VOLATILE BREEZES HOMEIN VANDERBILT

by Alan Carasso

Sent off the prohibitive 2-5 chalk while making his first

appearance in Grade I company, Three Chimneys Farm and

Phoenix Thoroughbreds= Volatile (Violence) fell out onto the

lead, enjoyed a soft time of things on the engine and turned it

on late to post a 1 1/4-length victory in the GI Alfred G.

Vanderbilt H. at Saratoga.

The Vanderbilt was reduced to a field of four by the gate

scratching of Lexitonian (Speightstown), who was unlikely to

have a say in the finish, but who may have set or otherwise

impacted the pace. The start of the race was further delayed by

Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect), who broke through the gate, but

was pulled up after galloping about a furlong and was passed fit

to run. The quartet broke as one, but with none of the horses

showing particularly keen early interest, Ricardo Santana, Jr.

took the bull by the horns and led the field through an opening

quarter in :23.46, a nearly unheard-of split for this level of

competition.

Chased around the turn by dual Saratoga Grade I winner Mind

Control (Stay Thirsty) and GISW Firenze Fire (Poseidon=s

Warrior) farther out, Volatile turned for home after a half in

:46.67 and dared them to match strides with him late.

MAXIMUM SECURITY GUTS IT OUT IN

DRAMATIC SAN DIEGO H. by Alan Carasso

It=s never easy being the hunted.

Making his first start since the federal indictment of his former

trainer Jason Servis and sent out for the first time by trainer Bob

Baffert, Eclipse Award winner Maximum Security (New Year=s

Day) looked destined for defeat in Saturday=s GII San Diego H.

But the 4-year-old, last seen winning the $20-million Saudi Cup

nearly five months ago, overcame some aggressive race riding

and perhaps some ring-rustiness to grab Midcourt (Midnight

Lute) to take it by a nostril.

AThat was crazy. I knew I didn=t have him really drummed up

for this race, we were going to use this to get ready for the next

one,@ said winning trainer Bob Baffert. ABut we=re learning about

the horse. He won today when he had every reason to get beat.

He=s such a fighter. I=m glad we got this over with and now he=s

in good shape.@ Cont. p5

Volatile | Sarah Andrew

A. G. Vanderbilt H. cont.

But as he had done in previous

victories in Oaklawn allowance

company Apr. 24 and in the Listed

Aristides S. at Churchill June 6, he

delivered a quick turn of foot and

covered the final two furlongs in a

career-best :22.94 to defeat a very

game Whitmore. Mind Control

held for third over Firenze Fire, the

four horses covered by two

lengths at the wire.

"For a Grade I sprint race to be

allowed that first quarter [:23.46

seconds] was very fortunate,@ said

trainer Steve Asmussen, winning

the Vanderbilt for the third time

(Majesticperfection, 2009; Justin Phillip, 2013). AI think the

anxious moments were all pre-race with the incident at the gate.

Once he was away from the gate smoothly and they threw up

the first quarter, he would be awfully hard to beat from there.@

Added Phoenix Thoroughbreds=s Amer Abdulaziz: AWe=ll need

to see how he comes out of this, but the future looks exciting.

Today=s win was an important one for his value as a stallion, but

he also proved he is one of the best sprinters in the country.

We=d love to give him a chance

to prove that. This is our first

Grade I winner with Steve and

we are delighted for him and his

team. Also massive

congratulations to our very good

friends and partners Three

Chimneys.@

Volatile, his sire=s most

expensive horse sold at public

auction when hammering for

$850,000 at Keeneland

September in 2017, was a debut

winner at Ellis Park last August

and was second in Churchill

allowance company the

following month before closing the season with a victory in

Louisville Nov. 3. He posted stalk-and-pounce successes in his

two aforementioned appearances this season while running up

the score to the tune of 15 1/2 lengths combined.

Volatile is the second Grade I-winning sprinter for his sire in

the last five weeks, joining >TDN Rising Star= No Parole, who

earned his wings in the Woody Stephens S. in similar front-

running fashion. Volatile, also the 24th top-level winner

produced by a daughter of the late Unbridled=s Song, is out of a

stakes-winning daughter of Lady Tak, who was conditioned by

Steve Asmussen to wins in this track=s GI Test S. and GI Ballerina

S. Lady Tak is also the dam of Japanese SW & GSP A Shin Spartan

(Zensational) as well as the very promising 3-year-old filly Casual

(Curlin). Melody Lady is the dam of the 3-year-old colt Soccer

Dad (Bayern), a $260,000 KEESEP yearling who was second in a

Del Mar maiden turf sprint in his lone trip to the races. Her 2-

year-old of this year is the Bayern colt Grendel and she

produced a filly by Army Mule this season.

Maximum Security | Horsephotos

San Diego H. cont. from p1

Given a positive ride from the gates by Abel Cedillo, subbing

for Luis Saez, Maximum Security led passing under the wire, but

Victor Espinoza on Midcourt was clearly intent on making the

lead and Cedillo allowed him to do so rounding the turn. No

sooner had that happened when Flavien Prat aboard Higher

Power (Medaglia d=Oro) decided to up the ante, sending his

mount quickly up outside of the favorite to put him in a pocket

at the six-furlong peg. Steadied at that point, Maximum Security

lost a couple of lengths and was ultimately steered into the

clear, but he was under a ride with fully four furlongs to race,

looking to have it all to do. Nevertheless, Maximum Security

continued to grind away and was more or less on even terms as

they hit the top of the lane. It looked as if he might edge clear,

but Midcourt--in receipt of five pounds--boxed on gamely inside,

only to be on the wrong end of the photo finish.

Winner of the GI Florida Derby and GI Haskell Invitational S.

either side of his GI Kentucky Derby demotion, Maximum

Security missed the GI Travers S. and GI Pennsylvania Derby, but

would go on to defeat older rivals in the GIII Bold Ruler H. and in

the GI Cigar Mile H., earning him the Eclipse. Connections

elected to skip the GI Pegasus World Cup in January in favor of

the Saudi Cup and he proved equal to the task, calling upon his

determination to account for another Midnight Lute offspring--

namely, champion Midnight Bisou--by three-parts of a length.

Pedigree Notes:

Maximum Security=s dam was acquired by Gary and Mary

West for $80,000 in foal to Pioneerof the Nile at Keeneland

November in 2014 and was sold to Korean interests for $11,000

carrying a full-sibling to the then unraced 2-year-old Maximum

Security, who would make a victorious debut in a maiden

$16,000 claimer about six weeks later. Cont. p6

What Starship Jubilee may have >lacked= in class entering a

clash with champion Sistercharlie in Saturday=s GII Ballston Spa

S. at Saratoga was potentially mitigated by the fact that she was

always going to hold a tactical advantage--positionally--given the

likely shape of the race. When the dust had settled after 8 1/2

furlongs, the blue-collar Florida-bred took full advantage to

cause a minor upset, as Sistercharlie could only finish a one-

paced third.

While Thais (Fr) (Rio de la Plata) parlayed pacemaker duties--

bar the GI Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Turf, from which she was

scratched--for Sistercharlie into a couple of Grade I placings over

the past couple of seasons, the new >rabbit= was the commonly

owned North Broadway (Quality Road). The latter was ridden for

speed by Tyler Gaffalione and opened up double digits down the

backstretch, but allowed to bowl along by her lonesome, she set

only sedate fractions. For her part, Starship Jubilee tossed her

head about passing under the wire for the first time, ultimately

coalescing and settling third, with Sistercharlie watching her

every move just behind her. The swoopers began to whittle

away at the deficit rounding the second turn, but while

Sistercharlie was first to get going, Starship Jubilee countered

with a quick turn of foot of her owne and ranged up three wide

looking dangerous off the home corner. Starship Jubilee hooked

up with Call Me Love about a furlong from the line and hung for

a few strides in the waning stages, but edged clear to score.

"I thought [jockey Javier] Castellano rode her perfectly,@ said

trainer Kevin Attard, saddling his first graded winner at the Spa.

AThat horse [North Broadway] opened up and did the job they

intended her to do and set the pace up for Sistercharlie. The

favorite didn't kick in and the one horse [Call Me Love] kept

battling back. It looked like we were safe and home, but the one

wouldn't lay down and made it a good fight to the finish.@

Third, beaten a half-length by the Brown-trained and

Stephanie Brant-owned Significant Form (Creative Cause), in this

event last year, Starship Jubilee earned a breakthrough Grade I

in the E.P. Taylor S., but was defeated at 1-2 over ground softer

than she prefers in the GIII Cardinal S. at Churchill in November.

She was perfect in three Florida starts over the winter, taking

the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf in January, the

GIII Suwannee River S. the following month and Tampa=s

GIII Hillsborough S. when last spotted Mar. 7. Cont. p7

race at the entrance to the straight, surging to the lead in upper

stretch before proving a facile winner. Guitty, last behind the

quick early tempo, was let loose by Juan Hernandez, circled up

outside of rivals turning for home and finished with good energy

to complete the exacta.

Acquired privately off a debut win at Golden Gate last

November, Laura=s Light was second to Alms (City Zip) in the

GIII Jimmy Durante S. over course and distance Nov. 30 before

defeating Croughavouke (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) in Santa Anita=s

Blue Norther S. Dec. 29. She added winning graded black-type in

the GIII Sweet Life S. over 5 1/2 panels Feb. 16, stubbed her toe

when fourth in the Mar. 14 Bourbonette Oaks over the Turfway

Poly and bounced back with a neck success in the

GIII Honeymoon S. in Arcadia May 30.

Well-bred Shirl=s Speight turned in one of the more impressive

debuts of 2020 when he demolished nine rivals in front-running

fashion over seven grassy furlongs here July 4, and the >TDN

Rising Star= handled two turns and Tapeta just as well Saturday

to make the grade in Woodbine=s GIII Marine S. Away well from

the outside seven post, the favorite was content to sit second

locked on to frontrunner Untitled (Khozan)=s right hip through

splits of :24.59 and :48.68. He was asked for more by Rafael

Hernandez heading into the bend, took over seemingly a bit

early midway around the turn but kept finding from there under

confident handling to cruise to an easy victory. Second choice

Lucky Curlin completed the exacta with Dotted Line checking in

third.

ALike I said before, he=s a horse with a tremendous amount of

ability,@ said Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield, who was

celebrating his record fifth Marine victory but first since 1993.

AHe just had that one race and he never learned anything from

that race. He did get the experience from it, so today was going

to be more interesting... He settled down and rated. Once he

got to the five-eighths pole, I was pretty sure he=d just keep

galloping around there. He=s a very nice horse, for sure.@

Attfield has had high hopes for his budding superstar since last

year: AI=ve been excited about this horse from last year, to be

honest with you. He was always the workmate with [2019

Canadian champion 2-year-old] Mr. Hustle (Declaration of

War)... and [Shirl=s Speight] always looked like he might be the

stronger of the two, and just sprinting. I said, >He=ll stay. This

horse will stay.= I was pretty sure he=d stay. But I had to put him

away because he got jarred up and he needed some time. I

couldn=t wait to get him back this spring because I=ve been

thinking about this horse all winter.@

One of three fillies in the race looking to give the Mark Casse

barn three consecutive wins in the GIII Selene S., Gary Barber=s

Two Sixty was given a well-rated ride from the front by Emma-

Jayne Wilson and held off 84-1 rank outsider Saratoga Vision for

a first graded-stakes success.

Kicked away from gate six, Two Sixty had company to her

inside in the form of two-time stakes winner Owlette, but she

was able to clear rounding the first turn, pricking her ears and

taking a breather entering the backstretch. The race was won

over the next internal four furlongs, as Wilson successfully

backed down whatever pace there was, clocking that distance in

:49.24 for an overall three-quarters time of 1:13.36. Turning

back a challenge from Owlette in upper stretch, Two Sixty was

asked for one final sprint and she was always holding the game

rally of Saratoga Vision to the wire. Favored Merveilleux

(Paynter) was wide the trip and boxed on to finish a close

fourth.

Winner of the My Dear Girl S. at Gulfstream last September,

Two Sixty was last of nine in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies,

but bounced back two starts later to land Tampa=s seven-furlong

Gasparilla S. Jan. 18. Fifth in the Feb. 8 Suncoast S. going two

turns in Oldsmar Feb. 8, the Florida-bred was ninth against older

state-bred females in the Musical Romance S. at Gulfstream and

was exiting a fourth to Owlette when making her Tapeta debut

in the June 13 Star Shoot S.

Pedigree Notes:

A $72,000 OBS October yearling, Two Sixty was hammered

down for--you guessed it--$260,000 at last year=s OBS March

sale, making her the most expensive of 22 juveniles for her now-

expatriated sire to go under the hammer last year. Uncaptured

was also conditioned by Casse and was sold late last year to

continue his stud career in South Korea. Cont. p12

HALLADAY FACES FIVE IN BERNARD BARUCH

Riding a two-race winning streak, Harrell Ventures' Halladay

(War Front) will try to take it to the next level in Sunday=s GII

Bernard Baruch S. at Saratoga. Victorious in Gulfstream=s

Tropical Park Derby last December, the grey finished fourth--

beaten two lengths--in the GIIII Tampa Bay S. Feb. 8 before

returning with a three-length score in a one-mile Gulfstream

optional claimer Apr. 4. Most recently, Halladay went

gate-to-wire over subsequent GI United Nations winner

Aquaphobia (Giant=s Causeway) and stablemate Social Paranoia

(Street Boss), who took the GIII Poker S. at Belmont Park two

starts later.

"So far, the turf course has not been kind to horses close to

the pace," said trainer Pletcher, who won the Baruch in 2012

with Dominus. AThat's really my only concern. The horse is

training super and we're excited about Sunday. He's in great

form and seems to be steadily improving. Obviously, he took to

the turf at Gulfstream quite well so I'm hoping that he can apply

that to this turf course.@

Jockey Luis Saez was aboard for Halladay's two latest winning

efforts and retains the mount from post six.

Trainer Chad Brown is represented by a pair of contenders in

the 8 1/2 furlong test--the lightly raced Good Governance (GB)

(Kingman {GB}) and graded-stakes winner Olympico (Fr)

(Rajsaman {Fr}). Campaigned by Seth Klarman's Klaravich

Stables, Good Governance broke his maiden last August over the

Spa's inner turf before finishing a close-up second in the

GIII Saranac S. Benched for the remainder of the season, the

English-bred registered a 3 3/4-length win in a Belmont

allowance June 26.

AHe's lightly raced, but he's very talented," said Brown.

"Hopefully he's up to the challenge. He has a nice race under his

belt and he looks good."

The bay=s regular pilot, Irad Ortiz, Jr., reunites with the 4-year-

old and will attempt to collect his third Bernard Baruch triumph.

Stablemate Olympico will attempt to record his first win since

lighting up the tote board at 18-1 in his North American debut in

last year's GII Fort Marcy S. at Belmont Park. Owned by Michael

Dubb, Madaket Stables and Wonder Stables, the 5-year-old

finished fifth in this race one year ago before finishing runner-up

in the GII Knickerbocker S. over the inner turf at Belmont

Oct. 14.

HOROLOGIST CO-OWNER BANNED FOR

APPEARING IN WINNER=S CIRCLE by Bill Finley

Cameron Beatty, a co-owner of Horologist (Gemologist), has

been banned from Monmouth Park for the remainder of the

2020 meet after he appeared in the winner=s circle following her

win in the June 18 GIII Molly Pitcher S. Because of the

coronavirus, Monmouth is not allowing owners in the winner=s

circle or in the paddock.

Dennis Drazin, who heads the management team that runs

Monmouth, said that, for now, the suspension means only that

Beatty is not allowed on the premises. However, he said further

disciplinary actions could be taken after reviewing whether or

not Beatty has also been violating rules by going on the

backstretch.

AWe have rules and they have to be followed,@ Drazin said.

AWe have strict COVID-19 protocols that we submitted to the

state and they submitted them to the department of health and

they were signed off on by the racing commission and the

governor=s office. We were told we need to enforce our rules.

Here you have an owner that decided to disregard the rules. He

admits he disregarded the rules. It=s not like he says he didn=t

know. He deliberately violated the rules.@

Horses and riders break from Woodbine=s gate June 6 | Michael Burns

Beatty Banned From Monmouth cont.

Beatty tells a different story, that he was not aware of the

rules and was simply caught up in the moment after the horse

he owns along with Parkland Thoroughbreds, Medallion Racing

and Abbondanza Racing, LLC, won an important race.

A[Monmouth Racing Secretary] John Heims told me that I put

the sport of horse racing in New Jersey at risk,@ Beatty said. AI

didn=t intend to do that at all. I went down to the area of the

winner=s circle and I was excited. They told me grab your horse

and bring her into winner=s circle and I did that.@

Drazin was not sympathetic.

AHe=s gone out and posted things on social media and seems to

be blaming everyone but himself,@ he said. ABut he=s the one

who violated the rules.@

Beatty, 28, acknowledges that he should have read up on the

protocols in place at Monmouth, which are posted on the track=s

website, but insisted he did not intentionally break any rules.

AI=m not the type of person who starts trouble or ever gets into

trouble or breaks a rule,@ he said. AI try to do the right thing

when no one is looking.@

Beatty and Drazin also disagree on how the process unfolded.

Beatty said he asked Heims for a hearing and that Heims told

him not to bother because there was no chance the suspension

would be overturned. Drazin says that Beatty declined to have a

hearing.

AWe first wrote to him and offered him an opportunity to

come in and discuss it,@ Drazin said. AHe elected not to. He

admitted he violated our rules and told John Heims to do what

he had to do.@

AThey said I wanted no part of a discussion or wanted no part

of a hearing and that is completely false,@ Beatty said. AIt makes

me sick to my stomach because Dennis Drazin is someone with a

ton of authority and I=m just a little guy here. I=m trying to do

right thing for the industry and Jersey-bred racing, which is one

of the reasons we brought Horologist back, to give a Jersey-bred

a chance to win a graded stakes. I want a hearing. I want to give

my side of the story.@

Drazin said that, in the aftermath of the incident, he heard

from several people that Beatty had been violating additional

rules by sneaking onto the Monmouth backstretch, which could

lead to additional sanctions.

AWe=ve told him he=s not allowed here for the balance of the

2020 meet,@ Drazin said. ASince he started posting things on

social media, I have gotten a number of calls suggesting he=s

been violating our rules and sneaking on to the backside. I don=t

know if that is accurate or not. We=re going to have to have a

hearing on that.@

Drazin added that an additional penalty could be that Beatty

will not be allowed to race anymore horses during the meet.

Beatty said that because of the incident, Horologist is no

longer being considered for the Aug. 30 Charles B. Hesse III H.

for New Jersey breds.

AMe and my partners agreed after this happened that we=re

not going to run here her in the Hesse,@ he said. AThis has put a

bad taste in my mouth and makes me take a step back. I=m a big

believer that the punishment should fit the crime. I didn=t

commit a crime. It was just me, the jockey and the horse in the

winner=s circle.@

WOODBINE=S MINIMUM WEIGHT RAISED

TO 118

The minimum weight for jockeys will be raised to 118 pounds

at Canada=s Woodbine Racetrack, effective Thursday, Aug. 6, in

conjunction with Condition Book 4. Woodbine Entertainment

made the announcement Saturday in consultation with the

Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association of Ontario

(HBPA) with a statement that Athe health and welfare of our

jockeys was the driving factor for this decision, and the new

base weight aligns with racing jurisdictions in Kentucky, Florida,

and New York.@

Depending on conditions and age, top weights will be up to

125 pounds. Stakes and handicap races will still be subject to

assigned weights by Woodbine=s racing secretary.

PROMINENT OWNER, BUSINESSMAN JON

KELLY DIES

Jon S. Kelly, a successful California businessman who

maintained Thoroughbred racing operations all over the world,

passed away Saturday morning at his home in Tres Palomas in

Rancho Santa Fe. He celebrated his 84th birthday July 24 and

passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer. Kelly had

been in hospice care and several family members, including his

wife, Sarah, were at his side at the time of his death.

Born in Berkeley and schooled in the east and at the University

of California--Berkeley, Kelly entered the broadcasting business,

founding Kelly Broadcasting Company and later founded and ran

Summit Broadcasting Radio Company. He owned television

stations in Seattle and Sacramento. He was also a successful

banker, having founded River City Bank in the state capitol and

was also a successful real estate executive.

A horse owner since the 1960s, Kelly has raced horses in

England, Ireland and Australia in addition to the U.S. He most

notably raced MGISW Borrego (El Prado {Ire}) with trainer Beau

Greely and also had horses with Bob Baffert, Richard Mandella

and Christophe Clement. Gingham (Quality Road), a horse raced

by Sarah Kelly and Jane Wiltz, won the Angels Flight S. just last

month at Santa Anita for Baffert. Kelly and his wife also

campaigned Red Vine (Candy Ride {Arg}), a stakes winner and

runner-up in the GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile and GI Cigar Mile H.,

with Clement.

Kelly also maintained racing stables in Australia with Gai

Waterhouse and in Ireland with Jessie Harrington. Sarah Kelly=s

Cayenne Pepper (Ire) (Australia {GB}) was runner-up in the

G1 Irish Oaks July 18. Kelly, in conjunction with Reg Inglis and

Paul Frampton, signed for an A$2-million son of I Am Invincible

(Aus) top the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in

Queensland, Australia.

"He was quite a guy," said Dr. Greg Ferraro, chairman of the

California Horse Racing Board and a longtime Kelly friend. "He

could make anyone laugh. He always lifted your spirits."

Ferraro told of business associates Kelly had worked with 30

and 40 years ago writing him letters recently sending thanks for

his council and guidance and how it had shaped their careers

and lives. He spoke personally of Kelly sending him to a

Louisville hospital for a life-saving operation, then make a huge

donation to the hospital in Ferraro's name.

"He didn't make it in his name, which he should have," said

Ferraro, "but that was John. He did so many good things for so

many people and he never bragged or looked for credit. He just

was a good person who did good things. He was special."

Kelly is survived by his wife and six children, as well as many

grandchildren.

Those wishing to make a donation in his name are encouraged

to do so at two of his favorite projects--the Center for Equine

Health at the UC Davis School for Veterinary Medicine or the

Gregson Foundation, which services backstretch workers and

their families.

At his request, there will be no services.

Vertical Threat | Benoit Photo

Don Juan Kitten | Sarah Andrew

Vertical Threat turned in his second dominant performance on

the dirt while handling his class test with aplomb Saturday at Del

Mar. Late on the scene to be sixth in a turf sprint at Santa Anita

May 23, the bay broke through by six lengths at Los Alamitos

June 27, good for an 89 Beyer Speed Figure. Made the second

choice behind GIII Lazaro Barrera S. runner-up Ragtime Blues in

this field of four, Vertical Threat broke well but allowed the

favorite to clear off as he sat second while off the inside. He

could wait no more into the turn and poked a head in front

midway on the bend before beginning to edge away after a half

in :45.46. Ragtime Blues had no rebuttal from there, and Vertical

Threat cantered home in impressive fashion. The winner was

produced by a half-sister to SW and GSP Bee Cee Cee

NOTARY (c, 2, Street Sense--Ellesmere {SP}, by Tabasco Cat)

checked in fifth going six panels in his unveiling at Churchill

Downs June 27 and was given a 4-1 chance stretching to a mile

here. Tracking from second through :47.74 opening half-mile,

the bay took control on the backstretch run and kicked clear in

the lane to score. Call Papa (Dialed In) kept after Notary in the

lane, but the winner kept on finding to hold him at bay by 1 1/4

lengths. The winner is a half to Clement Rock (Strong Hope),

MSW-Can, SW-USA, $300,351; Bridgetown (Speightstown),

GSW-Can, GSW-USA, $993,700; and Carnacks Choice (Carson

NATHAN DETROIT (c, 2, Union Rags--Gracie Square, by

Awesome Again), sporting a three-furlong bullet in :35 3/5

(1/18) on the worktab at Keeneland July 12, upset this big field

to graduate at odds of 12-1 at first asking. He broke well from

his inside draw and had to tap on the brakes heading into the

clubhouse turn. The gray found a good spot in third from there,

was tipped out three deep on the far turn, hit the front at the

top of the stretch and stayed on to graduate by 3/4 of a length

over Private Island (Bodemeister). Gracie Square, a half-sister to

leading sire War Front, who carried Joe Allen=s silks to a win in

Saratoga=s GII Alfred G. Vanderbilt Breeders' Cup H., had a filly

by Uncle Mo in 2019 and a filly by Munnings this year. She was

bred back to Tapit. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $22,200. Click for

Enable (GB) winning her third King George | Racing Post

THREE KING GEORGES FORTHE BRILLIANT ENABLE

Ascot=s promised match race failed to materialise on Saturdayas Khalid Abdullah=s epoch-defining Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire})brushed aside the Ballydoyle contingent with an ease rarelyseen on this exalted stage. Forcing her way into history as thefirst to win three renewals of the Ascot centerpiece, theJuddmonte regina was at her exuberant best with FrankieDettori at pains to contain her from the outset of the G1 KingGeorge VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco S., a Breeders= Cup >Winand You=re In= event to the GI Breeders= Cup Turf. As shesauntered behind Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) with her well-matched rider content to allow last year=s G1 Irish Derby hero asmany lengths as he could take in the back straight, a look at themare and rider=s body language said all that needed to be saideven before the trio made the home straight. This Berkshirestrip of yardage has been graced by great pugilistic encounterssuch as Grundy-Bustino, but on this day it served only as aprocession strip for its most accomplished summer monarch. After Dettori had taken down his second pair of goggles andindulged in a lingering glance back to the struggling Japan (GB)(Galileo {Ire}) passing two out, the 4-9 favourite was finally letdown for that oh-so-familiar power surge. Yet another suprememoment denied a suitably populated attendance this year, her 5 1/2-length dismissal of Sovereign was nevertheless a definingone in the turf=s annals. The fact that Japan wound up 16 1/2lengths back despite being perfectly-tuned for the match istestament to that. Cont. p3

MAGICAL DISPLAY IN THE OFFING Avoiding her arch-foe Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) at Ascot,

Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is kept to home soil to extend her

awe-inspiring record in domestic races in Sunday=s G1 Tattersalls

Gold Cup at The Curragh. With the race open to 3-year-olds in

this unusual year but drawing only one which is her stable=s

Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Coolmore=s mare supreme looks to

have a straightforward task in accomplishing a ninth success

from 12 starts in Ireland. Her latest, in the course-and-distance

G1 Pretty Polly S. June 28, was arguably her finest as she was

giving 12 pounds weight-for-age and a 4 1/2-length beating to

the subsequent G1 Irish Oaks runner-up Cayenne Pepper (Ire)

(Australia {GB}). Last year=s G1 English and Irish Champion S.

heroine has five victories at the top level to boast of, including in

this last year and her odds reflect the prospect of her making it

six here. AShe is very well and we=ve been very happy with her

since her last run,@ Aidan O=Brien said of the 5-year-old, who will

have to wait a bit longer for a rematch with the Juddmonte

mare.

AMagical and Japan were being trained for the King George and

you=re never sure what is going to happen, but the two of them

seem to have come to this weekend very well. Magical was

happy to stay at home and run on a track that she knows

without having to travel--it looks like the race is going to suit her

lovely. She=s only had the one run this year, whereas Japan has

had the two runs and the King George was a race we had our

eye on with him for a long time. The Tattersalls Gold Cup is a

great race to have at the Curragh, and it=s a lovely race for

Magical ahead of the autumn.@

Joseph O=Brien saddles Lloyd Williams= admirable Buckhurst

(Ire) (Australia {GB}), who beat Magical=s stablemate Sir

Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in the G3 Alleged S. over this track

and trip June 27 and his level of consistency could easily see him

pull off a group 1 placing.

Enable wins her third King George, cont. from p1

Trainer John Gosden was fully aware of the historical context

of this achievement in the immediate aftermath. AI was

expecting to see that, but life can be full of disappointments,@ he

said. AI remember Angel Penna and Pawneese, Zilber and Dahlia

and to win this three times having come back from injury--she=s

quite some racemare. I find the responsibility quite enormous

and it weighs heavy, but what a pleasure to be around a race

mare like that.@ An expectedly-emotional Dettori, who was

joining Lester Piggott on seven King Georges, added, AIt=s never

been done before, so now we must try the impossible and win

three Arcs. My favourite girl--she=s no spring chicken, but she

made it look so easy. She has touched my heart.@

This 70th renewal in a year that will always be remembered

was staged in the midst of a rainstorm, which was fitting as

Enable first came to prominence in a much more dramatic

electric version when powering to victory in the 2017 G1 Epsom

Oaks, the first of 11 at this exalted level. While she will not get

to the 25 secured by Winx (Aus) or probably even the 15 of

Black Caviar (Aus) or 14 of Goldikova (Ire) before retirement

beckons, Enable was going one better than the operation=s

totemic Frankel (GB) and the past dual King George heroine

Dahlia on a Saturday afternoon marked forever by an outlandish

show of transcendence. All lingering doubts as to where her

level had got to following a shock defeat in her attempt at a

third G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe and more greatly-anticipated

reversal at the hands of the impressive Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi

{Ire}) in the July 5 G1 Eclipse S. at Sandown were banished here.

When she was here for the first time three years ago, she was

running at a stone advantage due to weight-for-age over Ulysses

(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and co and that had shrunk to just a three-

pound sex allowance 12 months ago as she upstaged Crystal

Ocean (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in a tight contest. Both were

staged on good-to-soft ground after significant rain and

although the weather turned again to make it three wet

renewals for the Juddmonte star, the late onstage of the rain

meant that the surface was still on the fast side. Her winning

time of 2:28.92 confirmed that these are her ideal conditions,

with her previous King Georges won in 2:36.22 in 2017 and

2:32.42 last year. She is still the beneficiary of an allowance

which is not only unnecessary but also unfairly profitable

concerning a mare who is the physical match of any older male

in training, but her dominance in this particular affair far

exceeded a three-pound gift.

AShe had trained beautifully for this,@ Gosden added. AI was

clear she wasn=t tuned up properly for the Eclipse, but she=s

back in top order, there=s no doubt about that. It was a small but

elite field today. There aren=t that many about once Ghaiyyath

elected to go to York, and the Oaks and Derby winners live at

Ballydoyle. To that extent, the best were on show. With Anthony

Van Dyck not there, it was obvious Sovereign would set a solid

pace, not a mad one. Given Japan has won a Juddmonte

International over 10 furlongs, he was always going to ride him

to beat us for toe, but it went perfectly. I=m always worried here

when you get rain on quick ground, because they can lose their

hind legs but thankfully that didn=t happen.@

Gosden=s continued his race analysis, AWilliam [Buick] just

went and then built it, built it, built it all the way. He actually got

his fractions perfect, as he has stayed on well to finish second. I

think it was a great run from the second and I think we have

probably stretched the stamina of the third, but I wouldn=t

know. They are three proper ones and she came here and did it.

It has not been easy this year--as I have been clear with

everyone--getting her to race-fitness, but the Eclipse really

brought her on. The way she has trained, I was hoping that she

would do a Montjeu--I remember him imperiously winning a

King George for John Hammond. I thought there was a chance,

with the way she was training, she just might do that. There was

a hint of that, nothing quite so spectacular, but a hint of it

because they are group one horses.@

Page 35: IN VANDERBILT DRAMATIC SAN DIEGO H. by Alan Carasso · Day) looked destined for defeat in Saturday=s GII San Diego H. But the 4-year-old, last seen winning the $20-million Saudi Cup

TDN EUROPE • PAGE 3 OF 16 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 26 JULY 2020

Enable | Edward Whitaker/Racing Post

AShe has enormous mental strength. When Prince Khalid asked

me last year that he was thinking about keeping her in training

for one more year, I said that she adores training. She loves

going out there and carries herself magnificently--she is a very

proud person--and I think to that extent, she has made my job

possible. I think by not putting too many miles on the clock, we

have kept that freshness and exuberance and that appetite.@

Enable is likely to reappear at York=s Ebor Festival next month

en route to a return to ParisLongchamp, but Gosden is undecided

as to which race the 6-year-old will take part in. With the

G1 Yorkshire Oaks set to feature the G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Love

(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a tantalising showdown could be on the cards

if she is steered back in the direction she took in 2019. AYork has

always been on the agenda and there are two races [the

G1 Juddmonte International and Yorkshire Oaks]. We=ll look at

both, as we did last year,@ he added. AYork could be really exciting,

with an exceptional Oaks winner heading there as well.@

Gosden also paid tribute to the world=s leading owner-

breeder. APrince Khalid is a magnificent owner and a passionate

horseman,@ he said. AHe knows his pedigrees and it was his

decision and his decision alone to keep her in training. I am lucky

to have trained for him for nearly 40 years, he totally under-

stands his horses and he clearly felt this was a filly who could do

it again, with the Arc just slipping through our hands last year.@

Pedigree Notes This came 10 days after Enable=s 3-year-old half-sister Portrush

(GB) (Frankel {GB}) broke her maiden at Yarmouth, making a

winner of every runner that Concentric (GB) (Sadler=s Wells) has

produced so far. Her first black-type performer was Contribution

(GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), who was third in the G2 Prix de

Pomone and G3 Prix Allez France, while after Enable there has

been the G3 Musidora S. runner-up Entitle (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

Aspetar=s trainer Roger Charlton | Racing Post

ASPETAR TURNS ON THE STYLE AT YORK Saturday=s G2 Sky Bet York S. had the look of a competitive

affair beforehand and there was no fluke in the dominant

success of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani=s Aspetar (Fr)

(Al Kazeem {GB}) despite his odds of 11-1 suggesting otherwise.

Successful in last year=s G1 Preis von Europa and G2 Grand Prix

de Chantilly, the 5-year-old had

put in a highly creditable

comeback performance when

second in Sandown=s Listed

Gala S. July 5 and took the

requisite step forward to put

some smart rivals to the sword

here. Anchored in last early by

a confident Jason Watson as

the ultimately-disappointing

Elarqam (GB) (Frankel {GB})

attempts to dictate, the bay

tanked into contention moving

notably the best in the straight

and was in command with

1 1/2 furlongs remaining.

Despite the game effort in pursuit of Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper)

to keep him honest, he was away and gone and at the line had

1 1/2 lengths to spare over the strong closer Fox Chairman (Ire)

(Kingman {GB}), with half a length between him and Lord

Glitters who was honouring his late owner Geoff Turnbull with a

typically tenacious display.

AWe=ve always liked him and he has become more relaxed at

home and matured plenty,@ Watson said. AHe=s not always the

most straightforward, but he put the race to bed quickly. He=s

quite versatile, from a mile to a mile and a half and is a well-built

small horse with a great turn of foot. That=s not always the case

with some of these middle-distance horses and it plays into our

hands. It was a competitive race today and I didn=t think he=d

win like he did, but he=s obviously improved massively.@

Kept to a slower surface in his formative period, Aspetar who

had captured the 11-furlong Listed Cocked Hat S. at Goodwood

as a 3-year-old was allowed to tackle faster conditions in the

Grand Prix de Chantilly and relished them to register a career-

best in that 12-furlong contest on the Prix du Jockey Club

undercard. Fourth later that month in the G1 Grand Prix de

Saint-Cloud, he stayed at a

mile and a half to land the

Preis von Europa at Cologne in

September and run 13th in

the Dec. 8 G1 Hong Kong

Vase. Just denied by

Godolphin=s potentially top-

class Magny Cours (Medaglia

d=Oro) in the 10-furlong Gala

at Sandown, he had Fox

Chairman behind and also the

subsequent Listed Steventon

S. winner Global Giant (GB)

(Shamardal) in a race that is

standing up to scrutiny.

Roger Charlton=s son and

assistant Harry said, ALast time

at Sandown taught us that he has got an electric turn of foot.

Jason will admit himself that he went a bit early at Sandown and

he said he surprised him how quickly he ran past a pretty good

field and then got tired and wandered before being beaten by a

pretty good horse of Andre Fabre=s. I think Jason would say he

probably got there too soon again, but he got the job done and

he was impressive. It is possible we could go back to the [G1]

Juddmonte [International]. We looked at some of the German

races he could have run in, but the prize money levels have

been decimated. We are kind of pot-hunting, with him being a

gelding. I suspect the owners= aim will be to end up in Qatar for

the big races at the end of the year, so we will build towards

that.@

Magical heads the Tattersalls Gold Cup, cont. from p1

If there is a suprise package in the line-up, it could be Zhang

Yuesheng=s June 12 G2 Mooresbridge S. winner Leo De Fury (Ire)

(Australia {GB}) who looked a different proposition when

hammering Ballydoyle=s smart Fleeting (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) by

three lengths in that 10 1/2-furlong prep here.

Munich=s G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis shares the same status as

the Tattersalls Gold Cup, but it will take considerably less to win

which is good news for Godolphin=s Barney Roy (GB)

(Excelebration {Ire}) and Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez=s

Patrick Sarsfield (Fr) (Australia {GB}). The former, who took the

G1 Jebel Hatta at Meydan Mar. 7, was third in the G1 Prince of

Wales=s S. over this mile-and-a-quarter trip at Royal Ascot June

17, while the quick-progressing Patrick Sarsfield comes into this

on the back of an authoritative success in the nine-furlong

G3 Meld S. at Leopardstown July 11.

ABarney Roy put up a decent performance on ground that was

slower than ideal in the Prince of Wales=s Stakes,@ Charlie

Appleby said. AHe came out of the race well and this has always

been the target since. He goes into this race in good shape and a

repeat of his runs so far this year should make him the one to

beat.@

In Ascot=s G3 Betfred Valiant Fillies= S. over a mile, Billesdon

Brook (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) looks for compensation for

her neck defeat in Newmarket=s G1 Falmouth S. July 10 in which

she split Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Terebellum (Ire)

(Sea the Stars {Ire}). She encounters Lael Stable=s unbeaten and

still unexposed Miss O Connor (Ire) (Roderic O=Connor {Ire}),

who was last seen taking the G3 Prix Perth at Saint-Cloud in

October. AIt=s a lovely race for her and she=s in great nick,@

trainer Richard Hannon said of Billesdon Brook.

Page 40: IN VANDERBILT DRAMATIC SAN DIEGO H. by Alan Carasso · Day) looked destined for defeat in Saturday=s GII San Diego H. But the 4-year-old, last seen winning the $20-million Saudi Cup

TDN EUROPE • PAGE 7 OF 16 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 26 JULY 2020

FIRST-SEASON SIRESWITH RUNNERS

Hannon continued, AShe has run good races at Ascot and

elsewhere. It=s all to do with if she=s in form on the day--if she is

then she=s very hard to beat and if not she runs moderately, but

we never know until a furlong and a half out. She=s a star--no

matter how she runs, she=s loved at home. To have a Classic

winner still in training at five is great for racing and we=re all

enjoying the ride.@

Also on the card is the G3 Princess Margaret Betfred S., in

which the increasingly-elusive TDN Rising Star More Beautiful

(War Front) needs better ground than she encountered when

ninth in the G2 Queen Mary S. at the Royal meeting June 20.

Third in that contest at 100-1, Caroline Dale (GB) (Lethal Force

{Ire}) has since won at Windsor July 6 and heads a two-pronged

attack from the David Loughnane stable alongside the July 10

G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. third Santosha (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}).

The form of that Newmarket contest was boosted by the

subsequent Listed Star S. success of the runner-up Fev Rover

(Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) and the trainer is relishing seeing them both

in action. AWe only have 10 or 11 two-year-old fillies in the yard,

so to have two of their calibre is fantastic,@ he said.

AI would prefer not to run them against each other, but you

have to train them as individuals and it=s the right race for them

both,@ Loughnane added. AI think they both have fantastic

chances and I=m very bullish about both. They are both different

fillies--Caroline wears her heart on her sleeve, bombs out of the

gate and is dynamite in front and if you are good enough to pass

her they=ll have to fight for it. Santosha likes to take her time

and saves a bit up her sleeve--she=s very tough. She was green

still at Newmarket and when she came with her run Dandalla

just drifted across her a bit. She=s come on a lot, while Caroline

just has so much ability. I think both are borderline on their way

to being group one horses.@

At York, the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Lyric Fillies= S. sees

Khalid Abdullah=s Franconia (GB) (Frankel {GB}) take on the

older horses following her impressive success in Newbury=s

Listed Abingdon Fillies= S. The form of that 10-furlong Oaks prep

has been boosted by the listed win of the runner-up Cabaletta

(GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and the highly-regarded half-sister

to the G1 Nassau S. heroine Winsili (GB) (Dansili {GB}) will be a

warm order to cap another stellar weekend for Juddmonte. John

Gosden said of the homebred, who was forced to miss the

G3 Musidora S. here earlier this month, AShe scoped with mucus

before the Musidora. She has always been a little bit inclined

that way and I just wasn=t happy with her. She is like her sister

Winsili and is very full of herself at home. She is quite a

character, but she seems in good form. It was a good effort to

break her maiden in a listed race, but she now has to carry a

penalty for that victory in this race. The race at Newbury is

working out quite well.@

Franconia encounters Mohamed Khalid Abdulrahim=s highly-

regarded Gold Wand (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}), who was out of

her depth and probably running over too far when a distant

seventh in the July 4 G1 Epsom Oaks. Jockey Andrea Atzeni is

confident she can bounce back. AI think a mile and a quarter on

a flat track like York will suit her perfectly, because she won over

that trip at Newbury,@ he explained. AShe is a filly that we like

quite like. We took a chance in the Oaks, because we thought

she would be competitive in that race. But it just never

happened for her, as she probably didn=t have enough

experience. She didn=t have a hard race in the Oaks and she

came out of it fine. We are very pleased with her.@

Tabdeed (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) took the G3 Hackwood S. and

he had something else to ponder a week on after Albasheer

(Ire) (Shamardal) earned TDN Rising Star status at Doncaster.

Starting the seven-furlong British Stallion Studs EBF Novice S. as

a 17-2 shot, the chestnut was under restraint from David

Probert from the break and suffered some barges as he tracked

the group racing towards the rear. Shaken up to chase the

fellow Shadwell representative Alablaq (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire})

approaching two out, the imposing homebred descendant of

Height of Fashion (Fr) brushed that rival aside with 1 1/2

Making a winning debut over this trip at Doncaster July 5,

Chindit took the next step up the ladder at the expense of some

well-regarded peers to maintain his perfect record here. Drawn

on the wing and racing at the back of the group racing up the

centre, the bay travelled strongly into contention approaching

the two-furlong marker and overhauled Cobh 150 yards out en

route to a clear-cut success. Trainer Richard Hannon is of a mind

to aim high now and said, AHe won well first time and generally

if ours win first time, they are very good. He worked very well

during the week and I thought he was very impressive. He

looked like he=ll get a mile no problem and won with authority.

Carrying a penalty for her seven-length success in The

Curragh=s G3 Loughbrown S. in September, Kastasa proved

professional to return a winner as bigger staying targets await

this season. Settled with three ahead initially by Oisin Orr,

victory looked unlikely as she was pushed along before the

home bend but stamina is her strong suit and once straightened

for home she was able to take command with 1 1/2 furlongs to

race. Tackled by Nan Yehi and pushed to the line, the homebred

gave the impression she was idling in front and her rider

believes there is plenty to come.

AThey didn=t go much of a gallop and she does stay a bit

further, so her class got her through,@ Orr commented. AShe

picked up well under pressure and found plenty, then had a

good blow when she got to the front.@

Trainer Dermot Weld added, AIt was her first run back. She had

a very busy and highly successful year last year and the plan had

always been to start her today. She=ll go for the [G3] Stanerra [at

Naas] in about three weeks= time. The race wasn=t really run to

suit her there, but class is class. She=ll improve from that run

too. Horses like her usually don=t win impressively or by big

distances, but they keep winning. The [G1] Irish Leger could be

quite possible for her, long-term.@

The dam, who also produced the listed-placed Kassaba (Ire)

heroine Kastoria (Ire) (Selkirk). Also runner-up in the G1 Hong

and seized inmmediate control of this debut. Untroubled on the

along approaching the quarter-mile marker and kept on strongly

under minimal coaxing in the closing stages to outgun Diadora

BELGARION SWOOPS LATE IN DURBAN JULY

In common with much of the racing world, Africa=s richest

race, the G1 Vodacom Durban July, took place behind closed

doors at Greyville, but had spectators been in the grandstand

they would have been afforded a close-up view of the winner.

Belgarion (SAF) (Dynasty {SAF}), who jumped from stall 17,

came widest of all in the 18-runner field to swoop late,

extending his winning sequence to five for Justin Snaith.

With the large field stretched across the width of the track, the

first three home were all late closers down the stands= side, with

3-year-old Got The Greenlight (SAF) (Gimmethegreenlight

{Aus}) holding on for second just a short-head in front of

Belgarion=s stable-mate and the winner of the race in the last

two seasons, Do It Again (SAF) (Twice Over {GB}). One of five

runners for Snaith, Belgarion, ridden by Richard Fourie, provided

his trainer with his fifth victory in the Durban July. The 4-year-

old has now won seven of his nine starts, including the

G2 Glorious Goodwood Peninsula H. back in January, for owner-

breeders Alec and Gillian Foster. Belgarion is the seventh foal

and one of seven winners for the dual German winner Riva (Ger)

(Acatenango {Ger}), a half-sister to G3 Prix des Flore winner

Oxava (Fr) (Antheus). Their dam in turn is a half-sister to

multiple group winner Goofalik (Lyphard).
