Cynthia Stary Drajna owned and operated Iowa Star Quilts as a brick and

mortar store for 20 years, closing it in 2007 to concentrate on designing

quilts for her pattern company of the same name and her on-line business.

Along with her regular design obligations, she is currently collaborating

with Patience Griffin, author of the Kilts and Quilts book series.

The Kilts & Quilts Trunk Show will feature quilts designed by Cynthia,

Iowa Star Quilts.com. Patience, who will also be here, teamed up with Cynthia

to bring to life the quilts from her fictional small town of Gandiegow,

Scotland. In Gandiegow, anything can happen—love, laughter, and of course,

quilting. The first book To Scotland with Love was released in June, 2014. A

second book is scheduled for release in January, 2015. There is a quilters'

contest, information available at www.PatienceGriffin.com, that might

interest some members.

My QSCD Diagnosis

I need to share with you that I‘ve been diagnosed

with QSCD. That‘s Quilter‘s Seasonal Color Disorder

which I‘m fairly sure is not in the dictionary. OK, so it

was a self diagnosis but this happens to me every time

winter turns into spring and again when those fall-ish

cooler temperatures come around!

As I write this, we‘re having mild weather but as

soon as those nippy temperatures show up, all I‘ll want to

do is sew with what I call cozy fabrics in cozy colors. Just

the opposite happens when spring finally arrives, that‘s

when bright, happy colors call my name! Am I the only

one or does this happen to you too?

Weather fluctuations really confuse me. Civil War

reproduction fabrics or Kaffe, which should I use? If you

find out I‘ve been checking the weather forecast to make

fabric decisions, you‘ll know I‘ve gone over the edge and

need an intervention.

The cure for QSCD? Should there be one? I guess

living in a one season state would work but that‘s not for

me. I‘ve heard of some successful treatments involving

fabric acquisition which must be repeated on a regular

basis. The size of my stash makes me wonder if I‘ve been

in treatment this whole time!

Speaking of color, I enjoyed seeing speaker Carl

Hentsch‘s color wheel computer program during his

presentation last month. I don‘t know if I could figure out

how to use it but it looked like it would be fun to play

with. I stopped by his Wednesday workshop and all the

participants were busy cutting and stitching. Their color

combinations were great and I hope we see their projects

in Show & Share soon!

Thank you for making my first meeting so much

easier than I thought it would be! Several of you

mentioned that it was difficult to hear me. I will definitely

try to speak up at the November meeting but please let me

know if you can‘t hear me.

See you at guild! Mayleen

The Matchmaker’s Quilt

By Cynthia Stary Drajna of Iowa Star Designs

This scrappy quilt can be made in several different sizes

and layouts, use lots of fabrics for a truly scrappy look!

This pattern:

--uses scraps, lots of them

--uses basic parts to make the blocks

--uses HST (half-square triangles), log cabin, and 4

patches

--is a good project for beginner piecers, interesting

for more experienced quilters for placement of

blocks

Library Lines

Sandra Dallas fans, run, don‘t walk (okay, maybe

speed walk) to our library. We have one copy of her

brand-spanking new novel, A Quilt for Christmas. Also,

newly donated to the library is Elm Creek Quilts, by

Jennifer Chiaverini and Nancy Odom, which includes

quilt projects inspired by Chiaverini's Elm Creek Quilts

novels.

The library has also obtained two new CDs from

Lenore Crawford, the speaker at our September meeting,

(―Enhancing your Art Quilt with Fabric Paint‖

and ―Fusing/Fabric Painting Technique‖). If

you were inspired to make a picture-perfect

quilt using teeny-tiny pieces of fabric, or if

you would just like to learn how to use fabric

paint to highlight your latest art quilt, these

CDs may be exactly what you need.

Share Your Program Ideas

As the new Vice-President Elect I will be finding

speakers for next year. I have some great ideas but would

like to hear from you. Please send me your suggestions

for speakers. You can call, email or just grab me at the

next guild meeting.

Thanks!

Procrastinators and all those scrambling for ―last

minute‖ handmade gifts or decorations: we have a shelf

of books dedicated to Christmas. These books have

plenty of pictures and patterns of stockings, table runners,

tree skirts, and wall-hangings. There is sure to be

something that will inspire you.

Also, just a reminder – You need to show us your

current membership card in order to check out a

book. Olivia and I appreciated everyone‘s help at the

October meeting, when new cards were

issued, in making the check-out procedure

go as smoothly as possible. Thank you!

Blogs, or 'Web Logs' have

been around since the 1990's

but I didn't discover them

until five years ago. If you

can think of a topic, there is a

blog about it and there are

thousands of blogs about

quilting.

It's fascinating to read about

the differences and similarities in quilting around the

world and I follow blogs written by quilters all over the

USA and in England, Australia and Japan. It gives you a

little snapshot of different cultures and lifestyles. After

following a blog for a while, I come to feel that I know

that quilter; their quilts, their pets and family and their

style.

My blog was started so I could post pictures of my

customer's quilts. They love seeing their quilts online and

sharing them with other quilters. I would love to know of

other members of Prairie Quilt Guild that have their own

blog. So far I only know of mine -

http://thesecretlifeofmrsmeatloaf.blogspot.com/

and Mayleen's - http://qisforquilt.blogspot.com/.

If you have a blog please let me know and I will

include a list in the newsletter next month.

On Friday, October 3rd, 2014 PQG members Nancy

Wyant, Katherine Vohs, Margaret Mans, and 7 volunteers

demonstrated an 1870‘s quilting bee for Wichita area school

students.

We set up a quilt frame and quilt, displayed old and new

quilts, demonstrated various hand-sewn projects, and PQG

member Barb Nickelson provided two display boards with

samples of colorful quilt blocks.

Old Cowtown Fair 2014

The students were invited to hand quilt. They were given a

color page and a 4-patch kit. The teachers received PQG

Education Grant Brochures and business cards.

This event was a success due to the participation of the

aforementioned members, Deanna Miller (member), and

homeschool volunteers: Monica, Theresa, and Elaina

Maus, Bernadette, Cecilia, and Amelia Cordell.

Honors and Awards

Betty Enright‘s quilt, Wedding Star, won Best of

Show at the Ozark Piecemakers Quilt Show in

Springfield, Missouri. Jan Hutchison machine quilted

Betty‘s quilt.

The Cotheals at Home, pieced and appliquéd by

Mayleen Vinson and machine quilted by Jan Hutchison,

won 2nd place in the AQS Des Moines Show. This quilt

previously won Best of Show at our Common Threads

2014 show.

The American Red Cross contacted El Dorado

Correctional Facility for assistance in filling a request by

one of their employees, Sherri Barnes, to have comfort

quilts made for families whose homes were involved in a

fire. The offenders at El Dorado Correctional Facility and

Oswego Correctional Facility agreed to make the comfort

quilts for the Red Cross.

Carrie Marlett, a staff member here at the EDCF,

created a sample quilt that used a strip technique that was

used as a pattern for this project. The Wichita Prairie

Quilt Guild donated the majority of the fabric used to

make these quilts. The local Wal-Mart also donated

$1000.00 towards this cause. A total of ten (10)

offenders, five (5) from EDCF and five (5) from OCF

made this project a success by making these comfort

quilts for the American Red Cross.

Please be respectful of others

and refrain from talking

during the meeting!

This project also gave offenders the opportunity to

make these quilts that will be utilized in Sedgwick,

Butler, Sumner and Cowley Counties. The following Red

Cross staff were onsite to receive the quilts: Sheri
