Blind spots severely undermine the reliability of your video surveillance system.

Seeing everything in a single image without blind spots is therefore a major benefit significantly improving the quality of any video surveillance solution.

With one camera indoor and outdoor only, panoramic cameras are the most suitable solution to monitor areas without any blind spots. To reveal details or identify objects over large distances, PTZ cameras are ideal as they can locate, track and zoom in on objects, thus providing all necessary information for quick reactions and adequate decisions. Details however come at a

cost. More details mean higher resolutions and therefore bitrate management and the ability to lessen network strain becomes of utmost importance in today’s IP video surveillance world.

With its FLEXIDOME IP panoramic camera family, Bosch Security Systems now offers such a solution while introducing the highest image quality within the field of panoramic video surveillance. The FLEXIDOME IP panoramic 7000 MP camera offers a full 180- or 360-degree overview of areas with twelve megapixel sensor resolution at 30 frames per second combined with a fish-eye lens. For indoor and outdoor applications, FLEXIDOME IP panoramic 5000 MP offers the smallest 360-degree dome

design available on the market combining a five megapixel sensor resolution at 15 frames per second with a fish-eye lens. Both models ensure a complete overview in one image without blind spots and easy capturing of fast moving objects, significantly improving the performance of any solution. Combined with the Video Security Client software, users can select up to six different viewing modes. The FLEXIDOME IP panoramic 7000 MP camera additionally features full suite of on-board video analytics, called Intelligent Video Analysis (IVA), ensuring that operators are alerted when needed and relevant information is delivered most efficiently both live and in retrospect.

Reduced network strain and storage requirementsThe innovative technologies of FLEXIDOME IP panoramic cameras improve image quality while lowering video surveillance costs. Built-in Intelligent Dynamic Noise Reduction reduces bitrates by up to 50 percent, storage costs and network strain. Since excess noise is reduced at the source during image capture, the lower bitrates do not compromise the video quality. Possible disturbances caused by fluctuating front or backlight are eliminated by the Bosch unique built-in Intelligent Auto Exposure. Embedded in the FLEXIDOME IP panoramic 7000 MP, it dynamically adjusts the camera exposure, automatically adapting to changing light conditions providing perfect exposure of objects at any time.

The FLEXIDOME IP panoramic 7000 MP offers full area overviews, while enabling users to zoom in on and select multiple regions. The close-up images are transmitted in separate streams ensuring that overview and detail can be viewed simultaneously – all in high resolution – making video images easily manageable without losing the bigger picture. Client-side and built-in dewarping capabilities ease managing video images by eliminating the image distortion caused by the fish-eye lens.

Edge dewarping, offered exclusively by FLEXIDOME IP panoramic 7000 MP, also eases integration with third-party Video Management Systems by offering undistorted images directly from the camera, lowering requirements at client-side. Through edge

dewarping users can select up to five viewing modes. It enables bitrate reduction and lessens network strain by streaming only relevant parts of the scene. Since edge dewarping is performed in the camera, no additional computation power is needed.

24/7 access and control anywhere, any timeSecurity managers cannot be everywhere 24 hours a day. All FLEXIDOME IP panoramic cameras, in combination with either a DIVAR IP recording solution or VIDEOJET XTC, fully support the Dynamic Transcoding technology from Bosch, which – in combination with the Video Security Client software – provides 24/7 remote access, live video streams, recordings and HD dewarped images regardless

of available bandwidth. Dynamic Transcoding automatically adjusts the transmission bitrate to the available bandwidth on a network ensuring smooth video streaming. When video streaming is paused at an incident, full HD still images are provided instantly.

On-board intelligent video analytics add sense and structureFLEXIDOME IP panoramic 7000 MP features IVA from Bosch that triggers alarms when needed and helps to trace back events in seconds. IVA technology adds sense and structure by means of metadata which enables effortless forensic searches and intelligently keeps track of moving objects within the overview image, either automatically or based on a predefined alarm rule. By combining up to 8 out of 16 available IVA rules, complex tasks become easier, false alarms are minimized.

Low profile design and easy installationAll panoramic cameras from Bosch are designed for easy installation. The FLEXIDOME IP panoramic 7000 MP offers an unique twist-click installation concept reducing installation times substantially. After installing the designated mounting ring, the camera is simply installed without special tools by twist-click. Camera configuration and SD-card changes are possible without demounting the camera and

firmware updates for all models can be performed remotely. Moreover, their design makes them almost invisible and thus ideal for situations in need of both highest performance and highest aesthetics.

Never lose track againThe new PTZ cameras AUTODOME IP 4000 and AUTODOME IP 5000 models from Bosch help to locate, track and zoom in on details providing information that enable operators to accurately react instantly. They add precise identification of objects over large distances and hands-on control to all kinds of video surveillance solutions. This counts for large retail stores, shopping malls or casinos, where security personnel needs clear sight of events to react.

The design of AUTODOME IP 4000 HD blends into interior designs of various applications, yet identifying objects up to 95 meters in full HD thanks to its 12x optical zoom. When the coverage of larger spaces is required, AUTODOME IP 5000 HD is ideal. Full pan and tilt control with the 30x optical zoom capabilities enable identification of objects up to 190 meters away in full HD. For low light conditions, AUTODOME IP 5000 IR ensures visibility up to 150 meters even in complete darkness. Its built-in intelligent IR beam ensures optimum illumination of objects regardless of zoom level. With superior privacy masking, AUTODOME IP 5000 models safeguard individual privacy when monitoring public spaces.

AUTODOME IP 4000 and IP 5000 will be added to the already existing AUTODOME IP 7000 models, presenting the most advanced cameras of the complete family. AUTODOME IP starlight 7000 HD features the Bosch starlight technology, ensuring 24/7 protection regardless of lightning conditions, while built-in IVA helps personnel to focus on relevant situations by alerting them when needed and ensuring quick retrieval of data from hours of stored video. IVA also enables Intelligent Tracking of moving objects based on predefined rules. By distinguishing between single and multiple reference points, Intelligent Tracking provides uninterrupted tracking. Optimal capturing of objects is assured by dynamically adjusting the field of view.

Bosch IP high-definition cameras, encoders and analytics work seamlessly with a wide range of security software and recording solutions from Bosch and many other industry providers. This is backed by ONVIF conformance (Open Network Video Interface Forum), edge dewarping and the Integration Partner Program (IPP), giving developers immediate access to software development tools to easily integrate Bosch products with third-party systems. Honeywell has launched GX Remote Control mobile web application Version 2, a solution that allows users to remotely access and control Galaxy® Flex and Galaxy Dimension intruder alarm systems. With

smartphone and tablet usage skyrocketing, the app is designed to provide customers with a simpler and more intuitive way to manage their security systems wherever they are in the world.

Honeywell’s latest GX Remote Control app Version 2 is ideal for small businesses with a single premises – such as garages, shops, healthcare practices and offices, and for homeowners. With the mobile app a busy business owner or homeowner can instantly request a status report, set and unset the alarm and review log information – anywhere, anytime – saving time and providing peace of mind.

“As our customers move toward a world increasingly dominated by smartphones and tablets, we’re focused on ensuring that all of our security solutions evolve in lockstep,” comments Piotr Karpinski, intruder product manager EMEA, Honeywell Security Group. “This latest version of the GX Remote Control app offers unprecedented access to features and functionality when small business owners, homeowners and installers are on the road.”

GX Remote Control mobile app Version 2, available from the Apple® App Store and Google Play™ store

app, is even more intuitive than the original version. In addition to offering extra functionality to support end users and installers, the app gives users the ability to control more than one panel from a single smart device, making it much easier to manage security across multiple sites, including home and office space. An improved event log makes it easier to identify the cause

of an alarm and take appropriate action. The user interface is modern and more closely aligned with existing app experiences on the market, and with single step and faster log in, it’s even easier to access and operate.

Installers can conduct diagnostic tests and maintain Galaxy® Flex and Galaxy Dimension security systems – remotely across multiple locations – using GX Remote Control, reducing the time lost to resource-hungry site visits and ultimately boosting revenue and customer satisfaction. Customers who wish to use the app may need to update their Galaxy Flex or Galaxy Dimension system to include an Ethernet module, which provides installers with up-sell opportunities to expand existing customers’ systems. In addition, owing to its fully tested end-to-end encryption, installers and end users can have greater confidence in using the app to manage security systems.n For more information please visit www.honeywell.com/security/uk

Growth and expansion for Green Gate access systemsKent based company, Green Gate Access Systems, has announced the opening of an additional office in Salisbury. The operation will be headed up by new employee, Dan Small, who has recently been appointed as ‘Area Installation Manager’, with more than seven years’ experience in the industry. In 2014, Green Gate Access Systems received more than 120 leads from around the Salisbury area and it is anticipated that an office in this location will fulfil an obvious requirement for their services.

In addition to new employee, Dan Small, the company has also welcomed Freddie Woolgar, who joins the team as ‘Installation Assistant’ and apprentice, Jimmy Wright, who has joined under the government apprentice scheme. Wright is the third apprentice to be taken on by Green Gate Access Systems, one of whom, Tom Egan, was shortlisted in the ‘Kent Excellence in Business Awards’ in 2013. As Sampson explains, steady and sustained growth will ensure the company remains one of the most respected in the industry.

“We are delighted to be opening our new Salisbury office, which will hopefully service the busy M4 corridor from Basingstoke through to Bristol and there is clearly a need for this.” he said. “Furthermore, I am confident that Dan, Freddie and Jimmy will bring a vast range of skills and experience to their roles. I value their contribution to the continued growth and success of the company and we are well on track with our ambitious strategy for the future.”

Dual technology readers strengthen Videx accesscontrol offeringVidex has launched its new dual technology readers into the access control market. The readers, which are used to limit access to an area or building to authorised personnel only, increase the security of all types of buildings, both public and private.

The readers are available in a number of different formats including proximity fob and card access, finger print access and coded access. They enable these technologies to be combined to offer either enhanced security measures or a choice of access to the user.

Neil Thomas, National Sales Manager at Videx, said: “There are several ways that dual technology readers can provide a critical role in the access control management of a building. For example, in high security applications it could be a requirement for users to validate two levels of security in order to gain access to an area or building. These two levels could be finger print and code, finger print and proximity card or proximity card and code. Only after validation of both these steps the user will be granted access. Alternatively, users could be offered the option of using either technology to gain access. This is particularly useful where users may be unable to use a particular technology due to a disability, for example, or if

they have a preferred preference.” The readers are available in surface or flush mounting

option with the flush available in both a vertical and horizontal profile. There are six finishes available (silver, white, grey, green, red or blue) to ensure these units will complement any décor or building design. Using the industry standard Wiegand protocol for communication to the control units enables these readers to be used on both the Videx Portal Plus networkable access control system and third party access systems offering a flexible design. The range also includes exit buttons and single technology readers all in the same design and colour range.

Neil added: “The readers provide great flexibility of access control for users and different levels of security. They’re also available in different formats and finishes and designed in a way that can complement existing interior and exterior environments. Dual technology readers can be used in schools, hospitals, commercial buildings, residential environments and airports, where maximum security is a priority.”

CEM AC2000 Airport access control and security management system upgraded to reflect latest technology innovations, including CEM’s new emerald access terminal

CEM Systems, part of the Security Products business unit of Tyco, have announced that its long standing customer London Gatwick Airport has undergone a major upgrade of its AC2000 access control and security management system. The project was phased throughout 2014 and involved an upgrade of AC2000 Airport software, as well as the upgrade of more than 700 card readers throughout the airport terminals to support PicoPass smart card technology. CEM’s revolutionary intelligent access terminal, emerald, has also been installed at Gatwick Airport, providing a modern, innovative solution that goes beyond access control.

London Gatwick is the UK’s second largest airport, serving around 200 destinations in 90 countries, with more than 38 million passengers a year.

“Over the last year we have worked with CEM Systems to seamlessly upgrade our existing AC2000 security system, which has proven to be highly reliable and powerful. As a large system with more than 80,000 card holders and due to the critical nature of the airport environment we needed a phased upgrade that ensured zero system downtime”, said David Rees, Business System Manager for Operations. “CEM support was second to none with the AC2000 Airport software upgrade performed remotely and quickly”.

“CEM Systems has been working in partnership with Gatwick Airport for over 25 years, during which time their AC2000 security management system has been continually upgraded and customized to meet their unique aviation requirements” said Philip Verner,

Regional Sales Director, EMEA, CEM Systems. “This recent upgrade was a significant project that required all existing CEM S610e card readers to be upgraded to support highly secure PicoPass smart card technology. We are also delighted that our new CEM emerald IP access terminals have been installed to enhance operations at Gatwick Airport’s arrival gates and to act as an information point for ID staff and flight agents”.

The first of its kind in the industry, emerald is a touch screen reader, door controller, VoIP Intercom and system terminal all in a single box. The innovative touch screen LCD greets cardholders by illuminating as they approach and provides a user friendly security experience. As an intelligent multifunctional IP access terminal, emerald provides London Gatwick Airport with more than access control at the door. Airport security can use remote apps on the terminal to update personnel records, perform reader maintenance and display airport adverts and messages.

Gatwick Airport are also using the unique emerald flight arrivals door mode, which enables flight arrival gates in both the North and South Terminal to intelligently route domestic and international passengers accordingly. Upon a valid card swipe, flight agents intuitively select a predefined flight carrier number on the emerald terminal. Emerald then interlocks the appropriate doors to allow international passengers to be routed to passport and border controls, with domestic passengers simply routed to baggage collection.

With the major upgrade now complete, London Gatwick Airport has a truly innovative, future proof security platform that provides resilient access control, and improves card user experience at the door and enhances airport operations.

Panasonic is set to launch a 4K surveillance camera, at an industry event at The Tower of London, which the company says will deliver greater coverage at a lower cost.

The WV-SFV781L dome camera delivers ‘True 4K’ image quality and resolution at both the centre and the corners of the image.

Aimed at applications such as intersections, airports, railway stations, car parks, factories, warehouses and port facilities, where a large number of cameras are required to provide full coverage, the camera’s sensor offers strong low light performance and covers a 16-100 degree field of view, with no lens exchange required.

The True 4K camera can cover a view four times larger than 1080p cameras, and a view nine times larger than 720p cameras. It can also cover two and three times the distance of 1080p and 720p cameras respectively.

“When taking into account brackets, cabling, wall mounts and other operational costs associated with installing a CCTV camera, switching to 4K can significantly reduce costs,” said Gerard Figols, European Head of Product Marketing, Panasonic Security. “We estimate that costs could be reduced by as much as 50 per cent, as one Panasonic 4K camera offers the image quality and coverage of four full HD cameras.”

“A large shopping centre car park, for example, requires vehicle model, colour and licence plate identification as well as people monitoring. A 50,000 square meter car park would require a total of 70 HD cameras to provide effective coverage, whereas it would only require 21 Panasonic 4K cameras; that’s significantly less hardware to manage and maintain,” Figols added.

The 1/1.7 type sensor, in combination with the Panasonic True 4K F1.6 lens, achieves low light performance at just 0.3 lux in colour or 0.03 lux in black and white mode, making it the best performing 4K class surveillance camera.

The camera also has Smart IR-LED making it possible for clear and sharp pictures at 0.0 lux across the whole 4K image. The rain wash coating helps reduce maintenance costs and helps avoid the effect of the drops and dust.

Virtual PTZ operation allows the user to focus on one smaller area in view whilst still recording the whole area, so no event is missed in mission critical applications.

Sky’s the limit for Security Doors

Security Doors, a division of ASSA ABLOy UK, has successfully completed a £5m design, supply and installation of Powershield steel doors to the new Terminal 2A at Heathrow Airport.

The first flights arrived at The Queen’s Terminal at the beginning of June 2014, almost 60 years after the original Terminal 2 opened as the airport’s first passenger terminal. The £2.5 billion project is now home to 26 airlines and has 332 daily flights to 54 global destinations. The development includes the terminal building, associated satellite pier (T2B) and a new cooling station and energy centre.

To help provide the highest level of security for the project, ASSA ABLOy Security Doors supplied Powershield fire and personnel doorsets, all of which have special polyester powder coat finishes and full height wrap-around stainless steel push and kick plates for added durability and a high-end finish.

Brian Sofley, Managing Director for ASSA ABLOy Security Doors, said: “The project was one of the UK’s biggest construction sites and one of the biggest challenges we have faced at ASSA ABLOy Security Doors. Working in airports presents huge logistical issues that are not normally found on other construction projects, such as delivery restrictions and the complexity and

volume of other works being carried out during door installation, due to the large footprints of airport sites. We ensured that there was a full time management and supervisory team on site at all times to oversee the installation of the completed doorsets and to ensure that high quality, safe, secure solutions were delivered.

“Our steel doors are extremely durable and provide a high level of fire protection that could prevent the spread of fire and create maximum evacuation time for passangers and staff in the event of an emergency – an essential safety feature in busy transport hubs like airports.”

Powershield fire doors have been tested in accordance with BS EN 1634-1:2000 and are accredited under the Certifire Compliance Scheme.

Barry Weekes, Head of Design Development, at Heathrow, said: “As the UK’s only hub airport, Heathrow required a high quality solution to meet our exacting security requirements.

“The superior strength, durability and security of all the steel doors supplied to this project, combined with their relatively low maintenance requirements makes them the ideal choice.”

Locken provides secure access to energy industryeSB telecoms (eSBt), a subsidiary of Ireland’s public electricity distribution company, has contracted LOcKeN to upgrade its access infrastructures.

the contract, which covers the provision of 1,000 access systems for Global Systems for Mobile communications (GSM) base stations at 450 locations throughout the country, follows a pilot programme that allowed eSBt to ascertain the benefits of LOcKeN’s access control solution. Subsequently eSBt decided to protect Points of Presence (PoP) cabins to comply with health and safety regulations.

Located in remote sites exposed to wind and rain, eSBt’s facilities must be accessible to a 1,700-strong contractor crew, 95% of whom are external third parties. the LOcKeN solution is ideal for controlling access to infrastructure at remote sites, ensuring thousands of access requests are granted to contractor personnel every month. tailored programming of access rights guarantees secure access.

the LOcKeN solution is integrated with the eSBt extranet, significantly improving operating effectiveness by enabling automatic transfer of data to LOcKeN’s advanced software suite. Similarly work access authorisations generated from the eSBt extranet will automatically generate access rights via LOcKeN’s software.

Alpro’s overhead transom closers used on the venue’s doors are a means of hydraulically controlling the opening and closing of an aluminium door. Features include dual closing speed to allow flexibility, three levels of spring strength and 90-degree hold open facility.

Fabricators benefit from the ability to adjust the latching and closing force according to the weight and height of individual doors as well as type of usage. Fine-tuning to accommodate the exact needs of visitors is all-important in a leisure application.

Alpro worked closely with IDF to create doors in the style of a Crittall window. Across three floors, the Pop Art-themed complex includes a restaurant, cocktail bars, a cinema and function rooms. Aesthetic appearances are at a premium and Alpro supplied a modified slim-line version of their 98 Series pull door handles with an offset crank to avoid compromising locking mechanisms finished in a powder-coat specified by the client.

The pull handles from the Impressionist range are manufactured from aluminium or 304-grade stainless steel in 25, 32 and 38mm diameters with all versions being suitable for bolt-thro (single-side) or back-to-back fixing.

Keith Parry, Sales Director at Alpro, said: “Our transom closers are designed for durability and have been tested independently at 250,000 double-action cycles. At this site, the client made the unusual request for the closers to be mounted on the outside to give 180-degree opening when required.”

IDF Aluminium specialise in the design, manufacture and installation of aluminium doors. The door solutions are designed for use in commercial and public sector environments where usage may be high but maintenance costs must be minimised.

IDF has recently used Alpro transom closers at a school in Essex and a gourmet restaurant in Cardiff. IDF has 30 years’ experience in the retail frontage and commercial door market. It ensures a quality service by designing and fabricating all of its own doors and shop fronts in-house with no use of sub-contractors. The client portfolio covers leisure, transport, local government, healthcare and education.

Official release of Comelit’s new video entry phone at IFSEC 2015

Comelit has added to its market-leading access control range for apartment blocks and residential complexes with the ‘Mini’ video door entry phone, which the company will be demonstrating at this year’s IFSEC in June at London’s Excel Centre.

The ‘Mini’ is an enhanced version of Comelit’s entry-level solution, which maximises security while remaining unobtrusive. The design enhances user convenience of the entry phone and display screen while also minimising delays for legitimate visitors and protecting against unwanted callers and would-be intruders.

The 4.3” 16:9 black and white or colour screen offers unrivalled brightness and contrast control that makes the unit clearly readable for users, even in unusual ambient light conditions. The aesthetic appeal of the ‘Mini’ can be optimised with ringtone and melody customisation, and compact dimensions make the units discreet. Users benefit from four touch-sensitive buttons for controlling lock release, as well as comprehensive privacy functions and options for auxiliary commands, such as calls to a switchboard.

Installers will appreciate that Comelit’s ‘Simplebus Top’ system uses analogue 2-wire technology. This allows external and internal units to be up to 1,200 metres apart but still operate from the same riser line. At large apartment complexes with considerable distances between a building’s entrance panel and the

central concierge, a 2-wire system with non-polarised cables makes scalable connectivity (using several building risers if necessary) a simple matter.

The ‘Mini’ video entry door phones are basic units within Comelit’s comprehensive catalogue, but still offer high performance. A deluxe option, finished in black, features soft-touch on the handset and eight buttons as standard with a door status indicator LED. Lock release is shown to the user by a backlit LED button.

These video entry phones offer flexible mounting options with a range of backplates and finishing accessories that enables easy switchover from legacy equipment supplied by other manufacturers.

Francesca Boeris, Sales Director, Comelit UK, said, “The ‘Mini’ range underlines Comelit’s commitment to investing in new products while conducting extensive market research to ensure we develop offerings in line with the needs of users, installers and facility managers.”

Francesca continued: “Sales of the ‘Mini’ are already high and it’s being specified across various residential sites where users are giving outstanding feedback on experiences with the product. Comelit will be showcasing the ‘Mini’ at IFSEC (stand G900) and we invite the industry to a demonstration of our latest innovative monitor.”

MIPS, the 21st international exhibition on protection, security and fire safety took

place in pavilion 75 of Moscow’s VDNKh from 13–16 April 2015.

Over the past 20 years, MIPS has established itself as an authority among professionals of this industry. In his welcome to exhibitors and visitors, Viktor Zolotov, First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, noted that MIPS “uses its well-deserved reputation among professionals and manufacturers of special machinery and equipment as one of the best trade exhibitions and congress projects in Russia and the CIS. This is confirmed by the steady increase in the number of Russian and foreign exhibitors, as well as official guests and visitors.”

Despite the slowing rate of development of the Russian economy in general, over the coming years the security market is expected to grow. MIPS serves to confirm these trends — this year, the exhibition space was kept in its entirety, with over 100 new companies exhibiting. The exhibition featured national stands from China and Taiwan.

Over 430 companies from 22 countries exhibited at MIPS 2015, a third of which were international manufacturers, and around 300 companies were Russian. The exhibitors presented their advanced technical developments in the following sections:• CCTV and video surveillance• Fire-safety, rescue equipment, and

occupational health and safety• Integrated security systems• Perimeter protectionToday, experts cite the main

trend in the security market as the intellectualisation and integration of security systems. Leading manufacturers of video surveillance systems, security and telecommunications are developing to cater to incorporating the concepts of smart cities and buildings and transport systems interconnected through cloud services and online interfaces. By 2020, experts predict that the number of devices connected to the internet could reach 50 billion.

MIPS 2015 focused on security systems used in implementing smart city projects, the creation of a single urban information and communication space, which integrates ICT solutions for transport, energy, utilities, physical infrastructure, management and public safety. Many experts predict that by 2025 the number of smart cities will grow by four times and

will reach 88 (in 2013 there were 20). This process will stimulate joint activity between city administrations and commercial businesses. In 2013, the volume of global investments in the development of smart cities reached $1 million, and by 2025, it is thought that the size of investments will reach $12 million.

Leading Russian and international companies presented their developments for creating smart and safe cities including: Axis Communications, Avigilon Corporation, HID Global, ITV | AxxonSoft, Grand Prix, ISS and others.

A number of Russian companies exhibiting at MIPS export to other countries. These are companies with impeccable business reputations: Argus Security, Stilsoft, Istochnik+, Bolid, and ITV. The Strelets radio systems manufacturer, Argus Security, is ranked among the

Strelets has been successfully exported to many countries and is used at Buckingham Palace, the Belgium Royal Theatre, Oxford and Cambridge Universities, the tents of the Cirque du Soleil and the Hungarian Academy of Science.

MIPS 2015’s general partner was once again Beward, the Russian developer and manufacturer of IP video cameras.

Business programmeThe business programme offered a range of specialised conferences dedicated to discussing topical issues of security, learning about advanced global practice and the successful use of innovative Russian and international technology. Some of the key topics included:

The Security of Warehouse Complexes and Logistics Terminals conference in which participants were able to exchange opinions, tried and tested practical experience, and knowledge of warning systems for internal

and external security threat in warehouse complexes and logistics terminals. Nedap Security Management was the sponsor of the conference.

The Cloud Technologies in Monitoring and Security conference touched on issues of integrating cloud technologies in to the Russian security industry, current trends of developing the industry, the development of VsaaS and ACaaS in Russia, opportunities and prospects that cloud technologies can offer participants of the market and the end user, and much more.

The Museum Security conference covered issues of ensuring security for historic and cultural buildings, the evacuation of people in case of a fire, theft and vandalism prevention, as well as identification markers for exhibits. The Deputy Director of Operations at the State Hermitage Museum, Alexey Bogdanov was the moderator of the conference.

MIPS has been rebranded for 2016 and will be called MIPS / Securika. The next edition of the event will take place on 14-17 March 2016 at Expo Centre in Moscow.

MIPS /Securika is organised by ITE Group, the leader of the Russian exhibition services market.

Records were broken at this year’s Counter Terror Expo (CTX) exhibition and conference as this pivotal event for the security and

counter terror sectors demonstrated its international appeal. Held at Olympia London on 21 and 22 April, CTX attracted VIP visitors from over 30 countries, a 30% increase on the 2014 show.

The World Terror Congress, one of the high profile conference streams staged at CTX, made the news around the world, as keynote speakers including Mark Rowley, Head of Specialist Operations and Assistant Commissioner, Metropolitan Police and Jamie Shea, NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, warned about new terrorist threats. Mark Rowley described how ISIS is seeking to find recruits among ‘the vulnerable, people with violent backgrounds, very young people and those with mental health issues”.

On the exhibition floor, a record

number of exhibitors rebooked for next year’s event, delighted with the numbers of quality visitors coming onto their stands.

In a significant new development, the 2016 event will be entitled ‘Security & Counter Terror Expo’.

Tim Porter, Managing Director, Clarion Defence & Security, said “The evolution of the show’s title is in response to its unique position. The event now brings together the broad spectrum of stakeholders concerned with security and countering terrorism in both the public and private sectors. The big increase we have seen in overseas visitors from the paramilitary and law enforcement sectors, as well as security, is a particularly important development”.

The picture of success was replicated in CTX’s two co-located sister events that were staged concurrently. Ambition, the exhibition and conference dedicated to Emergency, Preparedness, Resilience and Response (EPRR) and Forensics, the international exhibition and conference for the forensic sector and its supply chain, both set records in terms of VIP speakers and visitor attendance n

For managing director Martin Stephan, it is extremely important to offer high-quality goods to his customers. This is why a video surveillance system has been installed in each of the furniture stores. He decided to use the equipment from Dallmeier following several recommendations – and he is more than happy with this choice.

Panomera® MFS technology watches over Möbelhof IngolstadtIn all, there are three Panomera®

multifocal sensor systems installed in the furniture store in Ingolstadt. They are concentrated mainly on the entrance area and the goods collection zone, where customers load the furniture they have purchased into their vehicles. “The cameras enable us to determine quite clearly the point at which risk was transferred from the warehouse to the collector. This is important for us for the purpose of ensuring the quality of our goods”, explains Martin Stephan.

Page 31: In Security April 2015

IN SECURITy I April 2015 I 29

MFS technology delivers substantial added value compared with conventional single sensor cameras. “The loading zone is quite long. Thanks to the amazingly detailed resolution of the Panomera®, we can watch over the entire area with just one camera. That not only saves us the cost of additional cameras, but it has also made installation and cable laying much simpler”, he continues.

Besides the multifocal sensor systems, there are also several IP cameras with integrated infrared lighting and vandal-resistant dome cameras in operation in the store. These provide effective protection against vandalism or theft in both the outside and inside areas.

The existing, analogue cameras from a different manufacturer that were already in place in Ingoldstadt were incorporated in

the new Dallmeier system. “Of course, that was an immense advantage to us in financial terms, because it meant that we did not have to replace the equipment all at once, we could continue using our existing cameras, and change over gradually and completely to IP technology”, says Martin Stephan with satisfaction.

Until now, there has been no video equipment at the Parsberg location – and here, Mr. Stephan is using Dallmeier HD cameras exclusively.

Recording from the cameras is performed on Dallmeier appliances, which make it possible to create either a system consisting purely of IP cameras or a hybrid recording system using IP-based and analogue cameras at the same time. For analysis, the Smavia Viewing Client is available. Martin Stephan says: “For us, it is very convenient to be

able to control not only our existing cameras but also the new HD cameras and the MFS systems via a single management system.”

Total vision, even mobileA dedicated line was set up to connect the furniture stores in Ingolstadt and Parsberg. “This means that when I am in Parsberg I can see how full the car park is in Ingolstadt and open up secondary parking areas if necessary. This way, we can respond early and control the streams of visitors to make sure the shopping experience is as pleasant as possible for our customers.”

One feature that Martin Stephan finds particularly useful is the Dallmeier iPhone/iPad app, called “DMVC”, available in the iTunes Appstore: “I travel a lot, and this app gives me access to the camera images wherever I am.”

“We are now able to control the existing cameras, the new HD cameras and the MFS systems via a single management system.”

Page 32: In Security April 2015

Ready for the futureThe Dallmeier system has proven its worth in practical operation, and Martin Stephan is satisfied with his choice: “Our old, analogue system has simply reached the limits of its capabilities. And so with Dallmeier, we have found a video system that is not only modern, but which can be expanded and most importantly will continue to deliver outstanding performance for a long time to come.”

Dallmeier has at its disposal more than 30 years of experience in transmission, recording as well as picture processing technology and is an outstanding pioneer of CCTV/IP solutions worldwide. This profound knowledge is used in the development of intelligent

software and high quality recorder and camera technologies enabling Dallmeier to not only offer stand-alone systems, but complete network solutions up to large-scale projects with perfectly integrated components. Right from the beginning the company always focused on own innovative developments and highest quality and reliability. Dallmeier is the only manufacturer in Germany that develops and manufactures all components on its own. This includes the entire product range, from cameras to picture storage and transmission to intelligent video analysis and even individually adjusted management systems. Quality made by Dallmeier, made in Germany!

Over the years, Dallmeier has repeatedly given fresh impetus to the market with new developments and extraordinary innovations. The world’s first DVR for example, which introduced digital recording to the entire CCTV industry, came from Dallmeier. The multifocal sensor system Panomera® will have a similarly groundbreaking effect: This unique and novel camera technology will revolutionise the market and open up completely new possibilities to the video security industry. This and the extensive experience in the CCTV and IP field have led to a top position in the international market for digital video surveillance systems.

Access control is one of the most important elements of building security. It is vital in so many ways, not only

from an anti-intruder or theft perspective but also in terms of health and safety.

In almost every building – whether that’s an office block, a school, a hospital or a shopping centre – many people enter, exit and move around the premises. It is crucial therefore that access into and around buildings, where people are granted or denied entry to certain zones at different times, is managed effectively.

Every building is different and presents its own challenges. It is therefore important to find a flexible door entry system which can be adapted to that particular building to meet a client’s requirements.

During the planning stages, it’s important to understand the

function of the building and the type of use the system will have. you have to ask yourself (and know the answer to) a range of questions. For example, which entrances and exits require access control? Should the access control be in the form of coded keypads, proximity fob readers or a type of biometric reader? Should the door entry include video as well as audio communication? Do these entrances need to service tenants or employees? Do they also need to service visitors or customers?

The exit of buildings in particular requires additional thought. For instance, in the event of an emergency how would someone negotiate the access control to exit the building? Solutions to this would normally include break glass units and links to the fire alarm to automatically release the doors. An appropriate access control system can also generate reports to show who is in the building at the time

of the alarm so you’re aware of peoples’ location in the event of an emergency.

Legislation also plays a key role in access control. Building regulations must be followed when putting an appropriate system in place and thought must go into how access control will, for example, affect users with disabilities following the Equality Act 2010 guidelines. Secured By Design, the official UK Police flagship initiative supporting the principles of designing out crime, may also be specified which means only those products that have passed the stringent tests of Secured By Design should be used.

When installing an access control system, there are also physical challenges to be aware of. Most access control and door entry systems are connected together throughout the building using low voltage cabling. Quite often, the cabling is installed as part of the

first fix and sometimes the access control and door entry equipment has not been fully specified at this stage. It’s a good idea therefore to know what the right cable to install is because, in the long run, this will save you time and money.

A common cable type installed at the first fix would be Cat5. This cable is suitable for many door entry and access control systems but care must be taken to fully understand the distances between devices to ensure the cable resistance falls within the manufacturer’s guidelines.

An issue that has become increasingly apparent is the need to know the difference between solid copper and copper coated cables. In most instances, solid copper must be used on door entry and access control systems due to the need for these cables to carry current and have a low voltage drop. Copper coated cables such as copper coated steel (CCS) or copper coated aluminium (CCA)

although may look attractive when comparing the price between that and solid copper will have a much higher resistance and therefore will suffer from much greater voltage drop than a solid copper cable. Not knowing this difference can prove costly in the event the system is unable to function correctly due to a voltage drop.

When choosing a system, it is also important to know that it can be modified in the future if a building is expanded or undergoes a change of use. Product support, which is what we offer at Videx, is crucial when dealing with a customised solution. Knowing that there is support available either online, via phone or on site, can offer reassurance should you run into a problem that you can’t resolve on your own.

Videx offers bespoke systems designed with individual requirements including the facility to create customer firmware and software should a

particular feature not be available as standard. We can, for example, create bespoke wiring diagrams, panel layouts and offer training to installers.

New access control systems are constantly being developed so it’s important to keep abreast of the latest offerings. Ultimately, the best advice I can give in choosing the right system is that you need to first understand the client’s needs and any specifications they’ve requested. An out-of-box solution isn’t always available therefore it’s always best to talk to the manufacturer who will be able to listen to your requirements. Using their knowledge of access control systems, they can then help you find the one that best suits your requirements and, critically, meets the client’s needs.

As I am writing this, I am simultaneously monitoring the results of the general election, which by the time

that this article is published will probably be old news.

I hope that the Conservative majority will be good for the industry, having seen the result of the previous coalition lead to delay after delay in the promised introduction of security business licensing, mainly due to political infighting between various Government departments.

you will have gathered that I am in favour of business licensing, or at least in favour of what was originally proposed, as over the last four years the content has been diluted further and further in an attempt to get some form of legislation in place. The blueprint first published by the Security Industry Authority detailed a requirement for companies to comply with industry standards,

evidenced by an annual inspection. This was in my opinion a vital minimum line for the industry, as it would have meant that all security companies would have proper mechanisms for supporting the frontline security staff. It would also have removed the inequality where companies with proper support structures would not be competing against businesses operated from a car boot by individuals with a mobile phone and limited ability to provide the back-up that is vital to the lone security officer. The result of this would be more realistic pricing structures, which then could allow more investment spent on security officers, leading to better trained, higher calibre security professionals.

It wasn’t just the quality assessment aspect that was reduced by the politicians. Another key part of the original blueprint was the transformation of the licensing of individuals, which had completely disappeared by the

most recent legislative proposals. Whilst a lot of people focussed on the rebranding from “licensing” to “registration”, it was the underlying details such as a reduced cost partially due to annual payments that would have helped individual security officers.

So, my aim is not just to get the new Government to fulfil its numerous promises to introduce business licensing for security companies, but to ensure that it is the full version which was designed to improve the industry as opposed to some watered down coalition version!

Training is also still an issue. It was not a surprise to many people in the security industry when the BBC aired an edition of their Inside Out programme showing a couple of training centres which were submitting fraudulent examination papers, where the “students” received help with the answers and in some cases had not even had to attend any training.

“The blueprint published by the Security Industry Authority detailed a requirement for companies to comply with industry standards”

Rumours have been rife around the industry of such fraudulent practices since the commencement of licensing, though few cases have been backed up with this level of evidence.

I remember at the introduction of licensing, in the days when I was a Director of a security guarding company, having to take the examination for the conflict management unit (despite being qualified to train others in conflict management, which was a separate idiosyncrasy of the system) with a fellow Director of my company invigilating and thinking that less scrupulous companies could abuse similar situations by allowing cheating, as the invigilator has a vested interest in the outcome of the examination. Since then, and especially in my current role leading an industry membership body, I have expressed on a number of occasions a personal view that security examinations should take place at independent venues such as local colleges.

With a multitude of levels above the training establishments, i.e. the various awarding bodies, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual), the Security Industry Authority (SIA), and ultimately

the Government, there is plenty of opportunity for passing the buck for the responsibility for both investigating and preventing malpractice. It may even be added to the long list of proposed changes linked to the eventual introduction of security business licensing. Unfortunately, any changes are likely to lead to higher operating costs, which in turn will be reflected in certification fees and hence borne by either the individual security officers or their employers.

Whilst the awarding bodies, etc. need to evaluate whether their policing of the system is sufficient, there is also an element of responsibility with a segment of the security companies and their clients. There is obviously a market for taking on licensed individuals who have avoided training and proving competence, otherwise word would spread that there was no point in paying for training qualifications unless they had been earned. I am referring to the security companies who have no interest in quality and to whom a security officer is simply a commodity to provide to a client, this chain is followed by the equally guilty clients, who simply seek the presence of an individual on site and normally are more

interested in minimising the cost. When security companies and their clients are happy for security officers to receive minimum wage, is it any surprise that they are equally not bothered if the security officers also receive minimal training?

As the industry awaits the outcome of investigations by all the parties involved, we wonder what changes, if any, are likely to be introduced. I have already stated my preference for independent examination venues, one of the industry awarding bodies has published a white paper calling for trainers in the security industry to be licensed – a measure which would address both the issue of trainer sector competence and prevent the opportunity for repeated malpractice by the same trainer, other awarding bodies are being quiet on the subject – is this a case of burying their heads in the sand? Industry forums indicate that many of the actual trainers would like to see reforms and indicates the passion that the majority of trainers have for providing quality training. Hopefully any changes that are introduced will lead to an increased reliability and assurance that a licensed security officer also equates to a trained individual n

Rural crime prevention

BSI

A

At the beginning of March this year, Jamie Smart, chair of the NFU Scotland legal and technical committee asserted

that rural crime was on the rise; illustrated through recent figures from NFU Mutual which estimate that rural crime costs those who live and work in the countryside almost £2 million each year.1 Across the UK,

high value tractors worth around £80k have been targeted as well as lower value tractors with low-tech security systems. Livestock theft has also increased by 25%, making 2013 one of the worst years on record for livestock theft with Northern Ireland the worst affected area of the UK. James Kelly, Chief Executive of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) discusses.

Statistics also reveal that of all UK counties, Cambridgeshire bore the greatest cost from rural crime at £2.7m last year. Northern Ireland and the East Midlands saw the largest year-on-year increase (38% and 15% respectively). As well as tractors and livestock thefts, the other most commonly targeted items were fuel, tools and quad bikes, with the cost of quad bike theft rising by 14%.

Plant machinery is vulnerable as it is often left alone for longer periods of time, not to mention the common single-key operating system on a lot of older vehicles that can make them easier to start up and drive away. Plant theft is also a largely international crime, with organised criminals often stealing the goods and transporting them to international destinations within a matter of days, making them much harder to track and retrieve.

To make matters worse, other types of opportunist crimes – such as the theft of tools and ornaments – are also on the rise; meaning efficient security is of the utmost importance to the rural community. Rural crime cost the UK £44.5m last year, with all corners of the UK affected across all sectors of the agricultural industry. This means that although plant machinery is still a top priority on the rural community’s list of security concerns, criminals are consistently

finding new targets in order to generate profit.

With this in mind, what can the rural community do to protect their businesses?

There is a wide range of security products and services on the market that can help tackle the various problems, therefore, it can be beneficial to take a holistic approach to security, considering a number of different integrated methods rather than just a couple.

Physical security measures – such as gates, fences and locks – are often the first barrier of defence so it is critical that they are regularly maintained to work to their optimum potential. As the backbone of security, they should also be the best possible measures that the business can afford, for example investing in electronic security measures. As part of a layered approach to security, physical security measures can provide the essential layer of

protection that can help prevent crime all together, or at the very least give personnel ample time in order to react accordingly to a potential threat.

Overt obstructions such as security fences, gates, or security-wire products can discourage criminals from even attempting to breach the security, eliminating the risk immediately. Similarly, having a human presence is very effective. With well-trained manned guarding patrolling the perimeter, intruders are often immediately discouraged.

Perimeter protection should be linked to security further inside property boundaries, such as an intruder alarm or CCTV cameras, allowing for careful observation of the perimeter around the clock. CCTV cameras are very effective, especially when integrated with other systems. For example, using CCTV in conjunction with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) g

software allows for the identification of vehicles moving in and out of a site. Should an intruder take or damage property, ANPR can provide the police with valuable information to track down suspects.

CCTV systems and detectors positioned around the perimeter can be linked to a Remote Video Response Centre (RVRC), so should an intruder set a detector off, an operator at the RVRC will be able to decide the best course of action. This can be as simple as issuing a verbal warning over the system, which scares off intruders and prevents them from entering the premises further or depending on the threat, alert the authorities without the intruder realising they have been detected.

For some, covert perimeter protection is a more desirable choice. Some intruders may be able to break

through covert perimeter protection, and as it is more obvious, figure out ways to defeat them over time. With concealed forms of perimeter protection, intruders are not aware that they have been spotted.

Particularly effective forms of covert security are heat and motion sensors that are hidden and connected to alarm systems. Known as Unattended Ground Systems (UGS) they enable an early warning system, giving personnel time to respond effectively.

Perimeter-specific applications of Video Content Analysis (VCA) – the automatic analysis of CCTV images in camera or centrally – such as the tripwire function, can be very effective. VCA is also utilised to create virtual tripwires along existing boundaries where other forms of physical security would be impractical. If a person is

simply walking nearby, they are not considered a threat therefore a great amount of attention doesn’t need to be paid to them. However, if that person then crosses the tripwire into a secure area, an alert is raised. The VCA draws attention to the cause of the alarm, allowing the operator to quickly assess the severity of the alarm. VCA is more resistant to false alarms caused by vegetation or animals and lower false alarm rates improve security.

The most essential part of choosing any security solution is that you purchase from a trusted supplier who meets the relevant British and European standards in regards to their equipment. BSIA members are all inspected to these high quality standards and can offer you a reputable service. To find a suppler near you, visit http://www.bsia.co.uk/company-finder n

The KeySure case is a pilfer proof, tamper evident keyless lockbox. This is the only non-electronic security device that will control and audit the use of a key, password or any other contents. Once an item is secured inside the KeySure it must be physically broken to access what’s inside. This provides physical accountability of the use of the protected item. This simple yet effective device is perfect for:

• Property Managers • IT Professionals• Office Buildings • Security Departments• Personal Use

The most powerful benefit of the KeySure device is that it can be used to prevent those responsible for your keys, flash drives or other personal information from unauthorized access by providing physical accountability. However, they are still able to access the contents in an emergency. This is possible because the KeySure case must be broken to retrieve its contents. This one-time-use key access box ensures that it: • Protects Both Parties from Surreptitious Use• Provides Physical Accountability • Prevents False Accusations• Eliminates Liability The KeySure case is Safe, Simple and Secure. No other key control product on the market is as easy to use or inexpensive because the KeySure device is the only non-electronic control key system available. This makes it an efficient and effective means of key security.
