CONCLUSIONS

The deformations registered by the Pleistocene d e l t a i c sediments out- cropping e a s t of t h e Rio Colorado mouth include f au l t i ng and ve r t i ca l u p l i f t . Strat igraphic interpretat ion of the d e l t a i c sequences provide a chronological framework f o r the evolution of the deformations.

Two episodes of f au l t i ng are distinguished: an older and st roger one, associating normal and s t r ike - s l ip motions, and a Younger and weaker one with only normal f a u l t s . Similarly the ve r t i ca l motions have been stronger i n the past than i n the l a t e Quaternary even i f u p l i f t r a t e s up t p 130 mm/103 years seem t o have been effect ive i n sme p a r t of the coastal area.

A l l the deformations a re re la ted t o the ac t iv i ty of t he Cerro Prieto Faul t which l i n k s t he Salton Trough (and fu r the r north the San' Andreas Fault system) and the Gulf of Cal i f -mia province. The l a t e r a l motions i n t he area of t he Rio Colorado mouth are concentrated along the Cerro Prieto Fault. The second order f a u l t pattern described i n the Golfo de Santa Clara region and the evidence of a strong u p l i f t reveal t h a t the motions along the Cerro P r i e - t o Fault were dis t r ibuted i n a much wider perturbated zone than presently, a t sane t i m e a t t he end of t he Middle Pleistocene, than presently.
