Why markets?• Agriculture - key income stream for 86% of the

population in PNG• 55% of women reported experiencing some form of

violence in the previous 12 months while at the market.

• 22% females report experiencing more than one incident of SV in the market.

• 64% of females and males reported witnessing some form of SV in the market.

• SV was not the only problem, extortion, theft, ethnic clashes and other forms of violence.

• Local population not going to markets and virtually no tourism in markets due to safety concerns

• Health and sanitation concerns, lack of maintenance and planning

• Markets are social spaces and provide an opportunity to build and strengthen communities
