6th, 2017 to select the award winners from all the artwork that was juried into the Showcase. On January 9th, 2017, the Student Artist Showcase opened with a reception at the Lowe Art Museum that was attended by the award winners, their families, teachers and friends.

The Student Artist Showcase has become a signature event of the Festival of Art as well as a beloved Beaux Arts tradition.
