Andrew has been with Melton since February 2015. Melton was his first driving job.
Andrew is from Bartow, Florida and would like to give a shout out to
his mom, Cathy, and all his siblings. When Andrew is not driving, he enjoys
traveling and spending time with his family.
We asked Andrew what made Melton different from other companies and, he said, “The atmosphere. People here know me by name, they don’t refer to me by my truck number.”
Andrew had some tips to help other drivers be successful, he said, “Put God first, refuse to be outworked, and never become complacent.
Andrew also wanted to give a shout out to a few people. Andrew said, “Thank you to Darla Shew, Ashley Pearson, Mike Potter, Roberto Torres, Tracy Schroeder, and Angie Buchanan – none of this would be possible without their help.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Openline.
I enjoyed seeing many of our finest drivers during our recent Driver Appreciation Week. This year, our theme was “Melton All-Stars” – because our drivers are professionals who perform at award-winning levels month in and month out. Our DOM Andrew Carter and ROM James Seal are examples of that top performance.
As our company has grown, there are ever more moving parts to oversee. I am proud of the company we have built, and look forward to continuing to foster our success together. However, my role is transitioning as I become increasingly involved with business continuity planning, community, political and industry
activities, which is a typical transition for someone of my age and career position.
To keep the same level of focus across our companies as we grow, I am pleased to announce the promotions of Russ Elliott to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and Robert Ragan to Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. I will remain Chairman and CEO. While turning 65 is a bit of a milestone, I plan on remaining at the helm for the foreseeable future. Russ’ and Robert’s involvement will be in more of a consultancy role. With a combined Melton experience of 43 years, Russ and Robert have proven themselves in their roles at the company and I am grateful for their many skills and dedication. I couldn’t feel better or be more energized about our companies and their prospects.
In other exciting news, Melton was named a recipient of Logistics Management Magazine’s Quest for Quality Award for the 11th time and earned first place for Industrial & Heavy Haul Carriers category. We truly set the bar in customer service and we wouldn’t receive this honor without our terrific employees, including of course, over 1,200 professional truck drivers.
We recently concluded our iCare PHA screenings campaign in order to qualify for lower premiums next year. We screened over 1,100 employees and spouses and hope all will share those results with a primary care provider and address any health issues quickly. If you did not receive your PHA screening results, please contact the Benefits Team at 844-577-7807.
In addition to your personal health, we are always concerned about your safety. Now is the time to stock your truck with proper winter gear and get into the right mindset. If this is your first winter, call Safety to get some tips and take your targeted training. As always, keep plenty of following distance, remove your distractions, and use your Smith System Keys.
Stay Safe and stay off your cell phones while you’re driving. Texting and driving kills!

Melton Driver Named Rookie of the YearBy: Marilyn Surber - Employee Relations ManagerMelton is proud to announce that driver Daniel Shonebarger has been selected as the Truckload Carrier Association’s Trucking’s Top Rookie of the Year. Daniel seamlessly represents the high standard that Melton expects from its drivers. His tremendous success in the first year of his trucking career speaks volumes to Daniel’s great character, dedication, and desire to work in the trucking industry.
Daniel, a U.S. Navy veteran, began driving for Melton in the summer of 2016. When asked why he chose trucking, Daniel states, “There is something to be said about shifting through gears in the biggest vehicle on the road. The responsibility that trucking entails is tremendous and I love that.”
His Driver Manager, Carolyn Orr, was ecstatic that Daniel was chosen as a finalist for the award. She states, “Daniel has always been patient and treated me with respect. He is the definition of what a Melton driver should be and a true team player. It is a pleasure to work with him!”
The finalists for TCA’s Trucking’s Top Rookie Award were honored during events at the Great American Truck Show in August. Congratulations to Daniel Shonebarger for his well-deserved top honors!

“
”
Renita Alcaraz would like to share a special message from one of our customers stating, “I try to tell every single Melton driver that comes here, how much I appreciate Melton and what a wonderful job they do for us. They are all so kind and easy to work with. I appreciate Melton very much.”
Eric Shaw (10234) would like to send a shout out to Richard Riley (10928) for giving him a new “Oversized Load” sign. Richard noticed Eric’s sign was looking bad upon pulling into a service plaza and was kind enough to give him a replacement. Way to go, Richard!
Jack Hand (11670) would like to thank Greg Gilbert (9620) and Rose Gonzalez for getting him home to Florida to take his hometime. Jack did not have a clear plan as to how he would get home until Greg gave up his load and Rose set up a repower to get Jack headed on the right path. Jack says, “This is one of the many reasons I love working here at Melton.”
Lindsay Rippe-Hahn would like to give a shout out to Matt Chrisman (10770). She says, “We had a project requiring nine trucks, and Matt went above and beyond expectations with communication and delivery! I would like to thank him for all his hard work!”
Danny Hicks (10924) sends a big shout out to Eric Shaw (10234) for helping him with his tarps at a consignee in Oklahoma City. Danny said he could not have done it without him!Billy Berry (10932) would like to thank
Norberto Gonzalez (10754) for helping him one morning in Utah. He says, “Norberto is a true team player.”
Matt Chrisman (10770) says, “Kudos to DM’s Mike Potter and Brandon Call! There have been extraordinary situations and they both went to bat for me. They both really care for the drivers.”
DM Chris Sharrock would like to thank Danny Webb (9770) and recognize him for being willing to give up an excellent load to California to allow another driver to take care of a family emergency. Not only was Danny willing to help us out at his own expense, but he did so with understanding and kindness. Danny’s selflessness is great example of the family bonds we try to build within our company and deserves recognition.
One of our potential drivers wanted to give a big shout out to recruiters Madison Barlow and Janet Williams. The driver said, “Madison and Janet did such a great job. They helped answer all my questions and always followed up. Melton has a good bunch of recruiters!” Thank you for representing Melton so well!
Angie Buchanan, Rick Vincent, Charles Cozart, Marilyn Surber and Scott Stephan would like to give a big shout out to the Ambassadors who volunteered to help train new drivers when we needed them. It was a testament to their teamwork and leadership. Thank you for stepping up!
Thank you to every Melton employee that works hard to keep us going. This is what makes Melton great!

Deer Strikes on the IncreaseBy: Patti Arroyo - Claims Manager
Winter weather is approaching and it’s time to get your truck ready. Here are a few tips:
• If your truck uses DEF fluid (UREA), do NOT add any type of winter conditioner to the DEF tank. The DEF system has a built-in heater that will keep the DEF fluid at the proper temperature. If any fluid other that DEF is added to this system, severe damage will result. • Using fuel system additive labeled WINTER CONDITONER is required when cold weather arrives. Follow the directions on the container to properly mix the additive in the fuel tanks. All Melton locations will have quarts of WINTER FUEL CONDITONER available. Contact Melton’s Road Service for help in purchasing some on the road if necessary.• Proper tire pressure and visual inspections of the tires will prevent tire problems due to the extreme cold temperatures. Save yourself time by CHECKING YOUR TIRES (with a tire gauge)! If you see problems, call Road Service.• Raise the hood and give the engine area a good inspection. Look for worn fan belts, leaking radiator hoses, or anything that looks like trouble. • Check windshield fluid and wiper blades to make winter weather more tolerable. When you go to a Melton terminal, have these items checked. Tell the inspection staff if you are having any problems with the heater/defroster system. Let’s gets this stuff fixed early and not wait until it is 10 degrees outside!• Chain laws are in effect. Make sure you have cables or chains on your truck -- it’s a DOT requirement. Cables /chains will be available at all Melton locations.

After 3 years with Melton, you will receive a custom jacket and truck decal. Drivers with 3 years safe who meet all qualifications also receive profit sharing bonus.
Deer strikes can be very costly to our company and to a driver. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reported that deer-vehicle collisions result in more than 150 fatalities annually and cause over $1 billion dollars in damage as well. While we have had deer strike incidents in 33 states, the heaviest activity has always been in Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming. But don’t get complacent when driving in other states - they are everywhere!
There are a few simple things that you can do to help you avoid deer strike incidents: • Collisions occur most often in prime deer habitat, but they can also occur on busy
interstates. One deer means more deer. Deer travel in herds and if you see one, slow down, as there may be many more.
• The highest risk times for deer-vehicle collisions are from sunset to midnight and during the hours shortly before and after sunrise. Choose your route wisely and accordingly. Narrower county roads may be shorter to your destination, but with the decrease in overall speed required to navigate them safely and adding in the aspect of deer in the road, it may be better to stay on more heavily traveled areas, such as the interstate.
• One of the best ways to avoid deer collisions is to drive at a safe speed, especially in areas with deer warning signs. These signs are strategically placed in areas known to be frequented by wildlife. Heed the signs, slow down, and be prepared to take evasive action, which includes being able to quickly slow down, brake suddenly, or turn down blinding headlights.
• When driving at night, use high beam headlights when there is no oncoming traffic. The high beams will better illuminate the eyes of deer on or near the roadway.
• Brake firmly when you notice a deer in or near your path, but stay in your lane and blow your horn with one long blast to frighten the deer away.
• Drive so that you are able to stop within the space of your headlights. • Actively scan both sides of the road as you drive for any signs of wildlife - they love the grass medians. • If you see flashing lights (hazard or headlights), hear tooting horns, or see people waving madly about, slow down and
be ready to stop!
Always wear your seat belt and stay alert!

Give Yourself a Raise!By: Melissa Stephan - Recruiting Manager
How many of you would love the opportunity to control your income and get a little extra for work you already perform? In other words, give yourself a raise!
As a Melton driver, you are eligible for driver referral bonuses up to $1000. Would you like to see an extra $250, $500, or $1000 every few months on your paycheck? It can be done. Any time you are at a truck stop, at a shipper, on social media, or at
your neighborhood grocery store and you talk to a driver who is interested in Melton, collect their information and send it in to us. We will follow up with that driver immediately and see if we can invite him or her into our Melton family.
If we are able to hire them, you will receive a referral bonus once they are with us for 30 days and then again at 6 months. What does that mean for you and your family? It means you just gave yourself a raise!
Last year, Melton hired over 200 drivers who were referred by drivers just like you. With these referrals, a total of $74,000 in referral bonuses were paid. Wouldn’t you like to have a little piece of that pie? You can! Send in driver leads using your Transflo app or a Macro 21. We will pursue your lead and do our best to grow our team as well as grow your paycheck.
If you have any questions or simply want to learn more about our Road Recruiters program, please call 888-336-0419. Also, you are invited to join our Road Recruiters Facebook group to connect with other drivers and participate in monthly RR contests!

We have several levels in our Knight Program to honor your career with Melton. The goal of the Knight Program is to provide all incoming drivers with a path to success and another way for us to show our appreciation for all the hard work you do. The gifts will be distributed to you on the month following your anniversary. The Knight Program is based on tenure; safe driving does not contribute to your classification, although we want everyone to work and drive safely.

Not all salads are created equal. Nothing sounds healthier than a salad, right? It may be, but not if you add the wrong ingredients. They can be a filling, low-calorie option and a great way to satisfy your daily vegetable requirements. Just follow these guidelines for making the perfectly healthy salad.
Start with a strong foundation:Start by upping the nutritional ante by choosing a base foryour salad that provides important nutrients like folic acid andlutein. Give up the iceberg for mesclun greens, baby spinach,or a spring mix that includes a variety of dark green lettuces.
Pile on the veggies:Choose a variety of colors to get the most health benefits — red bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, sugar snap peas, cucumbers, and red onions are all great choices. Be sure to stick with raw orlightly steamed vegetables.
Don’t forget the protein:Your salad becomes a meal when you add the protein! If you’re opting for animal protein, selectone lean source, such as four egg whites or three ounces of skinless chicken or turkey breast,water-packed chunk light tuna, wild salmon, or lean sirloin steak. If you’re vegetarian or just wantto mix it up, choose half a cup of cubed tofu or three-quarters of a cup of chickpeas, kidney beans, pinto beans, or other legumes.
Choose one extra:Extras are those items that typically add another dimension and flavor to your combo of greens, vegetables, and lean protein. While some of these extras are packed with nutrients, they’re alsopacked with calories and fat, so they should be added sparingly. Luckily, a little of these high-fatgoodies goes a long way, so you won’t need more than one of the following (each of which isbetween 40 and 70 calories):• 2 tablespoons cheddar, Parmesan, goat, Swiss, or feta cheese• 1 tablespoon chopped walnuts, pecans, or sliced almonds• 1 tablespoon sunflower or pumpkin seeds• 1 ounce avocado• 10 small olives (canned/jarred in water)• 1/4 cup croutons• 2 tablespoons dried cranberries or raisins
Dress it up lightly:Unfortunately, dressing can take a salad from fresh and nutritious to downright unhealthy. Onetablespoon of your average vinaigrette is about 80 calories and one tablespoon of creamy ranchis almost 100 calories. Whenever possible, choose light, low-calorie, or low-fat options. You canalso make your own light vinaigrette using one part oil and three parts vinegar with some mustard, lemon, 100 percent fruit jam, or spices for added flavor.

This month we will focus on:
Bulkheads and X-Straps: Load securement compliance is a serious matter! With the introduction of CSA, load securement is seeing even more scrutiny. Melton drivers have been put Out of Service for failing to build bulkheads, use X-Straps or comply with the “5 Foot Rule”. It is mandatory to have two pieces of securement within the first five feet of any section of your load. In addition to that, you can use the following devices to help control forward motion and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
Build A Bulkhead!• The rule of thumb is - “If there is room on the trailer, then a
bulkhead MUST be built.”• To build a bulkhead, stack 3 or 4 pieces of dunnage as close
to the front of the load as practical. Secure the boards with a chain and binder using two large teardrops. Install the binder on top of the stack using caution while levering it closed.
• Anything higher than four boards will most likely not be stable.
• Doubling the thickness of the bulkhead is allowed if you have the boards and the space
Use X-Straps:• X-Straps are detailed in
your “Load Securement Handbook”.
• Use for loads that are taller than or lack enough space for a bulkhead.
• In addition to controlling forward motion, X-Straps can introduce another layer of stability to the venerable ends of
your load.• Attach your straps as close to the front of the load as practical, then cross your straps over the top and to the center of the load.• Keep your angle of pull less than 45 degrees.
Changing LanesBy Rick Vincent, Director of Safety & Driver Training
Lane change collisions can result in a significant cost simply due to their nature.• They often are above the speed of 45 m.p.h.• They normally result in loss of control of one or both vehicles involved• Medical treatment is likely.• More often than not, they are D.O.T. reportable.
There are two types of Lane Changes:1. Convenience Lane Change2. Necessary Lane ChangeA convenience lane change is made for a path of least resistance and better visibility.A necessary lane change is made due to changing conditions ahead of you that force the change.
The main question you must ask is: Do I need to change lanes?
In all cases, ask yourself the following:• Is the lane change a good and wise decision?• Will it improve your space cushion?• Will it Leave You an Out?• Is the lane you intend to move to clear?• Are your mirrors adjusted properly to adequately see the area on your right and left?• Have you communicated your intentions well in advance and have other motorists seen your communications?• Can you make your maneuver smoothly and cautiously, taking approximately 4 to 5 seconds?
Departing your lane voluntarily can be a risky thing to do!Make the right choice to be safe with your driving behavior.
By Pax Rolfe, Safety GeneralistOur Focus
Where is our focus? What is the force that will drive or is driving your actions and decision-making through the day?
More often than not, as a professional truck driver, your focus is to be as productive as possible. You are paid by the mile. The more the wheels roll, the more you are paid. This condition can and will dictate your decision-making process in this profession.
Have you ever driven longer than you should have while fatigued?Have you driven while physically not at 100%, sick, etc?Have you been effected emotionally by the actions of other motorists?
The chances are that you probably answered yes to one or all of these questions. These questions all relate to everyday life and can happen to anyone. What sets you, the professional driver, apart from others is the effect they have on your ability to focus on the job of driving safely.
• Recognize the distraction• Make the adjustment• Focus on the task of driving safely
Maintain Your Focus and reduced your risk of an accident!
