INCLUSION &DIVERSITY UPDATE2021/22

“Proudly helping families to eat well without costing the earth”

In August 2020 we introducedour Inclusion & Diversity(I&D) strategy to thebusiness. I am delighted tonow be able to share anupdate with you on thesignificant progress we havealready made.

One of the 6 pillars of the ‘Our Princes Our People’philosophy, is ‘Our Community’and we are committed tocreating strong links withinboth Princes as a communityand within communities wherewe live and work.

Integral to this is our approach to I&D and our focuson LGBT+, Accessibility, Social Mobility, GenderDiversity, Multicultural and Age Diversity.

As a business we have always taken ourresponsibilities in each of these areas seriously, buthaving a dedicated strategy allows us to make evengreater progress.

We recognise that the programme we have embarkedon is about long-term, sustainable culture change.

With an ambition to become an Employer ofChoice, we must take a stance on I&D. It has to bepart of the fabric of our business, a business inwhich all colleagues have a sense of belonging, feelthey are heard and are able to bring their best selvesto work every day.

We launched the I&D Strategy with InclusionChampions ready to lead the 6 pillars and then putout a call for volunteers to join the ColleagueResource Groups (CRGs) – and you didn’t disappoint. In fact, we were overwhelmed with the response andover 100 colleagues from across the Group joinedthe CRGs.

I would like to thank our CRGmembers and their InclusionChampions – their hard work, commitment and enthusiasm isall the more impressive whenyou remember that this isvoluntary and in addition to theirday jobs.

In the following pages, we hopeto give you a flavour of what hasbeen achieved so far and alsosignpost some exciting plans wehave over the next 12 months.

A highlight for me is the PrincesGroup Inclusion Week in

September – run for the first time in 2020 it willnow be an annual fixture in our company’s calendar, encouraging colleagues to reach out and talk to oneanother.

Alongside this update, for visibility and awarenesswe are publishing our first ever I&D calendarcontaining dates of Princes events and activities and also many other important dates.

Every colleague has a role and responsibility inmaking a positive difference and enabling us tobecome a true leader in the field of I&D.

You can contact the CRGs [email protected] – we would love toreceive your feedback, suggestions and photos!

It is a mistake to think that gender equality is something only relevant to women. I think achieving gender parity would not only make things fairer and better for women, animportant goal in its own right, but would also improve things for men as well. When I sawthat Princes was looking to address gender inequality within the business, I was keen to helpin any way I could. I’m excited to help the group create some positive change at Princes.

JAMES ARKINSTALL, SENIOR RESEARCH MANAGER, LIVERPOOL

“ “My name is Ruth Simpson and I haveworked at Princes for just over 15 years.I’ve held a variety of roles during thistime, starting in marketing and thenestablishing our corporate relationsfunction. I now operate in generalmanagement leading the Foods BusinessSector & Group Marketing.

I feel really proud to head up the GenderDiversity pillar because I feel strongly thatgender should not prohibit opportunity.

I recall when I became a Director in 2009 I was the only female in the director group. One of my first experiences as a Directorwas attending a senior level meeting with allof the other directors and realising my name

plate read “Mr” Simpson. I remember leavingthat meeting thinking it would benefit fromhaving a more gender diverse participation.

I am pleased to say that my experience hasimproved from this point and I have nodoubt that the best performing teams andcompanies are ones which are truly genderbalanced.

We have an active CRG which has madegood progress including two importantmilestones. In 2020, thanks to the work ofthe CRG and the support of the Board, webecame a signatory to the UN’s Women’sEmpowerment Principles.

Then in 2021 we celebrated InternationalWomen’s Day and encouraged all of ourcolleagues to actively #choosetochallenge. It was important to us that far from justreferencing the date in the calendar, weasked colleagues to wear purple, change MSTeams backgrounds and share their women of inspiration.

These milestones demonstrate our drive tobecome increasingly gender aware anddiverse.

I’d like to thank every member of theGender Diversity CRG for their passion and drive.

I joined as my sister is a lesbian and she has spoken to me about how she has beentreated differently because of this. We have talked about the struggles she has to face everyday and I hate to think of this happening to others. I want to see what difference we canmake and ensure that everyone at Princes feels included.

I am Remmelt Jongkind and have workedat Princes for just over 25 years. Duringthis time, I have enjoyed working indifferent parts of the Group in variousroles. Since 2012 I have represented ourEuropean business working from ouroffice in The Netherlands.

I am very aware that in too many placesLGBT+ people still face challenges in theirwork and private lives and was keen toremove any biases (even if unconscious) toensure that Princes is a safe and comfortablework-place for everyone.

The CRG has concentrated on establishing aframework to support this goal.

We have two working parties which aregenerating great ideas to educate, informand support our colleagues. A lot of theideas stem from the personal experiences ofcolleagues in their personal and professionallives.

It is important to us that we demonstratejust how seriously we are taking LGBT+ andhope that by joining Stonewall we havereassured colleagues that we intend to makea real difference and are more than preparedto listen, learn and change.

Finally, thanks to the hard work andenthusiasm of the CRG members, Princeswill be celebrating three key dates in ourInclusion & Diversity calendar – PrideMonth, June 2022, National Coming OutDay, October 11 2021 and LGBT+ HistoryMonth, February 2022.

Being part of the Age Diversity CRG, as part of the Inclusion & Diversity initiative, isimportant to me. I have met so many people from a range of ages, backgrounds andcultures, all with unique stories of how they came to work for the Group. The I&D initiativehas really helped us to all connect and build plans to help us become an inclusive businessand an employer of choice. Princes has invested so much in me as a young leader and thisinitiative gives me the opportunity to give back.

My name is Nick Spruyt and I haveworked at Princes for over 31 years. Before that I used to sell products toPrinces.

During my career I have been lucky enoughto work in nearly every area of the businessin commercial, operational and generalmanagement roles and, for the last threeyears, heading up our Food and ItalianProducts business sectors as well as havingresponsibility for Group Marketing andEurope.

I feel really proud to lead the Age Diversitypillar. Within our CRG we have a wide,

diverse pool of talent which spans all agegroups and this means that we can spotpotential barriers and opportunities throughthose different lenses.

Ageism has no place in a forward-lookingbusiness and I am lucky to be working withlike-minded colleagues to ensure that wemaximise the benefits of a diverse age mixright across our Group.

Since we launched the Age Diversity CRGlast September I have been really pleasedwith the progress made by our team and theenergy and passion that has gone intocreating and developing our 4 activeworkstreams: Retirement Planning;Mentoring Systems; working with Schools,Colleges & Universities; and data analysis ofage demographics across the Group.

As you can see, we are working at both endsof the age spectrum and using demographicdata to inform our activity.

In 2021 we will be engaging all Groupcolleagues to help us celebrate Age DiversityDay on 11 June and International Youth Dayon 12 August – more on this to follow!

My conviction is that real and effective multiculturalism is the most important factorfor the success of an organisation of people that intends to play a leading role in makingthe world better. It will make me proud to say that I have contributed to making Princes anaturally multicultural place.

KAMAL DEQUIUEC, HEAD OF OPERATIONS, FOGGIA

“ “My name is Kazuhito Suematsu and Ihave worked at Princes for 4 years.

I feel really proud to head up theMulticultural pillar, something that is drivenby my own life and business experiences.

A multicultural business is a great thing.

While more time and resource are needed to create a truly inclusive and diverseenvironment, the end result can be so muchmore powerful.

Sometimes in a monocultural environment, there is a sense that there is less of a needto communicate whereas in a multiculturalorganisation like Princes’ the investment incommunication has to be so much greaterbecause there are so many more angles toconsider.

Before I joined Princes in 2016, I worked in 5 different industries and countries, namelyJapan, Canada, France, US and here in theUK. I also spent part of my childhood in theUS and attended University in the UK.

My background means that I have alwaysfelt like a minority, even when I was in Japan, because I have moved around so much andexperienced so many different cultures.

Our initial activity for 2021/22 is all aboutraising awareness of our diversity. From thiscomes increased respect and understandingwhich will lead to closer collaboration andincreased performance.

I’d like to personally thank all of the CRGmembers for their enthusiastic support.

KAZUHITO SUEMATSUChief Corporate Officer

MULTICULTURALOUR INCLUSION CHAMPION

A focus on celebrating our multicultural workforce by recognising and respecting the valuable contribution individuals from diversebackgrounds and experiences bring to Princes, our customers and the consumers who value our products. We will also createopportunities to share and understand our cultural differences.

MISSION & OBJECTIVE

1. It is fitting that we will use the UN’s Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development in May to launch our multicultural activity – using key holidays (and the food we eat) to mark them, sharing recipes and starting conversations with colleagues across the Group.

2. We will consider developing a training programme to promote multicultural awareness by using the Group’s new training platform Pathways.

3. We will use analytical data to help identify ethnic diversity gaps across our sites and then work with the business to address and make improvements.

It is a great and enriched experience to be part of the Accessibility CRG as it is anopportunity to be able to bring value to the wellbeing of colleagues who experiencephysical and/or mental difficulties. Our actions will ensure long term support for ourcolleagues.

ASTRID DERBY, RECEPTIONIST, MAURITIUS

“ “My name is Stephen Cardall and I haveworked at Princes for 23 years. Afterqualifying as a Chartered Accountant, I joined the company as a ProjectAccountant and progressed through avariety of finance roles across the Group.I became Finance Director in 2008 and am now Chief Finance Officer.

I feel really proud to champion theAccessibility pillar because it is important to me that neither physical nor mentaldisabilities become barriers to ourcolleagues’ success in Princes. I want tounderstand how we can continuouslyimprove and challenge ourselves to ensurethat colleagues feel increasingly able to talkabout their disability without fear of anyimpact on them in the workplace or theirfuture career.

Accessibility is sometimes seen as somethingthat has to be physical, but one of the mainpurposes of the CRG’s work is to ensure equalrecognition for the physical and mentalchallenges that our colleagues can face.

This is personal to me. Multiple Sclerosis hasaffected my family and I have experiencedthe impact this can have on physicaldisability and mental health, so I dounderstand some of the challenges. I havealso been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosismyself more recently which is a reminderthat not all health and wellbeing issues arevisible to everyone.

With a collective passion to raise awarenessand break down any barriers, the AccessibilityCRG meetings have been really effective. After taking time to get to know each other,we have defined our mission and we are nowplanning awareness initiatives for our twokey events - World Mental Health Day andInternational Day of Disabled Persons.

While as a business we have long hadpractical support measures in place, seeingthem in action during the Covid-19 crisis –at a time when colleagues have neededsupport - was a timely reminder of theirimportance and the difference they make.

Many businesses unintentionally create barriers that prevent excellent people gettingahead. Some barriers are subtle and other barriers more obvious. I’m delighted to be part ofa group working to ensure that a person’s background doesn’t determine their future.

PAUL WILLIAMS, HEAD OF ETHICAL TRADING & HUMAN RIGHTS

My name is Barry McDonnell and I haveworked at Princes for 14 months. I haveforged a career in manufacturingoperations where I started in heavyindustrial engineering. I then moved intoFMCG and the currency printing sectorbefore having the privilege to join PrincesGroup where I am Chief OperationsOfficer.

I am also an engineer and hold a Master’sdegree in manufacturing management andtechnology.

But my background meant that it was nevera given that I would achieve even a fractionof what I have in my career.

I come from very humble beginnings, one ofseven kids. My father, a foundry worker, died

when I was very young, and my mother wasa cleaner at my secondary school. I leftschool at 15.

I learned the value of hard work at an earlyage and the importance of working on yourpersonal development and education tobecome the very best version of yourself. That is all about your personal attitude andbehaviours.

Social Mobility is something that I personallyconnect with and fully support and I amreally pleased we are acting on this.

I feel truly privileged to have the chance tobe part of this going forward and to reallygive something back to the amazing peoplein our business.

The Social Mobility CRG is making goodprogress. We have developed several strongideas and have put together teams to takeforward our areas of key focus which includestronger student engagement, runningworkshops and careers events and workingwith HR to ensure our people managersappreciate the value of Social Mobility. It is ahuge subject area so we wanted to ensurewe are prioritising the right issues.

I, more than anyone, understand that it isnot where you start in life, but where youfinish that counts. I am proud to call myselfthe Inclusion Champion for Social Mobility.

I detest any form of discriminationand just wanted to get involved with theaim of helping in some way to make adifference. LGBT issues are close to myheart. I have great colleagues in my teamand many friends that are gay and lesbian. I have seen some of the challenges theyhave faced and just think that this is wrong. I couldn’t think of a better group to join andreally try to make a difference.
