ThefreeeventtakesplaceatTCC’sCenterforEconomic&WorkforceDevelopmentfrom9a.m.to2p.m.Thejobfair,aprojectoftheEDC’sFirstFocusonLocalBusinessexistingindustrycollaborative,willconnectpotentialemployeeswithmanufacturingcompaniesinLeon,Gadsden,JeffersonandWakulla counties.
Jobseekersattendingthefairwillbeabletomeetwithrepresentativesfromareamanufacturingcompaniesandgatherinformationonbothproductionandprofessionalpositions,TCCofficialssaid.
“Webelievethisjobfairisatremendousbenefittothecommunityandtomanufacturingemployers,”saidBethMannPace,manufacturingtechnologyprojectmanageratTCC.“Itisagreatopportunitytolinkemployerswithrecentgraduatesandmotivatedjobseekerslookingforpositionsinthemanufacturingfield.”
Todate,TCChassecuredparticipationfromeightcompaniesforthisyear’sjobfair,allofwhichwillhavetheopportunitytomeetinterestedapplicants.Ineachoftheprevioustwoyears,thejobfairhasprovedtobeawayofdiscoveringqualifiedapplicants.Asaresult,someoftheparticipatingcompanies,includingGeneralDynamicsLandSystems,arereturningtotheeventforthethirdtime.
“Thejobfairisagreatwaytoconnectwithlocaltalent,andweappreciateourpartnershipwithTCC,”saidRobCowan,humanresourcemanageratGeneralDynamicsLandSystems.“Thisrelationshiphasresultedinconnectinguswithnumerousqualifiedemployees.”
TravisYelverton,theEDC’sdirectorofexistingindustry
development,seesgreatbenefitinthejobfairaswell.
“Thecontinuedinterestthatemployersshowbyparticipatinginthejobfairreflectsnotonlythequalityofapplicants,butalsothequalityofemploymentthesecompaniescontributetoourareawithgoodwagesandbenefits,”Yelvertonsaid.“Themanufacturingsectorisakeycomponentinthegrowthofourlocaleconomy.”

“Neverforget.”That’sthemessageholocaustsurvivorsacrosstheworldcontinuetoimparttoyoungergenerations.Oct.27,onesurvivorhelpedlocalteachersunderstandtheimportanceofspreadingthe“neverforget”messagetostudents.ABC27’sDavidTaylorinvestigates.
InaTallahasseeCommunityCollegeconferenceroom,educatorsgatheredtohearthestoryofLislBogart.AsateenagerinCzechoslovakia,BogartwastakentotheconcentrationcampatTerezintheVillage,theNazi’sinfamouslyusedtoshowtheinternationalRedCrossthatgenocidewasnothappening.BogartescapeddeathonmanyoccasionsatTerezin,buttherestofherfamilywasmurdered.
“Becausethehatredisstillthere,it’sgoingonallovertheworld.WehaveDarfurandotherincidentswhereprejudiceandhatredareinplay.Whatwewitnessedandwhatwelivedthroughwedon’twanttoeverhappentoanybody,”saidBogart.
“Therearemanydifferentpeopleallovertheworldandtherearemanywaysweneedtodealwitheachotheranddealwithproblems,andtoaccepteverybodyasahumanbeing.Andeverybodyhasarighttobehereonthisplanet,”saidJaronLawson,RickardsHighSchoolteacher.
Asasurvivor,Bogartbearswitnesstowhathatredandprejudicecando.And,onbehalfofthemillionswhowerelost,sheasksteacherstocontinueherworkofpromotingcompassionandhumanrightsandtoneverforget.
“Evenattheelementarylevelit’staughtthattheyspeakoutforwhat’scorrect,tobeagoodfriend.Andsoit’sneverreallytooearlytostartlearningthis,”saidRitaBlank,HolocaustEducationResourceCouncil.
“That’soneofthethingswewanttoteach,wewanttoshowthemwhatcanhappenifyoucontinuetofollowthecrowd,nottakeastandanddotherightthingitcanendupwithadisastrouseffect,”saidAllen.

TALLAHASSEE,Fla.(November19,2008)-AspecialworkforceinterventionfundwascreatedonMonday,November17,bytheTallahasseeCommunityCollegeDistrictBoardofTrusteesinresponsetoseverelayoffsinGadsdenCounty.
Thenewinitiativeallowsforupto$50,000tobeallocatedforathree-partproposalthatoffersassistancetothedisplacedworkers.Firstandforemost,theCollegewillprovideaccesstotheQuickJobTrainingProgramatnocosttotheseindividuals.Secondly,theprogramismovingtowardswaystomakethecoursesavailabletonon-Englishspeakers.Lastly,effortswillcontinuetoenhanceworkforcepreparationthroughGEDclassesandReadytoWorkprograms.
“WeareworkingcloselywithourpartnersattheGadsdenCountySchoolBoard,WORKFORCEplusandtheGadsdenEconomicDevelopmentCounciltoensurethatweserveasmanypeopleinanefficientandexpeditiousfashion,”saidDr.JohnChapin,TCCVicePresidentofEconomic&WorkforceDevelopment.
InAugust,TallahasseeCommunityCollegelauncheditsQuickJobTrainingProgramasawayofofferingquickandaffordabletrainingfordisplacedandunder-employedworkersinaseriesofin-demandjobs.Fromclassesforhealthandinformationtechnologyoccupationstothoseinalternativeenergyandconstruction,theQuickJobTrainingProgramhasenjoyedtremendoussuccess.AccordingtoTCCofficials,89percentofthosewhocompletedtheircourseseitherretainedemploymentorupgradedexisting skills.
ThenextseriesofQuickJobTrainingclassesisscheduledtobegininJanuary2009.Classescanbecompletedin90daysorless,manycarrynationalcertificationandeachpersonwhocompletesacoursewillbeofferedtheReadytoWorkcredentialaspartofthepackage.

ThisweekTallahasseeCommunityCollegeannouncedthatitspopularTech@NightseriesofclassesstartsupJan.6.Theone-nightworkshopscost$25andtakeplaceateachTCCcampus.Theycoverthelatestsoftwareandcomputertopics,soyougetachancetobrushuponyourskillsorperhapsgetanintroductiontoabrand-newprogram.
Toitscredit,TCCunderstandsthedynamicsofthejobmarketandwheretrainingneedstobedirected.Otherworkforce-developmentagenciesinourcommunityaredialedintothesamefrequency.Alltheireffortswillbemorecriticalinthemonthsaheadbecauseworkerswillbesearchingforawaytoretoolinpreparationforanotherjobormaybeevenanewcareer.

“Ithasbeenverydifficultbecauseoftheeconomyandalsoalotofotherfactorsaswell.Withalotofthecompaniesthatarelayingoffpeopleonadailybasis,Ithinkit’smakingitevenharderforpeopletofindemploymentrightnow,”saidMonicamelton, who is looking for a job.

DannyWagner,19,haswhatpeoplealloverthecountryareseeking—aninvitationtofestivitiesforthepresidentialinauguration in January.
WagnerreceivedhisinvitationbackinMarch—longbeforeBarackObamabecamePresident-elect.HetookpartintheNationalLeadershipForumwhilehewasajuniorinhighschoolandappliedtotakepartinaconferencefortheinauguration.The conference will be one of many going on in the nation’s capital.
AccordingtotheNationalYouthLeadershipForumWebsite,thenon-profitwasfoundedasan“independent,educationalorganizationestablishedtohelpprepareextraordinaryyoungpeoplefortheirprofessionalcareers.”
Asainaugurationconferenceattendee,WagnerwillgettohearkeynotespeakerslikeLanceArmstrongandColinPowell.Heisn’tsureifhewillgetachancetomeetthePresident-Elect.However,thewholereasonWagnerwantedtoapplyfortheconferencewastogetastep-uponhisfuture.
Wagner,aMarinereservist,hopestoonedayworkinintelligenceforthefederalgovernment.
“Iwantedtonetworkandmakeanimpression,”hesaidabouthisplansfortheconference.
ThestatementperfectlydescribesWagner’spersonality,saidhismother.GinnyWagner,ateacherofdentalhygieneatTallahasseeCommunityCollege.Shesaidhersonisonewhochiselsatagoaluntilitisachieved.Buthe’snoType-Apersonality,shesaid.

“UnitedNationsisimportantininternationalpoliticsandalsotherelationsbetweencountries.SowearetryingtoemphasizethepeacefulrelationsbetweenthosecountriesinChinawithChinesestudentsandinternationalstudents,”saidBugraDemirel,theTCCModelUnitedNationspresident.

AtTuesday’spreviewperformance,watchingtheplaywasakintodrawingupabig,comfychairtothefireandlisteningtothebelovedtaleofthehauntingofEbenezerScroogefortheveryfirsttime.MuchofthatdeliciousthrillisduetothetheatricaladaptationofDickens’1843novellabyA.ThomasCavano.CavanohasliftedchunksofDickens’spryprosedirectlyfromthebook,anditmaycomeasasurprisetothosewho’veneveractuallyreadthe“ghostlylittlebook”thataimsto“raisetheGhostofanIdea”howwarm,funnyandmovingtheoriginalis.
Someadaptationshaveerredonthesideofsentimentality,whichmostlikelywouldhaveappalledtheaugustauthor.Hisaimwastocelebratethedignity,resilienceandcompassionofthehumanspirit,andalsotogentlyprickthepublicconscienceregardingthelessfortunatemembersofVictoriansociety.Dickenswasnevermawkishanddidn’tseektoglorifypoverty.Hesimplygavethehumblercharactersinhistalesawealthofinnerstrengthandgoodhumorthatmadethemappealingandreal.
DirectorKrystofKagehastakenthesameapproachwithhisactors,whobroughtawealthofgoodcheertotheendeavoronTuesdaynight.AssistantdirectorDerekNieveswasatreatasDickens,whoservedasanomniscientnarratorfortheaction onstage.
AsthecrustyoldmiserScrooge,LandonHughescomplainedandmuttered“Bah,humbug”withcrabbyconviction,whichmadehiseventualtransformationevenmorewondrous.CalebThomaswasawonderful,fresh-facedBobCratchit,Scrooge’smuchput-uponandabusedclerk.

With2009rightaroundthecorner,collegesarealreadygearingupfornewG.I.Billforpost9-11veterans.In2007,theU.S.DepartmentofVeteranAffairssaidmorethan500,000veteransusedthecurrentG-IBillforeducationassistance.
TheNEWG.I.Bill,goingintoaffectinAugustof2009,issaidtohaveanimprovedpackageofeducationalbenefitsandmore.SchoolssuchasTallahasseeCommunityCollegesaytheyareansweringquestionsaboutthebillonadailybasis.
DeloriseRobinson,withT.C.C.’sVeteransAffairsDepartmentsaid,“Theinterestisthere,butwedon’thavethefullfactsyetanduntilwegetthosefactsin,theonlythingwecantellthemthatitiscominganditisgoingtobeabetterbillthansomeoftheG.I.billsthatthey’reonnow.”

Morethantwodozenpeoplewithbackgroundsinworkforceandeconomicdevelopment,governmentandsocialservicesmettoplantheassistance.

DavidGardner,executivedirectoroftheGadsdenCountyChamberofCommerce,hassaidthatlosing500jobswillbedevastatingtoGadsdenCounty,butit’simportanttoseekreplacementcompaniestodiffusetheblowoflosingthecounty’sbiggestbusiness,amushroomgrowingandpackingcompany.
OnMonday,Gardnersaidthechamberiscontinuingtogatherinformationaboutthelandandbuildingintheeventanotherbusinessisinterestedinpurchasingtheproperty.
“TheattitudefromSylvanisitwillbeanassetsale,”GardnersaidofthecompanythatownsQuincyFarms.“Wearelookingatanyandallopportunities,includingmushroomsoragribusiness.”
Manyideaswerebandiedaboutduringthe55-minutemeeting, but one of the most concrete is the Quick Job Training programatTallahasseeCommunityCollege.JohnChapin,TCCvicepresidentofeconomicandworkforcedevelopment,saidthe$50,000allocatedspecificallyforformerQuincyFarmsemployeesmayhelpthetrainingprogramdevelopcoursesinSpanish.

Inthisgovernmenttownwhereouruniversitiesandstateagencieskeepourworkforcerelativelystableifnotwealthy,somepeople,unbelievably,haveyettorealizethatmanyofoursmallerprivatebusinessesandself-employedpeoplearestruggling — with little relief in sight.
Ourhistoricinsulationisgone;locallyourunemploymentfiguresareamongthehighesttheBigBendhaseverseen,saidKimMooreofWorkforcePlus.
InLeonCounty,unemploymentisnowat4.9percent;Wakulla’sat5.2percent;Jefferson’sat5.5percent;andGadsden’sat6.8percent.Allthenumbersareatleast2percentagepointshigherthanayearago.
Talentedmenandwomenwholaborinthebuildingtrades,forexample,aredependingonaneconomicturnaroundthatdoesn’tseemtobeonthehorizon.Employeesofsmallbusinesses — stores, services, restaurants that are having to cutexpenses—areanxious,evenifemployedforthetimebeing,toseewhatthenewyearholds.
Thebiggestsinglejob-lossstrikehasoccurredinGadsdenCounty,wherethefirstof19employeesofQuincyFarms,whichproduces15millionto20millionpoundsofmushroomsannually,arebeinglaidoffinthenextfewdays.
Atotalof490peoplewillbelaidoffinallbySylvanInc.,whichownsQuincyFarmsandisshuttingdownentirelyinJanuary.Thoughthecompanyistryingtogetpeoplethroughtheholidays,accordingtoexecutivevicepresidentDanLucovich,hesaidthedecisiontoendproductiontherehasbeen“extremelyhard.”
WeappreciatetheworkthatTallahasseeCommunityCollegeisdoingnow,investing$50,000inaquick-jobtrainingcoursesthroughitsWorkforceDevelopmentProgram.ItwilldevelopcoursesinSpanishwiththeGadsdenCountyworkersinmind.Andwhiletherearenojobguarantees,individualswillbetrainedforin-demandjobslikeheavyequipmentoperators,electriciansandplumbers’helpers.
CoordinatingwithWorkforcePlus,TCCandotherorganizationsmayhelpsoftentheblowandthetransitionforthosewhowillbeseekingotherworkinthisregion,includingnearbytownssuchasCairo,Ga.,whereagoodmanyHispanicworkersareemployedinalargecommercialnursery,manufacturingandregionalfooddistributionplants.
Thehumanfalloutisbrutal;moresobecauseoureconomyhadbeensostrongforquitesometime.Itseemshardtoimaginenow,butformanyyears,thecapitalcityhashadthereputationofbeinguninterestedingrowth.
Butgrowthhasalwaysbeenfundamentallyaboutcreatingjobs.Goodjobsquitesimplyhelppeopleorganizetheirlivessotheycanfeed,clotheandeducatetheirchildren,maintainahomeand,inturn,supportandgivebacktotheircommunity.
Ofcourseyouwantgrowththatsustainsitself;thatis,wedon’twanttokillthegoosethatlaysthegoldenegg—herethatmeansthebeautyandqualityoflifeandenvironmentthatdrawandholdpeople.

DuetoTech@Night’ssuccess,TCCcontinuestoexpandcourseofferings,basedonthemostsoughtafterskills.Participantscantakeeitherasingleworkshoporanentireseriestogainthenecessaryskills.
“Thisprogramofferssomethingforeveryone,”saidBeverlySmith,Tech@Nightcoordinator.“It’sfortheindividualwhowantstolearnmoreaboutcomputers,theemployerwhowantstoupgradeemployeeskillsandtheemployeewhowantstoimproveskillsforacurrentorfuturejob.”

Toqualifyfortheaward,TCCdeclareditsintenttousegrantfundingtoimproveaccessto,orparticipationin,postsecondaryeducation,collegeretentionandstudentsuccess,withaspecialemphasisontheproject’sbenefittonontraditional/adultlearnerswhoarefromlow-tomoderate-incomefamiliesandareatleast24yearsold.
“ThegoalofthisprojectistoimproveaccesstopostsecondaryeducationbyestablishingapilotprogramatTCCtoassistnontraditional/adultlearnersbyawardingatleast100scholarshipsofupto$2,000each,”saidDr.BillLaw,TCCPresident.“TG’sgenerousinvestmentwillhaveastrong,positiveinfluenceontheeducationofthesestudents,andtheenrichmentofourcommunity.”

“Ournation’sfuturedependsonourabilitytoinspirestudentstoachieveallthatthey’recapableofaccomplishing,”saidSueMcMillin,presidentandCEOofTG,aTexas-based,nonprofitcorporationthatprovidesfederalstudentloanguaranteestohelpensureaccesstohighereducationformillionsofstudentsacrossthecountryeachyear.“We’repleasedthatTGcanhelpchangethefutureforindividualstudents,familiesandsocietyasawholebyprovidingfundsfortheTCCprogramfornontraditional/adultlearners.”
TheTCCFoundationisoneof53nonprofitorganizationsselectedforfunding.Overall,TGawardedmorethan$5.6millionforprojectsin2008-2009.
TCCwillprovidesupportservicestoscholarshiprecipientsto
strengthentheiracademicsuccess.EachrecipientwillmeetwithaTCCadvisertodevelopanIndividualizedLearningPlanthatidentifiesthestudent’sacademicgoalsandaneffectivestrategytoachievethesegoals.Eachstudent’sprogresswillbetrackedthroughTCC’sinnovativestudentportalsystem,andthestudentwillalsobeenrolledinTCC’sCollegeSuccesscourse,whichnearlydoublesastudent’schancesofgraduationaccordingtotheCollege’sresearch.
Scholarshiprecipientsmustbe24yearsofageandolderandhaveanExpectedFamilyContribution(EFC)over$4,140fortheFederalPellGrantandFloridaStudentAssistanceGranteligibility.StudentswhoareinterstedshouldcompletetheFreeApplicationforFederalStudentAid(FAFSA)tohavetheirEFCdetermined.TCCwillbegingivingeligiblestudentsawardsbeginningwiththeSpring2009semesterthatstartsinJanuary.

The$18milliongrantistoprovidestudentsinsixththrough12thgradeswithearlycollegeawarenessandpreparationactivitiesin10schoolsthroughoutLeon,GadsdenandJeffersoncounties.TheprogramisknownastheGearUpGrantandit’sdesignedtoexposestudentstoadvanced-placementandInternationalBaccalaureate(IB)classes.
“It’sgoingtohelppreparestudentstoenterorsucceedinsometypeofpostsecondaryeducation,”saidIrisWilson,theFloridaDepartmentofEducation’sdeputychancellorofstudentachievement.
Wilsonservesastheprogram’sprojectdirector.ShesaidthecompetitivegrantreceivedfortheGearUpProgramisconsideredaflagshipprogramoftheU.S.DepartmentofEducation.

HouseDemocraticleaderFranklinSandsendedhissilencewithapolitebutfirmpressrelease.
“Ourcaucusmembersaretroubledbynewsaccountsthatsuggestthenormalandopenbudgetproceduresmaynothavebeenfollowedinsomecircumstancesinthelasttwoyears,”Sandssaid.“Wedonotaimtoembarrassacolleague.Butwethinkthespeakershouldaddressthesereports.Iflefttofester,theallegationsmaycastahazeovertheLegislatureanditswork.”
ItcameinthewakeofthelatestrevelationsinaweekendstorybytheMiamiHerald/St.PetersburgTimes.CitingHousee-mail,thepapersreportedthatSansomworkedbehindthesceneswithNorthwestFloridaStateCollegePresidentBobRichburgtosuppresspublicattendanceatameetingbetweenlawmakersandtheschool’sboardoftrustees.

AspokeswomanforSansomdidnotrespondtorequestsforaninterview.Richburgsaidearlierthismonththattherewasnoquidproquoandthatthejoboffercouldnothavebeendiscussedatthetimebecausetheopeningonlyoccurredafterthe legislative session.
Sansom,whohasamaster’sdegreeineducation,isqualifiedforthejob,Richburgsaid.
SansomandRichburgalsopushedacontroversialbillthatexpandedtheabilityofcommunitycollegestoofferfour-yeardegrees.
ThebillputNorthwestFloridaStateCollegeandtwoothersatthecenterofapilotprogram.Sixothercommunitycolleges,includingEdisonCommunityCollegeinFortMyers,eventuallyjoinedin.Notallcollegeswereconvinceditwasagoodidea.
TallahasseeCommunityCollegePresidentBillLawsaidMondaythatheattendedaMarch13meetingwithSansomandahandfulofotherpresidents,butwasnotinterestedinjoiningthepilotprogram.
TCCstudentsalreadyhaveeasyaccesstoFloridaStateUniversity,andLawstillthinksit’sabetterideaforhisschooltostick to its core mission.
“it’s a little unfortunate about the controversy because it’s a worthypolicydiscussion,”Lawsaid.
PensacolaJuniorCollegeformerpresidentTomDelanoalsodidnotsupporttheideaanddidnotattendthemeeting,saidMartinGonzalez,aninterimvicepresident.Recently,theschoolbeganconsideringwhethertoofferabaccalaureatedegreeinitsnursingprogram,Gonzalezsaid.

WASHINGTON—President-electBarackObamahaspromisedtogothroughthebudgetofeachfederalagencywithafine-toothcomb,andthatgetsfiscalconservativeslikeRep.AllenBoydexcited.
Infact,pledgesmadebytheincomingadministrationremindhimofthelasttimeaDemocratoccupiedtheWhiteHouse.
“TheClintonadministrationwentinandcuteveryagencytherewas.Governmentspendingactuallydeclined.Mostpeoplehaveforgottenthat,butthenumbersspeakforthemselves,”saidBoyd,aMonticelloDemocrat.“Whenyoucutspending,yougaintheconfidenceoftheAmericanpeoplethatyou’vegotanefficientgovernmentdoingwhatit’ssupposedtobedoinganddoingitwell.”
BoydexpressedoptimismthatObamawillsetatoneinWashingtonthatwillencouragecooperationandproductivityfrombothpartiesinCongress.
“Wedidn’thavethatinthelasttwoyears,whenwe’vehadadividedgovernment,”hesaid,referringtotheRepublicanWhiteHouseandtheDemocrat-controlledCongress.Thatshows,hesaid.
Congressiswrappingupayearthatwillbemostrememberedforthenumerousfinancialbailoutpackagesandadearthofanyothertypeofbill.
Federallawmakersbegantheyearonanoptimisticnote,supportinglegislationintendedtostimulatetheeconomythroughrebatecheckstotaxpayers.However,recipientsfailedtospendtheextramoneyashoped,forcingCongressintorescuemode,firsttryingtosavestrugglinghomeowners,thenthefinancialindustryandfinally,domesticautomobilemakers.
Althoughheconsideredthebillflawed,Boydvotedforahistoric$700billionmeasuretorescuethefinancialsector.However,heopposeda$14billionloanpackageforthenation’stopthreeautomakers.
“You’vegotanindustrygettingwaxedbycompetitorsaroundtheworld,becausetheircostofproductionandwhatthey’reproducingisdifferentfromwhatitshouldbe.Andthemarket’sgottoworkthatoutforthem,notthegovernment,”hesaid.
Althoughcriticshavedescribedthecongressionalyearaslongonbailoutsandshortonanyothertypeofbill,Boydtouted
severalHouseaccomplishmentsthataffectedNorthFlorida,including:
$8.5millioninappropriationsforvariousmilitary-relatedresearchprojectsconductedbyFloridaStateUniversity.
$12.4millionforsimilarnationaldefense-relatedprojectsatFloridaA&MUniversity.
$11.6millionfortheconstructionofanewAirControlSquadronOperationsTrainingComplexatTyndallAirForceBase.
$800,000millionforTallahasseeCommunityCollegetoestablishaManufacturingandIndustrialTechnologyCenter.BoydacknowledgedCongresspuntedotherbig-ticketbudgetitemssuchashealthcareandSocialSecurityissuestothenextyear.

AftergraduatingfromFSUin1997,hewashiredasaTCCcommunicationsspecialist.Inthatroleheworkedonnon-
athleticandathleticpublicrelations.HisexperienceworkingwithathleticsatTCCledhimtopursueamaster’sdegreethroughtheFSUsportsadministrationprogram.
HedidsowhileworkingatTCC,andhegraduatedfromthatprogramin2001.Shortlythereafter,attheageof28,hewaspromotedtoathleticdirector.
ThroughAnweiler’s17yearsatTCC,theEagleshavechangedcoachesandathleticdirectorsseveraltimes.InfacttheonlyheadcoachremainingonstafffromAnweiler’sfirstyearatTCC(1992)isbaseball’sMikeMcLeod.
“He’sarealsupportiveguy,”McLeodsaid.“Youneverfeltanythingbutthat.Andhereallyhadthestudentfirstinhismind.
“Itwasn’taboutwinsandlosseswithhim.Itwas,‘WhatcanIdotohelpyou,tomakelifemorecomfortable?’”
Unliketheathleticdirectorsatfour-yearuniversitieswhosupervisecoaches,theTCCpositionismoreadministrativeinnature.Inhisposition,Anweilerhandledscholarshipadministration,academiceligibility,mediarelations,travelplanning,andotheroffice-relatedduties.

ReplacingAnweilerwillbeRobChaney,alsoaformervolunteerhelperandnowTCCcommunicationsspecialist.ChaneyandAnweilerworkedtogetherfor10years.
“He’skindoflikethemayor,”Chaneysaid.“Everybodyknowshim.
“He’sgonetheextramiletohelpthecoaches’jobsaloteasier.Hetakesontheburdenofthegruntworkthatwouldoccupytheirtime.Nottodotheirjob,buttobeextrahandsandfeetsotheycanfocusonthecoachingaspect.”
ForAnweiler,ithasbeenallpartofthejob.
“Ikindofviewedmyroleasmakingsurethetrainsranontime,makingsureeverythinggoessmoothly,”hesaid.“Ijustwanttosupportthecoachesinwhattheydoandseethembesuccessfulandseethestudentsgraduate,moveon,gettheirfour-yeardegree,beonthenationalstage,andjustexcel.”
OvertheyearshehelpedestablishtheTCCHallofFameandtheTCCAthleticDepartmentGolfTournamentfundraiser.Thoughheneverplayedcollegeorhighschoolathletics,hesaysaccompanyingTCCteamstotheirrespectivenationaltournamentsasmemorable moments.
“Believeitornot,I’mnottheworld’sbiggestsportsfan,”hesaid.“ButIlikedhelpingstudentsandbeingaroundstudents.”
But17yearsisalongtime,andhesaidit’sjusttimetoleave.NothingconfirmedthatmoreforAnweilerthanthecommentsofaTCCpoliceofficer.
“Ialwaysseeyouwalkingaround,”theofficertoldAnweiler.“It’snotgoingtobethesame.

Hallsaidadministratorsbegantoseeenrollmentincreasesbeforethecollegeclosedforwinterbreak.However,thepopulationboomputsadministratorsinacompromisingpositionofprovidingasmanyclassesaspossibleduringatimeofseverebudgetcuts.
“Acrossthestate,communitycollegeenrollmentcontinuestogrow,especiallyinthefaceofsevereeconomictimes,”TCCPresidentBillLawsaid.“WhileweatTCCremainfirmlycommittedtokeepingtheopendooropen,IhavesomeconcernsaboutbeingabletomeetindividualneedsaswegettothestartofthesemesterinJanuary.”
LawsaidgrowthatthelevelTCCisseeing“willchallengeevenourbestefforts.”
Headdedthatadministratorsareworkingtocreateflexibleclassschedules,includingexpandedonlinecourseofferings,toaccommodatewhatwillperhapsberecordenrollment.Thecollege’sstudentpopulationhasexceeded14,000inpastsemesters.
Asofthemiddleofthemonth,morethan10,600studentshadregisteredforthespringsemester.

Whilethestate’sfiscalcrisiscouldforceFloridaStateUniversitytolayoffmorethan200membersofitsfacultyandstaff,BillLawdoesnotexpectanylayoffsatTallahasseeCommunityCollege.
Law,TCC’spresident,saidthatbecausetheschoolwasproactiveandtrimmeditsbudgetby$2.32million—or7.5percent—inSeptember,itiswellpositionedtoendurewhateverhappensduringthecurrentlegislativesession.
“Wehavenotlaidoffanyoneandwehavemadeacommitmenttonotdothat,”Lawsaid.“I’mverycomfortablewithwhatI’mseeing.Thatcommitmentisverystrongthroughtheendofthisyear.”
TheLegislature,meetinginaspecialsessiontoattempttoclosea$2.3billionrevenueshortage,hastargetededucationasoneofthe areas for cuts.
“Nobodyfeelsgoodaboutanyofthis,”Lawsaid.“Wehaven’theardthefinalnewsoncommunitycolleges.

WhenPastorRickWarrenwasinvitedtogivetheinvocationatPresident-ElectBarack obama’s Jan. 20 inauguration, gaysandothersontheleftraisedaloudandvociferouschorusofprotestaboutWarren’soppositiontogaymarriageandabortion.
Someontherightwerealsooffended— they say Warren isn’t conservative enoughandshouldn’tsharethestagewithsomeonewhosupportsawoman’sright to choose.
It’sexactlythatkindofpoliticalpolarizationthatLizJoynerandTheVillageSquare,thegroupshehelpedfound,hopetobreak.Formorethana year, Joyner has brought Democrats andRepublicanstogethereveryquarterfordinnerandwhatshecalls“civilized”conversation—noname-callingandyellingallowed,justthoughtful,engageddiscussion.
AtTuesday’sdinner,abipartisanpanelwilltackleaparticularlythornytopic:FaithinthePublicSquare.
“We seem to be living in a time when we’vestoppedtalkingtopeoplewedisagreewith...andwearen’thavinggoodconversationsaboutthingsthatmatter,”Joynersaid.“Ithinkwecandobetterthanthat.”
OnTuesday,Joynersaid,sheisgoingtotellthepaneliststofightliketheFoundingFathers.

“Wecomefromdifferentplaces,butwerealizedthatjustsittingdowntogetherwithourtalkingpointswasn’tgoingtogetusanywhere,”saidKatz,whowillactasmoderatorforTuesday’spaneldiscussion.“Wehadtobewillingtoreally listen to what the other one was saying.”
LeaMarshall,aRepublicanwhohasattendedallofTheVillageSquaredinners,saidshegoestolistentothespeakersshesupports.Butsheoftencomes away with some truth from the otherside.
Duringthelastdinner,forexample,whichtookplacebeforetheelection,onespeakersaidthatpeoplewhobelievethatonly“theirguy”couldsavethecountrywerevergingonidolatry.
“Thatmademelookattheelectiondifferently,”Marshallsaid.“Thetake-homelessondidn’tcomefromthepersonIoriginallywenttohear.”
KenConnor,oneofTuesday’spanelists,saiditwasimportanttocreateacalmatmospherewherepeoplehaveachance to listen to the merits of an argument. Connor, an attorney, is the formerpresidentofFloridaRighttoLifeandtheauthorof“SinfulSilence:WhenChristiansNeglectTheirCivicDuty.”
“Ifthevolumeisloudandthefaceisred,thereislittleopportunitytoconvinceandpersuadeoneanother,”Connorsaid.“SoundstomelikewhatTheVillageSquareissayingis‘Look,wewantpeopletohaveequalaccesstothemarketplaceofideas.’Ithinktheoutcomeofthatdiscussionwilldemonstratethatsomeideasarebetterthanothers.”

Anationwiderecessionshouldnotstopanyonefromgettinganeducation,saysWilliamK.Spiers,directoroffinancialaidatTallahassee Community College.
ProofofthatwillbeprovidedattheannualScholarshipFairtodayfrom5:30to7:30p.m.intheTCCStudentUnionBallroom.
Thecollegehas$39milliontoawardtoeligiblestudentsinterestedinpursuinghighereducation.Despitethecountry’seconomicissues,Spierssaidtheschoolhasmoremoneyavailablethisyearthanlastyear.
“Theamountofmoneyisprettystable,”hesaid.
Spierssaidheexpectstherecessionwillcauseanincreaseinpeopleattendingeventsliketoday’sfair.
“Wehaveabout65percentofourstudentscurrentlyreceivingaid,”hesaid.“Wedoexpectalargernumberofpeopleapplyingbecausetheirfamiliesareinneedofthefundstoattendschool.Therewillprobablybepeoplefromdifferenteconomicbackgroundsthanwe’veseeninthepast.”
GiorvanniMerilis,19,apastrecipientoftheSTEMStarscholarship,encourageshisfellowstudentstoseekscholarshipopportunities.“Iusedtowork,andIrealizethatthescholarshipsreallyhelpoutfinancially,”Merilissaid.

TheKnightFoundation’scommitmenttomakingTallahasseeavibrantcommunityforyoungprofessionalsjustbecameahalf-milliondollarsmoreserious.
AnewinstituteisbeingcreatedatTallahasseeCommunityCollege,thankstoafive-year,$570,000KnightFoundationgrant.
Itisanout-growthoftheKnightCreativeCommunitiesInstitute,whichproducedtheyear-oldTallahasseeFilmFestival,theenvironmentalgroupSustainableTallahasseeandtheGetGainesGoingproject.
MikePate,thenationalKnightFoundation’sprogramdirectorforTallahassee,explainedataThursdaynewsconferenceattheTCCCapitolCenterthatthenewinstitute’sgoalistocomeupwithwaystoretaincollegegraduates.
“Wedon’twantthemtobeourNo.1export,”Patesaid.“TheKnightCreativeCommunitiesInstitutewillbeacornerstoneofourwork,bycreatingasenseofplaceinthecommunitythatwillattractandretaincollegegraduatesandyoungprofessionals.”
Apart-timeexecutivedirectorandanadministratorassistantwillbehiredtorunthenewinstitute.Itwon’tbegintotakeshapeuntilSeptember,when30orsocommunitymemberstakepartinaseriesofworkshopsdesignedtogivetheinstituteanidentity.
ThisissimilartothewaytheKCCI’sfirstprogramtookrootin2007.
Theinstitutewillbechargedwithlaunchingthreetofourprojectseachyearoverafive-yearperiod,Patesaid.
“It’sagreatopportunityfortheKnightFoundation,it’sagreatopportunityforTallahasseeCommunityCollege,butit’sanespeciallygreatopportunityfortheTallahasseecommunity,”Pateadded.
TCCwasselectedasthesitefortheinstitute,accordingtoTCCPresidentBillLaw,becauseitiswell-suitedtoprovideadministrativeandothersupportservices.TCCisalsothehostinstitutionforWholeChildLeon,amongothercommunityorganizations.
“Thisisagoodroleforacommunitycollege,havingasupportrole,”Lawsaid.“TheKnightFoundationhasdoneawholehandfulforthiscommunity,butthisgrantgivesussomecontinuityoveranumberofyears.”
Someyoungprofessionalsweredecidedlyupbeatwhentoldaboutthegrantandnewinstitute.
“Thisissuchanimportantdevelopmentforourorganization,aswellasforthefutureofTallahassee,”saidValerieWickboldt,public-relationsandmarketingchairfortheTallahasseeNetworkofYoungProfessionals.“Retainingandattractingtalentedyoungprofessionalsprovesimperativeforacommunity’ssuccessandsustainability.
“Weareexcitedtoseetheresultsandwillsurelyfinditbeneficialtousinourplanning.”
AprilBrown,aboardmemberwithTallahassee25,anall-volunteernonprofitthathelpsunderprivilegedyouthinthecommunity,welcomesmorewaysforcollegegraduatestoconnectwiththeareabeyondtheuniversities.
“IdefinitelythinkthatforyoungprofessionalsinTallahassee,unlessyou’rereallycommittedtogettinginvolved,itcanbedifficult,”shesaid.“Anywaytomakeitlesscomplicatedandmoreobviousforyoungprofessionalsinthecommunityisawesome.”
