Harness Racing Update

The victory sets up another showdown with Always B Miki?s chief rival, Wiggle it Jiggleit, who has been supplemented to the $421,000 Breeders Crown open pace

Wiggle It Jiggleit, owned by George Teague Jr. Inc., and Teague Racing Partnerships LLC, is the richest harness horse this year with seasonal earnings of $1,722,162. Always B Miki set a world pacing mark of 1:46 on Oct. 9 at Red Mile.

One of four Breeders Crown events slated for the Meadowlands Racetrack on Friday (Oct. 28), the Crown Pace will be featured in a one-hour live broadcast on SNY (Sports Net New York) from 9-10:00 p.m. (EDT).

Though owner George Teague and trainer Clyde Francis had not been inclined to supplement their extraordinary four-year-old gelded son of Mr Wiggles? Mozzi Hanover, the ease with which he racked up his 38th career win in what was his 50th start ? a $250,000 Invitational at Yonkers on Oct. 15 ? changed their minds.

Wiggle It Jiggleit was the lone supplement to any Crown event by the noon deadline of Monday (Oct. 17).

?The main reason I wanted to do it was because it?s good for the business,? said Teague. ?People like to see him race and these two together, they may meet another time, but for him to be in the Breeders Crown it?s really good for the business more than anything.

?This horse just gets stronger and sharper as the year goes on. When he trained before the Yonkers race I thought he was sharper than he was in April and May. He?s never taken a week off all year and never had a bad race, either.?

Post positions for five of this year's Breeders Crown finals were drawn during Friday's card of racing. Here are the results of those post position draws:

Chezatter and Thats A l l M oni tak e Breeders Crow n el imsby Frank Cotolo for Breeders Crown

Yielding to Ariana G for the pocket in the backstretch, Chezatter, a filly by Explosive Matter out of the Malabar Man mare Chez Lucie, sprinted out of the pocket in the stretch, advancing to a 1:53.4 victory, a career best, in the first of two $20,000 Breeders Crown eliminations for two-year-old trotting fillies on Friday (Oct. 21) at the Meadowlands.

Claiming the lead through a :28 first quarter, Chezatter led into the backside as Ariana G tipped first over from fourth. She brushed to the lead, setting fractions of :57.1 and 1:26 before being pursued by Chezatter mid-stretch. Ariana G held on for second, while Princess Aurora, Sunshine Delight, and Broadway Idole also qualified for the final.

Trained by Trond Smedshammer, Chezatter races for owner Purple Haze Stable LLC. She has earned $175,062 and won four races out of 10 starts this year. Going off the 4-1 second choice to 1-9 favorite Ariana G, she returned $10.60 to win.

?This filly has been good all year,? said Smedshammer, who has won eight Breeders Crown trophies, but all with 3-year-olds or older. ?She just loves to chase down horses. Usually we don't (race 2-year-olds this time of year) but this filly has been good all year and the breed has changed a little bit the last few years. They get to their speed so quickly and this filly is very talented so I didn't see a reason not to give her a chance.?

Thats All Moni, a Jimmy Takter-trained daughter of Cantab Hall from the Pine Chip mare Mom?s Millionaire, grinded first over to the front and maintained control in a 1:54.1 mile to take the second of two $20,000 Breeders Crown eliminations.

Clearing the lead in :27.4, Thats All Moni was shuffled to third as Cameron Hill brushed to the lead, followed by Treviso, who led to the half in :55.3 She was pressured by Thats All Moni around the far turn and past three-quarters in 1:24.4 before settling for second in a stretch-long duel. Hillarmbro, Cameron Hill, and Evelyn also qualified for the final.

Owned by Brittany Farms, Marvin Katz, and Al Libfeld, Thats All Moni won her fifth race in 10 starts, earning $220,773. She was driven by Tim Tetrick and paid $5.60 to win.

?[The race] definitely went the way I thought it was going to work out,? Tetrick said. ?That was one of her gamer efforts. She?s still green and has the talent to go with anybody, but she has to get the right trip. She raced really well.?

Frost Damage Blues, Lady Shadow w in pacing mare el imsby Frank Cotolo for Breeders Crown

In the first of two $20,000 Breeders Crown elims for the pacing mares at The Meadowlands on Friday (Oct. 21), Frost Damage Blues, driven by Brett Miller, finished second but was placed first for the 1:51.1 win.

Solar Sister, who finished first, was disqualified for interfering with Sassa Hanover, who broke stride just before finishing second in a gallop.

Sassa Hanover took the lead early and cut a slow :28.3 first quarter, while Solar Sister sat third, but only between fractions as Doug McNair took Solar Sister first-over and to the lead through the half-mile in :57.1. From there, Solar Sister refused a challenge by Katie Said and tipped three-quarters in 1:24.3. It was clear sailing from there while on the outside Frost Damage Blues took the stretch by storm to close to finish second. Trained by Tom Fanning, Frost Damage Blues is owned by William J. Augustine. She paid $10.00 for the win.

"I was hollering pull, her pull her," said Augustine. "Brett Miller was just sitting back and waiting. The race was so slow, even the announcer that was calling the race was saying how slow it was for the quality caliber of the horses. She's a fantastic mare, they're all great horses but she's a fantastic mare."

Divine Caroline was fourth, placed third, placed second, while Sassa Hanover was second, placed third, and Sassa Hanover was first, placed fourth. Katie Said qualified for the final by finishing fifth.

In the second of two $20,000 Breeders Crown elims for the pacing mares, Lady Shadow soared over the ?good? surface to handily win in 1:48.4.

Driven by Yannick Gingras for trainer Ronald Adams and owners D.C. Kryway, Carl Atley, Ed Gold and BFJ Stable, Lady Shadow sat third as Bedroomconfessions cut the first quarter in :26.4. Gingras tipped Lady Shadow out, brushed to control on top and began to draw away in :54 and 1:21.1 with Bedroomconfessions on her tail.

Those two put many lengths between them and the rest of the field and Lady Shadow kept eating real estate to put her four lengths away from Bedroomconfessions, who finished second. Regil Electra got third, Skippin By picked up a final berth finishing fourth and fifth was Bettor Be Steppin.

Lady Shadow paid $3.20 to win.

Harness Racing Update | 5 | October 22, 2016

After having the best year of his life, up-and-coming Ontario-based driver Jonathan Drury is now hoping shoulder surgery won?t stall his career momentum too much. Drury is scheduled to have the surgery Nov. 25 to fix what he calls a ?long-term injury.? Doctors have warned him he could be out of the sulky for between three and six months.

?I?m hoping it?s three,? Drury said. ?As it is it?s going to stop my year. The year has been great, so far, and it would have been nice to race that last month to see where I would have finished off, but that?s where it?s stopping for now.?

Through Thursday (Oct. 20), the 27-year-old Drury had already surpassed his career best earnings total, with more than $1.9 million earned (by USTA accounting) ?

Standardbred Canada figures, which consider Canadian and U.S. currency at par, have Drury at over $2.5 million ? in just over 1,000 starts.

He?s also starting to drive high-profile horses in big stakes.

A week ago, Drury won the biggest race of his nine-year career when he piloted Arsenal Seelster to a 46-1 upset in the $250,000 Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Super Final for two-year-old pacing colts at Mohawk.

?I?ve never won anything like that and it was unexpected,? Drury said. ?I was just hoping I could race (Arsenal Seelster) along and things would unfold enough where I could close and get a piece. He blew right by them there, which was very surprising.?

Rising Star in the Northern Sk yAfter having his best year in the game ? including driving Betting Line and

winning his biggest race to date ? Ontario rising star Jonathan Drury is hoping shoulder surgery won?t curtail his career trajectory.

Jonathan Drury (show n driv ing in the Batt le of Waterloo at Grand River Racew ay in 2015) has had a career year h ighl ighted by a role driv ing Bett ing Line w hen David M i l ler w asn?t avai lable.

Harness Racing Update

Drury?s ascension has been helped considerably by getting regular drives for top Canadian trainers Carmen Auciello and Casie Coleman, including the latter?s star sophomore pacing colt Betting Line when David Miller could not make it to Toronto.

Coleman frequently praised Drury this year and said he earned the job by working for her in the mornings and helping to train Betting Line.

Getting to drive the son of Bettor?s Delight? Heather?s Western has been the thrill of a lifetime for Drury. He said he has never sat behind a better horse in his life.

?It seems like there?s no bottom to him. There?s been times that even when I?ve driven him that I thought, ?It?s going to be tough to catch them from here? and he does it from ease. He knows where the wire is and he wants to get there first,? Drury said of the pacer who posted his 14th straight victory last Saturday winning his Super Final with Miller aboard.

Drury drove Betting Line six times in 2016. The pacer, a son of Bettor?s Delight out of Heather?s Western, earned $162,080 ($212,000 by SC accounting) with Drury at the controls.

?I had never won any (OSS) Golds or anything like that until I got to drive him this year. I got to win the Somebeachsomewhere with him and three Golds,? Drury said. ?That was quite an experience. I think when people can see you can drive a horse like that, or someone gives you a chance to drive a horse like that, it kind of leads to more opportunity.?

Drury said getting the first call on many horses for trainer Carmen Auciello, and occasionally driving for three-time defending Canadian trainer of the year Richard Moreau, likely led to the drive on Arsenal Seelster for trainer Colin Johnson.

?I picked up a lot of different horses that somebody maybe picked off. Maybe I wouldn?t have got to drive them a year ago, but I?m kind of an option for them when they needed somebody this year,? said Drury, who has won a little more than 1,000 races lifetime in more than 8,400 attempts. His career earnings are just shy over $10.5 million (just over $12 million according to Standardbred Canada).

Yet, no horse he?s driven has come close to Betting Line, who has earned nearly $1.5 million this year and almost $1.9 million lifetime and sports a mark of 1:47.2 earned on Pocono?s five-eighths mile oval.

?I?ve driven a lot of horses and he?s unbelievable,? Drury said. ?It?s really fun. When you tip him out, it?s just like a blur going by them. It?s crazy? Everything about him is impressive. He?s an unbelievable animal and I?ve never sat

behind anything like him.

?You would think at a point he would start to get a little tired, but it seems like he keeps getting stronger. It?s really unbelievable. I trained him at Mohawk last week in :52, home in :26. It was just like a walk in the park for him, all by himself. It was a cooler morning. It?s really scary what he can do? I drove Vegas Vacation for (Coleman) a couple of times and he was a really nice horse that had a quick turn of foot, but I don?t even think that they can compare to what this other horse can do.?

Drury said he grew up around horses working in his parents? stable.

?I used to always come in when I wasn?t in school,? Drury said. ?When I finished school, I originally planned to take a year off and then go to college or university to be an architect and that changed quickly. | lost interest (in school). I worked for a few different people ? I worked for Anthony MacDonald for a bit and after that I worked for Tony Montini for awhile ? and ended up getting my (driving) license and it kind of took off from there.

?I?ve been working for Casie in the morning for five or six years. It gets me out of the house in the morning and I?ve been able to sit behind a lot of great horses just at her barn.?

Drury said he hasn?t set any particular career goals, other than to just keep improving year over year and ?hopefully make next year better than this year and keep on progressing. Hopefully I can pick up more drives in the Sires Stakes and some of the bigger races when they?re (in Toronto).?

Yet, in the short-term, that career trajectory will level off while Drury is recovering from surgery.

?(My shoulder injury) was starting to take its toll on me. I need to get it fixed before it?s too late to fix it and I end up missing more time than I need to,? Drury said. ?You definitely need that shoulder to drive and it?s just starting to wear on me now.?

Harness Racing Update

M y Federal Caseby Trey Nosrac

Cheating in harness racing has been going on since the days of Ben Hur. For those of us on the outside, how to level the playing field is hard to say, but in any large group of people, there are always at least a few who will not play fair. Catching miscreants and prosecuting shady characters must be as much fun as skiing in a fetid swamp.

We need motivated and financed sheriffs or the vast majority of good eggs in our sport are toast. To do my little part in this never-ending battle, I place racetracks on my ?no fly? zone. Bogus trainers and fishy trends compel me to send my wagering donations to tracks like the Meadowlands where I feel more comfortable going broke.

Channeling my cash is not much of a solution. While waiting for my next passenger, I solve every problem known to man. I have a few minutes to opine on whacking moles that don?t play fair in our sport. Let me use what is called an allegory, or maybe it is a metaphor or maybe a diphthong? whatever? when you say one thing to make a point about something else.

I am considering breaking the law for financial reasons.

The money I earn from my Lyft job does not leave me much to gamble on harness horse races or to finance my dreams of owning harness race horses. After the local government takes a slice of each fare, the company takes a slice and the state takes a slice, my remaining slice is as thin as a bowl of stone soup.

I have a scheme to rectify this problem, but it is dicey.

I drive in a community that I am not naming for purposes of possible incrimination. Let?s just say that there are lots of retirees, a dozen huge mobile home developments, a massive shopping mall, 15 taverns and about five policemen. We do not have a racetrack and that is a bummer.

I have enough regular passengers that I could poach my riders and go private. Give them my cell phone, and maybe even give them a lower rate because the government and the company would be out of my loop and out of my hair.

Now, I would like to strain and call this idea entrepreneurial, but we all know that going off the grid in this manner is cheating the taxman and circumventing a few

rules. So what is stopping my visit to the dark side, why not just dash for the cash?

The whole balance of my decision is found in the wise words of my old buddy Sophocles who said in 450 BC: ?Laws can never be enforced unless fear supports them.?

My fear factor, and perhaps the fear factor of many horse trainers, is minimal. Who am I afraid of? My customers will be happy to get a better deal. My local authorities appear to be graduates of the Barney Fife Academy and will not put down their doughnuts to track down a rogue car service provider. The Lyft Company has hordes of drivers starting and leaving every week, so even if they get wind of my driving off the reservation, it is doubtful they will litigate to take control of my assets (a leased car and a vinyl heavy metal record collection). My reputation has long been lost.

So what makes me fearful about my move off the traditional straight and narrow to the dark side of the road? And what would make beards and chemists leery about plying their dark arts on the backstretch.

The Feds.

Should one of my riders drop a dime on my little nefarious driving scheme, those Federal government folks do not kid around. The Feds have tools, time, technology, staff and motivation to prosecute. When they drag someone to court, they almost always drag out a carcass. They gleefully send people to jail, and a few going to jail have a chilling effect on folks who dance a tad close to the line.

Now what does this have to do with my beloved harness racing? At this point, the Federal government does not pay much attention to horse racing. However, they soon might.

When commerce crosses state lines (and gambling is commerce) the enforcement and rules fall to the jurisdiction of the Federal government. In the dark ages, before the Internet, gambling was a state and local situation. In the digital world, state lines are fading. The Federal government is examining the concept of taking jurisdiction over Internet gambling. And they have very strong motivation, money.

Feds assuming control will find the games changing and the enforcement agencies changing chairs. People are leery about the Federal government sticking their noses into our businesses. If you are in dicey territory, federal regulations are an ominous shadow. A hungry prosecutor on the prowl for a rogue Lyft driver or a rogue horse chemist will not give a slap on the wrist; they will rip lungs out and drive around town holding them up for the public to see.

How could these new Federal sheriffs affect harness racing? Let me get back to my allegory or metaphor or diphthong. The fear of federal agencies will keep the Trey Transportation Operation on the straight and narrow road.

The fear of federal agencies might well be a huge asset for keeping the backstretch on the level.

Liv ingston captures Obrigado

Award-winning photographer Barbara Livingston recently spent time capturing photos of top older trotter Obrigado at Paul Kelley?s farm in Stillwater, NY.

Shown is the trotter with Kelley, caretaker Jenna Caligaris, plus the basset hound named Bailey and the shepherd named Julep.

Widger w ins eight at Hoosier Driver Sam Widger won eight of the 14 races at Hoosier Park Friday night (Oct. 21), tying the record for the most wins in one night in the track?s history shared by Eric Ledford (1999), Don Irvine Jr. (2003) and Trace Tetrick (2012).

?It?s kind of euphoric for me,? Widger said with a smile after win number eight. ?Did that really just happen? I am blessed and fortunate to have the opportunity to drive nice horses for great trainers.?

Widger is currently third on the leading driver standings at Hoosier Park for the 2016 season with 201 trips to the

winner?s circle behind Trace Tetrick, who leads all with 332 wins, and John DeLong in second with 282 victories.

Tonight, (Oct. 22), Widger will lead all drivers into round two of the 2016 All Star Driver Series after winning round one with 49 points. Saturday?s 14-race card will feature the second round of the five race challenge for Hoosier Park?s leading drivers with the winner awarded the dream prize of their choice, a $10,000 cash prize, an exotic vacation, or their favorite ?always wanted to have? toy.

Gural cal ls A tlantic Ci ty casino ow ners ?greedy pigs? Meadowlands owner Jeff Gural had some blunt words for Atlantic City casino owners this week according to a story in the Hudson County View written by Jeannette Josue.

During a breakfast presentation to the Bayonne Chamber of Commerce at the Gural-owned Winners Bayonne off-track wagering parlor, Gural said the ?eight greedy pigs? that own the Atlantic City casinos are ?only giving us $200 million in state gaming tax revenues.?

Gural also heavily criticized the New Jersey gaming tax rate of 9.6 per cent in comparison to the 40.2 per cent rate paid in Pennsylvania and said New Jersey collected only $230 million in gaming taxes compared to over $1 billion in Pennsylvania.

?What you have is that the casino industry in Atlantic City, basically takes the money that they make in Atlantic City and build casinos to compete with Atlantic City,? Gural said.

Josue wrote, ?To prove (Gural?s) point, he used the 2015 revenue of Harrah?s Philadelphia, which was $287 million with gaming taxes at $125 million an the effective tax rate of 44 per cent in 2015. For Atlantic City, Caesars was at $330 million, Harrah?s was at $208 million and Bally?s was at $370 million. While the total revenue of these three casino companies was a total of $908 million, the gaming taxes came out to only $85 million ? due to the tax rate of 9.4 per cent.?

Delmarvalous to stand at Winbak Delaw are In 2017, Winbak Farm will be welcoming Delmarvalous, p, 2, 1:52.3f; 3, 1:48.2 ($899,123), to the Winbak Farm of Delaware lineup.

The Badlands Hanover? Prymetyme Scootie son had a lucrative career that included wins at two in the Arden Downs Stakes and two Delaware Breeders finals. Early in the season, he finished second to Two Year Old Colt Pacer Of The Year, Sportswriter in both his Metro Pace and Nassagaweya eliminations. He was voted Delaware?s Two Year Old Pacing Colt Of The Year.

At 3, he came back strong and had wins in the Adios Final, Matron elimination and established his mark of 1:48.2 winning the Oliver Wendell Holmes. He also finished second in the Matron Final (to Horse Of The Year, Rock N Roll Heaven), and Progress Pace Final.

Delmarvalous retired and still remains the fastest horse sired by Badlands Hanover.

From just two limited crops of racing age in Pennsylvania, Delmarvalous is already the sire of 2016 PA Stallion Series Winner, Hes Marvalous, p, 2, 1:52f ($129,162), 2016 PA Fair Final Winner, Gemalous, p, 2, 1:59.2f -'16 ($32,298), & 2016 PA Stallion Series Winner, She?s So Marvelous, p, 2, 1:55.2f -'16 ($28,450).

?Winbak Farm is excited to have Delmarvalous standing in our Delaware lineup,? said Garrett Bell, Winbak Farm?s general manager.

His 2017 stud fee will be $3,000.

In 2017, Winbak Farm of Delaware?s Badlands Nitro, p, 2, 1:51.1f; 3, 1:50f ($1,597,638) will be taking a year off from breeding. He will be enjoying a year of relaxation at George Teague?s farm in Delaware.

Big M appl ies for 91 dates for '17 The Meadowlands has applied to the New Jersey Racing Commission requesting 91 racing dates for the 2017 live racing season.

Those dates include racing seven Thursday cards from Jan. 26 through March 9. The Meadowlands will also race four Thursday cards from Dec.8 through Dec. 29 in 2016.

Hopefully, there will be enough horses available to fill three days of racing. This decision was made in response to the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey (SBOA of NJ) requesting more live dates during that time period.

Jim Hardy w ins 3,000th race Veteran driver Jim Hardy scored the 3,000th victory of his career Thursday afternoon (Oct. 20) when he guided Eye See Now to an upset victory at Plainridge Park Casino.

?It feels good to reach the milestone,? Hardy said following a brief celebration in the winner?s circle. ?But it is even better to do it with my own horse.?

Hardy trains Eye See Now for Jim, David and Daniel Winske of nearby Marlborough, MA.

Hardy?s first driving win came with pacer Presumably Swift at Foxboro in 1986.

?The competition is so much tougher now, and there are some really nice horses racing here,? Hardy said. ?Instead of one or two horses that can go in each field it is more like five or six.?

Bongiorno posts 1,000th v ictory Driver Joe Bongiorno scored his 1,000th career victory Friday (Oct. 21) at Freehold Raceway guiding Fathers Amiga for trainer Chris Marino in 1:59.

Bongiorno, a 23-year-old native of Colts Neck, NJ, had his first pari-mutuel drive just five short years ago at this very facility with Mr. Bennett, a horse that landed Bongiorno in the winner?s circle.

Bongiorno comes from a family of Hall of Fame horsemen. He is the grandson of the late Harold (Sonny) Dancer and the son of Robert and Barbara Bongiorno. A graduate of Colts Neck High School, he began jogging horses at 14 years of age at Showplace Farms. He knew after his first time out on the track this is what he wanted to do with his life.

?Although every time I get to the winner?s circle it is an amazing accomplishment, it is extra special to win with a family-owned horse," Bongiorno said.
