    IN THE ZONE

Hello USAG Red Cloud and Area I Community Members.

Much occurred during the month of October, not the least of which was the Government Shutdown that impacted several Family and MWR programs and services. Unfortunately we had to cancel the Fall Festival at Camp Stanley and postponed the FMWR Expo 13. We are hoping to reschedule the FMWR Expo sometime in the Spring. We had the Operation Rising Star Finals, which resulted in some fantastic fun

for everyone who attended. We had the Sesame Street Company pay us a visit and lastly we had the Great Aaron Tippin, Country recording star perform an unforgettable concert. The Halloween Events at each of our major Camps Camp Red Cloud, Camp Casey and Camp Stanley provided great fun for both children and adults.

In terms of Family Support; Army Community Services (ACS) hosted the Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) Conference. The AFAP conference vetted many concerns from our community members that were important. Issues raised during the conference are now in the hands of the Area I Garrison Commander and his Sta who are working on possible solutions.

Internally to Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation, we welcome on board our newest team member Mrs. Denise von Wiecki, Chief for the Business Operations Division for Area I (responsible for the programs and services of our Clubs, Bowling Centers, Golf Courses, etc.).

At Family and MWR, we look at improving the In The Zone Magazine and the Marketing and Advertising Team are working in conjunction with AAFES to o er a monthly Area l Movie Schedule. The Marketing team also worked with ACS, to provide Spotlights for some of our Volunteer Members that provide an invaluable service to all of us!

We look forward to continuing our service to you, Our Customer, and welcome the comments you provide us through one-on-one interaction or the ICE comments system and ask you to keep them coming!

    13IN THE ZONE

  • For some, holiday meals come with joyous

anticipation and the personal satisfaction of

preparing all the various homemade dishes for

appreciative family and relatives and friends to

enjoy. For others, its that dreaded time of year that

means lots of time and frustration in the kitchen

preparing the turkey and all the trimmings, which

can take hours, if not days, to complete.

For those who would rather skip the heat of

the kitchen and all the time and effort involved in

preparing the big holiday feast, help is here. The

U.S. Army Garrison Red Could, Casey and Area l

Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation (FMWR)

Department has the answer with their popular

Holiday Meals To Go program that kicks off on

November 1st and runs until the end of the year.

Spearheaded by long time FMWR Club Manager

Avelina Richardson, manager of the Warriors Club

at Camp Casey, the Holiday Meals To Go program

this year is better than ever.

    Ive been involved in this

    very popular program for

    several years now and every

year I try to make it better.

    This year is no exception,

    Richardson says.

    We begin with turkeys

    themselves, hearty 18 to 20

pounders that our Chef Mr. Yi, Chae Kwon has

learned to cook to perfection over the years. They

come out of the oven a beautiful golden brown

and the meat is juicy and tender. Our customers

    love it, she says.

And then there are all the other holiday food

items that come with the basic $99 package that

comfortably serves up to eight people, with plenty

to go around. The Holiday Meals To Go package

includes the whole roasted turkey, dressing,

candied yams, buttered corn, green beans, mashed

potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, rolls and choice of

    pumpkin, apple or potato pie.

And if thats not enough for you, you can add 3

lbs of delicious sliced smoked ham for an additional

$20, something Richardson says many people

choose because of the added value to the overall

holiday meal package. If you like, you can get more

glazed ham ($7 per pound), turkey gravy ($2 for 16

ounces), dinner rolls ($3 per dozen), or your choice

    of pies for $9.75 each.

Sometimes a customer wants only the roast

turkey, and we can do that, no problem. We

charge $59.95 for a whole, roasted turkey thats

approximately 18 to 20 pounds, Richardson says.

So what else is new this year besides the delicious

    menu?

Richardson says its all about packaging. In

previous years customers picked up their orders

that were wrapped in foil and placed in plastic

bags, making it diffi cult to keep the food

items warm and also diffi cult to carry. This year

Richardson says each Holiday Meal To Go will be

neatly arranged in a special box designed to keep

everything fresh in an easy to carry container.

I know customers will really like this change,

    she says with a smile.

So how does one go about purchasing a Holiday

Meal To Go this holiday season?

Its easy. Just call the Camp Casey Warriors Club

at 730-2195/2193 or the Camp Red Cloud Mitchells

Club at 732-8189/8363 for more details, or better

yet, visit either club to reserve your Holiday Meal To

reservation a minimum of 3 days before the desired

pick-up date (sorry, no delivery service available).

You can place your order anytime between now

and December 27. The last Holiday Meal To Go will

be ready for pick up on December 31.

Our Holiday Meal To Go program is always

popular with Units and other on-base organizations

during November and December, Richardson says.

Whenever they have Unit or offi ce functions

they like to purchase one or more of the Holiday

Meals To Go packages because its so easy to do and

fi ts in nicely with the holiday theme, Richardson

    says.

Theres no doubt the Holiday Meals To Go

program this year will exceed the number sold

in previous years. Last year approximately 200

packages were sold at the Warriors Club alone, and

Richardson says that number will likely double this

year now that the word is out about the quality

and value, not to mention the service customers can

    expect.

Its only October and already weve had several

people make their reservations for next month,

    Richardson says.

I think well do a record business this year.

People who have purchased the Holiday Meal

To Go package before know what a good deal it

is. I highly recommend anyone interested in this

program call early to reserve their Holiday Meal To

    Go package, Richardson concluded.

Valentin Camacho has already reserved his

Holiday Meal To Go from the Warriors Club

this year and is glad he did.

Ive been purchasing them for years

and enjoy it very much, he tells In The

    Zone reporter Marenzo Domingo with

enthusiasm. I not only buy these Holiday To

Go Meals for myself and my family, but I love

to share them with various needy non-profi t

organizations in town, such as senior citizen

homes and orphanages with children. They

I would much rather spend my time

    I highly recommend this outstanding

    DMZ Tour Guidelines

    - When viewing the Conference Room, do not touch any equipment belonging to North Korea.

    - Do not speak with, make any gesture toward, approach or respond to personnel from the other side.

    - Military or other offi cial considerations may prevent entry into the JSA.

    - Casual clothes, such as ripped jeans, sleeveless shirts, miniskirts, short pants, military clothes, and sandal/slippers are not permitted during the tour.

    - Shaggy or unkempt hair is not allowed.

    - Children under 10 years of age are not allowed.

The Joint Security Area (JSA)The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800

meters across. After the Armistice Agreement was

signed, the JSA became a neutral location where

guards from both sides were allowed to move about

freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone

(DMZ) where the Military Demarcation Line (MDL)

    was originally not clearly marked.

That changed after North Korean guards murdered

two United Nations Command (UNC) offi cers with

axes on August 18, 1976. After the Ax Murder

Incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA, and

that marking system continues until today.

The only place where border crossings are allowed

is inside the conference buildings of the Military

Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is

marked with one hundred and twenty six one-meter

high white stakes at 10 meter intervals. Throughout

the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with

MDL markers. Each side owns six guard posts in the

JSA and no more than thirty fi ve armed guards can

    be present on each side.

The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations

between the North and South. A variety of political

and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red

Cross meetings are held in the JSA.

Observation Post (OP) DoraAs the northernmost observatory in South Korea,

OP Dora is located within the DMZ and provides the

closest view of North Korea. Propaganda Village

and Farmland of North Korea lay in view just ahead

as do some areas of Gaeseong. The Gaeseong

Industrial Complex and a bronze statue of Kim Il

Sung can be seen through a telescope.

DMZ Third Tunnel The Third Tunnel was discovered 52 km away from

Seoul in the administrative district of Paju in 1978.

It is 1,635 meters in length, 2 meters in width and 2

meters in height. The tunnels size would allow an

army of thirty thousand fully-armed North Korean

Soldiers to pass through within an hour.

The Third Tunnel is the largest one discovered so

far, indicating North Koreas desire to invade Seoul

    during that time.

Jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker lived a mere 34

years, but in that short time he helped redefi ne

American popular music. Parker was born in Kansas

City, Kan., in 1920 and began playing the saxophone

when he was 11 years old.

Parker was a product of Kansas City. As Stanley

Crouch explains in his well-crafted new biography

of Parker, Kansas City was a kind of experimental

laboratory where the collective possibilities of

American rhythm was being refi ned and expanded on

    a nightly basis.

Musicians learned to navigate a constantly changing

complex harmony and propulsive rhythm to absorb

and respond to it within seconds. This improvised

BOOKS RecommendedReadingcreation of form and response allowed musicians

to create high-quality jazz, an exciting new sound.

In fact, during the 1930s, the sounds coming from

the jazz clubs of Kansas City made it the third most

important spawning ground for jazz after New

    Orleans and Chicago.

In 1938, Parker joined Jay McShanns band, and

it was with this group that Charlie made his debut

recording. Although Parker was talented and one

of the most infl uential musical fi gures of the 20th

century, he was haunted by drug addiction. He began

taking morphine following an automobile accident

    and soon graduated to heroin.

Parker personifi ed the tortured American artist:

a revolutionary performer who internalized all

of popular music and blew it back through his

saxophone in the form of new music known as

bebop. It was Parker who actually invented the

bebop sound, even as he wrestled with the drug

addiction that would ultimately take his life.

Crouch has been writing about jazz music and

the African-American experience for more than

four decades, and his crisply written, meticulously

researched new book the fi rst of two planned

volumes goes beyond being a mere biography. It is

the work of a jazz scholar at the top of his game.
