Gandhi Institute of ComputerEducation at BharatiyaVidyaBhavan, Bangalore, wasinaugurated on June 10, 2019,by Shri. Ghanshyam Agarwal,Managing Director, Francis Kleinand Company.

Rtn. Jagadeesh, President,Rotary Indiranagar, thanked thedonors Canfin Homes forproviding computers andShri.Ghanshyam Agarwal, forproviding for the interiors.He said that 32 work stationshad been provided and if needed,more could be added.

Canfin Homes Ltd., said hewas grateful to Bharatiya VidyaBhavan for having given CanfinHomes the opportunity toassociate with it and was happyto contribute to the computercentre. Further, he said that it isnot the job of the governmentalone to provide jobs, and thatwe should also strive towardsthat end. Canfin Homes, a housingfinance company sponsored byCanara Bank.

Rtn. Suresh Hari, DistrictGovernor, 3190, said that one oftheir focus areas was educationand literacy. He thankedBharatiya Vidya Bhavan forgiving the opportunity to RotaryInternational, and in particular,Rotary Indiranagar, forassociating with this programme.

Ghanshyam Agarwal,Managing Director, Francis Kleinand Company, mentioned that helearnt about Gandhi Institute’sprogrammes in computereducation when one of hissecretaries walked into hiscabin and showed the certificateobtained by her mother one yearback. He said, “So, I was verykeen and interested to knowmore about the Centre and dosomething for the good cause,”and added that he was happy tobe associated with the project.He also told the students thatonce they studied the course andwere successful in life, they shouldalso think of the economicallybackward and about giving backto society.

ABOUT THE COURSE

The institute was started in2013, and the courses areconducted for the economicallybackward in the age group of18-35, free of charge. They arethree-month courses with threeclasses every week, the durationof each class being two hours.The course syllabus is the same inall the 53 centres of BVB acrossthe country.

The course for senior citizenshas also been enthusiasticallyreceived with some of themattending the course even at theage of 85. Many were prompt,punctual and waited eagerly forthe classes.

Praveen Kumar S.,Educational Associate forBhavan, said that prior to therefurbishment, the capacity at thecentre was 320 students per year,as there were 80 students in abatch every three months. Now,with the refurbishment, thecapacity increases to 640 a year,starting from September 2019,thus reaching even more of theeconomically backward groups.“We have so far reached out to

1700 students from the time thecourse started in Bangalore inOctober 2013. The aim is toreach the maximum number of theeconomically backward andneedy sections of society. Thecentre was offering 80 seats sofar, but receiving 140 applications,thus indicating the demand for thecourses.”

Many students who attend thecourse have not seen a computerin their lives. The courses targetactual beneficiaries. They createcomputer awareness andcomputer literacy. The studentscan attend these courses and later,build on them on their own asthey grow in their careers. Thecourses thus offer a starting point.In all, there are 53 centres acrossIndia, all of them following thesame syllabus, and reaching out toaround 30,000 students a year.

An interesting fact is thatGandhi Institute of ComputerEducation is the brainchild of thelate Murli S. Deora, politicalleader, who was an alumnus ofBharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai.It was his idea to start freecomputer education for youthfrom economically weakersections of the society.

The Convocation of

Bharathiya Jyothisha Sansthan(BJS) in collaboration withBharatiyaVidya Bhavan (BVB)was held at BVB on 25th May,2019 in Bangalore.

Dr S. Krishna Kumar,President of BJS, welcomed thedignitaries at the event after theinvocation and lighting of thelamp ceremony.

Speaking at the event,Dr. Mallepuram Venkatesh, theChief Guest, mentioned thatapart from learning the subject ofastrology, students will alsoknow Vedanta with spirituality

which enhances quality. He alsooffered examples of clairvoyanceof Swamijis in many of theirpredictions, which is the basicrequirement for astrologers.

Certificates for havingcompleted the courses inAstrology were given to thestudents by Dr. MallepuramVenkatesh. Incidentally, theastrology course is very popularand has been well attended eversince it began more than 20 yearsago.

Party. Moghul Tamasha obviouslymeans a Tamasha or a satiricalplay on the Moghuls. Interestingly,the tradition of the play is confinedto a few villages surrounding thetown of Bhadrakin, Odisha,where there is a concentration ofthe Muslim population.Tamasha isnot a play of a single language. Itis multilingual. It has songs anddialogues in Persian, Urdu, Hindi,Oriya and Bengali.It was scriptedduring the early part of the 18thCentury when the Marathas ruledover Odisha. Kavi Bansi BallavaGoswami, born in 1729 AD,wrote a number of Tamas hassuch as Bhil Tamasha, Radha-Krishna Tamasha and MoghulTamasha.Moghul Tamasha hasno definite plot. Most of thecharacters are unrelated.

15/04/2019 - GeetaGovinda was presented byShri. Simanchal Das and Party.Bhakta Kavi Jaidev had written /composed his immortalcompilation of lyrical poems,“Geeta Govind,” in the last partof the 12th century AD. Radhaand Krishna’s immortal love life isdescribed in a magnificent way inall its 12 sargas (parts).Researchers are of the opinionthat it is a collection of lyricalpoems meant for dramatisation /dance performance. After readingit, it can be observed that it iswritten for drama. It is said thatJaidev’s wife Padmavati was adevadasi of Srimandir. In adream, Lord Jagannath directedher to marry Jaidev. It is found invarious religious books and stoneinscriptions that during the 12thcentury, Devadasi dance was


prevalent in various temples ofOdisha and that Geeta Govindawas sung / recited during thosetimes. Devadasi Nrutya wasintroduced in temples afterMaharaj Choda Ganga Devbuilt the Puri Jagannath Temple.

He employed devadasisand musicians from the south.The king had donated a villageto them for residential purposesand the sahi village is well knownas Chudanga Sahi at Puri.Incidentally, no Devadasi Nrutyais performed in Srimandir now,but the recital of Geeta Govindcontinues even today only tokeep the tradition alive.It is notconfined to Odisha alone. It iswell known as the first raga (tune)based lyrical collection of thegreat epic. Geeta Govind’smelodious tune is heard
