CE RECAP Butt In to Butt OutAdam Hort - Senior Pharmacist (Fiona Stanley Hospital)
In Australia smoking results in 750000 days spent in hospital Smoking increases the risk of coronary heart disease by 2 to 4 times It increases the risk of stroke by 2 to 4 times Patients who smoke are a common occurrence in the day to day work of a hospital pharmacist
In the last week of May Emma Dean Acting Population Health and Health Promotion Coordinator and Lead Pharmacist-Smokefree Alfred Health was flown to Perth by the Cancer Council of Western Australia (CCWA) Her time in Perth included a number of presentations to hospital executives cancer specialists mental health workers and most importantly approximately 50 hospital pharmacists at an SHPA CCWA and Metropolitan Health Services joint event
Emma challenged the group to think about our smoking inpatients as not only patients suffering from nicotine withdrawal syndrome but also patients that even in the pre-contemplative stage of quitting have a good chance of quitting Emma shared the Alfredrsquos journey to becoming a smoke free hospital and provided an overview of the available evidence that supports the use of nicotine replacement therapy A copy of Emmarsquos presentation can be found on the CCWArsquos website and keep an eye on the CCWA YouTube channel for a similar presentation in video

For those who are looking for something different to listen to on the way to work in the morning and havenrsquot discovered the Purple Pen Podcast you donrsquot know what you are missing
Jane Booth and Dan Guidone are clinical pharmacists who with the support of SHPA publish a fortnightly podcast lasting 20-30 minutes on a wide variety of contemporary clinical pharmacy topics with an Australian focus They have managed to interview some fantastic contributors and have just published their 50th episode where they revisited the topic of their first episode ndash Antibiotic Allergies with Dr Jason Trubiano According to their statistics other popular episodes are Why Tramadol Sucks (and also Codeine) by Prof Dave Juurlink from Toronto from March this year and Smoking Cessation with Emma Dean from March 2017
They have listeners from all over the world and for the Australian pharmacist who is looking for innovative ways to engage with CPD they even have an episode about What makes a competent pharmacist with great tips on how to extend your learning from the podcast to guide you CPD learning plan
The focus of these is obviously Australian clinical pharmacists but there is no reason why their audience canrsquot be wider and I have recommended some to the junior doctors I have been working with (particularly the Therapeutic guidelines Cardiovascular podcast)
