As the 2005-2006 Faculty Advisor to Alpha Sigma Pi, I have been asked to write a brief biographical sketch of myself to accompany my mug shot of the Newsletter! As many of you know, I have a distinct Southern accent--- Southern Wales (Welsh) accent, that is!My family and I were all born in South Wales, United Kingdom, where I received my formal education, including a Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Wales. I taught Accounting at the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology from 1975 until 1981, excluding 1979-80 when I was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Accounting at the University of Northern Iowa. My family and I missed living in the USA. We all came back to Iowa in 1981 and I returned to the faculty of the University of Northern Iowa from 1981 until 1994.

I am sometimes asked why my family and I moved to Iowa. My tongue-in-cheek answer is that we always wanted to live near mountains and the ocean!I joined the faculty at UNF in 2004 and was the Chairperson of the Department of Accounting and Finance from 1998 until 2001. Also, I became a Kathryn and Richard Kip Professor of Accounting in 1998. I was pleased to be Chairperson in 1999, when the BBA in Accounting Program and MAcc Program were accredited by the AACSB – The International Association for Management Education (AACSB). The AACSB is recognized as the premier accrediting agency for bachelors, masters, and doctoral degree programs in business administration and accounting. UNF is one of only 168 U.S. and overseas institutions to have received AACSB accreditation of its accounting degree programs.

Message from a Fellow Osprey

By Patrick Lynch Ernst & Young Staff 1—Audit

Hello, fellow Ospreys! I have finished six months of public accounting and live to tell you about it! After graduating from UNF in April 2005, I started with Ernst & Young in July. I was nervous beginning my new career, but quickly discovered a great support system at EY that helped me feel more confident. My first two weeks were spent in training in Atlanta, GA. It was there that I learned everything from how to log on to my laptop to our audit methodology. During this time I was able to meet other newly hired auditors, who I could share my concerns and excitement with over this new career. I have had the opportunity to audit several clients, ranging from a publicly traded company to a hospital here in Jacksonville. Working on these clients has given me a broad spectrum of experience and a great foundation to build on. I am grateful for the education I received through UNF and the networking skills I gained through Alpha. Ernst & Young has been a great fit for me and I look forward to all the future experiences EY provides for me.

This AACSB accreditation adds value to the degrees earned by all graduates from the Accounting programs at UNF.

This AACSB accreditation adds value to the degrees earned by all graduates from the Accounting programs at UNF.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching accounting and actively publishing articles in accounting journals. I make sure that my articles are read by someone by assigning some of my articles as projects in the classes I teach!

I am a very active member of the Board of Directors of the Jacksonville Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants, which sponsors the Certified Management Accountants (CMA) examination and professional certification that is geared to management accounting careers within organizations. I believe that it is good idea for accounting students to seriously consider taking both the CPA and CMA examinations and to become professionally qualified for many different types of accounting careers. In conclusion, I wish to say that I am very pleased to be the current Faculty Advisor. Along with the other Accounting faculty members, I am very proud of the club leaders and members of Alpha Sigma Pi because of their many contributions to the Accounting Program and community. The Accounting club is among the most active on the UNF campus. Keep up the good work.

As I stood on the top of the mountain and turned to watch the wind rushing towards me, I had a really interesting thought – “What the heck am I doing here!?” In the next second, the air filled my paraglider, I turned to face the wind, and within seconds I was soaring over the Serra da Moeda mountains in Brazil. It’s funny what you think about at times like this. I knew I wasn’t a “tourist” anymore. Tourists go to visit another country, take a lot of pictures and think only of what they’re going to do when they finally get home. I realized at that moment that I was truly a traveler, and for me, the journey is never really going to end. That’s the essence of experiencing a new culture, trying a new type of food, listening to a different kind of music.

It expands who you are…geometrically. I’m not the same person I was before I visited Brazil, and as I travel, my viewpoints of the world and different cultures will continue to change as I experience all the new things waiting for me to discover “out there”. And I guess that’s the most difficult step for most of us – taking that first step to the “out there” we’ve never known. We’re so much more at ease with our own home, with our own food, with our own lifestyle -- more at ease with everything that makes us Americans. We’re so comfortable; we just feel uneasy about venturing “out there” to experience anything different. And if we do venture outside, it’s usually as a tourist, and not as a traveler. Ever wish you could change all that? Well, there just might be a way. The UNF Coggin College of Business has created one of the most unique programs I have ever seen in my 25+ years of teaching here. It has provided an opportunity for students to experience something that has

the potential to change their lives in a powerful way…forever. It offers you the chance to see your world as never before. Signing up for a UNF Study Abroad course may be the single most important educational experience of your lifetime. It has the potential to transform the way you view your world and to better understand who you are as a person. You see, it’s really pretty simple. If you don’t know the world, how can you ever know your place in it? So, why not look into a Study Abroad offering next year and pick a place you’ve always wanted to go to. Who knows? Maybe you just might find yourself experiencing something that will change how you view the world around you, like your view of a tropical rain forest from 3,500 feet above the ground. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll come to realize that being a traveler instead of just a tourist is a pretty darn good lifestyle after all….
