In Memoriam
December brought our Mill Creek community tremendous grief with the loss of
two amazing women, both charter members of the MCHS faculty, Gigi Murphy and Ashley Taube. We mourn their loss but derive strength from the tremendous impact each made here at Mill Creek High School.
Gigi Murphy worked as a full time counselor in GCPS for thirty years, retired, but then returned part time to continue her passion of making a difference in the lives of young people. She was part of the Mill Creek coun-seling department when our doors opened in 2004 and is responsible for the creation of our iLead student men-tor program. She was counselor of the year for 1992-1993 and regional counselor of the year in 1993. Gigi was a calming spirit who had the ability to instantly put people at ease, a trait that helped make her such a well loved counselor and member of our Mill Creek family.
Ashley Taube started her teaching career in 2004 with the opening of Mill Creek. She made a tremendous impact on so many students both as a math teacher and a cheer coach. She made it her mission to make math less intimidating and to be an uplifting influence to every student she taught and coached. Ashley was named GCCA coach of the year and led our competition cheer squad to four state titles in the last eleven seasons, winning
the most recent in 2018. She fought a long, courageous battle against cancer but through it all she maintained a positive outlook and always demonstrated her mantra to “choose happy.”
We honor the memory of these beloved members of our Mill Creek family
by using what we learned from each of them to continue making a positive
impact in the lives of our students.

Class of 2019 News
A message from senior sponsor Jody Gross:
Senior Parent meeting January 17th at 7:00pm in the theater.
Topics to be discussed: Graduation, Important dates, Volunteering, & Senior Activities.
Paying Senior Dues: Use the following link: https://shop.gabalfour.com/categories/packages This link will take you to the Balfour website where you pay your "Cap and Gown Dues." Please
note it is not on My Payments Plus Dues will increase on February1st to $140. Check out the
school website under senior news to see all the items that the dues cover. Also, Senior Dues have nothing to do with Junior Dues or Prom. I need your help to make senior week fabulous for your seniors. We ask that each parent send in a bag of individually wrapped candy and a $5 gift card (from fast food, QT, Department stores, etc.). We start collecting at this time, so by April we will have enough for every senior. During senior week, each senior will receive a goody bag full of candy and treats. If we get enough gift cards for every senior, then I will hand those out each day after school. Seniors love it! They are really surprised when they draw out a gift card. Let's keep this tradition going and send in your items today. Please put your items inside a bag with a slip of paper stating your name and your seniors' name. If we do not get enough gift cards, then senior names will be drawn as winners.

The 10th-grade Engineers are starting back strong with genetic engineering, the perfect opportunity to get cross-curricular! Students used their engineering skills to help us make a scale model of the
human genome while learning about the human genome project. This revolutionary scientific discovery has allowed scientists to determine the locations of all the genes on the genome. Students first had to
determine where on the human genome their assigned gene was, then they placed those genes on the EPIC hallway to make a walkable human genome. This allowed them to then go on a gene scavenger hunt to discover the locations of specific genes. We are really diving into this unit with a bunch of hands-on activities and simulations. I look forward to seeing how Mr. Moore wraps it all up with a class discussion about all the different topics of genetic technology.

EPIC Update
The 11th grade EPIC students opened up the semester in all of their classes by thinking about the con-cept of energy. As an introduction to this idea in Physics, Mr. Harper asked students to go on a walka-bout around campus in search of anything that uses power. While on their journeys, students had to explain how the devices they encountered were using power and whether they were solving a problem or creating one. From here students will delve into how energy is created, what its impacts are, and ways to reduce energy in order to improve the school. Check back soon to see if our EPIC Power Rangers have defeated the energy crisis!
