As Warden of St John’s College and aprofessor in the Department of ComputerScience, Janet Hoskins says that herdonations have been put to work in areaswhere there was a recognized need.

Together with her husband [Bill Hoskins],who is also a faculty member and a fellow ofSt John’s College, she has recently endoweda College scholarship specifically for astudent coming out of University 1 with thehighest mark in calculus.

“This was a scholarship area we weremissing in the College,” said Hoskins. “Ashead of the College, I felt it was importantfor us to do this.” In establishing the award, she says she feels a sense of satisfaction ininvesting in a bright, young student.

“Because the College is smaller, you get toknow the students individually. There’s achance I’ll actually see it being put to use,”she said.

Hoskins says that she and her husbandbegan giving to the university eight yearsago after her father passed away. To honourhis memory, the couple endowed the W.K.

ZiprickScholarship foraccountingstudents in theFaculty ofManagement. They chose thisarea becauseher father hadbeen theprovincialauditor until his retirement.

“It has been a rewarding experience,” shesaid. “Almost every year I get a very niceletter from the student who has benefitedfrom the scholarship.”

In her work at St John’s College, she saysshe understands the important role thatdonations play.

“Private donations enhance the quality oflife for the College and students,” she said.“Without donations, many projects wouldnot otherwise have been possible. If youbelieve in the University, donating is atangible way of expressing that.”

Sean Crawford, manager of the AnnualGiving Program encourages people todesignate their gifts to areas they believe in.He says that many people, like the Hoskins, feel a sense of pride and satisfaction when agift adds a personal touch.

“In the spring of 1955, Ed Schreyer and Iwere having a water fight and I wassuccessful in hitting him with a fairly largewater bomb as he was walking into theCollege off Broadway Avenue. Ed wanted toget revenge so he thought he could time awater bomb because he guessed when Iwould be walking out the front door.Unfortunately for Ed, Archbishop Barfootand Canon Wilmot were walking out thefront door, and a very large water bombintended for me landed on them. EdSchreyer ran out the back door all the wayhome and did not return for several days. Ido not think that either Archbishop Barfootor Canon Wilmot ever found out who threwthe water bomb.”

- J. Douglas Crane

“[My] Roommate Brian had once againincurred the displeasure of his peers for his“Socratic arrogance”. It was suggested Ieven the score by catching him “one nightsoon” with a well-aimed “water bomb” fromthe third floor window to the main entrancebelow. I accepted the peer group’sassignment. This I did with alacrity becauseit was a challenge of basic trajectory, trigonometry plus opportunity. Accordinglyone evening, with the help of three otherstudents (2 theology, 1 liberal arts) [we madeplans] to relay the information and signalsas to precisely when our victim was exitingthe building and would appear on the mainsteps below. The signal was relayed, therequisite timing delay was counted downand the 2-quart water bomb released on theexpertly lobbed trajectory. The restrained, very civilized but loud expletive thatfollowed still makes me cringe – some 46years later.

We had been on target all right but thetiming was off. As a result, we hadsucceeded in flushing 2 quarts of cold waterdown the shoulders, neck and back ofsomeone other than the intended Brian. Butof whom? It happened to be the Archbishopof Rupert's Land (and Primate of all Canada)accompanied by the Warden of the College.

Brian – he, not surprisingly really, hadstopped at the exit to chat with yet anotheracademic victim of his Socratic method –probably on the subject oftransubstantiation. But why would he care?He was serenely oblivious to all of theforegoing. As for me – the ordeal (by water?)was just beginning.”

- The Rt Hon Edward Schreyer

The purpose of Leave a Legacy is to informthe public about how to leave somethingfrom their estate to a charity, throughtheir will, or an insurance policy or anannuity. There are also more immediateways such as the donation of stocks(which two SJC donors did last year) andcharitable remainder trusts. If you areinterested in more information on any ofthese, please contact me.

The result of that mailing was that anadditional two people called to tell usthey have already made plans to leavesomething to St John’s College in theirwills and a third person called to exploresome possibilities. Another wrote to saythat they did not wish to support us inthat way, and instead enclosed a chequefor $10,000 and a pledge for $40,000 moreover the next four years! (That made myday, week and month!)

LUMNI NEWSA‘43 Alberta (Farler) Marshall emailed fromTucson. She was pleased to find Marion(Petrie) Herring ‘42 in New Zealand onceagain. “We have corresponded for manyyears. Also, I had a visit with her in her ownhome about 15 years ago. Even when I wasnot receiving replies to my letters, Icontinued to write... I sent her quite a longdetailed letter once I learned of herwhereabouts…I enjoy receiving (St John’s)communications. Bernice (Gostick) Ellor ‘43and I keep in touch quite frequently, andhave had a few visits on my infrequent tripsback to Winnipeg. Keep up the good work.”

‘48 Revd Henry Riegel of Des Moines,Iowa, sent a copy of his book The GrandUnveiling: An Interpretation of the Book ofRevelation. He is retired after 55 years ofministry. “I am grateful for the professors Ihad at St John’s and the help they were tome in the years 1946-48.”

1950’s Cam Fairfield emailed fromVictoria: “I was a Johnian in 1956-57 and ’57-‘58, and I would like to let you know that I

thoroughly enjoy reading In Lumine fromcover to cover...each issue I find informationabout classmates and Winnipegacquaintances which call to memory somefact or anecdote that I may otherwise neverhave remembered. Although I didn’tgraduate, one accomplishment of mine shallalways shine brightly in my recollections. Istudied (‘suffered’ would be more accurate)English Rep. Lit. Works 4201 under ProfHoule, and one assignment was to submit abook report on ‘Gulliver’s Travels’. ProfHoule gave me an “A-” for my effort -apparently the only “A” grade he everawarded in English Lit. during his entiretenure at St John’s. Since most of my fellowstudents in that class were erudite literaryscholars, it remains one of the proudestacademic achievements in my otherwiseunspectacular scholastic history, and I knowfor an unassailable fact that the only personmore surprised than I was Prof Houle....heactually smiled when he handed me mypaper, which I believe may have beenanother ‘first’. If it is at all possible, I wouldlike to get copies of the yearbooks for thetwo years I attended St John’s. Can youhelp? (Ed.note: Anyone able to help? Pleasesend your yearbooks to the College and we’llforward to Cam.) I extend my best regardsand accolades to you and the staff for anextremely interesting and informativepublication.”

‘52 We found David Lewinski of NewJersey. Well, he was never lost. According toalumni lists, he did his BSc Hons in ‘52 andthen his MSc in ‘56. Anyway, Derek met hiswife Nora while she was in Winnipeg. She isthe sister of Ken Sarson (whom we also‘found’) who attended the College for abouta year around 1947. Ken’s wife is Barbara, whose mother Mary (McNair) Bowenattended the College for a year at thebeginning of WWI. This all started withBarbara calling to offer us a wonderfulpicture of the 1911-12 SJC Hockey team,

‘72 The Revd Dr Bill Prentice emailed: “Iregularly read In Lumine for news of thecollege and folks who I may haveencountered over my years around there(1968-73). After nine years in the Diocese ofMoosonee I moved to Ottawa in 1997 to betheir Director of Programme. This positioninvolves being the “manager” for the “softservices” of the Diocese — social services, education, justice, resources, diocesan youthministries, etc. What I didn’t know was thatthe Parish and Diocesan Services Networkin the Diocese of Ottawa is a largeroperation than the last two Dioceses inwhich I worked (Moosonee and W. Nfld)put together. . . It does keep me busy. I oftenthink back to my days at St John’s and recallendless hours in the cafe, games of Hearts, etc, in the common room, and someclasses…”

N MEMORIAM I1940’s Helen Armitage, age 90, died June 10 in Toronto. Bishop Terry Finlay of Torontopointed out that she had taught him in Kindergarten at the College School.

‘53 Lionel Green died May 6 in Winnipeg after a lengthy illness, including a stroke whilebattling cancer. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, he graduated from St John’s (and United) in ‘53,working at various jobs to support himself. He graduated from Law school in ‘59 andpracticed for 30 years, retiring in ‘90. The family asked that donations be made in hismemory to St John’s College. Pat Lee ‘53, who was Lionel’s roommate on Broadway, gavethe blessing at the end of the funeral service and offered the following tribute:

Lionel Green was determined to studyLaw, with emphasis on the word study. Toread a book was an exciting adventure forLionel. I shared a small room with him inresidence and my strongest memory ofLionel during that time was seeing himsitting at his desk deeply engrossed in abook, while listening to CKSB (St Boniface)in order to immerse himself in the Frenchlanguage. This scene would suddenly beshattered by Lionel excitedly sharingsomething from his book – some bit oflearning he could not contain…

Lionel reached his goal. Although he was adiligent student he was sometimes defeatedby the pressure of exams. He wasdisappointed by those who found it difficultto give a black man from Jamaica an ❞

opportunity to article or to practice theprofession which was his life. But hepersisted and was called to the Bar andenjoyed many years of distinguishedpractice in Winnipeg.

At his funeral earlier this year, his wife,Elizabeth, and his children andgrandchildren, gathered with manyfriends, to give thanks for the gift thatLionel had been to all of us. As I listenedto his children speak of his love for booksand the wonder of the written word, Icould hear him again inviting his youngroom mate to share the thrill of discovery.Lionel never forgot St John’s. At thereception following the funeral there wasan open 1953 Johnian with his graduationpicture – beside mine!
