A Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, Dr. Luks designed several root canal instruments and served as Clinical Associate Professor in Endodontics at NYU. Dental Needs Addressed at Health Hearing In the Spring of 1987, Dr. Larry Meskin, dean of the University of Colorado Dental School, represented dentistry at a House Ways and Means health subcommittee hearing on legislation to provide catastrophic illness benefits. Dr. Meskin testified on the dental health needs of the elderly and the re- lationship of these needs to catas- trophic illness. Dr. Meskin, using data from the recent National Institute of Dental Research survey on adult oral health, told Congress that older Americans have not yet shared in re- cent dental health gains made by younger age groups. He also testified that comprehensive dental treatment is necessary for the well-being of medi- cally compromised patients who would qualify for catastrophic illness benefits under several bills then being con- sidered by Congress. Dr. Meskin recommended that the subcommittee include coverage of dental expenses in a catastrophic protection plan at a cost of 25r a month, or $3 a year, for Medi- care beneficiaries. An estimated 437,000 persons qualifying for catas- trophic benefits and using covered dental services would have 100 per- cent coverage for prophylaxis, x-rays, simple restorations, full and partial dentures, surgical preparat:on of ridges, periodontics, and endodontics. 368
