The slightly wooded grounds of the facility include a picnic shelter and lots of green space that can be used for gardening and other outdoor activities. The Yorkshire facility also houses most of the SASi Medicaid Service Coordinators, the Quality Assurance Department and several Job Developer/Trainers. The large, private parking lot allows for abundant employee and visitor parking which is great because Yorkshire has become a very busy site. SASi’s newest Day Habilitation site in Yorkshire opened on March 2, 2009. The building renovations were completed last fall; however, the opening was delayed for four months due to the New York State budget crisis. TeamWorks is the division of SASi that assists qualified individuals in finding and maintaining employment. We offer many employment options and services to help individuals become gainfully employed. But for many of our individuals, without the willingness of local business and industry to provide employment opportunities, employment would not be possible One of our most recent community partners is Mighty Taco. Our relationship with Mighty Taco started when they became a sponsor of our Golf tournament in 2004. As they found out more about the services that we provide at SASi, Mighty Taco started

employing individuals from our program at their various locations around Western New York. Currently, twelve of our individuals are employed by Mighty Taco. Employment for our individuals means freedom, independence and a feeling of accomplishment. These are intangibles that would not be experienced if we did not have the support of our many community partners.

During these times of financial concern my husband reminds me to be sure and get the salt washed off our cars to preserve them longer. Trying to be mindful of his advice, I washed our car one day in sub zero weather and promptly froze all of the mechanisms for the door locks! When I came out of the grocery store I was startled that the doors would not open. What do I do? Whom do I call? How will I get home? Fortunately, I had an auto club membership and within a half hour, the doors were open and I was on my way home. Such a feeling of helplessness is often felt by parents of consumers and by consumers themselves as they seek to connect with services that meet their needs. I liken SASi— its staff and services—to an auto club group. SASi is an organization that relieves the feeling of helplessness much like the auto club group reached out to me. SASi strives to listen and respond to individual needs. Caring individuals stand ready to connect with consumers and their parents to navigate stressful times. I encourage all those who wonder about SASi and the assistance it can provide to contact the Elma office at 716-805-1555. Your questions and concerns will be addressed by competent professionals who care deeply about you.

SASi’s Iron Persons for 2008 Does anyone ever really notice when you show up to work everyday? At SASi we do. Not only is good attendance noticed, it is very much appreciated because having the proper staffing is vital to our ability to provide consistent service and coverage for our individuals. Recently, 13 employees received SASi’s “Iron Person” award for not calling in sick for all of 2008! This is certainly a feat well deserving of recognition. Each of these 13 staff received a $100 gift card, plus, they were each credited with an extra Personal Day for 2009 to use whenever they wish.

Congratulations go to SASi’s Iron Persons for 2008: Joy Bargy, Lisa Chaney, Tom Farr, Cindy Kuras, Lorrie

Manthey, George Morman, Peggy Northrup, Greg Norton, Marcia Ray, Patti Richardson, John Squelch, Kathy Urf, and Marcy Weber.

Other good news includes SASi’s ability to, once again, put into our budget a three percent Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) for our staff for 2009. SASi was also able to continue to provide the same health and dental insurance coverage without increasing staff’s contribution. Given the state of the economy, we are very fortunate that our efficiencies have resulted in a positive impact on our employees.

This winter, the Elma Day Hab took on a project to collect used cell phones to help save endangered gorillas in Africa as well as raise funds for the Buffalo Zoo. This project was inspired by a local third grader, Mariah, who has made saving gorillas a priority in her young life. She has partnered with Eco-Cell, an environmental conservation organization, which has promised that for every cell phone collected they will donate up to $15.00 to help support the Buffalo Zoo. As of March 31st, SASi collected 102 cell phones. One individual, Jason, made a great contribution by bringing in 24 cell phones on his own. In exchange for the cell phones, Eco-cell will donate a total of $1530 to the Buffalo Zoo in SASi’s name.

You may be asking what the connection is between collecting cell phones and saving gorillas. Almost all electronics – not just cell phones and laptops – use a metallic ore called “Coltan” which is a mix of Columbite and Tantalite. These ores are being illegally mined in the Congo and, as a result, the natural habitat of the African Mountain Gorillas is being destroyed. Another species, the Eastern Lowland gorilla, in Africa has already declined by 90% in the past five years.

By collecting and recycling old cell phones, the need for new mining to take place will be reduced dramatically thereby minimizing the destruction of the environment. Additionally, cell phones and other electronic devices contain toxic chemicals that are harmful to the environment and cause dangerous pollution if they are not recycled properly. This project not only helps the gorillas but it also helps the environment by keeping cell phones out of landfills.

The project ended on March 31st, but anyone still wishing to recycle their old cell phone can turn it in at our Elma site. You might also be interested in visiting Mariah’s website, www.mariahsavesgorillas.com or the Eco-cell website at www.eco-cell.org for more information.

It’s often said that two heads are better than one when it comes to problem solving and getting things done. Partnering with other agencies, organizations and educational institutions can likewise be very beneficial and generally leads to increased, improved and enhanced services for the individuals we serve. Some of the partnerships that SASi’s Program Services (Day Hab, Pre-vocational and Supported Work) has established over the years include: transition programs with numerous school districts for students who are aging out; pre-vocational testing; Direct Support Professional Training in conjunction with other OMRDD voluntary agencies; and Youth Employment Services in partnership with the Buffalo & Erie County Workforce Development Board, Catholic Charities, People Inc., Aspire and Heritage Centers. The Article 16 Clinic has partnered with SUNY at Buffalo, Buffalo State College and D’Youville College to provide opportunities for their students to have internships with SASi clinicians who are very experienced in working with individuals who have developmental disabilities. The interest and commitment on the part of the schools and students has been very positive.

Partnering for Success

Saving Gorillas… One Cell Phone at a Time!

SASi’s Elma Day Habilitation program hosted its third annual fashion show and pageant on February 13, 2009. Friends, family members and care providers, donated many of the suits and dresses for the men and women to wear. No outfit was complete without some added primping and preparation which made everyone look like a star. All of the participants look forward to this annual event because it is a fun opportunity to dress to the nines and feel special.

On Saturday, March 14th, McKinley’s Hotel and Banquet Center in Blasdell was host to over 340 guests who attended this annual family friendly fundraising event. The evening started out with a fantastic basket raffle featuring nearly one hundred twenty theme baskets with a combined value of over $10,000. The baskets were donated by local businesses, individual supporters and SASi staff members.

SASi’s 13th Annual Murder Mystery Dinner was a Huge Success!

The AM Lockport Players and willing audience members filled the evening with an entertaining performance of “Send In The Clowns.” This story of a family owned circus was filled with toil and treachery as family members fought for their place in the center ring of the Farnum & Farley Circus. In the meantime, the clowns were on the top of the killer’s hit list and no one was safe from suspicion. As it turns out, the biggest winners of the night were SASi’s own consumers, programs and services which will significantly benefit from the over $14,000 raised from the event.

For the second year in a row, Majestic Pools & Spas donated an indoor-outdoor, all convenient, tile bar valued at more than $1000.

This donation allowed SASi to have a separate drawing which raised over $1200.

On Saturday, January 12th, Amy made a selfless and generous donation to Locks of Love. Amy lives in SASi’s Sardinia II IRA and has been growing her hair for over two years anticipating this act of kindness. Fantastic Sam’s in Arcade cut and styled her hair and submitted her donation to Locks of Love. This is the second donation Amy has made.

Amy received a very nice card from Madonna Coffman, president of Locks of Love. She wrote, “Dear Amy, Thank you for your generous hair donation! Your selfless act of kindness will benefit a Locks of Love recipient and change their life for the better. Most of our recipients suffer from an autoimmune disease called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. Other recipients are cancer survivors, victims of trauma such as burns, and rare dermatological conditions that result in permanent hair loss. Your donation of hair will

help return smiles to the many varied faces of our children. On behalf of those children, their families and the Board of Directors, Thank You—You made a difference!!”

Amy was thrilled to hear how her generous gift will change someone’s life for the better. She is currently growing her hair out again for her next donation.

The SASi Development Department hosted it’s third donor recognition breakfast on Tuesday, December 16, 2008. First-time donors were treated to a wonderful breakfast buffet from Chanderson‘s Steak & Seafood in Yorkshire while learning a bit more about the programs and services SASi offers. Executive Director, Tom Becker was on hand to provide an agency overview and update guests on the latest program developments and plans for the future. There was also a question & answer session and guided tours of the Elma Administration, Article 16 Clinic and Day Habilitation programs.

With the holidays quickly approaching, our Elma program participants were eager to show their Christmas spirit to the guests. Their vocal warm-ups could be heard even before the presentation started. Once ready, guests were treated to a serenade of several holiday favorites overflowing with the excitement of the season.

Care to join us? Everyone is welcome! If you would like to attend a breakfast or arrange a tour, please call the SASi Development Office at 716-805-1555.

On January 11, 2009 three individuals from the Darien Road IRA participated in the Annual Polar Bear Swim for Charity sponsored by the Silver Creek Fire Hall. The men from Darien, as well as a few of the staff, have participated in this fund raiser for several years.

Proceeds from this event benefit the Variety Club, a major supporter of Women and Children’s Hospital. This swim is a great opportunity to do something positive and give back to the community. Everyone is looking forward to participating again in 2010.

It’s spring at last, and do you know what that means? Riders come with kind pats and carrots, volunteers brush and comb away my furry winter coat, and I get to spend lots of time in the pasture looking for new grass. I love spring! Winter at High Hurdles brought some changes to the barn. My old friend Billy retired to a local farm. His stall is now occupied by a new horse named Sassy. She is a paint mare with a brown body and big white spots. She has already started her new job here and really enjoys all the attention she’s getting. During the winter I had time to chew my hay and think about all of the wonderful people who make High Hurdles possible. We horses couldn’t do our important job without lots of help. I talked it over with my horse friends as well as with Sheila the cat and our instructors Judy, Meg, and Kathy, and they all agree that this is a good time to say “Thank You” to everyone who supports High Hurdles. Parents and care providers bring us riders so we can help them become stronger in mind and body. Volunteers spend hours walking in lessons and keeping us clean and ready for class. Folks I have never met donate equipment, feed, and even horses so we can do the best job possible. I have also heard about something called “money” being donated. I don’t know exactly what it is, although I do know you can’t eat it, wear it, ride on it, or sleep on it; but, without it High Hurdles would not exist. We wish

to express a heartfelt thanks to all of you who have made donations to High Hurdles of either your time or money. Please continue to think of us as we

start up our 2009 riding season.

Springtime means the return of school groups to High Hurdles. Students from Silver Creek and Sweet Home School Districts are back for special programs. Not only do they come to ride, but they stay an extra hour each week to learn about me and my horse friends. Each week has a different theme like Trust, Horse Health, Know your Colors and Breeds and, my personal favorite, Nutrition. I love it when the students bring in healthy horse treats that they made in school! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if more

schools would bring me riders and treats?

Well, I have to go now. Sassy is going after the last flake of hay!

Sassy, SASi’s newest member of the herd.
