EVALUATIONQUESTION 1:IN WHAT WAY DOES THE MEDIA PRODUCT DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCT?

AT A TECHNICAL LEVEL, HOW WELL DID YOU OBSERVE THE CONVENTIONS OF CONTINUITY, AND THE LANGUAGE OF FILM AND EDITING?

• During our film ‘Betrayal’ we used technical shots that we were taught in the first year, during the preliminary exercise. one of the first few shots we did was an eye line match of Jason looking at towards something of camera, which then on the next shot was shown to be a camera looking back at Jason. This was also a point of view sot, as we wanted to allow the audience to see and understand exactly what Jason was looking at, and also for them to realize that Jason was being watched by someone else, which already shows the genre is likely to be a thriller.

• We also used the rule of 180 degree line within our film. The 180 degree line was used for continuity as we wanted our audience to understand every actin characters were making, therefore we waned to follow this rule so that audience weren't confused, by the appearance of characters walking in opposite directions etc.

• We also used the match on action rule within our film, as this showed continuity in shots of what actions the characters were making. This shows through different shots that the actions characters make follow on from one shot to another, which also prevents the audience becoming confused.

AT A TECHNICAL LEVEL, HOW WELL DID YOU OBSERVE THE CONVENTIONS OF CONTINUITY, AND THE LANGUAGE OF FILM AND EDITING?• We also used the editing technique of fade in fade out in our film, as this shows a

change of time, location or situation. An example of one of the fade in fade out’s we used in our film is in the beginning scene, Jason gets attacked, the scene the fades out then in (BLACK SHOT) and then the next shot goes back to Jason, however in an abandoned room, which shows the change of time and location.

• We also used a cross dissolve in our film numerous time, we did this to also show a link between characters, and also this again shows a change in time or location. This effect could show two separate events occurring at the same time. For example we show Jason’s brother going to bank to get the ransom money, it then cross dissolves to Jason in the abandoned room which is happening at the same time. This technique was effective as it also shows the link between time and the link between these two characters in our film.

IN TERMS OF THE CONTENT, HOW DOES YOUR FILM REFLECT OR CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS OF THE GENRE YOU ARE WORKING IN? DOES IT FULFIL THE NATURE OF THE FILM GENRE OR SUBVERT IT? • Throughout our film, the content reflects conventions and stereotypes, of a typical thriller/crime film.

One of the first conventions that reflect thriller/crime films is the kidnapping. Kidnapping is a common event that occurs in thriller/crime films, usually the person who is kidnapped is a stereotypical vulnerable person e.g. woman, someone who has taken something or owes something to someone with a big expense, or in our films case someone (Jason) is kidnapped as someone (Dale, Jason’s friend), wants money from him. This reflects and supports a thriller/crime film due to the fact, there is a kidnaping, with ransom money involved(which is another typical convention that reflects the genre of our film.)

• Another feature of our film that reflects typical conventions in thriller/crime films is the hooded figures throughout the film. Hooded figures are usually used in films, to keep the individual mysterious and appear dangerous. Which helps build the tension within a thriller/crime film, as it is the fear of unknowing of who the person is, as you cannot see their face.

ARE THERE ANY ELEMETS OF DELIBERATE PASTICHE OR PARODY WHERE YOU ‘PLAY’ WITH GENRES, CODES AND HISTORY? ARE THERE ANT INTERTEXTUAL MOMENTS WHERE YOU HINT AT A REFERENCE TO ANOTHER FILM?• We hint at another reference from the film ‘Man On Fire’ which is the same genre as our

film (thriller/crime.) In this film there is a kidnapping of a girl, which the kidnappers then demand a large amount of ransom money for the girls release, which is the exact same to our film apart from a man is kidnapped.

• Also in Man On Fire, there are a lot of phone calls throughout the film, which the kidnappers attempt to arrange a price and a place for the ransom money to be given, which is what also happens in a scene in our film.

• We also hint at an aspect used in this film as we use text over shots in our film, which is what happens in Man On Fire.

• In our film we also use the aspect of the horror/thriller film ‘Cabin In The Woods. In our film we show a scene of Jason in the room being watched by a camera, obviously someone is watching him. The occurs in Cabin In The Woods, as there is a scene which shows people watching other people on monitors.

WHAT KINDS OF AUDIENCE PLEASURE ARE YOU TRYING TO PROVIDE AND HOW CONFIDENT ARE YOU THAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED THIS? SEE PICTURES THAT ARE NUMBERED ON LAST SLIDE.

• RICHARD DYER THEORY OF UTOPIA (Five key audience pleasures.)1. Energy: We have included certain scenes within our film that include energy and lots of movements that’s fast paced, to keep the audience excited and also to give them energy while watching. During the film you can see the kidnappers (Dale) trying to hide from someone, as he wants to get the ransom money, therefore he runs to hide behind cars, this is quite a fast paced scene, that includes a lot of energy and movement, to keep the audience interested.2. Abundance: This means their must be excess of something used in a film, therefore in our film the excess of an object is the money. By having money as the abundance of our film, this supports the conventions of a crime thriller genre, and also money is a big object, therefore the audience will always be aware and intrigued to see what is going to happen with the money.3. Intensity: This is when the audience feel tense and maybe have adrenaline rushes while watching the film. The main excitement and tense part of our film, is the fact the audience don’t know who the kidnapper is, as we don’t show his face when he speaks, therefore this can lead to the audience becoming intrigued and also excited to for the revealing of the kidnapper.

WHAT KINDS OF AUDIENCE PLEASURE ARE YOU TRYING TO PROVIDE AND HOW CONFIDENT ARE YOU THAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED THIS?• 4. Transparency: We give the idea at the beginning of our film, that life is

simple and easy going, as the beginning scene shows two friends walking together laughing and joking. However the film later shows that life isn’t straight forward, which looks beyond the first scene of simplicity, as later on in the film, life gets a lot more complicated for Jason.

• 5. Community: Dyer states in a film people must have friends or family, whether its at the end/middle/beginning. In the middle of our film when Jason needs help the most he calls his brother, explaining what's happening and that he needs his help urgently. Jason's brother straight away is there for him, which gives the audience a sense of relief of happiness that Jason has someone to help in his difficult situation.
