Plan Ahead or Plan to Think Fast!

There’s an old story about three fish that lived in a pond. One was named Plan-Ahead, another was Think-Fast, and the third was called Wait-and-See. One day they heard a fisherman say he would be going to cast his net in their pond the next day. Plan-Ahead said, “I am swimming down the river tonight.” Think-Fast said, “I am sure I will come up with a plan.” Wait-and-See lazily said, “I just can’t think about it now.” When the fisherman came, Plan-Ahead was able to escape from his nets. But Think-Fast and Wait-and-See were caught by the fisherman’s net. Think-Fast quickly rolled his belly up and pretended to be dead. “Oh, this fish is no good!” said the fisherman and threw him safely back into the water. However, Wait-and-See ended up in the fish market. That is why people say, “In times of danger, when the net is cast, plan ahead or plan to think fast!”

Planning ahead takes time - but is fruitful! Over the course of the last year, our Session and Staff have been working hard to design and develop a new means of attracting and engaging our members in the joyful work of our shared ministry. It has meant seemingly endless hours of time spent writing seemingly endless pages of job descriptions and ministry checklists, in order to provide every single member with a way to serve God through this church. The new model is called “The Shared Leadership Ministry Model.” Not the flashiest name—but it will take us where we want to go. It organizes our ministry into smaller pieces.

Every one of you has a “peace” of our ministry. This fall, each and every one of you will be invited to share in the ministry of Christ in a way that utilizes your gifts for ministry in ways you may expect—and in ways you’ve never imagined! If you’re smart, you’ll plan ahead: read through the articles and begin to imagine where God may desire for you to serve. If you wait until fall, you’d better be ready to think fast: ministry team members will seek you out and invite you to serve as part of their teams. And if you’re not sure yet where to serve, you can wait and see—and we’ll find you. Everybody serves! Everybody wins! So jump in today!

We’re all in this together,

Rev. Bob Sheldon, Interim Pastor

Music and Worship Ministries Potluck

Todd and Jenee O’Connor are hosting a Labor Day cookout! Please consider yourself invited if you participated on a music or worship ministry team at Crossroads over the past year (or so)! This is not a rehearsal…just food and fellowship among friends and families. So if you are in town on Monday, September 1, come over to N87W6261 Willowbrooke Drive in Cedarburg between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. and bring a dish to pass. Reply to [email protected] or give the O’Connors a call at home at 262-618-4999 if you will attend so they can get a good burger count for the grillmeister (drinks also provided).

Last year the Joyful Noise Choir expanded to include preschoolers! It was a great success, but we’d like even more of our wee little ones joining in the fun and learning to sing God’s praises. We will again welcome the Joyful Noise Cherub Choir (from 6:30 - 6:50 p.m. this year) for our little ones in 3K , 4K and Kindergarten under the guidance of Jenee O’Connor and Carrie Kons but also be teaching the very same songs during childcare on Sunday mornings. This allows more instruction time, and expands the experience to children who may not be at church on Wednesday evenings! Won’t you consider bringing your joyful singer to be part of the Joyful Noise Cherub Choir? Call Children’s Music Ministry Coordinator Tina Carroll to find out more at 262-242-1670.This introduction to music and songs celebrating Bible themes will set our smallest disciples on a path to being the youngest worship leaders at Crossroads and include them in worship services at Crossroads as well as the Christmas musical on Sunday, December 14.

Crossroads’ first annual Fall Festival takes place the morning of Sunday, September 7. Join in a variety of activities which will foster sharing life together. A celebratory Communion worship service will begin at 9:30 a.m. and then from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. you are encouraged to stay for a delicious potluck brunch with seating in the CLC and under the tent on the lawn. Please bring your favorite dish to pass. There will be an opportunity to participate in a hands-on mission project in the narthex after service, as well as a chance to visit several information tables to learn about fellowship opportunities this fall and to register children, youth and adults for programs. You are encouraged to greet the new Children’s Ministry Director, Karen Van Galder, in the CLC at the Children’s Ministry table! If you like to be active and are interested in a family activity for the afternoon, bring your bikes to church this morning because we’ve organized an all-church bike ride to begin at Crossroads and then follow the Interurban Trail. You can travel as far north as you’d like and then return to the church. We anticipate a great morning sharing our lives together at the Fall Festival on Sunday, September 7, so save the date today! Need more information or want to help? Contact: Jenee O’Connor at 262-242-1670 x138 or [email protected].

Elementary Crossroads on Wednesday (E-COW) Starts September 17 with a New Musical Twist!

We are excited to announce that this fall our children’s midweek program (COW) will look a little different as we take on the musical production “David’s Dynasty” to be performed on Sunday, December 14 at 9:30 a.m. This is a wonderful tale of the Christmas story as a family of shepherds discovers the meaning of being part of the royal dynasty that will one day produce a new king for their people. The basic format for E-COW will stay the same, but rec groups will be working on the show. After dinner, the students will rotate through Choir time, Bible time and Show Prep where they will choose to create crafts for props, build show sets, sew costumes, rehearse acting and drama techniques, and learn theater movement and dance. We are looking for lots of serving hands and hearts to disciple and love our children in this new and exciting way! Contacts: Tina Carroll, Children’s Music Ministry Coordinator [email protected] or Jenee O’Connor, Associate Worship Minister at [email protected] is August 17, 24, and 31 and September 7.

Adult Ministry

New Education Time on Sunday Mornings!10:45-11:45 a.m.

Fall is coming really fast, so are the new Adult Ministry Sunday Morning classes. The Adult Ministry Team has been very busy during the summer planning for the fall and winter classes. We are bringing back some familiar class structures and introducing new ones. We have a place for everyone with the classes being offered Sunday mornings in the CLC.

September 14 – November 23: Topics include recognizing and reinforcing our family values, prayer within the family, communication within the home, teaching respect and manners, and celebrating Advent in your home.

Contemporary Issues – All are welcome for lively discussion in this thought provoking class on how we live our faith in contemporary culture. September 14 – October 19: “Violence in the Bible,” led by Chris Spotts. Can a book replete with war, genocide and a God who asked God’s people to kill, speak to the epidemic of violence in our culture? November 2, 9 and 23: The Skeptical Christian,” led by Chris Spotts. Do you have nagging questions about your Christian faith, are you having trouble reconciling some of today’s issues with the Bible. Come to class and ask your questions.

New Believers – A great class for new believers or for those who want to deepen their faith. We will explore the Bible, answer questions and find out what Christianity is all about. September 14 – November 23: “The Story,” led by Marty Jarvi and Dave Sass. God goes to great lengths to rescue lost and hurting people. That is what “The Story” is all about: the story of the Bible, God’s great love affair with humanity.

Bible Study – Classes exploring Scripture and discerning what God’s Word is saying to us. September 14 – November 2: “Genesis Study,” led by Roy McGregor. Mission & Outreach Ministry

Mission Trip

Member Mike Corbett traveled on the Living Waters for the World trip to Tres Reyes, Mexico the week of July 14. Tres Reyes (three kings) is a community of about 500 residents located two hours southwest of Cancun in what can only be described as jungle. There is no potable water in Mexico. Everyone must purchase water, but money is scarce. The poverty is oppressive. The water plant we’re building with the residents will not only service their community but several smaller villages nearby providing enough income to employ a small operating staff and a minimal, but critical maintenance budget. Everything went according to plan and purified water was being made by the end of the day Wednesday, July 16. (An interesting aside -- the locals are Mexican and speak Spanish but their preferred language is Mayan so communication was challenging.)

It’s time again to collect school supplies for three of our mission partners. These supplies are donated to Agape Community Center, Our Next Generation and New Beginnings. When buying school supplies for your children, please consider buying some of these much-needed items for youngsters at these mission sites. For more information call Bonnie Patton 262-242-4014.

Family Promise

Crossroads will soon be part of a new and exciting outreach opportunity called Family Promise of Ozaukee County. Some dedicated and ardent volunteers from around Ozaukee County have spent the last year organizing this interfaith ministry to address the issues of homelessness in local communities. It provides temporary housing and other social services to local homeless families. The ministry consists of a network of ‘host churches’ from across the area, and an ‘Affiliate’ that provides coordination and services. Host churches take turns providing meals and shelter for the participants in the program. Each host church opens its doors 4–6 times per year, for one full week at a time, to provide overnight lodging, meals and hospitality for up to 5 homeless families at a time (at most 14 individuals). Guests spend the evening and overnight at the hosting church, and are then transported to a centralized Day Center each day, where guests receive help finding employment and housing, and can receive care for pre-school children.

Crossroads will be able to use our abundant facility to provide hospitality to these families. We will respond with hearts and hands to provide shelter, meals and compassionate assistance to our homeless “neighbors.” This will be a powerful and rewarding ministry for Crossroads as we help change the lives of these families in their own community.

The Family Promise affiliate has just received their 501c designation as a charitable organization from the IRS. Ten churches have covenanted to be part of the affiliate with the hope of adding three more before it moves forward. The affiliate has planned an exciting youth fundraiser, Cardboard City, September 13-14. Interested high school students should contact Director of Student Ministries, Victor Vilar at [email protected].

The affiliate continues to look for a day center to house families during the day, provide showers and office space. It is also looking to securing a 12 passenger van to transport families between churches and the day center. Once these issues are solved we will move forward with the Family Promise mission to bring congregations together to address the issues of homelessness in Ozaukee County.

The Great GetawayThe Lake is Calling and I Must Go! November 14-16, 2014

Believe it or not the Great Getaway is only a few short months away. The Great Getaway is a Crossroads weekend retreat at the beautiful Green Lake Conference Center on the banks of Green Lake near Ripon, WI. The Great Getaway is open to all ages and will take place Friday evening, November 14 through Sunday morning, November 16.

Activities include a guest speaker and theme, Spirit-filled worship, student programming, small group time, golf (weather permitting), family games, and much more.

All participants stay in hotel-style rooms and the registration fee includes delicious meals during the weekend.

This year we welcome the 2014 guest speaker Rev. Ben Johnston-Krase.Ben is the Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Racine. Prior to his coming to Racine / Milwaukee Presbytery in 2008, Ben spent years in camp and conference ministry, worked as a public middle school teacher, and upon graduation from McCormick Seminary, served as an associate pastor for campus ministry in Austin, TX. A song-writer and music leader, he has led music at numerous conferences, Ben’s wife Karla is a yoga instructor. As the father of three young girls, Ben enjoys Play-Doh, Polly Pockets, Candyland, and reading Harry Potter novels aloud.

This year’s retreat explores the concept of predestination—a notion that many of us know is a part of our Presbyterian and Reformed faith history, even though it remains a complicated mystery. Using predestination as a starting point, we will explore some of the building blocks of our faith and give them a fresh perspective.
